About the Season 6 Storylines (encore)
ICYMI: Before the Season 5 Finale on April 30, Matt Mitovich had released an interview with Showrunner Monica Macer for TV Line; talking about tweaking the finale a bit and teasing the fans that some of the nanobots might have “survived”. She also adressed potential storylines for Season 6 if the show hadn’t been cancelled – e.g. the future of Mac and Desi, Desi and her “lost” fiancé, the “hero couple” and the fun of Mac, Russ and Bozer on a treasure hunt.

A few days later, TV Line added an article revealing that Season 6 would have delivered a baby. On May 15, Mitovich posted yet another article; this time elaborating on what would have led to the first kiss between Mac and Riley.

Some fans were disappointed about these storylines; stating that they didn’t want another season in that case. If you’re one of these fans, remember that these are only ideas; not approved by the network yet.

Even if a show gets renewed, it could take months or even years until it’s going into production. It could be shipped to another network, for example. Also, the two OG MacGyver movies didn’t have any ties to the OG show storyline in the Season Finale.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (via Monica Macer)

Even if the show would stay on CBS, there’s no guarantee Season 6 would still have Macer as showrunner or the same writers who worked on Season 5. Some of the cast might be unavailable for filming. They might have a smaller budget; not bringing back all of the regular actors. They could do a spin-off instead of a continuation.

It’s still worth fighting for a renewal because anything can happen. And isn’t a movie or a handful of episodes for a webseries better than nothing? Lucas went through hell and fought so hard to get the cast and crew justice. Shouldn’t we at least try to give him a chance of playing the character again; no matter the storylines?

What’s going to happen now?
On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall Season schedule. There’s no premiere dates yet, but our favorite slot goes to SWAT for a handful of episodes. Around midseason, SWAT will move to Sundays 10pm to replace SEAL Team, which was renewed and will premiere in Fall as well, but will be moved to Paramount+ midseason to gather new subscribers.

A bit confusing? It is. For now, CBS hasn’t announced yet which unscripted / reality show will take over the Friday 8pm slot once SWAT has been moved. I can’t imagine it does Magnum PI any favors, though.

International Season 5 Finale Promo (via AXN Asia)

Starting tonight, CBS will air two reruns of Magnum PI on Fridays 8pm before going back to one rerun at 8pm so they have room for reality show Love Island at 9pm. Usually, they put reruns of an existing show to their new slot during hiatus, but maybe CBS has other plans for SWAT in late Summer.

For now, SWAT has two reruns on Wednesdays. Considering that CBS still has reruns of cancelled shows Mom and NCIS: New Orleans on the schedule while still not having set a release date for Summer Show Blood + Treasure, it seems like they’re a bit short on Summer hiatus material after cancelling 3 drama shows in total.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
Here’s an update for the achievements of the #SaveMacGyver Movement during the last two weeks:

  • The petition to renew the show for another season hit the mark of 27’000 signatures on May 7. It lost about 3000 signatures (due to the website removing signatures without verified email address). It’s currently back at about 26’800 signatures as I’m writing this post.
  • A big package of 1 million paperclips have been sent to CBS Studios recently; meaning that fans sent so far about 1.45 million paperclips.
  • Fans keep sending e-mails and writing letters to CBS executives and calling the CBS offices; also contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series. So far, about 260’000 requests have been made to Netflix.
  • The GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (especially billboards, paperclips or press kits) is still up; standing at almost 9800 USD.
  • The 5 digital billboards in Los Angeles, New York (Time Square), Phoenix and Atlanta were up until end of May. There might be more coming soon.
  • The GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research is still up; standing at 1900 USD.

The official website gets updated regularly; so check here to keep up with news and learning about the movement and how to help.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
Lucas Till’s movie “Son of the South” premiered in Australia and New Zealand on May 20. There was quite a bit of promo surrounding it, but mostly with Bob Zellner. While cinemas are opening again around the world, the movie might get some more theatrical release dates before the blockbusters will fill up the schedule. In Spain, it already premiered on TV.

As Variety reported on May 28, Lucas got cast in “The Spook Who Sat by The Door” Pilot at FX; playing CIA Agent Graham Renfroe. They started filming on May 24. While I have seen some posts about a hotel set, nice cars and night shoots, there were no BtS photos of the main cast yet.

While some fans might be discouraged about Lucas not being available for MacGyver anymore, you need to remember that it’s just a pilot for now. His character might have limited screentime, or it’s a recurring role for a handful of episodes only. The show might not get picked up to series or his character will be dropped. Remember the Unaired MacGyver Pilot that lost the entire cast besides the two leads after being ordered to series?

In any case, Lucas needs to keep his face on screens while he’s in demand and people remember him. He needs to connect with new directors, producers and actors not associated with CBS. Also, he’s way too talented to sit at home while waiting for CBS to do the right thing.

As stated above, anything can happen. It might take months or even years for MacGyver to continue. It’s worth noting that CBS show Criminal Minds got their revival a year after cancellation. And Original CSI will be continued as CSI: Vegas this Fall (with several of the original actors) 6 years after its Series Finale.

While Justin Hires has been back doing comedy shows and releasing new music, we don’t know much about what the others have been up to regarding work. Tristin Mays updated her IMDb page with more photos, but has no new project listed yet. Henry Ian Cusick is currently attached to several movies. Levy Tran has been working on her martial arts skills.

The Season 4 DVD
In the US, the release date for the Season 4 DVD has been set for June 8. Critical Blast confirmed on Twitter that there are no Extras on the US-version. They were nice enough to add a photo of the back cover; adding confirmation that no love was put into the DVD design, either.

I feel that the back cover “art” has gotten worse with every new season. Considering that almost every CBS Fall show got their former season DVD released before the new season premiered, I’m not sure why it took them so long to put this simple DVD box together.

Season 4 DVD Cover for Australia (via JB Hifi)

There’s additional release dates for countries outside the US; e.g. July 7 in Australia, August 4 in Japan and August 19 in German-speaking countries. So far, there’s no information about potential Bonus Features on international DVD versions; but let’s hope for the best.

Other MacGyver-related News
Costume Designer Sarah Downer has uploaded several BtS photos taken during costume fittings; e.g. of Henry Ian Cusick in his kilt (for Episode 5×12), of Tristin Mays (for Episode 3×11), of Lucas Till (for Episode 5×11), of George Eads or of Levy Tran.

Episode 5×12: Royalty + Marriage + Vivaah Sanskar + Zinc + Henna (via Sarah Downer)

Here’s a short overview of MacGyver-related news in recent weeks you might have missed:

  • In Italy, Season 4 premiered on May 27 on Ray4.
  • In the UK, Season 5 premiered on May 30 on Sky One.
  • CBS added face masks as merch items to their MacGyver store. They had 56 items in total before splitting the store into two seperate stores for the OG show (41 items) and the Reboot (15 items).

About the Season 5 Ratings
To recap: Season 4 had an average of 6.081 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.67. Episode 4×08 airing on April 3 had the highest audience number (of 7.073 million life-viewers), Episode 4×07 airing on March 27 had the biggest demo (of 0.80).

On average, every Season 5 episode had an audience of 4.740 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.51. Compared to the other CBS scripted shows in the current TV Season (24 so far), it places Rank 15 in average audience numbers and demo per episode.

Audience Numbers Overview (graph by DashboardOnFire)

Episode 5×04 airing on January 8 had both the highest audience number (of 5.173 million live-viewers) and the highest demo (of 0.59).

Comparing the average ratings to last season, Season 5 lost about 22% in live-audience numbers and about 24% in demo. Comparing the average audience numbers with the other CBS crime/drama shows, only cancelled shows All Rise and NCIS: New Orleans had a bigger loss (minus 26.6% resp. 23.3%).

So when looking at the audience numbers only, the ratings weren’t stellar for CBS. But when comparing demo losses, MacGyver lost less in demo than NCIS, SEAL Team or SWAT (about minus 27%).

On May 7, fans were live-tweeting while having a Watch Party of episodes 3×22 and 4×01. At their peak, there were about 408 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 1044 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. For comparison: #MagnumPI (Season Finale) got 206 estimated tweets per hour, #BlueBloods had 587.

On May 14, there was a Watch Party of episodes 4×02 and 4×03. There were about 261 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 721 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. For comparison: The two-hour Season Finale of #BlueBloods had about 2300 estimated tweets per hour.

About the Season 6 Storylines
Before the Season 5 Finale, Matt Mitovich had interviewed Showrunner Monica Macer for TV Line; talking about potential storylines for Season 6 if the show hadn’t been cancelled. A few days later, TV Line added another article revealing that Season 6 would have delivered a baby.

Juicy reveals bring clicks for websites. On May 15, Mitovich posted yet another article; this time elaborating on what would have led to the first kiss between Mac and Riley.

What’s going to happen now?
Sadly, CBS doesn’t air reruns of cancelled shows, so all the pre-scheduled reruns have been “cancelled” as well. As predicted, the replacements haven’t been doing to well; dragging down the ratings of the Friday line-up.

On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall schedule. Our favorite slot goes to SWAT for a handful of episodes. SWAT will then move to Sundays 10pm to replace SEAL Team, which will be then moved to CBS’ streaming canal Paramount+ (former CBS All Access). Depending on how many reruns they put in between, that might most likely happen for midseason. For now, CBS hasn’t announced yet which unscripted / reality show will take over the Friday 8pm slot.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Jordan Heir)

In my opinion, moving SWAT twice is a weird choice. Whatever will replace SWAT and no matter if SWAT does better than in its previous timeslot, I think the rest of the Friday line-up will suffer in ratings. But a Fall schedule isn’t set in stone. If SWAT does exceptionally well, they might keep it on Fridays 8pm. Or they might decide to pair Magnum PI with NCIS: Hawaii after all.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
Here’s an update for the achievements of the #SaveMacGyver Movement during the last two weeks:

  • The petition to renew the show for another season hit the mark of 27’000 signatures on May 7. It lost about 3000 signatures (due to the website eliminating signatures that hadn’t verified their email address). It’s currently back at about 26’000 signatures as I’m writing this post.

  • Fans keep sending e-mails and writing letters to CBS executives and calling the CBS offices; also contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series.
  • Some more online articles by news outlets have been published; e.g. by Phoenix New Times about the Phoenix billboard.
  • The GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (e.g. billboards, one million paperclips or online ads) is still up; standing at 7750 USD.
  • The 5 digital billboards in Los Angeles, New York (Time Square), Phoenix and Atlanta will stay up until end of May.
  • The GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research is still up; standing at 1770 USD.

The official website is still being updated regularly; so check here to keep up with news and learning about the movment and how to help.

Several cast members of CBS shows have acknowledged the movement on social media; e.g. Eric Christian Olsen (NCIS: LA) or Michael Cudlitz (Clarice); encouraging fans to not give up.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
In recent years, we used to have some events in June to look forward to; e.g. the Corus Entertainment Upfronts in Toronto. The pandemic put a damper on all events last year. In theory, Season 5 would have a chance to be nominated for award shows (e.g. the Teen Choice Awards), but the pandemic might be a hindrance for this year as well.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (video screenshot via Levy Tran)

Henry Ian Cusick has a movie coming out soon; a project he filmed in Hawaii before they started filming for Season 5. Interestingly, former Showrunner Peter Lenkov is attached as producer.

Tate Donovan’s pilot for FOX didn’t get picked up, so James MacGyver would be available for another season (hint, hint).

Other MacGyver-related News
A few weeks ago, CBS added more merch items of the Original Show in their MacGyver store. They have now 52 items in total.

  • The Season 4 DVD release date has been set for June 8. So far, there’s no information about any Bonus Features.
  • There’s no release date yet for the Season 5 DVD.
  • The Reboot was competing in the “Best of TV Awards 2020” held by Canada Graphs. It won Rank 3 in three categories: “Best Action or Drama Actor” (Lucas Till), “Favorite TV Program” and “Best Writing“. Tristin Mays won Rank 1 as “Best Action or Drama Actor Actress“.

About the Premiere of Episode 5×15 (MAC509)
Last week was the premiere of Season 5 Finale Episode 5×15 (Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal), directed by David Straiton. We got 9 Official Stills and 6 Sneak Peeks in total; including two Exclusive Sneak Peeks: One by TV Line (Casino Sting) and one by TV Insider (Recovery Plot).

There was also an interview with Alexandra Grey (Parker) for Forbes. AXN Asia promoted the episode with a post about tried and tested MacHacks.

A few hours in advance, fans were live-tweeting while having a Watch Party of several episodes. At their peak, there were about 319 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 631 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver.

Before and during the episode aired, we got a lot of new/old BtS material; by the main cast (e.g. Meredith Eaton or by Justin Hires), by Showrunner Monica Macer or by the crew (e.g. Tari Segal).

Several of the writers, producers plus cast members Lucas Till and Henry Ian Cusick joined the live-tweeting.

Matt Mitovich had interviewed Showrunner Monica Macer for TV Line; talking about potential storylines for Season 6 if the show hadn’t been cancelled. In an interview with Reel 360, Lucas Till talked about filming during a pandemic and revealed that he had auditioned 4 times for the role.

There were a few more articles later; e.g. by Just Jared or an episode recap by Deadline. On Sunday, TV Line added an article revealing that Season 6 would have delivered a baby. Yesterday, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain posted his blog entry about the MacGyverisms.

To recap: Episode 5×14 two weeks ago got 4.329 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.48. Episode 5×15 had 4.479 live-million viewers with a demo of 0.45.

On average, a Season 5 episode had an audience of 4.740 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.51. Compared to the other CBS scripted shows in the current TV Season (24 so far), it places Rank 15 in average audience numbers per episode and Rank 15 (together with NCIS: New Orleans) in average demo.

What’s going to happen now?
There were some reruns scheduled in the usual time slot before CBS pulled them off the schedule. In non-pandemic years, the MacGyver timeslot was often occupied with a reality show over Summer; but filming for non-scripted shows might still be delayed.

CBS doesn’t air reruns of cancelled shows, so I don’t expect to see them on the schedule again (unless the show gets renewed or revived).

For tonight, they will be airing a repeat of a show that just premiered on Wednesday (just before the Magnum PI Season Finale). Next week will be a Gayle King Special before the 2-hour-long Season Finale of Blue Bloods.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
Here’s an update for the achievements of the #SaveMacGyver Movement:

  • the petition to renew the show for another season hit the mark of 25’000 signatures on May 4; standing at about 26’900 signatures as I’m writing this post
  • more than 360’000 paperclips have been sent to the CBS Studios in LA and NY
  • fans wrote a ton of e-mails and letters to CBS executives and called the CBS offices; also contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series
  • there’s an official website plus an Instagram account
  • several online articles by news outlets; e.g. by ET Canada, Forbes, CNN, or CBS17

  • digital billboards in LA (2), New York (Time Square), Phoenix and Atlanta
  • a GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research

The fans put together a video with messages for the cast and crew and continue to tweet and re-tweet to keep the hashtags alive.

Some cast members of other CBS shows have acknowledged the movement on social media; e.g. Eric Christian Olsen (NCIS: LA) or Michael Cudlitz (Clarice); encouraging fans to not give up.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
Casts and Crew kept posting BtS photos and Goodbye- and Thank-You-Posts on Social Media last week. Some also didn’t hold back on criticism; e.g. Lucas Till’s Stand-In Matthew Albright who revealed that it had been CBS to push for the love triangle and the teenage drama; in his opinion losing viewers in the process and killing the show.

As mentioned last week, Brad William Henke (Jonah Walsh in Episode 2×23) refused to sign the petition; stating that CBS had told him they were going to bring his character back in Season 3 for five episodes – and then nothing happened.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (via Monica Macer)

On April 28, Meredith Eaton did an episode for Justin Hires’ “Urban Legendz Podcast”; available as a Patreon Exclusive. Levy Tran shared a Stunt Reel video of her favorite Stunt Scenes plus a Photo Dump video of all her seasons.

The writers are still active on social media as well. Alessia Costantini teased the fans that they had already decided about what would be MacGyver’s last paperclip art.

About the Rerun of Episode 5×01 (MAC415)
Last week was the rerun of Episode 5×01 (Resort + Desi + Riley + Window Cleaner + Witness). Before the episode aired, we got some new/old BtS material; e.g. by Meredith Eaton.

A few hours in advance, fans were live-tweeting while having a Watch Party of several episodes. At their peak, there were about 349 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 705 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver.

During the rerun, there were about 617 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 1105 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. For comparison: #MagnumPI had about 40 estimated tweets per hour and #BlueBloods about 35.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (video screenshot via Levy Tran)

To recap: The last rerun (Episode 4×11 on February 26) had 3.356 million live-viewers and a demo-rating of 0.34. The rerun of Episode 5×01 got 3.158 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.30.

There are some more reruns scheduled for now, but CBS isn’t known for keeping shows on the rotation when they’re already cancelled. In non-pandemic years, the timeslot was often occupied with a reality show over Summer; but filming for non-scripted shows might still be delayed.

BtS Photo of Season 4 (via Meredith Eaton)

If an already existing show takes over the timeslot in Fall, they might put reruns of that show there. In my opinion, most lower-rated CBS crime/drama shows (e.g. SWAT) aren’t really made for Fridays 8pm or don’t really fit with the current line-up at 9pm and 10pm. It’s possible that they will push Magnum PI to 8pm; serving as a lead-in for a new show (e.g. NCIS: Hawaii). The Fall schedule should be revealed at the Upfronts next May.

What you need to know about Episode 5×15 (MAC509)
Tonight is the premiere of the Season 5 Finale aka Episode 5×15 (Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal). It was written by Monica Macer, Alessia Costantini, Andrew Klein & Stephanie Hicks and directed by David Straiton.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (Nathan Bolster/CBS via TV Insider)

We got the Press Release and 9 Official Stills on April 13 plus a preview after the rerun last Friday. In case you need a refresher (though I doubt it), here’s the synopsis:

When Mac and Riley go missing and wake up 24 hours later in a corn field with no memory of how they got there, they must unravel the mystery to find who took them, and how to get rid of the nanotrackers in their bodies, no matter the cost.

On April 22, they released another Season 5 BtS interview video; this time talking about dire situations. We got 4 Sneak Peeks on Wednesday plus two additional Sneak Peeks yesterday: One by TV Line (Casino Sting) and one by TV Insider (Recovery Plot). According to the band “The Phoenix Foundation”, the episode will feature their song “Eventually”; taken from the album “Buffalo” (2015).

Digital Billboard in Phoenix, Arizona (via Jamie Andrews)

On April 29, we also got a new interview with Alexandra Grey (Parker) for Forbes. Alexandra was surprised by the wide praise she received from fans, but also disappointed about the cancellation since she “heard some stuff for next season”.

Today, Matt Mitovich from TV Line just hinted that fans would want to visit the site after the episode; getting to know more about storylines for Season 6 if the show had been renewed.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
Here’s an update for the achievements of the #SaveMacGyver Movement:

  • a petition to renew the show for another season (reaching the mark of 20’000 signatures on April 25); hitting 22’100 signatures as I’m writing this post
  • more than 360’000 paperclips being sent to the CBS Studios in LA and NY
  • writing a ton of e-mails and letters to CBS executives
  • contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series
  • setting up an official website plus an Instagram account
  • several online articles by news outlets; e.g. by ET Canada, Forbes, CNN, ScreenRant, CBS17 or PopCulture
  • setting up a GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (e.g. billboards, one million paperclips or online ads)
  • buying digital billboards in LA (2), New York (Time Square), Phoenix and Atlanta
  • setting up a GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research

While the cast and crew were still under contract, they gave subtle hints that they appreciated our efforts. It seems their contracts are up now and they’re not so subtle anymore.

On April 26, Henry Ian Cusick shared the petition on Twitter. Yesterday, Levy Tran posted a nice video edit of the MacGyver character reactions to the cancellation news.

In an interesting plot twist, Brad William Henke (Jonah Walsh in Episode 2×23) refused to sign the petition; stating that “they told me they were going to bring me back the next season for five episodes and then they just ghosted me”. Fans had always wondered why the character had never been brought back. With his tweet, Brad just revealed that they had indeed set up an entire Walsh storyline – only to drop it later for unknown reasons.

Other MacGyver-related News
There were several more Watch Parties over the week. On the Watch Party on April 24, there were about 175 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 537 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. There will be another Watch Party tonight before the episode airs.

Meredith Eaton kept posting BtS photos of all seasons as Instagram Stories. On April 28, she did an episode for Justin Hires’ “Urban Legendz Podcast”; available as a Patreon Exclusive.

About Episode 5×14 (MAC508)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×14 (H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins); written by Teresa Huang & Joshua Brown and directed by Christine Swanson. CBS released 12 Official Stills and 4 Sneak Peeks beforehand.

Episode 5×14: H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (Fernando Decillis/CBS via KsiteTV)

Before the episode aired, we got some more BtS material; e.g. by Justin Hires, Guest Star Chase Brown (Young Bozer) or Guest Star Wendy Raquel Robinson.

Several of the writers, producers plus cast members Lucas Till joined the live-tweeting (or at least tried to). Writers Teresa Huang and Josh Brown provided little tidbits; e.g. that Papa Bozer’s name Milt(on) was an Easter Egg for the Original Show, that Russ had been on an op in Johannesburg or that Levy Tran as Desi fought her own stunt double Danya Bateman in one scene.

Episode 5×14: H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (via Chase Brown)

The next day, we got more BtS material; e.g. Chase Brown (Young Bozer) with Auntie Pamela (Sherry Richards) and with Mama Bozer (Wendy Raquel Robinson). Sherry Richards also posted several photos; e.g with Chase Brown and Cali Reef (Young MacGyver) or with Ernie Hudson.

On April 19, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain posted his science notes of MacGyverisms for the episode.

Before the episode aired, fans were live-tweeting while having a Watch Party of several Season 2 episodes. There were about 528 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 2100 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver.

Episode 5×14: H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (via Wendy Raquel Robinson)

During the episode, there were about 2500 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 3000 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. Note that these numbers were achieved despite Twitter being broken completely for about 20 minutes (starting about 5 minutes after 8pm) and still acting up for many fans for several hours. For comparison: #MagnumPI had about 109 estimated tweets per hour and #BlueBloods about 492.

To recap: Episode 5×13 had 4.731 million live-viewers and a demo-rating of 0.47. Episode 5×14 got 4.329 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.48. This is the episode with the third-lowest live-audience numbers this season – but overall, most fans seemed to like it.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Justin Hires)

Compared to the other CBS scripted shows in the current TV Season (24 so far), it places Rank 16 in average audience numbers per episode and Rank 15 in average demo.

Compared to last year, the Reboot lost about 22% in live-audience numbers and 24% in demo. While that seems a lot, it barely lost in viewers and demo in Season 4. Also, several other CBS crime/drama shows lost about the same amount in ratings this TV season.

What you need to know about Episode 5×15 (MAC509)
Tonight is a rerun of Season 5 Premiere Episode 5×01 (MAC415). Next week will be the premiere of the Season 5 Finale aka Episode 5×15 (Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal). It was written by Monica Macer, Alessia Costantini, Andrew Klein & Stephanie Hicks and directed by David Straiton.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (Nathan Bolster/CBS via TV Insider)

We got the Press Release and 9 Official Stills on April 13. In case you need a refresher, here’s the synopsis:

When Mac and Riley go missing and wake up 24 hours later in a corn field with no memory of how they got there, they must unravel the mystery to find who took them, and how to get rid of the nanotrackers in their bodies, no matter the cost.

Otherwise, we don’t have any promo for the episode yet. Yesterday, they released another Season 5 BtS interview video; this time talking about dire situations and how MacGyver would get out of them with certain items on hand.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
On April 7, CBS announced via Deadline that the Season 5 Finale will also be the Series Finale. It didn’t take long for the fans to improvise a #SaveMacGyver Movement. Here’s some of the achievements so far:

  • a petition to renew the show for another season (reaching the mark of 15’000 signatures on April 16); hitting 19’000 signatures today
  • sending in more than 300’000 paperclips to the CBS Studios in LA and NY
  • writing dozens of e-mails and letters to CBS executives
  • contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series
  • setting up an official website, an Instagram account and a GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (e.g. a billboard or online ads)

There were several online articles by news outlets; e.g. ET Canada and Forbes, CNN, ScreenRant, CBS17 or PopCulture. Also, there’s a GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research in the name of MacGyver fans.

While the cast and crew are still under contract, they have given subtle hints that they appreciate our efforts; liking or sharing posts that carry the hashtag “SaveMacGyver”.

Other MacGyver-related News
There were more Watch Parties over the week. On the Watch Party on April 17, there were about 500 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 1000 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver.

Season 4 DVD Cover Preview (via Seat42F)

Here’s a short overview of MacGyver-related news in recent weeks you might have missed:

  • The Season 4 DVD Release date has been set for June 8. So far, there’s no information about any Bonus Features.
  • The Reboot was competing in the “Best of TV Awards 2020” held by Canada Graphs. It won Rank 3 in two categories: “Favorite TV Program” and “Best Writing“.
  • Son of the South was released on DVD and BluRay in the US on April 6. The cinematic release date for New Zealand and Australia is May 6.
  • The official MacGyver merch store is still open (and will probably stay open even after the Season Finale).

MacGyver Reboot Update #143

Only two more episodes left for Season 5. Tonight, we’re going back to Mission City; meeting Mama and Papa Bozer!

About Episode 5×13 (MAC507)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×13 (Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer); written by Alessia Costantini and Andrew Karlsruher and directed by Katie Eastridge. We got 13 Official Stills and 4 Sneak Peeks beforehand.

Episode 5×13: Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer (via Peter Allas)

Last week, we got a new BtS photo via Guest Star Peter Allas. Before the episode aired, we got some more BtS material; e.g. by Justin Hires or Meredith Eaton. Because the cast wasn’t busy filming for once, they had more time to post Instagram Stories and to tweet.

Several of the writers, producers plus cast members Lucas Till, Henry Ian Cusick, Meredith Eaton and Justin Hires joined the live-tweeting. Writer Alessia provided little insights on how the episode came to be; also revealing that the Picture Car Team had to build two cars from scratch, starting three months before filming started.

The next day, we got more BtS material; e.g. by Rat Wrangler Jamie Stimach, by MacGyverCBS or Tari Segal. On Sunday, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain posted his science notes of MacGyverisms for the episode, while Alessia continued to tweet little tidbits about the episode.

There were about 528 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #MacGyver and about 5100 estimated tweets per hour using the hashtag #SaveMacGyver. In fact, the hashtag #SaveMacGyver never fell below 400 estimated tweets per hour during the 24 hours before the episode aired.

For comparison: #MagnumPI had about 156 estimated tweets per hour and #BlueBloods about 2200.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Meredith Eaton)

To recap: Episode 5×12 had 4.335 million live-viewers and 0.49 in the important demo category. Episode 5×13 got more viewers, but a slightly lower demo; reaching 4.731 million live-viewers and a demo-rating of 0.47.

Compared to the other CBS scripted shows in the current TV Season (24 so far), it places Rank 16 in average audience numbers per episode and Rank 15 in average demo.

What you need to know about Episode 5×14 (MAC508)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×14 (H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins). It was written by Teresa Huang and Joshua Brown and directed by Christine Swanson.

Episode 5×14: H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (via MacGyverCBS)

We got the Press Release with a First Still on March 29. In case you need a reminder, here’s the synopsis:

Mac and Desi travel with Bozer to his childhood home when his aunt dies in a tragic accident, however, they soon discover she may have been murdered for trying to expose the city’s contaminated water supply. Also, Riley, Matty and Russ continue to follow leads on their nano-trackers investigation.

For the first (and probably last) time, we’ll meet Bozer’s parents (Ernie Hudson and Wendy Raquel Robinson). Also, we should see Young Bozer and Young MacGyver in a flashback sequence. Both flashback scenes with a young MacGyver for Season 4 had been cut, so I really hope one day we’ll get to watch those, too.

CBS released 12 Official Stills on April 8 and 4 Sneak Peeks yesterday.

Episode 5×14: H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (Fernando Decillis/CBS via Seat42F)

Writer Teresa Huang tweeted on April 14 that the episode will introduce a non-binary character named Sara (played by Emerson Paige); member of Riley’s hacker collective. She also revealed that the scenes of hacker Brooklyn (Harlan Drum) had been cut from last week’s episode.

What you need to know about Episode 5×15 (MAC509)
Next week, there will be a rerun of Season 5 Premiere Episode 5×01 (MAC415). On April 30 is the premiere of Episode 5×15 (Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal). It was written by Monica Macer, Alessia Costantini, Andrew Klein & Stephanie Hicks and directed by David Straiton.

We got the Press Release and 9 Official Stills on Tuesday. Here’s the synopsis:

When Mac and Riley go missing and wake up 24 hours later in a corn field with no memory of how they got there, they must unravel the mystery to find who took them, and how to get rid of the nanotrackers in their bodies, no matter the cost.

Otherwise, we don’t have much information about the episode. I’m not sure if we can hope for some extra promotion (e.g. interviews). It’s a pity that there wasn’t much extra promotion during the season; considering they had a new showrunner.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
On April 7, CBS announced via Deadline that the Season 5 Finale will also be the Series Finale: The MacGyver Reboot has been cancelled. It didn’t take long for the fans to get over the stages of shock and denial and to reach anger; starting to improvise a #SaveMacGyver Movement.

The petition to renew the show for another season got more than 2500 subscribers within 24 hours; reaching 6000 by Sunday and doubling within two days; hitting 12’000 on Monday. While the numbers have slowed down somewhat, it has not stopped; hitting the 15’000 mark today.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Kevin Marshall Pinkney)

Also, about 290’000 paperclips have been sent to the CBS Studios in LA and NY so far while fans started writing e-mails and letters.

There’s a lack of entertainment news due to the pandemic this Spring with movie relases pushed back and Fashion and Award Shows being streamed online. But it’s also due to fans reaching out to news outlets that the #SaveMacGyver Movement has started to make the news on the weekend.

By Sunday, the movement made it to articles by ET Canada and Forbes. During the week, other outlets picked the subject up; e.g. CNN, ScreenRant or PopCulture.

Episode 5×12: Royalty + Marriage + Vivaah Sanskar + Zinc + Henna (via Anne Renton)

Within a week, fans set up a website, an Instagram account and a GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (e.g. a billboard or online ads).

According to this Facebook post, the stage location will be available for filming again starting June 1st, meaning that they will have to tear down the stages and sets and clean out the offices within the next few weeks (if a new production wants to start moving in by that date).

While the cast and crew are still under contract and can’t speak out openly, they have given subtle hints that they appreciate our efforts and would love continuing to work on the show.

Several of the writers, producers and Lucas Till joined the live-tweeting. Combined with the fans, there were about 800 estimated tweets per hour.

Afterwards, Production Designer Danny Davila posted some more BtS photos. We also got some BtS photos by director Ann Renton and Guest Star Aneesha Joshi. On Wednesday, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain posted his science notes of MacGyverisms for the episode.

We got the Press Release with a first Official Still on March 25; with CBS releasing 13 Stills in total on March 30. In case you need a reminder, here’s the synopsis:

While Mac and the team delve into the world of Italian car culture in order to track down a crime boss-in-hiding, Mac must lean on Desi when he discovers that he losing the ability to control his hands. Also, Mac and Desi move in together and Riley reveals the truth about her secret team of hackers to Russ.

A few weeks ago, Fabio Massimo Bonini had posted a new BtS photo with Levy Tran.

With the news of the show getting cancelled, the upcoming episode got a bit neclected. Even Getty Images hadn’t bothered to upload some Stills until Thursday.

Yesterday, we got a new BtS photo via Guest Star Peter Allas. On his Facebook post, he revealed that production requested for him to wait with posting after the episode aired (or to get clearance before posting).

What you need to know about Episode 5×14 (MAC508)

That’s a wrap – for the Reboot
Principal filming has wrapped on March 23. The LA-based crew has already returned home. Tristin Mays recently posted an Instagram story while doing ADR for tonight’s Episode 5×13; so the post-production for the rest of the episodes is probably still ongoing and could count for the lack of Sneak Peeks so far.

On March 22, CBS announced that MacGyver will have its Season 5 Finale on April 30; airing an episode titled “Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal”. Sadly, we got to learn on April 7 that the Season 5 Finale will also be the Series Finale: The MacGyver Reboot has been cancelled without an additional last season.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Jordan Heir)

Deadline was the first to break the news, with other outlets (e.g. Hollywood Reporter, Variety or The Wrap) following suit. Like most fans and all the ratings prediction sites, I was pretty suprised.

It didn’t take long for the fans starting to tweet in a frenzy; talking about their feelings and saying thank you to cast and crew. There’s also a petition going on (getting more than 2500 subscribers within 24 hours) to save the show and paperclips being sent to the CBS Studios in LA.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Alessia Costantini)

Some of the cast and the current writing team immediately posted their goodbyes and said Thank You; e.g. Lucas Till, Meredith Eaton, Justin Hires or Henry Ian Cusick. A day later, Levy Tran posted a goodbye video. Tristin Mays also tweeted yesterday.

A lot of the crew posted about missing the show; uploading new/old BtS photos and talking about some of their treasured memories; e.g. grip Steven Serna, Dan Emo (via Insta Stories) or Stand-Ins Kevin Marshall Pinkney and Amanda Mazonkey.

Other MacGyver-related News
Not much interesting stuff going on when your favorite show just got cancelled, huh. But here’s a short overview of MacGyver-related news in recent weeks you might have missed:

  • On March 27, Lucas Till joined a virtual relay to New Orleans for Shirts Across America.
  • Also on March 27, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain was part of a WonderConAtHome panel called “Science Behind Smart TV”. A day later, Script Editor Teresa Huang joined a panel called “Inside the Writer Room: The Show Must Go On – Surviving the Room In The Age Of COVID”.
  • Son of the South was released on DVD and BluRay in the US on April 6. I haven’t seen any mentions if there are any bonus materials.

It’s a bit ironic that CBS re-opened the MacGyver merch store just a few months before the show got cancelled. Since the store for Hawaii Five-0 is still up, I expect them to do the same for this show.
