MacGyver Reboot Update #85

It might take a while until we get to see the episodes on TV, but we don’t have to wait too long for new BtS material: Filming for Season 4 will start on July 8.

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 4 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

What are Cast and Crew up to?
The main cast was pretty busy in recent weeks:

  • Lucas Till wrapped his movie “Son of the South” and promoted the upcoming Season of MacGyver at the Corus Upfronts in Toronto. It looks like he’s enjoying a well-deserved holiday at the moment.
  • Justin Hires dropped the first music video “Fire Flame” for his upcoming album. He did more comedy shows and visited several radio and TV stations (e.g. WJZ in Baltimore) for interviews.
  • Tristin Mays’ short movie “Breathe” is temporarily available on Amazon Prime in the US/UK. She also attended some red carpet premieres and travelled to Jamaica this week to attend some fundraising events for the RuJohn Foundation.
  • Besides working out, Levy Tran has been taking shooting lessons to prepare for Season 4. She recently did a short interview with the Chi Creative Agency.
  • Like last year, David Dastmalchian auctioned off a visit to the MacGyver set for a good cause. It was sold for 17’000 USD. The set-visit last year was auctioned off for 12’000 USD, so that’s pretty cool.
  • George Eads’ Korean War movie “The Battle of Jangsari” has been picked up for international distribution
  • Amazon Studios has picked up “The Wilds”, the series that Reign Edwards filmed the pilot for in New Zealand last year

Reboot-related, it was still pretty quiet on social media. Costume Designer Sarah Downer revealed on Tuesday via Instagram stories that she has started on costume prepping.

BtS photo of Episode 3×21: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (via Robert Maxfield)

Every now and then, a new/old BtS photo (e.g. of Tristin Mays in costume fitting for Episode 3×11) pops up. Boom Operator Robert Maxfield uploaded several photos recently as well; e.g. of Lucas, Levy and Justin on set of Episode 3×21. CBS shared a new photo of Lucas and Tate Donovan on set of Episode 3×22 for father’s day.

Technical Consultant Rhett Allain continued writing science notes about the MacHacks; adding a blog post each for Episode 2×09 (CD-Rom + Hoagie Foil), for Episode 2×10 (War Room + Ship) and for Episode 2×11 (Bullet + Pen).

Ratings prediction for Season 4 (encore)
Season 3 had an average of 6.107 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.70. Usually, a new season of an ongoing Fall show continues in ratings the way it ended its last season; rising up a bit towards midseason before dropping again.

BtS photo of Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Sarah Downer)

On average, every non-rookie CBS Fall show lost about 17.61% in demo ratings and 12.94% in audience numbers this year. MacGyver was in the same range (with a loss of 15.79% in demo and 11.01% in audience numbers compared to Season 2). So if MacGyver would have continued in the same timeslot this Fall, Season 4 could have ended up with an average demo-rating of 0.59 and a live-audience of 5.43 million viewers. That’s… not great. The Reboot is the lowest-rated show that had premiered last Fall and got renewed. So the expected demo-rating is probably one of the main reasons why the show lost its Fall slot.

Predicting the Season 4 ratings is pretty much impossible at this moment, though – since we don’t know yet when and in what timeslot the show will come back. I will try to make another prediction once the Fall shows have already aired the first few episodes.

In case you’re interested: If Hawaii Five-0 has the same ratings drop as it did this season, it will end up with an average demo of 0.62 (-18.9%) and 6.27 million viewers (-13.05%) per episode. It will be interesting to see how much the move to MacGyver‘s old time slot will influence the ratings loss. It is very likely that CBS trying to help Magnum PI doesn’t just hurt the ratings for MacGyver, but for H50 as well.

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via TV Insider)

CBS has several mediocre-rated shows on TV this Fall, but it’s difficult to say what they expect for MacGyver and what they will be willing to tolerate before cancelling it. In general, midseason shows aren’t very famous for their ratings; so CBS probably doesn’t expect too much anyway. As mentioned in my last Reboot Update blog post, both CBS rookie Spring shows this year failed ratings-wise:

  • The Red Line ended its run of 8 episodes with 3.85 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.36 per episode and won’t come back for another season.
  • After 8 episodes, The Code (Mondays 9pm) is at 5.10 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.57 on average. Apparently, that isn’t good enough for CBS since they even pulled it off schedule temporarily; replacing it with reruns of Magnum PI. The show has 4 more episodes to go, but is already cancelled.

Summer Show Blood & Treasure (Tuesdays 10pm) aired 6 episodes so far. The average at the moment is 4.55 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.50 per episode.

All you need to know about Season 4
As we all know by now, the show has been shoved to midseason. Its Friday Fall timeslot at 8pm will be taken over by Hawaii Five-0, followed by Magnum PI at 9pm. They just announced the premiere Fall dates for CBS, but there’s no information yet about any of the premiere dates for midseason shows.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

Here’s what we know so far:

There’s no Casting Calls out yet, but it shouldn’t be long for the first postings.

(For daily news about Season 4 and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

Timeslot prediction for Season 4 (encore)
Although they start filming on July 8, it could take another half a year until we get official news about the premiere date and the timeslot. And while many have speculated about a start in January 2020, remember this: With probably only getting 13 episodes, Season 4 wouldn’t need to start airing before June to be done in time for the new Fall shows to start in September.

Cover Art for debut single “Fire Flame” (via Justin Hires)

There’s several possibilities:

  • The Reboot could take over the 1-hour-timeslot of a rookie show or any other show that didn’t get a full season order, so probably premiering in January 2020. This is the most likely option.
  • The Reboot could take over the timeslot of a show with a full season order of 22 episodes that doesn’t get reruns after the season finale, so probably premiering in April or May 2020.
  • The Reboot could take over the 1-hour-timeslot of a crime show that got pulled early. This seems rather unlikely, but could happen anytime.

Lets revisit the CBS Fall schedule again. Potential one-hour-timeslots for MacGyver to start in January could be Mondays 9pm (in place of All Rise), Thursdays 10pm (Evil) or Sundays 10pm (Madam Secretary). But besides Amazing Race (that has a history of airing on whatever day being available), there are also 3 other crime shows needing a one-hour-slot during midseason: Tommy (most likely Mondays or Sundays), FBI: Most Wanted (most likely Tuesdays or Sundays) and Criminal Minds (most likely Wednesdays).

CBS Fall 2019 Schedule (via World Screen)

So… what’s the speculation? Well, mine goes like this:

  • If All Rise doesn’t get a back-order, Monday 9pm in January seems the most likely option. That would make MacGyver the lead-in for Bull; taking over Magnum PI‘s old timeslot. This is an option that other prediction sites already had in mind for last year when Magnum was announced being one of the new Fall shows for 2018.
  • But what if All Rise DOES get a back-order? Then, it seems more likely they’ll wait for another timeslot in April or May since Sunday 10pm is better fitted for Tommy or the FBI Spinoff. Also, Evil created the most buzz so far; probably getting a full season.

Yes, that would be quite a long wait. But all the other crime shows got a full-season order, so there’s no chance for another early timeslot unless they either pull or pause a show due to bad ratings. (They paused SEAL Team for almost 3 months in the middle of the season for another show, and that didn’t turn out too well) And MacGyver probably can’t hold the ratings in a 10pm timeslot anyway, so we should be happy if it doesn’t land there. (The bigger the ratings drop, the smaller the chances for a 5th season.)

Lucas Till at the Corus Upfronts 2019 (via Candids Toronto)

Note that rookie shows usually DO get reruns if they get a full season order. Which leaves… Friday as another likely option; depending on what day they’ve planned for Undercover Boss to air (Celebrity Undercover Boss aired Fridays 8pm in Summer 2018). So the MacGyver Reboot could actually end up in its old timeslot again, followed by reruns of either Magnum or H50 and reruns of Blue Bloods. Which isn’t great, but isn’t the worst that could happen. Not to forget that on TV, anything can happen… I will try to make another prediction once the Fall shows have already aired a few episodes.

The Corus Upfronts and other MacGyver Promo
Lucas Till promoted the upcoming season at the Corus Upfronts in Toronto. It was a pleasant surprise to see BtS photos of interviews and of him posing with fans pop up on social media on Monday. So far, there haven’t been any interviews released yet since they probably hold onto the promo material for the upcoming season.

Nominations for the Teen Choice Awards (via CBS)

Both the Reboot and Lucas Till have been nominated in the 1st wave of nominees for the Teen Choice Awards. You can cast your vote (up to 10 votes per category per day per entry method) on the official website or via Twitter. Lucas had already been nominated last year, but lost out to Flash‘s lead hero. Voting for the 1st wave is open until June 25, so you still have time to get Lucas to win one of those TCA surfboards! And retweets count as well, so you don’t even have to write your own tweets to support the show!

It’s still a long way until we get new episodes to enjoy and there’s no news about the Season 3 DVD yet. But here’s what we know so far about other upcoming promo stuff:

  • The French DVD for Season 2 will be released on July 24 (instead of July 17)
  • The German DVD for Season 2 will be released on August 15 (instead of July 11)
  • “The Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day” will be released on September 17 as planned

MacGyver Reboot Update #84

What a bummer: Although renewed for another Season, the show was moved to midseason, getting an order of 13 episodes only. Filming will start in July like last year, though.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
The Season 3 Finale aired on May 10. Some of the cast and crew enjoyed some downtime while others worked on different projects. Lucas Till wrapped his movie Son of the South a few weeks ago. He “disappeared” for two weeks – only to pop up at the Corus Upfronts in Toronto (more about that further down).

Tristin Mays at the IFS screening for “Breate” (via Troy Curvey)

The rest of the main cast was pretty busy in recent months as well:

  • Justin Hires dropped the first single for his upcoming album. He has a new website and filmed a music video this week.
  • Tristin Mays’ short “Breathe” was screened at IFS (Independent Filmmakers Showcase) in LA last month. She already won in the category “Best Actress” at “FirstGlance Film Fest Hollywood” back in March and reviews are good, but there’s no official release date yet.
  • George Eads’ Korean War movie “The Battle of Jangsari” has been picked up for international distribution.
  • Levy Tran went back to her old job and spent time with her family. She is busy packing this week – probably preparing to come back to Atlanta for Season 4.
  • Amazon Studios has picked up “The Wilds”, the series that Reign Edwards filmed the pilot for in New Zealand last year. It’s not clear yet if Reign is still part of the project (we all remember the Unaired MacGyver Reboot Pilot), but if she is, that means we might probably have to say goodbye to Leanna for good.

Reboot-related, it’s gotten pretty quiet on social media before the Corus Upfronts. Every now and then, a new/old BtS photo (e.g. of Justin Hires or of Lucas Till in Episode 2×01) pops up.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

Isabel DeLaCruz briefly talked about working on Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water) in a podcast. Technical Consultant Rhett Allain continued uploading blog posts with science notes about the MacHacks. He’s intent on finishing Season 2 during the hiatus; adding blog posts for Episode 2×06 (Jet Engine + Pickup Truck), for Episode 2×07 (Duct Tape + Jack) and for Episode 2×08 (Packing Peanuts + Fire).

About the Season 3 Ratings (Encore)
Let’s revisit the ratings. To freshen up your memory: The Season Finale had 5.472 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6. In the +7 Ratings, it added 1.588 million viewers (+29%), reaching a total of 7.063 million viewers and a demo of 0.93 (+44%).

The Reboot ended Season 3 with an average of 6.107 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.70. Comparing to Season 2, the show lost about 16% in demo and roughly 11% in live audience numbers.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

Compared to the 26 scripted shows on CBS during the 2018-2019 Season, the Reboot made rank 22 in demo and rank 13 in audience numbers. Compared to the Summer shows on CBS at the moment, it would be at rank 2 in demo and first in audience, but we can’t assume the Reboot will be able to keep its current ratings when airing midseason.

Overall, CBS lost quite a bit in the demo ratings. This happened to the other networks as well – but compared to the ratings 7 years ago, it lost the most; experience an average demo drop of more than 65%.

Ratings prediction for Season 4
Usually, a new season of an ongoing Fall show continues in ratings in September the way it ended its last season. Then, it hopefully rises up and peaks around Christmas before dropping again – which did indeed happen for Season 3. Predicting the Season 4 ratings is pretty much impossible at this moment, though – since we don’t know yet in what timeslot the show will end up in and if it will air as a Winter, Spring or Summer show. Sadly, midseason shows aren’t very famous for their ratings in general.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via Lucas Till)

For comparison: The first season of Salvation (another project Executive Producer Peter Lenkov was involved in) in 2016 had a demo rating of 0.52 and 3.53 million viewers per episode. The second season managed a demo of 0.33 and 2.67 million viewers before it was cancelled in 2017. Before Code Black was moved to midseason, it had quite decent ratings: its demo was at 0.93. After being shoved to midseason for Season 3 in 2018, it ended on a demo rating of 0.7 (and 5.66 million live-viewers) and was cancelled.

CBS has several mediocre-rated shows on TV this Fall, so they’re tolerating shows to drop lower in ratings than they used to a few years ago. But it’s difficult to say what CBS will expect ratings-wise for MacGyver and what it will be willing to tolerate before cancelling it. Whatever timeslot the Reboot ends up in, the ratings will surely drop lower than they would have otherwise.

Justin Hires at West Palm Beach Improv (via Ulysses Burdenii)

It’s worth noting that both rookie Spring shows this year on CBS failed – they haven’t been renewed yet and didn’t get a back-order, so they’re essentially cancelled. After 8 episodes so far, The Code (Mondays 9pm) is at 5.10 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.57 on average. The Red Line (Sundays 8pm) ended its run of 8 episodes with 3.85 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.36 per episode.

Summer Show Blood & Treasure (Tuesdays 10pm) aired 4 episodes so far. The average at the moment is 4.94 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.56. It could stabilize because it has a great lead-in with NCIS and FBI.

All you need to know about Season 4
On May 9, CBS finally broke the news that MacGyver has been renewed for another Season. Sadly, the celebration got ruined not even a week later: The show won’t come back this year since it was being shoved to mid-season. Its Friday Fall timeslot at 8pm will be taken over by Hawaii Five-0, since Magnum PI will be airing on Fridays at 9pm.

So far, there’s no reruns planned for MacGyver either during the hiatus. The 8pm Friday timeslot is filled with “Whistleblower” and “Love Island” at the moment. Starting August 9, they will run Hawaii Five-0 reruns at 8pm, followed by Magnum reruns at 9pm and Blue Bloods reruns at 10pm; testing the new schedule for Fall Season. The same is happening on Wednesday, with CBS foregoing reruns of SEAL Team to air reruns of SWAT instead.

CBS Fall 2019 Schedule (via World Screen)

Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season:

  • Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) will replace Craig O’Neill as new Co-Showrunner besides Executive Producer Peter Lenkov.
  • As Peter Lenkov stated, they will start filming in July as usual, so in about 4 weeks.
  • As Justin Hires revealed, they will film 13 episodes for now; filming from July to December. (The order for only half a season was later confirmed by Lenkov.)

There’s no further information about returning cast and crew. There’s also no Casting Calls out yet. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

(For daily news about Season 4 and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

They might start filming soon, but if we’re unlucky, it could take another half a year until we get official news about the premiere date and the timeslot. There’s several possibilities:

  • The Reboot could take over the 1-hour-timeslot of a rookie show or any other show that didn’t get a full season order, so probably premiering in January 2020. This is the most likely option. Good thing: We don’t have to wait too long and there’s room for more than 13 episodes. Bad thing: Options are Mondays 9pm (in place of All Rise), Thursdays 10pm (Evil) or even Sundays 10pm (Madam Secretary) – which probably doesn’t bode well for ratings since MacGyver has all the charactericstics of being an 8pm show. Shows often drop heavily in ratings when being shoved to a later timeslot (see Scorpion or Bull). Also, Sundays is considered the “Death Slot” on CBS (contrary to Fridays on other networks).
  • The Reboot could take over the timeslot of a show with a full season order of 22 episodes that doesn’t get reruns after the season finale. Good thing: It could get an 8pm slot and even air on Fridays again. Bad thing: That would still mean we would have to wait until April or even May next year – which probably doesn’t bode well for ratings either since this would essentially make it a Summer show. (With only having 13 episodes, it wouldn’t need to start airing before June to be done in time for the new Fall shows to start in September.)
  • The Reboot could take over the 1-hour-timeslot of a crime show that got pulled early. Good thing: We don’t have to wait too long and there’s room for more than 13 episodes. It could even end up on Friday again. Bad thing: Who wants to take over the timeslot of a show that failed spectacularly or got pulled because of a scandal? Also, this doesn’t happen very often; especially not with shows that made it further than the first season.

At the moment, it’s too early to speculate about it too much. Some rookie shows generated more buzz than others, but it’s still difficult to determine which show will be successful with a back-order and which might end after half a season; being replaced by MacGyver.

The Corus Upfronts and other MacGyver Promo
Like back in 2017, Lucas Till promoted the upcoming season at the Corus Upfronts in Toronto for GlobalTV. It was a pleasant surprise to see BtS photos of interviews and of him posing with fans pop up on social media on Monday. So far, there haven’t been any interviews released yet.

Apparently, the MacGyver Manual got a new cover and title once again: It’s now called “The Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day”. The release date stays the same (September 17) and it still has 208 pages, but it contains now 155 MacHacks instead of 153.

MacGyver in France
After keeping stable and peaking at Episode 3×14, the ratings in France have been dropping since Episode 3×15.

As you can see, the numbers for the Season finale were a bit disastrous, but that’s probably because of an important European Soccer Game on another channel airing at the same time.

The French DVD for Season 2 will be released on July 24. There’s still no further information about the extras.

MacGyver Reboot Update #83

Although the show got renewed for another Season, fans are pretty bummed: Season 4 was moved to midseason, getting an order of 13 episodes only. That means we have to wait until next year for the Season 4 Premiere.

About the Season Finale (Episode 3×22)
Although it was the Season Finale, CBS didn’t provide any additional promo for this episode. They did release three Sneak Peeks, though. Thankfully, the Official Stills were posted on SpoilerTV this time.

Since the episode has been filmed a while ago, I couldn’t find any of the guest stars uploading BtS photos. They mostly posted some screenshots of their scenes. Since the cast and crew is either on holiday or working on other projects now, there was hardly any live-tweeting and posting. At least the official CBS account posted several interesting BtS photos on Instagram.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

On May 12, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded the blog post with science notes about the MacHacks in this episode. He later added a blog post for Episode 2×05 (Skull + Electromagnet) and for Episode 2×06 (Jet Engine + Pickup Truck) as well; intent on finishing Season 2 during the hiatus.

Let’s take a look at the ratings for the last few episodes. To freshen up your memory: Episode 3×21 had 5.326 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6, making it the episode with the lowest ratings this season. In the +7 Ratings, it added 1.511 million viewers (+28%), reaching a total of 6.840 million viewers with a demo of 0.93 (+50%).

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

Episode 3×22 fared a bit better: It had 5.472 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6. In the +7 Ratings, it added 1.588 million viewers (+29%), reaching a total of 7.063 million viewers and a demo of 0.93 (+44%).

About the Season 3 Ratings
The Reboot ended Season 3 with an average of 6.107 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.70. Episode 3×14 airing on February 1st had the highest audience number.

Comparing to last season, Season 3 lost about 16% in demo and roughly 11% in live audience numbers. As in Seasons 1 and 2, the ratings peaked around midseason before dropping again.

MacGyver Audience Numbers Overview (graph by DashboardOnFire)

Back in September 2018, the Hollywood Reporter predicted that while the 18-49 race may be tighter this season, CBS should easily lead its target demo of adults (between 25 and 54) and the total viewer count again. They stated: CBS didn’t do anything to its MacGyver/Hawaii Five-0/Blue Bloods lineup, for good reason: It works. Of course, the pediction turned out to be true with CBS winning Friday night in ratings and/or audience numbers over 30 times.

Compared to the 27 scripted shows on CBS during the 2018-2019-Season, the Reboot is at rank 22 in demo and at rank 13 in audience numbers.

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

The other CBS crime-action shows with similar audience numbers as MacGyver have also been renewed. Let’s compare how well they faired:

  • SEAL Team finished Season 2 at 5.027 million live-viewers (Rank 23) and a demo of 0.76 (Rank 19) on average. Compared to last year, they lost about 25% in both demo ratings and audience numbers.
  • SWAT ended their 2nd season at 5.302 million live-viewers (Rank 21) with a demo of 0.78 (Rank 17) per episode. It lost about 17% in demo ratings and about 10% in audience numbers compared to last season.
  • Magnum PI closed their first season at 5.992 million live-viewers per episode (Rank 15) with a 0.89 demo-rating (Rank 8).
  • Bull ended at 6.708 million live-viewers per episode (Rank 11) with a 0.75 demo-rating (Rank 21) . It lost about 37% in both demo ratings and audience numbers, which makes it the CBS shows with the biggest loss this season.

As you can see, the audience numbers for these shows aren’t all that great. To be fair, they do a lot better in DVR and have better demo ratings than MacGyver, but that’s probably not the main reason why out of all these shows, it was MacGyver that had been moved to midseason (more about that further down).

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

There is an interesting snippet in a recent interview Executive Producer Peter Lenkov gave to Matt Carter a day before the Season Finale of Hawaii Five-0:

Matt Carter: I know the show wasn’t renewed until recently, but you probably felt good about coming back at the time the finale was coming together, right?

Peter Lenkov: I always feel good because the show has been strong for a long time, but you never know. Everything changes. Sometimes shows don’t come back for other reasons that have nothing to do with the ratings or the quality.

All you need to know about Season 4
On May 9, CBS finally broke the news that MacGyver has been renewed for another Season. The info for both MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 being renewed came right on Executive Producer Peter Lenkov’s birthday. Understandably, the fans were elated.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

Sadly, the happy parade got ruined not even a week later. On May 15, CBS announced the new Fall Season schedule ahead of the Upfronts presentation – and the Reboot was absent. MacGyver got demoted from a Fall show; being benched to mid-season. Its Friday timeslot will be taken over by Hawaii Five-0, which in turn had to make room for Magnum PI at 9pm.

CBS wasnt’ forthcoming with more information since the Upfronts are all about the Fall schedule. It will probably take months until we get an inkling about the premiere date and until we know for sure in what timeslot the Reboot might end up in.

There’s several possibilities: The Reboot could take over the timeslot of a rookie show that didn’t get a full season order or of a show that ended their last season on a short run, so probably in January 2020. It could take over the timeslot of a show with a full season order of 22 episodes that doesn’t get reruns after the season finale. That would mean we might have to wait until April or even May next year.

Temporary Key Art on social media (via CBS)

Of course, waiting for an entire year for new episodes is kind of torture if you’re a fan. Also, there’s the risk of people forgetting about the show since like last year (and unlike almost all other CBS shows), there’s no reruns planned. (The 8pm Friday timeslot will be filled with “Whistleblower” and “Love Island”.)

But, there’s no point in wasting too much energy on being disappointed or angry. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season:

  • Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) will replace Craig O’Neill as new Co-Showrunner besides Executive Producer Peter Lenkov.
  • As Peter Lenkov stated, they will start filming in July as usual.
  • As Justin Hires revealed, they will film 13 episodes for now. (The order for only half a season was later confirmed by Lenkov.)

There’s no further information yet about the recurring cast or about the exact production dates. Justin Hires recently did a radio interview before one of his stand-up comedy shows and said that they will film from July until December.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

On Monday, they changed the Facebook header on the official account. Nothing dramatic – just exchanging the “Fridays 8/7c” sign with the one for CBS All Access. There’s no key art yet for Season 4 and it might be months until we get to see any. Unlike for the other seasons, they also didn’t provide a new production SAK logo.

(For daily news about Season 4 and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

MacGyver in France and Germany
The ratings have been dropping again after Episode 3×15, but the decline last Saturday could be due to the Eurovision Song Contest airing at the same time.

Even the reruns must draw enough audience since they dedicate overall 4 hours of screentime to the Reboot; filled with either one or two episodes of Season 3, followed by one or two episodes of Season 2 and one episode of Season 1.

Sadly, they didn’t release any Sneak Peeks for Episode 3×09 until 2 hours before the episode aired and no Sneak Peeks for Episode 3×10 at all – contrary to Blue Bloods (2 Sneak Peeks), Hawaii Five-0 (3 Sneak Peeks) or S.W.A.T. (7 Sneak Peeks) last week.

Considering that this was the midseason finale episode and one of the last episodes with George Eads (who is a fan favorite and the second lead actor), you’d think CBS would have promoted the episodes with Sneak Peeks as well. I think it would be worth to show the Jack Dalton fans that George is still on and to ensure they will keep watching once he’s gone; waiting to see if he back in another episode as a guest actor.

Episode 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

For Episode 3×10, Matt Carter released a two-part interview with Meredith Eaton before and after the episode aired (see Part 1 here and Part 2 here). There was an additional interview snippet via TV Insider; warning us that we’ll need tissues. Meredith also had taken over the official CBS Instagram Account; answering fan questions on Live Stories sent in during the week.

Though not adding any Sneak Peeks, CBS at least posted a few new BtS photos. One shows 3 different MacGyvers (Lucas, his Stand-In Matt and thet Stunt Double), another one Reign Edwards while preparing for a fighting scene. Interestingly, both Meredith in her interview and CBS in the BtS photos omitted anything related to George Eads; as if he’s already a persona non grata.

As always, Technical Advisor Rhett Allain uploaded blog posts about the MacHacks in these episodes – e.g. about a Glycerol Lock Hack or about the Air Wedge in Episode 3×09 or about the Cricket Ball Flash Bang or the Water Cooler Bomb in Episode 3×10, providing some videos as well.

BtS photo of Episode 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To recap: Episode 3×08 (Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome) on November 16 got 6.203 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7, beating Last Man Standing in audience numbers. Including the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.60 million viewers (+26%), reaching a total of 7.805 million viewers and a demo of 1.05 (+52%).

Episode 3×09 (Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak) had aired on November 30. It got 6.276 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.7. It added 1.49 million viewers (+24%) in the +7 Days ratings, reaching a total of 7.772 million viewers and a demo of 1.07 (+47%).

Episode 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Episode 3×10 (Matty + Ethan + Fidelity) on December 7 had an audience of 6.359 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7, again beating Last Man Standing in audience numbers. So far, it added 1.32 million viewers (+21%) in the +3 Days ratings, reaching a total of 7.687 million viewers and a demo of 1.01 (+41%).

About the Season 3 Ratings
We’ve already reached Christmas Hiatus for most CBS shows. At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.089 millions live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.71. For Season 2, Episodes 12, 13 and 14 (all airing in January) have been the episodes with the highest audience numbers. We have yet to see if George Eads exiting the show will affect the ratings; meaning they’ll drop instead of rising further before the usual drop when we’re nearing Summer temperatures. It’s a possibility, but shouldn’t hinder the Reboot to get a 4th season to reach syndication.

BtS photo of MacGyver Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Compared to all CBS scripted shows this Fall TV Season, the Reboot is still at rank 19 (of 20) in demo and at rank 14 (of 20) in audience. Let’s take a look at some other CBS crime shows in the same ratings range, now that all have aired 10 episodes so far since their Fall Premiere: Showrunner Peter Lenkov’s rookie show Magnum PI is at 5.887 million live-viewers per episode with a 0.86 demo-rating on average. SEAL Team is at 5.516 millions / 0.85 in demo on average and SWAT at 5.216 / 0.74.

What you need to know about Episode 3×11
Episode 3×11 will air on January 4. It’s titled “Mac + Fallout + Jack “, written by Jim Adler and directed by Carlos Bernard (who also directed Episode 2×11: Bullet + Pen). Here’s the Synopsis:

Mac and Jack hit the road for a weekend of relaxation in Las Vegas, but their mini-vacation is cut short when someone from their past abducts them and locks them in a concrete room. Also, Matty tasks Riley, Bozer and Leanna with stealing a diamond encoded with terrorist intel from a princess in Milan.

The episode has a guest appearance by Shani Atias as princess Zahra. She continues to post BtS photos every now and then.

Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Peter Lenkov)

Erik Kerr posted a BtS photo of the prop rockets. Besides the editing photo by Lenkov a while ago, we don’t have much visual material of the A storyline with Mac and Jack yet.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×12 to 3×16
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes and especially of the airdates since they’ve been scheduling them so much around. So let’s do a short recap of all the information we have so far for the next episodes:

  • 3×12: tba (January 11)
Directed by Ron Underwood. Guest appearance by Bridget Regan.
  • 3×13: tba (January 18)
Directed by Brad Turner. Guest appearances by Vanessa Garcia and Justin Welborn.
  • 3×14: Father + Bride + Betrayal (February 1)
Directed by Avi Youabian.  Guest appearance by Roberto Sanchez.
  • 3×15: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (February 15)
Directed by Gabriel Beristain. Guest appearances by Presilah Nunez and dog Seven.
  • 3×16: tba (February 22)

Sadly, it looks like the two initially planned reruns over Christmas hiatus have been scrapped. At least the fans don’t have to wait too long for the show to come back.

Working on Episodes 3×14 and 3×15
On November 28, production started on Episode 3×14. For several days, they filmed at a wedding location with the team all dressed up. Roberto Sanchez posted several photos from set; mostly while wearing a tux. He also revealed the episode title: “Father + Bride + Betrayal”.

Justin Hires posted several videos (e.g. with George Eads), but also some BtS photos (e.g. with Meredith Eaton or with George Eads, pitching a “Men in Black” Reboot). Director Avi Youabian posted a few Live Stories on Instagram. It seems that the entire episode is set on this location and the woods surrounding it.

Cast and Crew still mostly post temporary videos without revealing too much, though some crew members (e.g. Easton Harper) were nice enough to post a photo every now and then.

BtS photo of MacGyver Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

While the cast was still busy filming for 3×14, Gabriel Beristain was prepping for directing Episode 3×15. Filming for the episode titled “K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit” started on Monday. They had a real dog on set, but the crew mostly posted about the stuffed Stand-In; carrying it around and cradling it. Seems it’s their favorite Stand-In to work with.

On Wednesday, they started production early; setting up two big green screens and lighting some fire while filming between shipping containers and in the woods. Today, they escaped the rain; filming inside a mansion, including dog Seven. Lucas Till posted a photo of him and his brother Nick; recreating a similar photo from filming X-Men: First Class. Justin Hires uploaded another new BtS photo today, making all the fans happy that have been waiting for MacGyver’s brown leather jacket to make a comeback.

ICYMI: About George Eads leaving the Reboot
News about George Eads leaving the show hit on November 26. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to announce Eads’ exit; followed by various articles by other TV news outlets like TV Line or SpoilerTV. The news flooded Twitter and other social media for days.

For now, we don’t know for sure how or when the character of Jack Dalton will be written out. He was on set of Episode 3×14, but the BtS photos and videos didn’t reveal anything about the character’s fate. Deadline has some more information:

While Eads has been released from his series regular contract and his character Jack Dalton is being written out, I hear he is not being killed off, with the door left open for Eads to possibly return as a guest star.

If Episode 3×14 is indeed George’s last episode, you will have to tune in on February 1st to catch it. As Peter Lenkov revealed in an Instagram Live Story, he will visit the set on Monday. It’s not clear if this is one of the regular visits (he was just in Hawaii for Magnum and Hawaii Five-0 this week) or if it’s a special occasion regarding George’s exit.

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards has been back on set this week as Bozer’s girlfriend Leanna. Since IMDb isn’t up to date, it’s difficult to find out about guest stars. Anthony Dilio revealed he’s got a part in the show, but we don’t know yet in what episode or in what capacity.

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Photo Doubles and Stand-Ins (e.g. for Presilah Nunez, Levy Tran or Ryan Czerwonko, for a female Stand-In with red hair and for a kid actor). Fun Fact: Even dogs have a Stand-In on set – only of the stuffed, plushy kind. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for Masked Men, for Wedding Guests, a Photographer, Servers, a group of Smugglers and for Techs and Agents.

BtS photo of MacGyver Season 3 (via Andrew Moore)

Other MacGyver-related News
George Satsidis added an excerpt of his recent interview with Lucas Till. Lucas talks about MacGyver being a dream role and how he filmed the “drone stunt” (we’ve just seen last Friday in Episode 3×10).

Reminder: The Reboot is still eligible for the “Best of TV Awards” held by Canada Graphs. At the moment, you can vote in the following categories:

  • Best Guest Actress (added by fans: Amy Smart)
  • Best Guest Actor (added by fans: Michael Des Barres)
  • Best Recurring Actress
  • Best Recurring Actor (already on the list: Tate Donovan)

In the first round, you can still vote as many times as you want and choose as many boxes to tick as you want. If the show is not available to choose from the list, you can add it into the “other” box (they will be added at the bottom of the list as soon as several votes have come in – usually takes a day or two).

BtS photo of MacGyver Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Every Episode aired in 2018 is eligible, that means every guest actor/actress or recurring actor/actress starting with Episode 2×12; for example Kate Bond (Jill) and David Dastmalchian (Murdoc).

There will be several rounds with new categories added over time, so check in regularly.

MacGyver Reboot Update #71

For tonight’s Episode 3×09, we will get some more quality time with Mac and Jack. Enjoy it while it lasts: It’s been confirmed that George Eads will leave the show this season.

Episode 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episode 3×08
Shortly before the episode aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episode back in September and October; e.g. Emerson Brooks of Charlie having a rough day. Costume Designer Sarah Downer uploaded photos of Tristin Mays and Meredith Eaton all dolled up and of Lucas Till in a tux.

Technical Advisor Rhett Allain wrote a blog post about the MacHacks again – e.g. about Methanol Fire or about the Comeback Can, providing some videos to enjoy as well.

Episode 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To recap: Episode 3×07 (Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly) premiered on November 9 and reached 6.429 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. It had the same demo-rating as Hawaii Five-0 and beat Last Man Standing in audience numbers, winning the 8pm time-slot. So far, this episode has the highest live-audience number this season and a seven-month-high in total viewers. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.503 million viewers (+23%), reaching a total of 7.936 million viewers and a demo of 1.05 (+49%) when including DVR.

Episode 3×08 (Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome) on November 16 got 6.203 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. Again, it beat Last Man Standing in audience numbers and won the 8pm time-slot. Including the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.60 million viewers (+26%), reaching a total of 7.805 million viewers and a demo of 1.05 (+52%).

About the Season 3 Ratings
At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.032 millions live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.71.

Because of Thanksgiving break, many shows have been on hold or aired reruns. So the numbers didn’t change much, and when comparing to all CBS scripted shows this Fall TV Season, the Reboot is still at rank 19 (of 20) in demo and at rank 14 (of 20) in audience. Most prediction sites have the show as “likely to be renewed” or “sure to be renewed” – mainly because it needs another season to reach the 88 episodes in total that is warranted for syndication.

Of course, with Criminal Minds not getting a back-order and inofficially being cancelled, the Reboot just lost another competitor similar in demo rating. Also, we have to see if George Eads exiting the show (see further below for more info) will affects the ratings. Generally, lower ratings will make it harder to get a valuable syndication deal that ensures CBS in its decision to renew it.

What you need to know about Episode 3×09
The episode airing tonight is titled “Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak”, written by Lindsey Allen and directed by Michael Martinez (who also directed Episode 2×14: Mardi Gras Beads + Chair). In case you missed the Synopsis:

When a vial containing a deadly virus is stolen from the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, MacGvyer and team race to recover it before the thief unleashes a global pandemic.

The episode has a guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton), so we might get conclusion about Billy’s job offer to Riley come work with the Coltons and/or about their relationship. It also marks the temporarily return of Reign Edwards (as Leanna), so there might be some insight to her relationship with Bozer as well. It’s possible that one of those relationships will end tonight.

Episode 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

On November 11, CBS released 11 Official Stills. Most of them show Mac and Jack sitting in a cage. Looks like a fun Opening Gambit before the episode will tackle darker undertones with the main mission and the potential relationship drama surrounding Riley and Bozer. On November 21, the fans got a nice surprise when CBS already released the preview as an early Thanksgiving gift.

Sadly, they didn’t release any Sneak Peeks yet. From BtS photos, we know that Bozer will join Mac and Jack on the main mission to contain the virus. Considering that George Eads is leaving soon, you’d think CBS would promote the episode to show the Jack Dalton fans that George is still on and to ensure they will keep watching once he’s gone.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×10 to 3×15
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the information we have so far for the next episodes:

  • 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (December 7)
Written by Andrew Karlsruher and directed by David Straiton. Guest appearance by Brendan Hines as Ethan Reigns, Matty’s husband. You can find the Press Release and the Official Stills here. Peter Lenkov added a little snippet from a TV magazine that reveals a bit more about the episode.
  • 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (January 11, 2019)
Directed by Carlos Bernard. Guest appearances by Shani Atias, Doug Savant and Seamus Patrick Dever. Peter Lenkov posted a shot taken while editing, featuring Mac and Jack in suits.
  • 3×12: tba (January 18)
Directed by Ron Underwood. Guest appearance by Bridget Regan.
  • 3×13: tba (February 1)
Directed by Brad Turner. Guest appearances by Vanessa Garcia and Justin Welborn.
  • 3×14: tba (February 15)
    Guest appearance by Roberto Sanchez.
  • 3×15 tba (February 22)

Episode 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

The originally planned Midseason Finale Episode 3×11 will air on January 11. In between, there will be two reruns; airing on December 28 and January 4. The little breaks in January and February are probably happening due to Celebrity Big Brother – but fans should consider themselves lucky because SEAL Team is being shelved by CBS for 3 months after their Midseason Finale (in favor of Amazing Race).

Working on Episodes 3×12, 3×13 and 3×14
On November 6, production started on Episode 3×12. They filmed some car scenes with Tristin driving and several days in a building dressed to be located in Russia. They also had two kid actors on set for this episode. Izabella Dzmitryieu and Samuel Moody plus their agencies posted some nice photos with the cast.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Samuel Moody)

Despite freezing temperatures, they started filming in the woods and around some sort of rock-climbing area for Episode 3×13 on November 15. Tristin Mays played with Spiders while Justin Hires was confronted with a frozen left butt cheek. They had some sunny days later on, thankfully. As Justin revealed, the episode is directed by Brad Turner.

Again, there weren’t many BtS photos being uploaded in recent weeks. Cast and Crew mainly relied on temporary videos without revealing too much, which makes it incredibly difficult to even guess what the storyline could be about.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

We did get a handful of nice photos, though. After more than a month of staying quiet, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov finally uploaded another BtS photo out of the editing room; featuring Mac and Jack. Justin Hires posted a new photo of the team in Episode 3×10, of him and Tristin Mays in the woods and several BtS photos of himself in Episode 3×11. Lucas Till posted a photo of MacGyver playing with fire.

I’m assuming they started filming for Episode 3×14 this week. They were filming wedding scenes yesterday with Tristin, Justin and Meredith Eaton dressed up – but they also had bad guys and lots of weapons on set.

About George Eads leaving the Reboot
News about George Eads leaving the show hit on November 26. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to announce Eads’ exit; followed by various articles by other TV news outlets like TV Line or SpoilerTV. The news flooded Twitter and other social media for two days; also making waves in Europe (particularly in France, but also in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany).

Fans had been speculating for a while if George Eads was set to leave; especially after he had deleted his Instagram account around the same time he was last seen on set in mid-October. The last BtS photo of George I have in my stash is a photo posted by Carlos Bernard (director of Episode 3×11), uploaded on October 31.

Episode 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

For now, we don’t know for sure how or when the character of Jack Dalton will be written out. As ET Online stated on Monday, Eads was currently on set filming his last episode, which would be either Episode 3×13 or 3×14. Deadline seems to have more information:

While Eads has been released from his series regular contract and his character Jack Dalton is being written out, I hear he is not being killed off, with the door left open for Eads to possibly return as a guest star.

Some people took the opportunity to post old BtS photos with George; inofficially applying to take over for the role of Jack Dalton.

BtS photo of Episode 1×05: Toothpick (via Adam Clements)

Fans are mourning, especially because it doesn’t seem like Jack Dalton can be written out in a way that does the character justice. Some already started writing fanfictions how they would have written him out if they had any say in it. Others started suggesting which guest stars could be hired to help MacGyver on missions and ease some of Lucas Till’s work load. The ideas are very veried; from Isabel Lucas’ character of Samantha Cage to Diogo Morgado, Mac’s friend in Puerto Rico we got to meet in Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water).

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
So far, Reign Edwards hasn’t been on set since November 4 for Episode 3×11. I’m not sure if and when she will be back or if her project that she filmed a pilot for in New Zealand got picked up. Interestingly, she’s been wearing her hair curly in the last few days – the same way she had it styled for that pilot.

So at the moment, it doesn’t look like Leanna will take over for Jack. It is kinda ironic that both female field agents that were set up to take some workload off George Eads didn’t work out in the end.

Episode 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Photo Doubles and Stand-Ins (e.g. for Roberto Sanchez). They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for a Real Photographer, a Real Videographer, for Formal Guests to portray Hispanic looks, a Hispanic female Kid (age 6-8 years) and a Priest. Doesn’t that sound like an upcoming wedding scene to you?

My assumption was confirmed with them explicitly looking for Wedding Guests, Wedding Servers and a Wedding Bartender as well. The filming for these scenes will continue next week. Though with the casting calls for Masked Men and Tough Bad Guys, that could mean the wedding will get crashed…

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it: ET Canada finally released their video-interview with Lucas (probably done back in September). He talks about doing stunts and what’s in store for his character this season.

It’s not any prestigious contest, but the Reboot is still eligible for the “Best of TV Awards” held by Canada Graphs. At the moment, you can vote for MacGyver in the following categories:

  • Best Stunts
  • Best Youth Actor/Actress
  • Best Couple
  • Best Director

For now, you can still vote as many times as you want and choose as many boxes to tick as you want. If the show is not available to choose from the list, you can add it into the “other” box (they will be added at the bottom of the list as soon as several votes have come in – usually takes a day or two).

There will be several rounds with new categories added over time, so check in regularly.

MacGyver Reboot Update #70

Cast and Crew are battling harsh conditions this week while filming outside. For tonight’s Episode 3×08, they got to dress up for a Gala Dinner that’s taking place in a warm and comfy ball room, at least.

Episode 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×06 and 3×07
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in September; e.g. David Dastmalchian for Episode 3×06 (with Lucas Till), Sibongile Mlambo for 3×06 (with David Dastmalchian) or Jimmy Akingbola for 3×07 (with Justin Hires, with Tristin Mays and with Joy Sunday).

Since Episode 3×03, CBS hadn’t released any Sneak Peeks. Fans felt cheated on, especially because Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods got several Sneak Peeks for every episode. So it was a nice surprise when for Episode 3×07, they released 3 Sneak Peeks on November 8.

BtS photo of Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (via David Dastmalchian)

Technical Advisor Rhett Allain added blog posts about the MacHacks again – e.g. about the use of muriatic acid to eat through cement in Episode 3×06 or about the Microwave Gun in 3×07. He was also interviewed for a CBS news channel segment. (Funny note: He’s never met the cast or the crew. CBS should invite this man to visit the set soon!)

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To recap:  With the World Series being on at the same time, the demo-rating for Episode 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family) dropped to a 0.6. It still managed a live-viewers audience of 5.894 millions. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.66 million viewers (+28%), reaching a total of 7.553 million viewers and a demo of 1.01 (+58%) when including the DVR numbers.

Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Episode 3×06 (Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc) made 6.063 milllion live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.8 in the important demo-group of 18-49-year-olds. This episode has the second-highest audience number and the highest (un-rounded) demo of Season 3 so far. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.41 million viewers (+23%), reaching a total of 7.475 million viewers and a demo of 1.09 (+40%) when including DVR.

Episode 3×07 (Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly) reached 6.429 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. It had the same demo-rating as Hawaii Five-0, but more interestingly, it beat Last Man Standing in audience numbers, winning the 8pm time-slot. So far, this episode has the highest audience number this season.

Episode 3×07: Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

About the Season 3 Ratings
At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.008 millions live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.71.

For comparison with other CBS crime shows in the same range: Peter Lenkov’s rookie show Magnum PI is at 6.001 millions / 0.88 demo (Monday) after airing 7 episodes so far, despite getting a lot more promo than other CBS shows. It just got an extra premiere-slot on Sunday, January 20 – directly after the AFC Championship Game. This could work in their favor; affecting the episode averages for the season. SEAL Team is on average at 5.34 million live-viewers / 0.83 in demo (Wednesday, 7 episodes) and SWAT at 5.22 / 0.71 (Thursday, 7 episodes).

When comparing to all CBS scripted shows this Fall TV Season, the Reboot is at rank 19 (of 20) in demo and at rank 14 (of 20) in audience. While that doesn’t read so great, all prediction sites have the show predicted as “likely to be renewed” or “sure to be renewed”. Its famous brand name with franchise and syndication potential sure makes it a likely candidate to get another season.

Episode 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

What you need to know about Episode 3×08
The episode airing tonight is titled “Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome”, written by Brian Durkin and directed by Lily Mariye. In case you missed the Synopsis:

MacGyver and the team set off on a dangerous capture operation after an Irish military intelligence officer approaches them claiming to know the whereabouts of “The Ghost,” a lethal bomb maker whom Mac has been hunting for years.

The episode has guest appearances by Holland Roden, Emerson Brooks (as Charlie Robinson) and Sean C. Michael (as the Ghost). It looks like George Eads might be absent in this episode since I haven’t seen him in any of the BtS or promo material.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

On November 8, they released 13 Official Stills. Most pf them show Team Phoenix (sans Jack and Leanna) at a Gala Dinner, all dolled up and/or in sharp suits. They also released 2 Sneak Peeks yesterday. The first one has Mac and Riley talking about Nasha before Mac meets Holland Rodan’s character Eileen at a veteran gala. The second one has Mac, Riley, Bozer plus Charlie and Eileen out in the field with Matty assisting in the War Room back at Phoenix.

Emerson Brooks uploaded a BtS photo showing Charlie on a stretcher; confirming that the episode will take place in Paris. Executive Producer and Showrunner Peter Lenkov remains quiet. In fact, besides a re-post of Lucas Till, he still hasn’t posted anything MacGyver-related on Instagram since October 5.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×09 to 3×12
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (November 30)
Directed by Michael Martinez. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton) and return of Reign Edwards (as Leanna). Check out the Press Release and the Official Stills here.
  • 3×10: Matty + Ethan + Fidelity (December 7)
Partially filmed in a prison location. Otherwise still top secret, apparently.
  • 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (tbd)
Directed by Carlos Bernard. Guest appearances by Shani Atias, Doug Savant and Seamus Patrick Dever.
  • 3×12: tba (tbd)
    Guest appearance by Bridget Regan.

There’s no episode on November 23, but we’ll get a rerun on December 28. Episode 3×11 – which was originally planned as the Christmas Episode being the Midseason-Finale – will presumably air in January.

BtS photo of Episode 3×11: Mac + Fallout + Jack (via Carlos Bernard)

Working on Episodes 3×11 and 3×12
Again, there weren’t many BtS photos being uploaded in recent weeks. Cast and Crew still mainly rely on temporary videos now without revealing too much, which makes it incredibly difficult to even guess what the storyline could be about. Luckily, every now and then, someone feels like teasing the fans a bit. They filmed a car crash and another ballroom gala scene. Shani Atias had uploaded quite a few BtS photos and Insta Stories. Director Carlos Bernard uploaded a nice team photo while taking a break after filming in the War Room.

On November 6, production started on Episode 2×12. They filmed some car scenes with Tristin driving, in a hangar (and possibly inside an airplane) and several days in a building dressed to be located in Russia – while also working on a set that looks like Fort Knox. This week, the constant and cold rain led do some re-scheduling so they could film inside instead. They also had some kid actors on set during the last few days: Izabella Dzmitryieu and Samuel Moody posted some nice photos with the cast.

The weather didn’t change for the better though – so yesterday, they had to film in the woods; despite freezing temperatures, wind and rain. Even the cameras got to wear a raincoat. Today, they were lucky with blue skies and the sun peeking through the foliage every now and then.

It’s possible they’re already working on Episode 3×13. My count might be a day or two off – but according to my files, they reached Day 100 of filming for Season 3.

Today, ET Canada finally released their video-interview with Lucas (probably done back in September of Season 3). He talks about doing stunts and what’s in store for his character this season (sadly, it’s not really a surprise anymore since we’re already seven episodes in).

Erik Kerr uploaded several videos of different episodes, e.g. of filming the attack on the truck with Riley driving (in Episode 3×04) or the fighting scene between Amber and Murdoc in Episode 3×06. (Funny note: The Stunt Double for Sarah Sokolovic was Kandis Hargrave, wife of Stunt Coordinator Daniel Hargrave. Between takes, she was nursing their son.)

Cast, Crew and Character News
Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Greg Corbett, Faran Tahir, David Chin and Alex Livinalli. Additionally, they had Casting Calls for Photo Doubles, a Hand Double for Meredith Eaton and for a Stand-In with red hair.

They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for African American Techs and Agents, for Bad Guys, for Russian Guards and Russian Security, Tactical Men, Gala Guests, Russian Police, Russian Valets, Upscale Cars, Police, Male Fit Models, for Pedestrians with Cars, a Featured Pilot and Tactical Teams.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it: Season 1 of Original MacGyver was released on BluRay on October 30. Might be a nice Christmas gift *wink*. There’s no information yet about a possible release date for Season 2.

It’s not any prestigious contest, but the Reboot is eligible for the “Best of TV Awards” held by Canada Graphs. At the moment, you can vote for MacGyver in the category “Best TV Show” and for the characters in the category “Favorite TV Character” plus for the category “Best Non-Human Character or Prop” (I’ll say the robot or the SAK are the most likely candidates here).

For now, you can vote as many times as you want. The show is not available to choose from the list, but you can add it into the “other” box. So add your favorites in there and vote as many times as you want as long as the categories stay open. If it’s like last year, there will be several rounds with new categories added over time.

MacGyver Reboot Update #69

Murdoc is back in tonight’s Episode 3×06. We also got a glimpse at Episode 3×07 and apparently, there were MacGyver cookies on set!

About Episodes 3×04 and 3×05
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in August; e.g. Tiffany Denise Hobbs (for 3×04) or Adela Tirado and Tucker Meek (both for 3×05). Matthew Albright posted a few BtS photos of the stunt scene on the truck of Episode 3×04.

BtS photo of Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (via Matthew Albright)

For both episodes, CBS didn’t release any Sneak Peeks. Fans felt cheated on, especially because Hawaii Five-0 got 4 Sneak Peeks for Episode 9×04 two weeks ago and 3 in total for 9×05 last week while Blue Bloods got 3 clips for each episode. Also, they took their sweet time to upload the clips from Episode 3×05 onto YouTube. Usually, they’re up just after the episode aired. This time, we had to wait until Tuesday.

To recap:  Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) had garned an audience of 6.155 milllion live-viewers and a demo of 0.8. In the +7 Days ratings, it added another 1.537 million viewers (+25%), reaching a total of 7.696 million viewers when including DVR.

Episode 3×04 (Guts + Fuel + Hope) reached 6.008 million live-viewers and a demo 0.7 in the demo-group of 18-49-year-olds, so losing a bit in both audience and demo when compared to Episode 3×03. In the +7 Days ratings, it added 1.571 million viewers (+26%), reaching a total of 7.583 million viewers and a demo of 1.07 (+55%) when including DVR.

Episode 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family) had tough competition; the World Series being on at the same time. While the demo-rating dropped to a 0.6, it still managed a live-viewers audience of 5.894 millions. In the +3 Days ratings, it added 1.26 million viewers (+21%), reaching a total of 7.157 million viewers and a demo of 0.94 (+47%) when including the DVR numbers available so far.

While the demo ratings aren’t as good as CBS likes them, the Reboot still holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas; especially in audience numbers. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 6.21 millions / 0.92 demo (Monday) after airing six episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.32 / 0.82 (Wednesday, 5 episodes) and SWAT at 5.23 / 0.72 (Thursday, 5 episodes).

What you need to know about Episode 3×06
The episode airing tonight is titled “Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc”, directed by Stephen Herek.

Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

In case you missed the Synopsis:

Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) abducts MacGyver’s girlfriend, Nasha (Sibongile Mlambo), to force Mac to help him rescue his son, Cassian (Brady Bond), from a kidnapper. Also, a dangerous individual from Murdoc’s personal life shows up, giving Mac a glimpse into the villain’s past

They released 13 Official Stills in total – all of them featuring MacGyver, Murdoc, Cassian and Sarah Sokolovic as Amber. Yesterday, David Dastmalchian tweeted a funny GIF of Murdoc pushing MacGyver on an office chair.

Again, no special promo by CBS as I’m typing up this blog post – contrary to Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 that both got Sneak Peeks yesterday; H50 another exclusive clip via TV Line today. So far, Executive Producer and Showrunner Peter Lenkov stayed quiet as well. In fact, besides a re-post of Lucas Till, he hasn’t posted anything MacGyver-related on Instagram since October 5.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×07 to 3×11

As predicted, there’s no episode on November 23 due to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. They will air Holiday Specials at 8pm, followed by an episode of Magnum and a rerun of Hawaii Five-0. Initially, they have planned to air MacGyver reruns (we don’t know yet which episodes) on December 21 and 28. At the moment, the rerun on December 21 has been scrapped, along with the episode premiere on December 14. This means that Episode 3×11 – which was planned as the Christmas Episode being the Mid-season-Finale – will probably air AFTER Christmas (unless they can swap two episodes).

The episode title (Mac + Fallout + Jack) – revealed by Justin Hires – sure sounds ominous. I smell a cliffhanger-y plot twist. Fans might not mind that they don’t have to wait after a cliffhanger, but it will be a bit unusual to see a Christmas Episode in January. (It’s worth noting that the premiere for H50 has been scrapped as well while they got to keep the rerun on December 21.)

Working on Episodes 3×10 and 3×11
Again, there were almost no BtS photos being uploaded in recent weeks. Cast and Crew rely mainly on temporary videos now – but every now and then, someone feels like teasing the fans a bit.

In recent weeks, they filmed an upscale event at a mansion and put Lucas Till in a Hazmat Suit. They also filmed in and around a pretty creepy prison set and decorated several streets to look like Christmas time; presumably for filming the Midseason Finale Episode.

As Meredith Eaton revealed, Matty is taking out the big guns now. It’s not clear yet if she just wanted a photo of a prop gun or if Matty will be part of a storyline involving handling deadly weapons. She looks a lot more friendly on the photo with Tristin Mays. Bozer will be wearing a tux again in an upcoming episode and seems to have taken part in a “planking competition“.

On October 26, Lucas Till uploaded a short story that has him looking as if MacGyver did get into a fist fight again. According to Steven Serna, they had filmed a car crash scene that day, so maybe Mac had been involved in that – it would fit the Instagram Story that Lucas had uploaded on Halloween; showing him with bruises while sitting in the car. There are (fake) glass splinters on his clothes and in the reflection, it looks like the side-window is smashed.

The 2nd unit had to work on Saturday last week, while it seemed like the main cast had the day off.

On October 30, the crew did the “dress like a co-worker” day again before fully embracing Halloween and showing up again in costume on the next day. They filmed some sort of ballroom gala scene where Meredith Eaton got to dress up while Reign Edwards, Tristin Mays and Justin Hires were delegated to staff; serving food and drinks.

Tristin and Reign later donned little black dresses while Justin looked like he was playing a designer. We can assume this will be another undercover mission. Interestingly, there were no sightings of Lucas Till or George Eads in the last 2 days.

While having a grueling schedule, they also get nice surprises every now and then. As Lucas Till revealed, one of the owners of a house location invited Cast and Crew to taste MacGyver cookies.

Cast, Crew and Character News
A photo by Carlos Bernard, director of Episode 3×11, revealed Doug Savant and Seamus Patrick Dever as guest-stars. Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Jimmy Gonzalez, for Shani Atias and for Sarah Al-Sherri.

Additionally, they had Casting Calls for Photo Doubles and for Small European Cars. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for a Hispanic Priest, for Inmates, for male actors for a Make-Up-Test, a female Nurse, a male Tech, for Market and Café Patrons, a Ghana Guard, an Asian Guard, for more guards, a Middle Eastern male actor for a Photo Shoot, a man with lots of tattoos and for women for a Beatiful Entourage.
