MacGyver Reboot Update #70

Cast and Crew are battling harsh conditions this week while filming outside. For tonight’s Episode 3×08, they got to dress up for a Gala Dinner that’s taking place in a warm and comfy ball room, at least.

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×06 and 3×07
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in September; e.g. David Dastmalchian for Episode 3×06 (with Lucas Till), Sibongile Mlambo for 3×06 (with David Dastmalchian) or Jimmy Akingbola for 3×07 (with Justin Hires, with Tristin Mays and with Joy Sunday).

Since Episode 3×03, CBS hadn’t released any Sneak Peeks. Fans felt cheated on, especially because Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods got several Sneak Peeks for every episode. So it was a nice surprise when for Episode 3×07, they released 3 Sneak Peeks on November 8.

BtS photo of Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (via David Dastmalchian)

Technical Advisor Rhett Allain added blog posts about the MacHacks again – e.g. about the use of muriatic acid to eat through cement in Episode 3×06 or about the Microwave Gun in 3×07. He was also interviewed for a CBS news channel segment. (Funny note: He’s never met the cast or the crew. CBS should invite this man to visit the set soon!)

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To recap:  With the World Series being on at the same time, the demo-rating for Episode 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family) dropped to a 0.6. It still managed a live-viewers audience of 5.894 millions. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.66 million viewers (+28%), reaching a total of 7.553 million viewers and a demo of 1.01 (+58%) when including the DVR numbers.

Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Episode 3×06 (Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc) made 6.063 milllion live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.8 in the important demo-group of 18-49-year-olds. This episode has the second-highest audience number and the highest (un-rounded) demo of Season 3 so far. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.41 million viewers (+23%), reaching a total of 7.475 million viewers and a demo of 1.09 (+40%) when including DVR.

Episode 3×07 (Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly) reached 6.429 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. It had the same demo-rating as Hawaii Five-0, but more interestingly, it beat Last Man Standing in audience numbers, winning the 8pm time-slot. So far, this episode has the highest audience number this season.

About the Season 3 Ratings
At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.008 millions live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.71.

For comparison with other CBS crime shows in the same range: Peter Lenkov’s rookie show Magnum PI is at 6.001 millions / 0.88 demo (Monday) after airing 7 episodes so far, despite getting a lot more promo than other CBS shows. It just got an extra premiere-slot on Sunday, January 20 – directly after the AFC Championship Game. This could work in their favor; affecting the episode averages for the season. SEAL Team is on average at 5.34 million live-viewers / 0.83 in demo (Wednesday, 7 episodes) and SWAT at 5.22 / 0.71 (Thursday, 7 episodes).

When comparing to all CBS scripted shows this Fall TV Season, the Reboot is at rank 19 (of 20) in demo and at rank 14 (of 20) in audience. While that doesn’t read so great, all prediction sites have the show predicted as “likely to be renewed” or “sure to be renewed”. Its famous brand name with franchise and syndication potential sure makes it a likely candidate to get another season.

Episode 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

What you need to know about Episode 3×08
The episode airing tonight is titled “Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome”, written by Brian Durkin and directed by Lily Mariye. In case you missed the Synopsis:

MacGyver and the team set off on a dangerous capture operation after an Irish military intelligence officer approaches them claiming to know the whereabouts of “The Ghost,” a lethal bomb maker whom Mac has been hunting for years.

The episode has guest appearances by Holland Roden, Emerson Brooks (as Charlie Robinson) and Sean C. Michael (as the Ghost). It looks like George Eads might be absent in this episode since I haven’t seen him in any of the BtS or promo material.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

On November 8, they released 13 Official Stills. Most pf them show Team Phoenix (sans Jack and Leanna) at a Gala Dinner, all dolled up and/or in sharp suits. They also released 2 Sneak Peeks yesterday. The first one has Mac and Riley talking about Nasha before Mac meets Holland Rodan’s character Eileen at a veteran gala. The second one has Mac, Riley, Bozer plus Charlie and Eileen out in the field with Matty assisting in the War Room back at Phoenix.

Emerson Brooks uploaded a BtS photo showing Charlie on a stretcher; confirming that the episode will take place in Paris. Executive Producer and Showrunner Peter Lenkov remains quiet. In fact, besides a re-post of Lucas Till, he still hasn’t posted anything MacGyver-related on Instagram since October 5.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×09 to 3×12
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (November 30)
Directed by Michael Martinez. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton) and return of Reign Edwards (as Leanna). Check out the Press Release and the Official Stills here.
  • 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (December 7)
Partially filmed in a prison location. Otherwise still top secret, apparently.
  • 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (tbd)
Directed by Carlos Bernard. Guest appearances by Shani Atias, Doug Savant and Seamus Patrick Dever.
  • 3×12: tba (tbd)
    Guest appearance by Bridget Regan.

There’s no episode on November 23, but we’ll get a rerun on December 28. Episode 3×11 – which was originally planned as the Christmas Episode being the Midseason-Finale – will presumably air in January.

BtS photo of Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Carlos Bernard)

Working on Episodes 3×11 and 3×12
Again, there weren’t many BtS photos being uploaded in recent weeks. Cast and Crew still mainly rely on temporary videos now without revealing too much, which makes it incredibly difficult to even guess what the storyline could be about. Luckily, every now and then, someone feels like teasing the fans a bit. They filmed a car crash and another ballroom gala scene. Shani Atias had uploaded quite a few BtS photos and Insta Stories. Director Carlos Bernard uploaded a nice team photo while taking a break after filming in the War Room.

On November 6, production started on Episode 2×12. They filmed some car scenes with Tristin driving, in a hangar (and possibly inside an airplane) and several days in a building dressed to be located in Russia – while also working on a set that looks like Fort Knox. This week, the constant and cold rain led do some re-scheduling so they could film inside instead. They also had some kid actors on set during the last few days: Izabella Dzmitryieu and Samuel Moody posted some nice photos with the cast.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Izabella Dzmitryieu)

The weather didn’t change for the better though – so yesterday, they had to film in the woods; despite freezing temperatures, wind and rain. Even the cameras got to wear a raincoat. Today, they were lucky with blue skies and the sun peeking through the foliage every now and then.

It’s possible they’re already working on Episode 3×13. My count might be a day or two off – but according to my files, they reached Day 100 of filming for Season 3.

Today, ET Canada finally released their video-interview with Lucas (probably done back in September of Season 3). He talks about doing stunts and what’s in store for his character this season (sadly, it’s not really a surprise anymore since we’re already seven episodes in).

BtS photo of Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Justin Hires)

Erik Kerr uploaded several videos of different episodes, e.g. of filming the attack on the truck with Riley driving (in Episode 3×04) or the fighting scene between Amber and Murdoc in Episode 3×06. (Funny note: The Stunt Double for Sarah Sokolovic was Kandis Hargrave, wife of Stunt Coordinator Daniel Hargrave. Between takes, she was nursing their son.)

Cast, Crew and Character News
Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Greg Corbett, Faran Tahir, David Chin and Alex Livinalli. Additionally, they had Casting Calls for Photo Doubles, a Hand Double for Meredith Eaton and for a Stand-In with red hair.

Episode 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for African American Techs and Agents, for Bad Guys, for Russian Guards and Russian Security, Tactical Men, Gala Guests, Russian Police, Russian Valets, Upscale Cars, Police, Male Fit Models, for Pedestrians with Cars, a Featured Pilot and Tactical Teams.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it: Season 1 of Original MacGyver was released on BluRay on October 30. Might be a nice Christmas gift *wink*. There’s no information yet about a possible release date for Season 2.

It’s not any prestigious contest, but the Reboot is eligible for the “Best of TV Awards” held by Canada Graphs. At the moment, you can vote for MacGyver in the category “Best TV Show” and for the characters in the category “Favorite TV Character” plus for the category “Best Non-Human Character or Prop” (I’ll say the robot or the SAK are the most likely candidates here).

Episode 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

For now, you can vote as many times as you want. The show is not available to choose from the list, but you can add it into the “other” box. So add your favorites in there and vote as many times as you want as long as the categories stay open. If it’s like last year, there will be several rounds with new categories added over time.

MacGyver Reboot Update #69

Murdoc is back in tonight’s Episode 3×06. We also got a glimpse at Episode 3×07 and apparently, there were MacGyver cookies on set!

BtS photo of Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Carlos Bernard)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×04 and 3×05
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in August; e.g. Tiffany Denise Hobbs (for 3×04) or Adela Tirado and Tucker Meek (both for 3×05). Matthew Albright posted a few BtS photos of the stunt scene on the truck of Episode 3×04.

BtS photo of Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (via Matthew Albright)

For both episodes, CBS didn’t release any Sneak Peeks. Fans felt cheated on, especially because Hawaii Five-0 got 4 Sneak Peeks for Episode 9×04 two weeks ago and 3 in total for 9×05 last week while Blue Bloods got 3 clips for each episode. Also, they took their sweet time to upload the clips from Episode 3×05 onto YouTube. Usually, they’re up just after the episode aired. This time, we had to wait until Tuesday.

To recap:  Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) had garned an audience of 6.155 milllion live-viewers and a demo of 0.8. In the +7 Days ratings, it added another 1.537 million viewers (+25%), reaching a total of 7.696 million viewers when including DVR.

Episode 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Episode 3×04 (Guts + Fuel + Hope) reached 6.008 million live-viewers and a demo 0.7 in the demo-group of 18-49-year-olds, so losing a bit in both audience and demo when compared to Episode 3×03. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.571 million viewers (+26%), reaching a total of 7.583 million viewers and a demo of 1.07 (+55%) when including DVR.

Episode 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family) had tough competition; the World Series being on at the same time. While the demo-rating dropped to a 0.6, it still managed a live-viewers audience of 5.894 millions. In the +3 Days ratings, it added 1.26 million viewers (+21%), reaching a total of 7.157 million viewers and a demo of 0.94 (+47%) when including the DVR numbers available so far.

Episode 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (via Adela Tirado)

While the demo ratings aren’t as good as CBS likes them, the Reboot still holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas; especially in audience numbers. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 6.21 millions / 0.92 demo (Monday) after airing six episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.32 / 0.82 (Wednesday, 5 episodes) and SWAT at 5.23 / 0.72 (Thursday, 5 episodes).

What you need to know about Episode 3×06
The episode airing tonight is titled “Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc”, directed by Stephen Herek.

Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

In case you missed the Synopsis:

Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) abducts MacGyver’s girlfriend, Nasha (Sibongile Mlambo), to force Mac to help him rescue his son, Cassian (Brady Bond), from a kidnapper. Also, a dangerous individual from Murdoc’s personal life shows up, giving Mac a glimpse into the villain’s past

They released 13 Official Stills in total – all of them featuring MacGyver, Murdoc, Cassian and Sarah Sokolovic as Amber. Yesterday, David Dastmalchian tweeted a funny GIF of Murdoc pushing MacGyver on an office chair.

Again, no special promo by CBS as I’m typing up this blog post – contrary to Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 that both got Sneak Peeks yesterday; H50 another exclusive clip via TV Line today. So far, Executive Producer and Showrunner Peter Lenkov stayed quiet as well. In fact, besides a re-post of Lucas Till, he hasn’t posted anything MacGyver-related on Instagram since October 5.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×07 to 3×11
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×07: Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly (November 9)
Guest appearances by Joy Sunday and Ric Reitz. Check out the Official Stills and the Press Release here.
  • 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (November 16)
Directed by Lily Mariye. Guest appearances by Holland Roden, Emerson Brooks (as Charlie Robinson) and Sean C. Michael (as the Ghost). Check out the Press Release here.
  • 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (November 30)
Directed by Michael Martinez. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton).
  • 3×10: tba (December 7)
Partially filmed in a prison location. Otherwise top secret, apparently.
  • 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (tbd)
Directed by Carlos Bernard. Guest appearances by Shani Atias and Doug Savant.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

As predicted, there’s no episode on November 23 due to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. They will air Holiday Specials at 8pm, followed by an episode of Magnum and a rerun of Hawaii Five-0. Initially, they have planned to air MacGyver reruns (we don’t know yet which episodes) on December 21 and 28. At the moment, the rerun on December 21 has been scrapped, along with the episode premiere on December 14. This means that Episode 3×11 – which was planned as the Christmas Episode being the Mid-season-Finale – will probably air AFTER Christmas (unless they can swap two episodes).

The episode title (Mac + Fallout + Jack) – revealed by Justin Hires – sure sounds ominous. I smell a cliffhanger-y plot twist. Fans might not mind that they don’t have to wait after a cliffhanger, but it will be a bit unusual to see a Christmas Episode in January. (It’s worth noting that the premiere for H50 has been scrapped as well while they got to keep the rerun on December 21.)

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Working on Episodes 3×10 and 3×11
Again, there were almost no BtS photos being uploaded in recent weeks. Cast and Crew rely mainly on temporary videos now – but every now and then, someone feels like teasing the fans a bit.

In recent weeks, they filmed an upscale event at a mansion and put Lucas Till in a Hazmat Suit. They also filmed in and around a pretty creepy prison set and decorated several streets to look like Christmas time; presumably for filming the Midseason Finale Episode.

As Meredith Eaton revealed, Matty is taking out the big guns now. It’s not clear yet if she just wanted a photo of a prop gun or if Matty will be part of a storyline involving handling deadly weapons. She looks a lot more friendly on the photo with Tristin Mays. Bozer will be wearing a tux again in an upcoming episode and seems to have taken part in a “planking competition“.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

On October 26, Lucas Till uploaded a short story that has him looking as if MacGyver did get into a fist fight again. According to Steven Serna, they had filmed a car crash scene that day, so maybe Mac had been involved in that – it would fit the Instagram Story that Lucas had uploaded on Halloween; showing him with bruises while sitting in the car. There are (fake) glass splinters on his clothes and in the reflection, it looks like the side-window is smashed.

The 2nd unit had to work on Saturday last week, while it seemed like the main cast had the day off.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via David Dastmalchian)

On October 30, the crew did the “dress like a co-worker” day again before fully embracing Halloween and showing up again in costume on the next day. They filmed some sort of ballroom gala scene where Meredith Eaton got to dress up while Reign Edwards, Tristin Mays and Justin Hires were delegated to staff; serving food and drinks.

Tristin and Reign later donned little black dresses while Justin looked like he was playing a designer. We can assume this will be another undercover mission. Interestingly, there were no sightings of Lucas Till or George Eads in the last 2 days.

While having a grueling schedule, they also get nice surprises every now and then. As Lucas Till revealed, one of the owners of a house location invited Cast and Crew to taste MacGyver cookies.

Cast, Crew and Character News
A photo by Carlos Bernard, director of Episode 3×11, revealed Doug Savant and Seamus Patrick Dever as guest-stars. Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Jimmy Gonzalez, for Shani Atias and for Sarah Al-Sherri.

Additionally, they had Casting Calls for Photo Doubles and for Small European Cars. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for a Hispanic Priest, for Inmates, for male actors for a Make-Up-Test, a female Nurse, a male Tech, for Market and Café Patrons, a Ghana Guard, an Asian Guard, for more guards, a Middle Eastern male actor for a Photo Shoot, a man with lots of tattoos and for women for a Beatiful Entourage.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • Tristin Mays is on the cover of the Fall Issue for NYSFE Magazine. There’s an interview and a photospread inside. You can order either the printed version or a digital copy on their website.
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver was released on BluRay this Tuesday.
  • Season 3 of the Reboot is being dubbed into French at the moment. As Gil Darnell revealed in an Instagram Story on Wednesday, he dubbed his own character in Episode 3×01.

MacGyver Reboot Update #68

Episode 3×04 premieres today and we also already got a glimpse at Episodes 3×05, 3×06 and 3×07! Sadly, still no Sneak Peeks for tonight’s episode.

Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×02 and 3×03
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in July and August; e.g. Jesse C. Boyd with Team Delta, Jessejames Locorriere with Team Phoenix at College or Tessa Blake (director of Episode 3×03) with Meredith Eaton and with George Eads.

BtS photo of Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (via Jessejames Locorriere)

For Episode 3×03, CBS added more Stills on October 9; making it 14 Stills in total. Interestingly, they were all photos of the Team Phoenix College Kids, so no Jack or Matty at all. Maybe they wanted to make up for the delay on the Sneak Peeks for Episode 3×02, so they added more Stills and uploaded the 3 Sneak Peeks earlier than usual.

To recap: Episode 3×01 had attracted an audience of 5.771 million live-viewers with a 0.7 rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. Compared to the Season 2 Premiere, they lost 0.1 in demo and about 920’000 viewers, which is less than most of the other CBS action drama shows. In the Live +7 days ratings, it gained another 1.8 million viewers, making it 7.60 million viewers in total when including DVR ratings.

Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

The Ratings for Episode 3×02 (Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship) were almost the same with 5.734 million viewers and a demo of 0.7. Thankfully, Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) did a bit better, reaching 6.155 milllion live-viewers and the same demo (0.8) as Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods.

While the ratings aren’t as good as for H50 or BB, the Reboot still holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 6.48 millions / 0.98 demo (Monday) after airing four episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.29 / 0.83 (Wednesday, 3 episodes) and SWAT at 5.18 / 0.73 (Thursday, 4 episodes).

BtS photo of Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (via Tessa Blake)

What you need to know about Episode 3×04
The episode airing tonight is titled “Guts + Fuel + Hope”. It’s the first episode written by Rob Pearlstein (who had previously worked on Scorpion) and was directed by Peter Weller. In case you missed the Synopsis:

MacGyver and Riley, with the help of Vasil (C. Thomas Howell), a distraught father, must find a way to drive a tanker filled with liquid oxygen through a region occupied by rebels and deliver it to a children’s hospital before they run out. Also, Riley helps MacGyver decide whether or not to allow his father back into his life.

For this episode, Tate Donovan as Oversight is listed in the recurring cast. They added additional Stills on October 9, but even though they uploaded several Sneak Peeks for both Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods yesterday, there are still no Sneak Peeks for MacGyver as I’m finishing up this blog post.

Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

At least Tristin Mays was nice enough to upload a little BtS video of her doing an action scene; driving the truck and fending off bad guys at the same time.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov has been quiet regarding MacGyver as well (in fact, his last Instagram post related to the MacGyver Reboot is from October 5, so 2 weeks ago while there was no shortage of postings for Magnum and H50).

Maybe there are mixed feelings regarding this episode since there’s still an ongoing investigation of the accident with Stunt Coordinator Justin Sundquist, but since they’ve decided to finish and air the episode, it should also get proper promotion.

Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×05 to 3×09
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (October 26)
Halloween Episode, directed by Eagle Egilsson. Guest appearances by Tate Donovan (as Oversight) and Sibongile Mlambo (Nasha). They added Official Stills on Tuesday. You can check them out here.
  • 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (November 2)
Directed by Stephen Herek. Guest appearances by Sibongile Mlambo (Nasha), David Dastmalchian (Murdoc) and Brady Bond (Cassian). See the Press Release here.
  • 3×07: Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly (November 9)
    Guest appearance by Joy Sunday.
  • 3×08: tba (November 16)
Guest appearances by Holland Roden and Emerson Brooks (Charlie Robinson).
  • 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (tbd)
Directed by Michael Martinez. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton).

It looks like the fans get at least 8 weeks of uninterrupted fun. There might be no episode on November 23rd, though (due to Thanksgiving).

BtS photo of Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (via Kikey Castillo)

Working on Episodes 3×09 and 3×10
On October 4, production had started on Episode 3×09. It’s titled “Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak”, written by Lindsey Allen and directed by Michael Martinez. Lance Gross was back on set as Billy Colton; uploading a few BtS videos as Short Stories on Instagram.

There’s almost no BtS photos being uploaded now; but mainly temporary videos. They filmed an upscale event at a mansion and put Lucas Till in a Hazmat Suit. Though not listed in the credits so far, Lucas’ brother Nick was on set as well. They also filmed several days inside the War Room Set or outside. Last night, they filmed stunt scenes on a prison set and there should be another overnight shoot today. They’ve also decorated some streets to look like it’s already Christmas time.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Meanwhile, Justin Hires keeps on giving us BtS photos from already filmed episodes; e.g. of 3×08 with Holland Roden and of the Team in their Sunday Attire.

Peter Lenkov promised to post more photos of George Eads, but so far he hasn’t delivered. Since George had deleted his Instagram account recently and hasn’t been seen on set very often in the last few weeks, fans still keep asking about him. Justin Hires was nice enough to make sure to include him in his recent Snapchat videos.

Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards wrapped the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand. Just a few days after arriving back in LA, she was on set again to film scenes for Episode 3×09.

Episode 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Amaris Merlin and for Sendhil Ramamurthy. Additionally, they had several Calls for Photo Doubles and for Small European Cars. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for Lab Techs, Scientists, Guards, European Police, Hazmat Men, a Phoenix Driver, for people attending an Upscale Event, Airport Security, or for Prison Inmates and for Prison Guards.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • Tomorrow (8pm), there will be a rerun of the Michael Jackson Halloween Special on CBS with the voices of Lucas Till and George Eads.
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver is still set to be released on BluRay on October 30. CBS even started doing promo for it, although we still have no information if there will be Extras or not.

While Cast and Crew work 15-hours-days and more, they still find some time for other projects. Tristin Mays did a photoshoot last month. She will be on the cover of the Fall Issue for NYSFE Magazine, released on October 27. According to online posts, there should also be an interview where she talks about the MacGyver Reboot. You can pre-order the magazine here.

MacGyver in Germany
On average, every Season 2 episode had about 1.73 milllion live-viewers and a demo-rating of 8.62. This is less than Season 1 (1.79 million live-viewers, demo 10.0), but enough to make the network happy. Also, they still air reruns of Season 1 on Monday night.

MacGyver Reboot Update #67

Episode 3×02 premieres today! While Cast and Crew work on Episode 3×09, the famous social media game “Where’s George?” is going into another round.

Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About the Season 3 Premiere
CBS took its sweet time to start promoting Season 3. A day before Premiere Day, they finally released 3 Sneak Peek videos. On Friday, ET Online added another, Exclusive Sneak Peek of Mac and Oversight parachuting through crossfire. A few hours later, CBS released an additional Sneak Peek as well, making it 5 Sneak Peeks in total.

Some of the stunt and guest actors started posting “old” photos and videos from the filming process done back in July; e.g. Richie Stephens or Matthew Albright. Sibongile Mlambo uploaded a photo of her character’s different costumes.

BtS photo of Episode 3×01: Improvise (via Carl A Nespoli)

According to aerial stunt coordinator Carl Anthony Nespoli on Facebook, the parachuting scenes have been done for real. Yan Dron and Troy Hartman did the main jumps; also lighting the canopy on fire. I hope we see more of this as a Season 3 Featurette soon.

Sadly, the ratings weren’t as high as I hoped. Episode 3×01 attracted 5.77 million viewers and got a 0.7 rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. It’s the episode with the lowest audience numbers so far, but it got a better demo than the Season 2 Finale. (For comparison: Episode 2×01 premiered with 6.69 / 0.8 and Episode 2×23 ended the Season with 6.10 / 0.6.)

Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

It also holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas that got a lot more promo in recent weeks and have a lot more ad-value simply due being a non-Friday-show. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 7.08 millions / 1.05 demo (Monday) after airing two episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.02 / 0.8 (Wednesday, 1 episode) and SWAT at 4.95 / 0.75 (Thursday, 2 episodes).

What you need to know about Episode 3×02
The episode airing tonight is titled “Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship”; written by Brian Durkin and directed by Duane Clark. In case you missed the Synopsis:

When Jack receives an emergency distress signal from one of his old Delta buddies who is falsely accused of terrorism in a foreign country, MacGyver and Jack quickly recruit the rest of Jack’s old Delta team and stage an unsanctioned rescue op.

For this episode, Reign Edwards as Leanna is listed in the recurring cast. To be honest, I don’t know anyone of the guest cast.

On September 27, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov had uploaded a short video; stating that one of his favorite artists will provide a song in the Episode. (The scene is MacGyver and Jack talking with Mac apologizing while fetching a few beers in MacGyver’s kitchen; later being joined by Matty.) As Kristin Diable revealed, the song hasn’t been released so far, marking this episodes as its world premiere.

CBS had uploaded some Sneak Peeks onto their YouTube account. Sadly, they put up the Sneak Peeks for last week’s episode 3×01 again. They have released 4 Sneak Peeks in total, but as I’m typing this post, they still haven’t corrected their error 16 hours later. Bit of a pity that of all the CBS shows it seems to be MacGyver that gets either a wonky form of promo or no promo at all.

Episode 3×02: Bozer+ Booze + Back to School (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×03 to 3×07
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (October 12)
Directed by Tessa Blake; following the storyline of Team Phoenix going undercover on a college campus. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (as Billy Colton).
  • 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (October 19)
Directed by Peter Weller, this episode has Riley and Mac driving a tanker filled with liquid oxygen through a war-torn region to deliver it to a children’s hospital. For the first Official Still released on Monday, you can check the Press Release here.
  • 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (October 26)
Halloween Episode, directed by Eagle Egilsson.
  • 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (November 2)
Directed by Stephen Herek. Guest appearances by David Dastmalchian (Murdoc) and Brady Bond (Cassian).
  • 3×07: tba (November 9)
  • 3×08: tba (November 16)

It looks like the fans get at least 8 weeks of uninterrupted fun. There might be no episode on November 23rd, though (due to Thanksgiving).

Working on Episodes 3×08 and 3×09
On September 24, production started on Episode 3×08, directed by Lily Mariye (Emergency Room). They filmed in “Paris” and in “Afghanistan”, joined by Emerson Brooks (as Mac’s EOD friend Charlie Robinson) and Holland Roden (known for her work in the TV-Show Teen Wolf).

The cast posted a ton of Instagram Live Stories; making up for lost time and promoting the Season 3 Premiere. On Friday, they’ve filmed scenes for a Foundation Dinner with Military Vets; some of them sitting in a wheelchair. The cast got to wear tuxes and dresses.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

On Monday, production continued in Atlanta. As revealed by dozens of Instagram Short Stories, the filming was a “smelly” adventure. The crew had to MacGyver their own nose-plugs  with tissues or ear-plugs to keep the smell away.

On Wednesday, Lucas Till gave a shout-out to the wardrobe crew; announcing it was going to be a “dirty day”. On the photo uploaded by Justin Hires, his clothes looked still clean, though. Holland Roden posted a photo of herself in a pretty black dress, indicating she might be part of that Foundation Dinner scene.

Yesterday, Justin Hires uploaded a photo of Mac, Bozer, Charlie and Riley around Mac’s fireplace. Because Jack is missing in the photo with everyone looking pensive and because George Eads hasn’t been seen on set for Episode 3×08 yet, fans keep asking the cast, the writers and the producers if George has left the show. Indeed, Peter Lenkov promised to make sure we’ll get to see more photos with Jack in it.

With showing us the script title page, Tristin Mays revealed on Wednesday that Episode 3×09 is titled “Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak”, written by Lindsey Allen and directed by Michael Martinez. Sounds dangerous. PAPR could be a Powered, Air-Purifying Respirator, so the perfect tool for a MacGyverism.

Lance Gross was back on set as Billy Colton yesterday and early morning today; uploading a few BtS videos as Short Stories on Instagram.

Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards wrapped the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand and arrived back in LA a few days ago. Theoretically, it’s possible for her character Leanna Martin to be back on the show by Episode 3×09, but we don’t have any further information yet.

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for a bald actor and for some of the main actors. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for a Diner Patron, Background Actors for an European Airport, for Police and for Guards. Overall, not many Casting Calls lately.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • The Season 2 DVD of the Reboot was released in the US on September 18, and there’s even loads of bonus material on it this time!
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver is still set to be released on BluRay on October 30. CBS even started doing promo for it.
  • Original MacGyver fans keep posting about both the MacGyver Funko Pop and the Escape Room Board Game; appreciating to finally have some “Mac Swag” after all these years.

MacGyver in Germany
To recap: Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) managed 1.79 million live-viewers, followed by the Season Finale Episode 2×23 (MacGyver + MacGyver) with 1.68 million live-viewers. Both episodes got a demo-rating of 7.4.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Overall, Season 2 had about 1.73 milllion live-viewers on average per episode and a demo-rating of 8.62. This is less than Season 1 reached (1.79 million live-viewers, demo 10.0), but enough to make the network happy. Also, the demo-ratings were better than Season 2 of Lethal Weapon airing in the same time-slot just before and better than SEAL Team episodes airing on the same day at 10pm.

The Original S1 BluRay is listed now on Amazon for preordering (release date: November 8). Weirdly, they put an FSK16 rating (16 years and older) on it – although the initial release on DVD is FSK12. Guess MacGyver in HD is too much to handle for some people *lol*.

MacGyver Reboot Update #57

The Season 2 Finale has aired four weeks ago, so no new episodes at the moment. Fans don’t have to be sad, though: Filming for Season 3 should start next month in Atlanta.

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

What are Cast and Crew up to?
The Season 2 Finale aired on May 4. Some of the cast and crew enjoyed some downtime while others already started working on new (and old) projects.

Reboot-related, it’s gotten pretty quiet on social media. Every now and then, cast or crew upload a never-seen-before BtS photo (e.g. Jake Alvarez or Steve Serna), but it’s not always clear what episode it belongs to.

Lucas Till has been spending some time in LA since production wrapped. Besides live-tweeting from the Paramount studio lot when the Season Finale aired, he also celebrated Peter Lenkov’s birthday. On May 19, he attended the 10-year-anniversary-screening (including a Q&A) for Dance of the Dead, a zombie comedy filmed when he was 16. On May 23, Lucas and his manager Tom attended one of Justin Hires’ stand-up-comedy-shows. Judging by the videos, they all had a good time.

Justin did a handful of comedy shows in different cities during the last few weeks. We haven’t heard any news about the movie project he is attached to. It’s possible the movie got delayed and might not go into production this year.

George Eads enjoyed some holidays on the Bahamas and keeps making the most of his time to spend with his family, the dogs or his two wheels.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov’s long-time dream project Magnum has been ordered to series by CBS; meaning that at the moment, he’s the showrunner for three shows (MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum) while co-producing another show (Salvation). He already had meetings with the writer’s team for Magnum; securing the first scripts.

Season 2 Ratings (encore)
As expected, there has been a slow, but steady loss of audience numbers nearing Summer. The Season Finale (2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver) reached 6.10 million live viewers and an all-time-low rating of 0.6 in demo. If you felt that my comments on the ratings in my latest blog update post (e.g. regarding risk of cancellation or budget cuts) were too negative, be aware that the other CBS shows have been suffering losses in ratings as well – even more this year since due to the Olympics, most Season Finale Episodes aired 2 to 4 weeks later than they usually do.

Lucas attending the 10-year-anniversary-screening for Dance of the Dead (via Gregg Bishop)

Looking at the Season Finale of Hawaii Five-0 on May 18, the show garnered an all-time-low of 6.62 million viewers and a 0.7 in demo when it aired between Celebrity Undercover Boss and a re-run of Blue Bloods. The ratings for the Season Finales might not be that important as how the shows did overall this season.

Due to Celebrity Undercover Boss, there are no Reboot re-runs at the moment – contrary to H50 or Blue Bloods. Last year, there had been MacGyver re-runs through all of June and the first half of July. Celebrity Undercover Boss is scheduled for Fridays 8pm until at least July 13, so we can only hope there will be some re-runs after that date to keep people interested in the show.

Season 3 News
Sadly, we didn’t get any additional promo by Lucas or Lenkov for the Season Finale. A year ago, Lucas attended the Corus Upfronts in Toronto and the Monte Carlo Television Festival during hiatus. It’s not clear yet if he will do some more promo this Summer as well before they start filming for Season 3.

Blast from the (not so distant) Past: Lucas Till attending the Photocall at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, June 2017 (via Ansa)

There’s a good chance there will be a Magnum Panel at Comic Con San Diego next month. If Lenkov attends, there’s a possibility of some interviews and him talking about MacGyver as well. It would be nice to hear something about Season 3 and what’s in store for us.

The Reboot has been renewed for a 3rd Season and will air in its old timeslot (Friday, 8pm), starting this Fall. The Premiere Date still hasn’t been set yet, but it’s probably either September 21 or September 28. Unless we hear otherwise, I’m assuming it will be a direct Full Season Order of 22 episodes.

Blast from the (not so distant) Past: Lucas Till attending the Corus Upfront Press Event (via Corus Entertainment)

Both Showrunner Peter Lenkov and Co-Showrunner Craig O’Neill signed on for a new overall deal for CBS TV Studios. Lenkov will continue as Executive Producer on his four drama series (MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, Magnum PI and Salvation). Additionally, he is ramping up his production company (101st Street Entertainment), to develop new projects. O’Neill also will continue as Executive Producer and Co-Showrunner on the Reboot, in addition to developing new series for broadcast, cable and streaming services.

Otherwise, there’s no mentionable news that I know of. No Casting Calls have been made yet. Last year, Justin Hires revealed the title of Episode 2×01 (DIY or DIE) around June 5 by posting a picture of the script title page on Instagram. If we’re lucky, someone will let us in on the secret for 3×01 soon.

MacGyver Reboot House location

I doubt it will matter much for filming, but: In case you have some spare money around, you can buy rebooted MacGyver’s house that they used to film some outside scenes; e.g. of them playing basketball in the S1 Pilot Episode. (As far as I know, they never filmed any scenes inside since the interior they used for filming is a stage set.)

The Vault: New/Old interview with Lucas Till
There were times when the promo load was so intense that I couldn’t cover it all in my blog posts. Here’s an excerpt of a Yahoo! interview done back in April 2017 for the Season 1 Finale.

Sometimes, all the experience in the world can’t help you and you just have to tough it out. “The Colton episode [episode 16, “Hook”], we start off in quicksand. That was weird. It was a cauldron of goo,” Till recalls, “We had to move it to another day because the goo was 215 degrees in some parts and 60 degrees in other parts. It had to be stirred like a witches cauldron. We got into it in wetsuits. And the compression… let’s just say your extremities can get a little bunched up. The pressure was insane!”

They couldn’t move until all the shots were done, so sweat began burning his eyes. “I started swatting at it, trying to get away. They actually inserted a fly, digitally,” to explain his odd behavior. Finally, they finished and he went back to his trailer to shower, only to find that a leak had sprung in the water heater, so the refreshing shower smelled like sulfur. Till doesn’t mind, though. “That pain, that weirdness, is where the fun and the better moments come from.”

I really want to see some BtS material of these two guys in a “cauldron”.

MacGyver in Germany
German FreeTV channel Sat.1 will start airing Season 2 on July 9. It’s not clear yet if they’ll also air the skipped Episode 1×19 (Compass) as promised. Like for Season 1 in June last year, they will air 2 episodes every Monday at prime time, starting 8.15pm – followed by the premiere of SEAL Team, another CBS show.

MacGyver Reboot Update #56

The Season 2 Finale has aired two weeks ago, so no new episodes at the moment. Fans don’t have to be sad, though: Filming for Season 3 should start in July in Atlanta.

What’s been happening lately?
Main production wrapped on March 24 and the Season 2 Finale aired on May 4. It’s been quiet on social media lately. Some of the cast and crew enjoyed holidays and birthday parties or celebrated sobriety milestones while others started working on new projects.

Sadly, there weren’t many BtS photos of the Extras and guest-stars for the S2 Finale Episode. Kevin Marshall Pinkney (Stand-In for Justin Hires) re-posted a BtS photo of the Stand-Ins of Season 2. Both Meredith Eaton and Justin Hires posted some more pictures of themselves with the main cast. Every now and then, cast or crew upload a never-seen-before BtS photo (e.g. Jake Alvarez), though it’s not always clear what episode it belongs to.

Lucas Till celebrating the birthday of his boss (via Peter Lenkov)

Lucas Till has been spending some time in LA since production wrapped. Together with cast mates Tristin Mays, George Eads and Executive Producer Peter Lenkov, he attended the Bad Ash Cigar Company Opening Party on April 21. (Bad Ash is run by Alan Cohen who worked on the Reboot as well.) He live-tweeted from the Paramount studio lot when the Season Finale aired, but also celebrated Peter Lenkov’s birthday with a giant steak on May 9. (Lenkov reposted a cropped version of the photo on May 15; stating that he misses his “third son”.)

Tomorrow, Lucas will attend a Q&A to celebrate the 10-year-anniversary of his movie Dance of the Dead, a zombie comedy filmed when he was 16.

Season 2 Ratings
There has been a slow, but steady loss of audience numbers nearing Summer. To freshen up your memory: Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) pulled in 6.26 million live viewers, but lost in the important demo-rating and only got an 0.7 in the important demo group of 18-49 year-olds. Sadly, May 4 was a bad day for TV in general – after a difficult week overall with lower ratings: Basketball Games and sunny weather managed to impact the amount of people tuning in to regular TV. All shows struggled with a loss of ratings and audience numbers; the CBS shows included.

Episode 2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

While Hawaii Five-0 lost about 800’000 viewers and 0.2 in ratings compared to the week before, the Season 2 Finale of MacGyver only lost about 150’000 viewers and 0.1 in demo. Still, the overall numbers by themselves didn’t look too well, since Episode 2×23 reached 6.10 million live viewers and an all-time-low rating of 0.6 in demo. Demo-ratings like these often leads to shows being cancelled or suffering budget-cuts, so lets hope CBS sees this as a one-time-deal and believes in Season 3 getting higher ratings again.

Back in September 2017, TV by the Numbers had predicted that CBS would most likely take over the No. 1 spot in both viewers and adults 18-49 on Friday. And yes, they had been right – although Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods again did better in the ratings than the Reboot. The Season 2 Finale included, Season 2 of MacGyver had an average demo-rating of 0.83 with 6.86 million live-viewers per episode. Looking at the Season 2 Premiere with 6.69 million live-viewers (and a demo of 0.8), the show didn’t lose too many viewers over the season, even surpassing 8 million live-viewers (with a demo of 1) around mid-season.

Season 1 vs Season 2 Audience Numbers (via DashboardOnFire)

It would have been nice if the show had ended with higher ratings, though – especially when considering the competing shows in the same timeslot were not as strong this season as they were in 2016/17 for Season 1. Also, the show could use some “safety-cushion” since competition will be stronger this Fall, so the ratings for Season 3 might be affected (see more about that further down).

When Limitless got cancelled by CBS in 2016 after only one season, it had ended with less than 6 million live-viewers, but a better demo-rating of 1.14. In general, it had also better ratings than the Reboot on average per episode (7.05 million live-viewers with 1.34 in demo). Of course, the Reboot has a well-known name and better marketing and franchise potential. Along with Lethal Weapon, it was one of the best-sold show for international markets at the Upfronts 2016. Also, the syndication potential might help to achieve a fourth season (since syndication needs 88 episodes nowadays), but after that, it might be fair game and risking cancellation (as happened with Scorpion this year).

Sneak Peeks and other Promo
Matt Carter published an interview with Meredith Eaton on May 3rd; asking several questions about the Season 2 Finale. Meredith was careful not to reveal too much about the up-coming plot twist, so I was a bit suprised when CBS released 3 Sneak Peeks; two of them spoiling a majority of the fans who hadn’t yet figured out who MacGyver Senior is. Entertainment Tonight shared another exclusive Sneak Peek, also with Mac and his father.

BtS photo of Episode 2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver (via Meredith Eaton)

Otherwise, there wasn’t much promo for a Season Finale; especially compared to the Season 1 Finale. I had hoped to get a new Interview with Lucas or Lenkov; e.g. a short overview of the season and what we can expect for the next one. In an interview with GQ, Henry Winkler talked about many topics, but also about the Reboot:

When they rebooted it, it was in my contract to be part of the series. I was supposed to be in name only, but I get along so well with the man who runs it, Peter Lenkov, that I go in and edit the show with him. We sit in the room and have a fabulous time together. It was picked up for a third season, so I’m doing nothing but saying thank you, thank you lord. A lot of shows never get to the third season. There’s an alchemy [to making a TV show] I don’t even get after all of these years. It’s a miracle! All you can do is the best that you can bring to the moment, that day, on the show. And everything else, you just have to let it melt into the cosmos. You have no control.

Season 3 News: Speculations
The Reboot has been renewed for a 3rd Season. The Premiere Date hasn’t been set yet, but it should be sometime in September. Shortly before the CBS Upfronts on May 16, CBS released the schedule for their Fall shows and revealed that the Reboot will stay in its old timeslot of Friday, 8pm. Unless we hear otherwise, I’m assuming it will be a direct Full Season Order of 22 episodes again.

Tristin Mays and Lucas Till at the Bad Ash Cigar Company Opening (via Alan Cohen)

We haven’t heard any new infos about the cast for next season, either. Justin Hires is attached to produce and star in Homecoming, a comedic movie he also wrote the script for. It looks like the project got delayed, so I’m not sure what this means for Justin’s involvement. If I remember correctly, the movie was supposed to film this summer, so I assumed Bozer might have reduced on-screen-time in the beginning of Season 3. Either the movie will be made next year, or Bozer might go on extended vacation – unless Justin is willing to juggle both projects by dropping out of playing one of the Homecoming lead roles.

Kate Bond’s character Jill was listed as recurring cast for Episode 2×23, which means she will probably be a recurring character for the show for next season. Due to the ending of the Season Finale, it seems necessary that Oversight (played by Tate Donovan) will return as a recurring character as well. (I would be disappointed if he just vanished again after Episode 3×01.)

In the Season Finale Episode, Matty offered Bozer’s girlfriend Leanna a job at Phoenix. Reign Edwards’ level of engagement may vary, depending if she’s a field agent or rather staying in the lab. Also, while Reign just finished her long run on The Bold and the Beautiful, she’s back for her “old” show Snowfall. Since that show only has 10 episodes per season and premieres in July as a Summer show, she could manage to be a regular cast member on the Reboot for the full Season.

Lucas Till and George Eads at the Bad Ash Cigar Company Opening (via Alan Cohen)

I’m not sure yet about the guest cast.  Jermaine Rivers will be back on the new season of The Gifted. Both Javicia Leslie (Jesse Colton) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Mama Colton) are attached to new TV shows this fall while Lance Gross (Billy Colton) will probably be working on his renewed show Star again. The Season Finale Episode implied that Billy expects Riley to make a decision that will have an impact on their relationship, but it’s not clear yet if that means Billy will be seen more often or completey fall out of the picture. There could be trouble in Paradise if Riley decides to say “No” to Billy’s offer to come working with the Coltons, after all.

I’m assuming we will see Riley’s parents (Michael Michele and Billy Baldwin) again in at least one episode. David Dastmalchian’s Murdoc is a likely bet and Michael Des Barres and his fans have been very vocal about wanting him being back for another episode.

Live-Tweeting for the Season Finale (via Peter Lenkov)

On May 2nd, a Portuguese news outlet did an interview with Diogo Morgado (who played Mac’s friend Carlos in Episode 2×21); “revealing” that he will come back as a recurring character next season. Diogo denied the statement, saying that there is a misquote in said interwiew and that nothing has been decided yet. Thinking about the plot twist in the Season Finale, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have MacGyver help Carlos re-building more homes in Puerto Rico in the Season 3 Premiere.

Peter Lenkov’s long-time dream project Magnum has been ordered to series by CBS; meaning that at the moment, he’s the showrunner for three shows (MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum) while co-producing another show (Salvation). Since both Magnum and H50 are being filmed in Hawaii, we’ll have to wait if that means he might temporarily move there to oversee things and if his involvement for the MacGyver Reboot will change if the work-load gets too much. Technically, editing work can be done anywhere with the right equipment, so maybe there will be no changes (besides seeing a bunch of Magnum BtS material on Lenkov’s Instagram).

Season 3 News: The Schedule
As mentioned above, Season 3 will air on Friday 8pm, followed by Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods as usual. Let’s take a look at the competition, which is stronger than last year and might have an impact on the ratings.

Friday 8pm schedule 2018/19 (via SpoilerTV)

Good News first: Similar to Season 2, Dynasty (CW) shouldn’t be a problem since its ratings are marginal (690’000 live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.19).

Blindspot (NBC) also got the same timeslot again. It had about 3.3 million live-viewers this season with a demo of 0.62 so far (the Season Finale will air today). It lost in ratings since its last season and is down to 2.8 million live-viewers at the moment, but has a similar target audience age-wise. The ones that avidly watched Blindspot so far will probably stick to it. If they want a change in “drama scenery”, they might flock over to MacGyver (and vice versa).

The situation with Last Man Standing (FOX) is a bit unique. It was the biggest competition against the Reboot in 2016 with about 6.4 million live-viewers on average and a demo of 1.15, sometimes surpassing the Reboot in the demo ratings. It got cancelled in 2017 and will be “resurrected” this year.

BtS photo of Episode 2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver (via Justin Hires)

Interestingly, the show had started with less than 6 million live-viewers on the day the Reboot premiered, then started to gain in audience numbers for every episode as the Reboot gradually lost some viewers. This might indicate that the shows shared a part of their audience; the Tim Allen fans going back to the show after snooping in for the Reboot. I guess it depends how strong the show will come back, but I think it will definitely affect the Reboot audience numbers – and if it’s as strong as before it was cancelled, maybe even cost MacGyver its usual timeslot win.

The two shows on ABC are comedies with a new timeslot. Fresh Off The Boat had about 3.8 million live-viewers last season with a demo of 1. Spechless had about 4.3 million live-viewers and a demo of 1.1. For both shows, that’s more than Once Upon A Time had last year in the 8pm timeslot and could cost the Reboot a few more viewers.

New/Old BtS photo of Season 2 (via Jake Alvarez)

The Cool Kids is a new show, so no clue how it will do. I’ll say most people watching Last Man Standing might either stay on FOX for this one or switch over to ABC for some more comedy.

In General, Season 2 of MacGyver was weaker in ratings than Season 1, but a lot stronger when it comes to the writing and the storylines. It also had some interesting guest-stars. The competing shows are stronger this year, but if the writers turn it up a notch with writing even better scripts and if the Reboot gets the same (or even a higher budget) as for Season 2, I think it can do well and succeed in getting renewed for another season.

MacGyver in Austria
The rerun of Season 1 does still pretty well in Austria. The live-audience numbers were usually in the range of 50-60’000 viewers, but fell to a meager 26’000 three weeks ago. The numbers made it back to 47’000 two weeks ago and up to 53’000 last Saturday.

There’s finally a date for the DVD-Release for Season 1 in Germany (July 6), but still no further infos about the extras on the Amazon DVD version yet. The version sold in Switzerland (starting July 5) will contain the same extras as the UK and the French version.

MacGyver Reboot Update #55

It’s Season Finale Friday! Fans don’t have to be sad, though: The show will come back for a third season!

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about Mac’s father and about storylines in Seasons 2 and 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

What’s been happening lately?
Main production wrapped on March 24, cast and crew celebrating a small Wrap Party in Atlanta the next day. There was another wrap party in LA on April 21.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov took the opportunity to get the cast to sign some hats for his son’s project “Wyatt’s Garage“.  The main cast signed a hat that was auctioned off for a good cause last week (the auction closed at 750 US Dollars). Another hat signed by Lucas Till was auctioned off this week, closing at 335 US Dollars.

Some of the LA-based  guest-stars had attended the Wrap Party in LA as well. Besides David Dastmalchian (Murdoc), Lance Gross (Billy Colton), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Mama Colton) or Michael Des Barres (Helman), Diogo Morgado (Mac’s friend Carlos from Episode 2×21) was part of the festivities.

The cast continued to post some BtS photos every now and then, but it got awfully quiet before Season Finale day. Both Justin Hires and Meredith Eaton posted some nice pictures of themselves with the main cast.

Stand-Ins for Season 2 (via Kevin Marshall Pinkney)

While we got some BtS photos of the Extras and guest-stars for Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) last week (e.g. via Christopher Frontiero), there weren’t many yet for today. Kevin Marshall Pinkney, Stand-In for Justin Hires, posted a BtS photo of the Stand-Ins of Season 2. Stuntman Eric Van Arsdale posted a BtS video while filming the hangar-scene in Episode 2×02 (Muscle Car + Paper Clips). Also, we got a look at the Script Title Page of the Unaired Pilot we shouldn’t talk about.

Season 2 Ratings
As expected, there has been a slow, but steady loss of audience numbers nearing Summer. To freshen up your memory: Episode 2×20 (Skyscraper – Power) had an audience of 6.38 million live viewers (with a 0.8 in the important demo-group) while Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water) managed 6.27 million live viewers (also with a 0.8 rating in demo).

Last week’s Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) pulled in 6.26 million live viewers, but lost in the important demo-rating and only got all-time-low of 0.7. Hopefully, it gets better ratings in tonight’s Season 2 Finale.

Looking at the 22 episodes aired so far, Season 2 had an average demo-rating of 0.84 with 6.90 million live-viewers per episode. Compared to the Season 2 Premiere with 6.69 million live-viewers (and a demo of 0.8), the show didn’t lose many viewers over the season. It had pretty good ratings around mid-season, Episode 2×13 (CO2 Sensor + Tree Branch) with Ashley Tisdale reaching 8.14 million live-viewers (with a demo of 1).

Official Stills, Press Releases and other Promo
At the end of Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water), Lucas Till took part of a short PSA in the “CBS cares” series; informing about Hurricane Relief for Puerto Rico. He did another piece on Lupus, which might air sometime this month since May is “Lupus Awareness Month”.

Only a few hours before the premiere of Episode 2×22 last week, SpoilerTV added more Stills and one Sneak Peek. There were a few exclusive storyline insights and an exclusive First Look of Tate Donovan as Oversight via TVLine as well, but I felt a bit annoyed that CBS has been so late with regular promo material for the last five or six episodes.

For today, they were a day early; releasing 3 Sneak Peeks. While one featured Riley’s father Elwood meeting her new not-Boyfriend, the other 2 were scenes with Mac and his dad; therefore revealing already who MacGyver Senior is. Entertainment Tonight shared another exclusive Sneak Peek, also with Mac and his father. While it’s not so surprising to find out who Mac’s dad is after reading the Press Release, I’m still a bit surprised that they actually chose to reveal the big plot twist they have been building up over the whole season so many hours in advance.

Matt Carter published an interview with Meredith Eaton on May 3rd; asking her about the Season 2 Finale and her character Matty. She revealed that the actors aren’t privy to the process of writing, so she was playing a character with secrets without really knowing what the secret actually was. She also stated that last week’s confrontation scene with Jack (2×22: UFO + Area 51) was one of her favorite scenes to film so far.

Technical Advisor Rhett Allain published an article about the MacGyverism Mac had used for celestial navigation last week.

Last year, the show got its one and only Primetime Emmy Nomination for Stunts (Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series or Movie). Despite not being invited to be back on Season 3, Stunt Coordinator Jeff Wolfe handed in another Stunt Reel for the Emmy Awards. Let’s hope it scores another nomination – or even better – the win!

Cast and Character News
The Reboot has been renewed for a 3rd Season. We should get more information shortly before the CBS Upfronts on May 16. For now, I’m assuming it will be a direct Full Season Order of 22 episodes again, with a Premiere date in September, airing on Fridays 8pm. It’s also safe to assume that the entire main cast will be back.

I speculated in my last blog post that some guests attending the LA Wrap Party could hint at them being back next Season. At least for Diogo Morgado, that seemed to ring true – for maybe half a day: A Portuguese news outlet that recently did an interview with Diogo “revealed” on May 2nd that he will come back as a recurring character next season. The article created quite a hubbubb among his fans and the fansites; sharing the news on Instagram and Twitter. Hours later, Diogo denied the statement, saying that there is a misquote in said interwiew and that nothing has been decided yet.

Well, nothing has been decided yet doesn’t mean explicitly no and it seems interesting that the interviewer added that filming will begin in July. Either someone spilled the beans too early, or there have been discussions. Another appearance by Carlos wouldn’t seem that far-fetched, anyway.

The Press Release for tonight’s Season Finale (2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver) confirmed that Billy Baldwin (Elwood), Lance Gross (Billy Colton) and Reign Edwards (Leanna) are back. Both Lance and Reign are attached to shows and projects already, but that shouldn’t stop them from making an appearance next season; along with the other Colton family members. David Dastmalchian’s Murdoc is a likely bet and Michael Des Barres and his fans have been very vocal about wanting to see him back on the show.

Kate Bond’s character Jill is listed as recurring cast for tonight’s episode, which means she will probably be the first recurring character for the show. Depending how today’s Season Finale ends and how much drama is still unresolved, it’s also very likely that Oversight (played by Tate Donovan) will return as a recurring character.

A year ago (April 14, 2017), Lucas Till made following statement in an interview with Yahoo! for the Season 1 Finale:

Till definitely has hopes for next season — although, since he isn’t a writer, he doesn’t have much say in it. “More women would be good. The guy had a new girl every episode and it was definitely a talking point when my reps were talking to me about why I should do this.”

Hm. That didn’t really happen, did it? There were girls, but they either died (Zoe in 2×10), were exes that had broken his heart (Allie in 2×13) or were fake-wives that already belonged to someone else (Leanna in 2×16). Wonder what will be in store for next season?

In fact, the writers do have a “just awesome” plan for him, but it’s too early to spill the beans on anything just yet. “I think the show is just going to continue to be really, really fun. So, I’m excited!”

I wonder if he meant tonight’s plot twist or just the fact that Mac is finally meeting his father today. I hope we get a new Interview with Lucas soon; e.g. a short overview of this season and what he’s expecting for the next one.

MacGyver in Austria
The rerun of Season 1 does still pretty well in Austria. The live-audience numbers are usually in the range of 50-60’000 viewers, but fell to a meager 26’000 last Saturday. This might have been due to the warm weekend weather or the airing of Formula 1 before.

There’s finally a date for the DVD-Release for Season 1 in Germany: July 6. There’s no further infos on the extras yet, but of course I hope there will be the same Extras on it as for the UK and the French version.
