MacGyver Reboot Update #148

While the fans continue fighting for Season 6, former cast and crew are keeping busy with new projects or spending time with friends.

About the Season 6 Storylines (encore)
ICYMI: Before the Season 5 Finale on April 30, Matt Mitovich had released an interview with Showrunner Monica Macer for TV Line; talking about tweaking the finale a bit and teasing the fans that some of the nanobots might have “survived”. She also adressed potential storylines for Season 6 if the show hadn’t been cancelled – e.g. the future of Mac and Desi, Desi and her “lost” fiancé, the “hero couple” and the fun of Mac, Russ and Bozer on a treasure hunt.

A few days later, TV Line added an article revealing that Season 6 would have delivered a baby. On May 15, Mitovich posted yet another article; this time elaborating on what would have led to the first kiss between Mac and Riley.

Some fans were disappointed about these storylines; stating that they didn’t want another season in that case. If you’re one of these fans, remember that these are only ideas; not approved by the network yet.

Even if a show gets renewed, it could take months or even years until it’s going into production. It could be shipped to another network, for example. Also, the two OG MacGyver movies didn’t have any ties to the OG show storyline in the Season Finale.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (via Monica Macer)

Even if the show would stay on CBS, there’s no guarantee Season 6 would still have Macer as showrunner or the same writers who worked on Season 5. Some of the cast might be unavailable for filming. They might have a smaller budget; not bringing back all of the regular actors. They could do a spin-off instead of a continuation.

It’s still worth fighting for a renewal because anything can happen. And isn’t a movie or a handful of episodes for a webseries better than nothing? Lucas went through hell and fought so hard to get the cast and crew justice. Shouldn’t we at least try to give him a chance of playing the character again; no matter the storylines?

What’s going to happen now?
On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall Season schedule. There’s no premiere dates yet, but our favorite slot goes to SWAT for a handful of episodes. Around midseason, SWAT will move to Sundays 10pm to replace SEAL Team, which was renewed and will premiere in Fall as well, but will be moved to Paramount+ midseason to gather new subscribers.

A bit confusing? It is. For now, CBS hasn’t announced yet which unscripted / reality show will take over the Friday 8pm slot once SWAT has been moved. I can’t imagine it does Magnum PI any favors, though.

International Season 5 Finale Promo (via AXN Asia)

Starting tonight, CBS will air two reruns of Magnum PI on Fridays 8pm before going back to one rerun at 8pm so they have room for reality show Love Island at 9pm. Usually, they put reruns of an existing show to their new slot during hiatus, but maybe CBS has other plans for SWAT in late Summer.

For now, SWAT has two reruns on Wednesdays. Considering that CBS still has reruns of cancelled shows Mom and NCIS: New Orleans on the schedule while still not having set a release date for Summer Show Blood + Treasure, it seems like they’re a bit short on Summer hiatus material after cancelling 3 drama shows in total.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
Here’s an update for the achievements of the #SaveMacGyver Movement during the last two weeks:

  • The petition to renew the show for another season hit the mark of 27’000 signatures on May 7. It lost about 3000 signatures (due to the website removing signatures without verified email address). It’s currently back at about 26’800 signatures as I’m writing this post.
  • A big package of 1 million paperclips have been sent to CBS Studios recently; meaning that fans sent so far about 1.45 million paperclips.
  • Fans keep sending e-mails and writing letters to CBS executives and calling the CBS offices; also contacting other networks and streaming companies to pick up the series. So far, about 260’000 requests have been made to Netflix.
  • The GoFundMe-Page to fund more promo (especially billboards, paperclips or press kits) is still up; standing at almost 9800 USD.
  • The 5 digital billboards in Los Angeles, New York (Time Square), Phoenix and Atlanta were up until end of May. There might be more coming soon.
  • The GoFundMe-Page named “Operation Cure Cancer” to collect money for cancer research is still up; standing at 1900 USD.

The official website gets updated regularly; so check here to keep up with news and learning about the movement and how to help.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
Lucas Till’s movie “Son of the South” premiered in Australia and New Zealand on May 20. There was quite a bit of promo surrounding it, but mostly with Bob Zellner. While cinemas are opening again around the world, the movie might get some more theatrical release dates before the blockbusters will fill up the schedule. In Spain, it already premiered on TV.

As Variety reported on May 28, Lucas got cast in “The Spook Who Sat by The Door” Pilot at FX; playing CIA Agent Graham Renfroe. They started filming on May 24. While I have seen some posts about a hotel set, nice cars and night shoots, there were no BtS photos of the main cast yet.

While some fans might be discouraged about Lucas not being available for MacGyver anymore, you need to remember that it’s just a pilot for now. His character might have limited screentime, or it’s a recurring role for a handful of episodes only. The show might not get picked up to series or his character will be dropped. Remember the Unaired MacGyver Pilot that lost the entire cast besides the two leads after being ordered to series?

In any case, Lucas needs to keep his face on screens while he’s in demand and people remember him. He needs to connect with new directors, producers and actors not associated with CBS. Also, he’s way too talented to sit at home while waiting for CBS to do the right thing.

As stated above, anything can happen. It might take months or even years for MacGyver to continue. It’s worth noting that CBS show Criminal Minds got their revival a year after cancellation. And Original CSI will be continued as CSI: Vegas this Fall (with several of the original actors) 6 years after its Series Finale.

While Justin Hires has been back doing comedy shows and releasing new music, we don’t know much about what the others have been up to regarding work. Tristin Mays updated her IMDb page with more photos, but has no new project listed yet. Henry Ian Cusick is currently attached to several movies. Levy Tran has been working on her martial arts skills.

The Season 4 DVD
In the US, the release date for the Season 4 DVD has been set for June 8. Critical Blast confirmed on Twitter that there are no Extras on the US-version. They were nice enough to add a photo of the back cover; adding confirmation that no love was put into the DVD design, either.

I feel that the back cover “art” has gotten worse with every new season. Considering that almost every CBS Fall show got their former season DVD released before the new season premiered, I’m not sure why it took them so long to put this simple DVD box together.

Season 4 DVD Cover for Australia (via JB Hifi)

There’s additional release dates for countries outside the US; e.g. July 7 in Australia, August 4 in Japan and August 19 in German-speaking countries. So far, there’s no information about potential Bonus Features on international DVD versions; but let’s hope for the best.

Other MacGyver-related News
Costume Designer Sarah Downer has uploaded several BtS photos taken during costume fittings; e.g. of Henry Ian Cusick in his kilt (for Episode 5×12), of Tristin Mays (for Episode 3×11), of Lucas Till (for Episode 5×11), of George Eads or of Levy Tran.

Episode 5×12: Royalty + Marriage + Vivaah Sanskar + Zinc + Henna (via Sarah Downer)

Here’s a short overview of MacGyver-related news in recent weeks you might have missed:

  • In Italy, Season 4 premiered on May 27 on Ray4.
  • In the UK, Season 5 premiered on May 30 on Sky One.
  • CBS added face masks as merch items to their MacGyver store. They had 56 items in total before splitting the store into two seperate stores for the OG show (41 items) and the Reboot (15 items).

MacGyver Reboot Update #114

Production for Season 5 has officially begun with the writers office being open. Otherwise, there’s not much news.

All you need to know about Season 5
ICYMI: On June 12, the MacGyverWriters tweeted that they’re back in the (virtual) office and working on new scripts. In a Skype interview with The Morning Show for Global News (Canada) on June 17, Lucas Till revealed that we will see more of Mac’s vulnerability and hopefully more character development in Season 5.

Writer Stephanie Hicks teased the fans that we might get to know the fate of the parakeet that MacGyver and Desi had adopted.

BtS photo of Season 4/5 (via MacGyverCBS)

Story Editor Teresa Huang joined a zoom interview for LockDownCon last week; talking about TV Show writing and editing with a group of 4 other writers (e.g. Nancy Kiu who had worked on MacGyver for the first three seasons). She revealed that it was a bit intimidating to come onto a show that’s already so established, despite having watched all episodes.

What’s going to happen now?
CBS plans for the show to return in Fall, in its previous timeslot (Fridays, 8pm), but here’s no filming date announced yet. Due to the pandemic, all networks had to implement guidelines and safety protocols – but all the planning only helps so much in a global pandemic.

New hairstyle for Riley? (via Tristin Mays)

It initially looked like they opted for a filming start in July, but considering the daily cases rising again in most states and in Georgia as well, that doesn’t seem very likely. The first CBS primetime show listed with a production date (for August) was comedy rookie B Positive (that’s most likely filmed on stage in the Paramount lot). At the moment, it looks like shows being filmed in Vancouver and Hawaii will be the first crime shows to return to work; e.g. Magnum PI (that eyes an August start as well) or the CW shows.

Considering that Lucas Till just left for a cross-country trip of presumably 4 weeks, filming for MacGyver probably won’t start very soon. September seems a much better estimate to me at the moment.

Official Poster for “Son of the South” (via Clear Horizon Entertainment)

For once, CBS did some in-between promo; releasing an article with Lucas sharing a few of the most brilliant MacHacks. Not surprisingly, 3 of the 5 mentioned episodes are from the most recent Season 4 – but sadly not from the episodes we haven’t seen yet.

For the moment, there’s more reruns of Season 3 and Season 4 episodes to enjoy. There’s episodes pushed and swapped and cancelled every few days, so this schedule might already be faulty by tomorrow:

  • Friday, July 10 (8pm): Mason + Cable + Choices (3×22)
  • Friday, July 17 (8pm): Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed (4×02)
  • Saturday, July 25 (8pm): Lidar + Rogues + Duty (3×16)

Sadly, they’re bringing back “The Greatest At-Home Videos” for another month, starting July 24. So once again, the pre-scheduled reruns have been dropped.  Of course, there’s many more Fridays until Fall Season, so we might get more Season 4 reruns in August and September.

Season 3 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 3×19 (Friends + Enemies + Border) on June 12 had 3.810 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 3×20 (No Go + High Voltage + Rescue) on June 19 (at 9pm for once) got 3.140 million live-viewers; also with a demo of 0.3. Last Saturday, the rerun of Episode 3×21 (Treason + Heartbreak + Gum) garnered 1.824 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.2.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
With the pandemic and the lockdowns in many US cities, cast and crew mostly stayed home in the last few months. Therefore, there’s not many sightings and news about upcoming projects. For Lucas Till, a first poster plus new Stills for his upcoming movie “Son of the South” have surfaced. IMDb lists the release date as September 16. As mentioned above, he’s just started a trip across the country with his brother Nick, roommate Mike and some friends.

Season 3 DVD Release Teaser Photo (via Amazon Germany)

Last week, Tristin Mays did a podcast interview with Brandon Thomas. She talks about the day she auditioned for MacGyver and reveals that she actually had been thinking to quit acting for good after the 3 auditions she did that day (which was also her birthday). She’s also got a completely new hairstyle. It will be interesting to see if she’ll keep it for Season 5 or not.

Justin Hires’ script for Half Baked 2 was selected to receive a tax credit allocated by the California Film Commission. According to the state tax credit, production needs to begin within the next 180 days (in Los Angeles). I’m not sure in what form Justin is involved in the production besides writing the script and what that will mean for MacGyver; especially in case they can’t start production on the movie within this time limit. Considering he just experienced the personal loss of his older brother dying a few days ago, his priorities for work projects might shift for a while.

MacGyver around the World
ICYMI: The Season 4 Premiere in the UK (on Sky) was postponed several times. Last time I checked, they tweeted it’ll start at the end of July.

Sat. 1 Season 4 Preview Screenshot

The German-speaking Premiere of Season 4 will be on Swiss Channel 3+, just a few days before airing on German channel Sat.1 as well. On June 25, Sat.1 released the first trailer; consisting of scenes taken from the first four episodes. The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 4×01: Tödlicher Torpedo (literal translation: Deadly Torpedo; original title: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix)
  • 4×02: Projekt Quirk (Project Quirk; Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed)
  • 4×03: Steuerlos am Himmel (Rudderless in the Sky; Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck)
  • 4×04: Wettlauf mit der Zeit (Race against Time; Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin)

Like last year, German-speaking countries get the Season 3 DVD after the Season 4 Premiere – what a missed opportunity for new viewers to catch up.

Here’s the upcoming DVD release dates for Season 3:

  • July 15 (Australia, New Zealand)
  • July 16 (Germany, Austria, Switzerland)
  • August 26 (France)
  • September 2 (Japan, Part 1)
  • October 9 (Japan, Part 2)

MacGyver Reboot Update #113

Production for Season 5 has officially begun! The writers are back in their (virtual) office; working on the scripts.

Virtual Writers Room (via MacGyver Writers)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

About Episode and Script Numbers
On June 11, the MacGyverWriters Twitter account changed their profile photo and their header. The next day, they tweeted that they’re back in the (virtual) office and working on scripts for Season 5. Pretty exciting, huh.

Because the writers had added a photo to their tweet; indicating that they’re working on Episode 501, some fans got worried that the episodes already filmed for Season 4 will be scrapped. I can’t imagine that to happen since CBS doesn’t have the luxury to dismiss ready-to-air-episodes at the moment. With the numbers of daily new cases flaring up in California and NY having been hit the hardest by the pandemic, it’s unlikely that all TV shows will be able to resume filming as planned.

According to Variety, CBS soap The Bold and the Beautiful halted production just a day after resuming filming. At this point, CBS is lucky if they get all their crime shows to reach just 13 episodes.

Script Title Page for Episode 4×01: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (via Christopher Jon Duddy)

Also, note that there’s a difference between the episode number that states the order of episodes being aired on TV and the production number of the script that states the order of the episodes being filmed. Episodes are not always filmed in the same order as they’re aired; e.g. because a guest star or a location isn’t available otherwise. This can be a bit confusing.

For example, they first filmed Episode 10×07 for Season 10 of Hawaii Five-0. Filming for H50 was often out of order due to some cast members having a reduced schedule or in this case because several scenes of 10×07 were filmed on location in LA. As you can see on The Futon Critic (that lists the production number rather then the episode number), the airing order of the episodes was 1002 (as Episode 10×01), 1003 (as 10×02), 1004 (as 10×03), 1006 (as 10×04), 1005 (as 10×05), 1007 (as 10×06), 1001 (as 10×07) and so on.

Script Title Page for Episode 3×21: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (via Sarah Downer)

It didn’t happen as often on MacGyver, but it happened three times so far (as you can also see on the photos of the script title pages):

  • Episode 2×03 (Roulette Wheel + Wire) has production number 202 (and vice versa) because Episode 2×03 was filmed before Episode 2×02.
  • Episode 3×21 (Treason + Heartbreak + Gum) has production number 322 (and vice versa) because Episode 3×21 was filmed last in Season 3.
  • Episode 4×02 (Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed) has production number 401 (and vice versa) because they filmed Episode 4×02 as the first episode.

Therefore, we only know that they filmed 414 in January after the hiatus – but we don’t know yet if it was ever supposed to be aired as 4×14 or not. Similarly, the photo tweeted by the writers only shows the episode that will be filmed first this season, so script/production number 501. We don’t know yet if this will be a newly written episode or a script that was initially written as 420 or 421 last season. Due to the guidelines and safety protocols for the pandemic (see further down), they probably had to rewrite both scripts.

Script Title Page for Episode 2×02: Muscle Car + Paper Clips (via Tristin Mays)

All you need to know about Season 5
Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season (or rather, what we don’t know yet):

  • CBS plans for the show to return in Fall, in the previous timeslot (Fridays, 8pm).
  • There is no further information yet about the number of episodes being ordered.
  • There’s no filming date yet.
  • There is no premiere date yet.
  • Teresa Huang joined the crew as Story Editor.
  • There’s no new key art nor a new production SAK logo yet.

It’s always been very quiet in June regarding production, but it feels worse this year with no additional events. We did get a BtS video of a deleted scene filmed for Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch), though.

Skype interview with The Morning Show (Screenshot via Global News)

In a Skype interview with The Morning Show for Global News (Canada) on June 17, Lucas Till confirmed that Monica Macer joined the show as showrunner. He revealed that he was surprised when reading the script for the Season 4 Finale and that we will see more of Mac’s vulnerability and hopefully more character development in Season 5.

How the pandemic could affect Season 5
ICYMI: Hollywood submitted a COVID-19 Reopening Plan from studios, unions and producers to the NY and CA governors; with CBS Studios being a participant. They’re very similar to the Georgia safety measures and might lead to changes not only in production, but also in storylines, guest stars, settings and locations. (Note that the guidelines might change again now that California just implemented a mandatory mask rule.)

A new/old Lucas sighting in May (via Dana Till)

For example, the various guidelines implemented so far recommend to…

  • implement periodic and regular temperature checks and testing
  • enforce physical distancing between cast (e.g. filming scenes with more distance between the actors; actors staying in their trailers until they’re actually needed on set)
  • enforce physical distancing between crew (e.g. with implementing virtual writers rooms and virtual casting sessions)
  • limit hair and makeup services for actors
  • scrap open buffets for meals and coffee breaks
  • reduce the number of fighting scenes and/or intimate scenes
  • reduce the number of Extras
  • reduce the number of scenes being filmed in public locations
  • wear masks if cast and/or crew can’t keep their distance
  • eliminate sharing of crew equipment

Sadly, the pandemic might also reduce the numbers of episodes ordered for TV shows in general – not just because of delayed filming for some shows, but mainly because the safety measures and guidelines will not just increase the cost of production and post-production, but might also slow it down.

Episode 3×17: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

It’s possible they’ll build new indoor sets (e.g. offices for Matty or Russ) so they can film in smaller groups or do stand-alone-scenes (e.g. Matty advising over the phone instead of with the entire team in the War Room).

Regarding storylines, we can assume that Season 5 will have less action scenes and less intimate scenes. If they introduced any new love interests at the end of Season 4, they might simply disappear (but it’s not like we haven’t experienced this before). They might also return to episodes with parallel missions; introducing B and C storylines to ensure smaller mission teams. That’s a pity in my opinion, but I guess reduced and limited work for cast and crew with lesser episodes is better than no work and no episodes at all.

What’s going to happen now?
CBS installed guidelines and safety protocols for the TV shows getting ready to film. Yet, all the planning only helps so much in a global pandemic – see the case of The Bold and the Beautiful above. For now, it’s still a waiting game with CBS findind out via trial and error what works and what doesn’t. Since they’re following the usual timeline as they have in previous seasons, they still seem to opt for a filming start in July.

Episode 3×19: Friends + Enemies + Border (via Noor Anna Maher)

There’s still reruns of Season 3 episodes scheduled for most Fridays; with occasional reruns on Saturdays. Here’s the current schedule:

  • Friday, June 19 (9pm): No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (3×20)
  • Saturday, June 27 (8pm): Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (3×21)
  • Friday, July 3 (8pm): Mason + Cable + Choices (3×22)
  • Friday, July 10 (8pm): tba
  • Friday, July 17 (8pm): tba
  • Friday, July 24 (8pm): tba
  • Saturday, July 25 (8pm): tba
  • Friday, July 31 (8pm): tba

It’s safe to assume that they will also schedule reruns of Season 4; just in time to end with the Season 4 Finale before Season 5 is supposed to start.

Season 3 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 3×15 (K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit) on Friday, May 22 got 4.31 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.4. A day later, the rerun of Episode 3×06 (Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc) had 1.79 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.1.

Season 3 DVD Release Teaser Photo (via Amazon Germany)

The rerun of Episode 3×17 (Seeds + Permafrost + Feather) on June 5 had 3.835 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.4; once again winning the 8pm timeslot in viewer numbers. Last Friday, the rerun of Episode 3×19 (Friends + Enemies + Border) had 3.810 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3.

Other MacGyver News
The title sequence for Season 4 was nominated for the AICP Post Awards in the Category “Graphic Design & Animation”. The event was supposed to be held online on June 10 before it was postponed to June 17. Sadly, another project won in this category.

The Season 4 Premiere in the UK (on Sky) was initially set for May 31, then postponed to June 7, and then to June 14. Last time I checked, they tweeted it’ll start at the end of July.

French Season 3 DVD Cover (via fnac)

There’s finally DVD release dates for Season 3 in several countries:

  • July 15 (Australia, New Zealand)
  • July 16 (Germany, Austria, Switzerland)
  • August 26 (France)
  • September 2 (Japan, Part 1)
  • October 9 (Japan, Part 2)

Besides Japan, all versions have the same cover and contain bonus material (Gag Reel and Deleted Scenes), so there’s a good chance that fans living in the US will be able to watch it as soon as the international fans get their hands on it.

Looking Back at Season 3 (V) – The Official Stills (Part 5)

It’s been 6 weeks for the Fall shows on CBS. Not for MacGyver, sadly. So let’s (finally!) finish another blog post to help easing the pain of having to wait for Season 4, no?

As with Seasons 1 and 2, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each episode of Season 3; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. (Because I just can’t keep quiet, as you all know.)

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via Getty Images)

If you missed Part 1 (Episodes 3×01 to 3×05), you can read the post here. For Part 2 (Episodes 3×06 to 3×10), you can visit there. Part 3 (Episodes 3×11 to 3×15) is to be found here. And there you can read Part 4 (Episodes 3×16 to 3×19).

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Still Photographer: Jace Downs)
For Episode 3×20, we got 11 Official Stills by Still Photographer Jace Downs. Most of them are not all that interesting, but there is a nice team shot that already has been used for a lot of Season 4 fan art.

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Official Still via CBS)

MY FAVORITE: The walking team shot one, of course.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing downright disappointing. Four Stills of the cast sitting in a car just aren’t all that good for getting people interested in the episode beforehand.

Episode 3×21: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (Erik Voake)
For Episode 3×21, we got 11 photos. Sadly, the Official Stills were never released on SpoilerTV in good quality. Some of the Stills aren’t even available anyhwere but on Getty Images.

Episode 3×21: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (via MacGyverCBS)

MY FAVORITE: Pretty people doing obscure things. A longer scene with Desi and Oversight could have been very interesting – considering she’s now taking over the role of Jack (who Oversight kind of chose to be put together with Mac to watch his back while he didn’t with Desi).

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Not much to choose from. Only one Still with the main character – and it’s watermarked. To be honest, I don’t really like this episode that much and I think the BtS photos are way more interesting. It had originally been intended to be the Season Finale and I’m really glad they didn’t go with it.

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Jace Downs)
The Season Finale delivered 12 Official Stills. Weirdly, CBS later deleted 4 of them from their official press release page before SpoilerTV got a hand on them. As with Episode 3×21, these Stills are only available via Getty Images and therefore watermarked.

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via TV Insider)

MY FAVORITE: It’s Mac doing his thing while the others don’t really know what’s going on.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: With the press release, it wasn’t a secret anymore that Peter Weller would be guest-starring as the big bad in this episode. A Still with him would have been nice. Also, for a Season Finale, the Stills aren’t all that exciting – but the same can be said about the finale episodes for the previous seasons. On the other hand, they had released the first Still for the Season 2 Finale as a First Look Still of Oversight via TV Line. Nothing like that this time.

MacGyver Reboot Update #82

It’s Season Finale Friday! You can enjoy it without any worries, since the show just got renewed for another Season!

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via TV Insider)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×20 and 3×21
As for almost the entire season, the teasers were only 10 seconds long. Both episodes got Sneak Peeks – but as so often, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods got their Sneak Peeks almost two days earlier than MacGyver did. Also, the Official Stills for the last two episodes were never posted on SpoilerTV.

Some of the guest stars uploaded a few new BtS photos for Episode 3×20; e.g. Eileen Faxas. Lucas Till had also offered a new BtS photo. Justin Hires’ Bozer stunt double Tim R. McAdams uploaded BtS photos and videos of one of the stunts on Wednesday.

BtS photo of Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (via Lucas Till)

On April 28, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded his usual blog post with science notes about the so-called MacHacks in this episode.

For Episode 3×21 (Treason + Heartbreak + Gum), ET Online posted an interview with Meredith Eaton talking about her character in the last two episodes and an exclusive, additional Sneak Peek of Matty meeting up with Ethan (Brendan Hines).

It’s worth noting that the article had been edited shortly after posting, although it’s not stated in the article itself. For once, they’ve edited Meredith’s age, but they’ve also edited the part with Meredith talking about the “sparking relationship” between Matty and Oversight.

Episode 3×21: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (via MacGyverCBS)

It’s not clear if there was a misunderstanding or if they just spoilered the Season Finale since Episode 3×21 has been written and filmed as Episode 3×22 originally. They must have switched the airing order during post-production. So it’s possible this interview has been done a while ago, while still thinking Episode 3×21 would be the last one of this season.

Very few of the guest stars uploaded a few new BtS photos for Episode 3×21; e.g. Zane Stephens. Meredith Eaton uploaded a BtS photo of her during post-production with her doing ADR. The official CBS account posted a few of the Official Stills on their social media accounts.

For her “heartbreak scene” in Episode 3×21, Tristin Mays got an honorable mention as “Performer of the Week” by TV Line. MacGyver’s quips about burning stuff to get Riley laughing also made it for TV Line‘s “Quote of the Week“. On the same day, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded the blog post with science notes about the MacHacks.

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Official Still via What2Vue)

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To freshen up your memory: Episode 3×19 caught the attention of 6.075 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. All three CBS shows had a demo of 0.7, winning both the demo and the audience numbers timeslot for Friday. In the +7 Ratings, the episode added 1.444 million viewers (+24%), reaching a total of 7.523 million viewers with a demo of 1.02 (+45%).

Episode 3×20 managed 5.541 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6. In the +7 Ratings, the episode added 1.465 million viewers (+26%), reaching a total of 7.009 million viewers with a demo of 0.86 (+49%).

Episode 3×21 had 5.326 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6, making it the episode with the lowest ratings this season. There weren’t that many tweets sent out, but fans seemed to appreciate the episode on social media; especially the hugging scene between Mac and Riley.

About the Season 3 Ratings
At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.137 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.70. Compared to the 26 scripted shows on CBS at the moment, the Reboot is at rank 22 in demo and at rank 13 in audience numbers. Comparing to last season, Season 3 lost about 16% in demo and roughly 11% in live audience numbers.

BtS photo of Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (via CBS)

All the other CBS crime-action shows with similar audience numbers as MacGyver have been renewed as well, so let’s compare them again:

  • Magnum PI closed their first season at 5.992 million live-viewers per episode with a 0.89 demo-rating.
  • SEAL Team is at 5.056 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.76 on average. The show will have one more episode to go. Compared to last year, they lost about 24% in both demo ratings and audience numbers.
  • SWAT is at 5.284 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.78 and has one more episode to go. It lost about 18% in demo ratings and about 10% in audience numbers compared to last season.
  • Former CBS darling Bull is at 6.686 million live-viewers per episode with a 0.75 demo-rating. It lost about 37% in both demo ratings and audience numbers, which is one of the reasons why several outlets had speculated it might get cancelled, despite being only one season shy of syndication.

All you need to know about Episode 3×22
The Season Finale is titled “Mason + Cable + Choices”. The episode was written by Jim Adler and directed by Maja Vrvilo. There are guest appearances by Peter Weller and Emerson Brooks.

Episode 3×22: Mason + Cable + Choices (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

The Press Release with the first Official Still was posted on April 18, with more Stills added on May 6. For once, they also landed on SpoilerTV afterwards. Here’s the synopsis:

MacGyver faces off with a cunning new adversary whose carefully crafted plans put Mac at the epicenter of an impossible choice: save the life of a friend, or save the lives of hundreds of innocents. Also, Mac receives new information that will drive a wedge between him and his father.

In her interview with ET Online, Meredith Eaton said that the episode is one of the most exciting episodes they’ve ever shot, stating that guest-star Peter Weller’s character “wreaks havoc on all of us, putting Mac and all of us in danger.” She also revealed that Season 3 will end in a cliffhanger.

Yesterday, CBS released 3 Sneak Peeks. So far, they didn’t do much in additional Season Finale promo, which is a bit of a pity, but not that unusual for CBS this year. They did give us a few new BtS photos though, e.g. a snapshot with Levy Tran and Tristin Mays.

That’s a Wrap… or not.
Post-production continued for quite a while this season. Justin Hires finished his ADR for the last episode on April 24; Meredith Eaton on April 29.

The LA Wrap Party was held last on April 20, together with Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. Sadly, none of the regular cast of MacGyver attended the event. Both David Dastmalchian and Michael Des Barres had posted a photo of themselves with Henry Winkler. Peter Lenkov had posted a handful of Instagram Stories with David, Michael, Levy Tran and the MacGyver Cake.

All you need to know about Season 4
Fans were getting impatient and worried, but yesterday CBS finally broke the news that MacGyver has been renewed for another Season. The info for both MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 being renewed came right on Executive Producer Peter Lenkov’s birthday.

Interestingly, Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) will replace Craig O’Neill as new Co-Showrunner. There’s no further information yet if that means the show will go a bit into a different creative direction. Levy Tran is expected to being promoted to Series Regular, but there hasn’t been any official news about the cast so far.

The schedule should be announced next Wednesday at the CBS Upfronts. With all 3 Friday shows being renewed, the Reboot will probably keep the same timeslot.

MacGyver in France
The ratings for the episodes aired in April and May so far were more or less stable, with Episode 3×14 getting the lowest and Episode 3×15 getting the best audience numbers of Season 3 so far.

Interestingly, they stopped airing two episodes of the new season followed by one episode of Season 2; airing one episode of Season 3, followed by two episodes of Season 2 instead.

As stated on the website of CeDe Switzerland, the French DVD for Season 2 will be released on July 17.

MacGyver in Germany and other MacGyver News
The German DVD for Season 2 has a relase date of July 11 on Amazon. Interestingly, the preview cover has the same “old” promo poster like the French version. They changed it for the US and UK DVD release, so it’s not sure yet what definitive cover German-speaking and other European countries will get.

Cover-Preview for the Season 2 German DVD (via Amazon Germany)

It was safe to assume the Free-TV-Premiere for Season 3 will be July as well like last year (since the Season 1 DVD had been released just a week before the Premiere of the 2nd season). It’s not official yet, but German TV magazine Hörzu states that the Premiere of the “new season” will be on July 9 this year. (It’s stated after the Season 2 airdate in the US and doesn’t specifically mention Season 3. It could be a typo for the year since Season 2 premiered on July 9 last year.)

Contrary to the other two seasons, the 3rd season will air on Tuesdays anyway since German TV channel Sat.1 recently switched their Crime-Mondays to Crime-Tuesdays. It’s difficult to predict if this will have any influence on the ratings.

Tech Consultant Rhett Allain did a short video interview with WGNO; talking about the Reboot and why it’s so fun.

ICYMI: In the newest issue of TV Guide, you can find an interview done at Paley Fest LA with the three lead actors of Peter Lenkov’s Reboots; talking about their characters and the shows.

The MacGyver Manual recently added new photos to the release date of September 17, 2019. The book has 208 pages, focusing on the reboot series with “shout outs” to the original. It’s written and edited by Ian Cannon with the help of Tech Consultant Rhett Allain and contains illustrations and images by Juan Calle.

MacGyver Reboot Update #81

We still have 3 more episodes to enjoy on TV for this season. Interestingly, the order of the last two episodes has been switched.

About Episode 3×19
CBS didn’t bother with additional promo to the 10-second-teaser until Friday. To make up for it, they posted two Sneak Peeks and a few BtS photos. Noor Anna Maher posted many BtS photos the days after; e.g. with Lucas Till, with Levy Tran, with the director or with the stunt coordinators. Director Andi Armaganian uploaded a BtS photo with Lucas.

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. Episode 3×19 caught the attention of 6.075 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. All three CBS shows had a demo of 0.7, winning both the demo and the audience numbers timeslot for Friday. In the +7 Ratings, the episode added 1.444 million viewers (+24%), reaching a total of 7.523 million viewers with a demo of 1.02 (+45%)

On April 15, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded his usual blog post with science notes about the MacHacks in this episode.

About the Season 3 Ratings

Compared to the 25 scripted shows on CBS at the moment, the Reboot is at rank 22 in demo and at rank 13 in audience numbers. Comparing to last season, Season 3 lost about 14% in demo and roughly 10% in live audience numbers.

As every week, let’s take a look at some other CBS crime-action shows with similar audience numbers. Magnum PI closed their first season at 5.992 million live-viewers per episode with a 0.89 demo-rating.

SEAL Team is at 5.134 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.78 on average. Compared to last year, they lost about 23% in both demo ratings and audience numbers. There still hasn’t been any official news yet about MacGyver, SEAL Team or SWAT being renewed, leading to the fans asking the CBS studios and producers daily about any renewal news.

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Official Still via Justin Hires)

All you need to know about Episode 3×20
Episode 3×20 is titled “No Go + High Voltage + Rescue”, written by Rob Pearlstein and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by Eagle Egilsson. The Press Release was posted on April 8 with more Official Stills added on April 15. Here’s the synopsis:

When two American tourists go missing while doing a “No-Go Scavenger Hunt” through some of the world’s most dangerous countries, the Phoenix team goes undercover as backpackers to find them and bring them home alive.

Again, the teaser is only 10 seconds long. Sadly, SpoilerTV never bothered to upload the Official Stills. Thankfully, Showbizjunkie posted 4 of the additional Stills on their website – not in the usual HD quality, but without any watermarks.

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Official Still via CBS)

As always, MacGyver fans had to wait longer for their Sneak Peeks than fans of Hawaii Five-0 or Blue Bloods. To make up for it, CBS released 4 Sneak Peeks yesterday. For once, they didn’t spoil too much of the storyline.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×21 and 3×22
Including today, we have 3 more episodes to enjoy before the Season 3 finale on May 10. Let’s do a short recap of all the information for the two last episodes:

  • 3×21 (filmed as 3×22): Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (May 3)
Written by Nancy Kiu and Lindsey Allen, directed by Stephen Herek. Guest appearances by Lance Gross and Brendan Hines.
  • 3×22 (filmed as 3×21): Mason + Cable + Choices (May 10)
Written by Jim Adler, directed by Maja Vrvilo. Guest appearances by Peter Weller and Emerson Brooks.

The Press Release and a first Official Still for each episode was posted on April 18. As you can see, they switched the episodes around. Either, they adjusted to the availability of some of the guest stars, or they decided that Episode 21 would make a better Season Finale.

That’s a Wrap… or not.
Post-production continued in the last few weeks. They filmed some inserts and additional footage; followed by editing and doing ADR (e.g. for Tristin Mays and Lance Gross). Justin Hires finished his ADR for the last episode on April 24.

The Wrap Party for the Atlanta Crew was celebrated on March 24. Apparently, the LA Wrap Party was held last Saturday, together with Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. Sadly, none of the regular cast of MacGyver attended the event. Both David Dastmalchian and Michael Des Barres posted a photo of themselves with Henry Winkler. Peter Lenkov posted a handful of Instagram Stories with David, Michael, Levy Tran and the MacGyver Cake.

Every now and then, the cast posts a few new photos of upcoming episodes; e.g. Meredith Eaton (with Tate Donovan).

Other Cast and Character News
As Lucas Till revealed in a radio interview with the Canadian Todd Shapiro Show a while back, Peter Weller will have a guest spot in an upcoming episode. On April 16, TV Line posted an exclusive article about Peter Weller playing MacGyver’s “evil twin” in the season finale. His character will be a villain named Mason. As Executive Producer Peter Lenkov told TV Line:

Ultimately, all roads are going to lead to Peter Weller being this Big Bad who — and I think it was [series lead] Lucas [Till] who came up with this — is basically a bad MacGyver. He’s someone who has the same head as MacGyver, the same skills, but he uses it for nefarious purposes.

ICYMI: Lucas Till recently started filming a new movie in Montgomery, Alabama. A few BtS photos have been posted by the official Instagram account or by cast and crew members.

Back in March, Lucas had attended the Paley Fest LA alongside Peter Lenkov and the two lead actors of Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. In the newest issue of TV Guide, you can find an interview with the three leads; talking about their characters and the shows.

MacGyver in France
The ratings are more or less stable now. Episodes 3×05 and 3×06 on March 30 got 1.62 million and 1.34 million viewers. Episodes 3×07 and 3×08 a week later had 1.69 and 1.54 million viewers. Episodes 3×09 and 3×10 on April 13 made 1.59 and 1.53 million viewers; followed by Episodes 3×11 and 3×12 on April 20 with 1.65 and 1.61 million viewers.

MacGyver Manual
The MacGyver Manual/Handbook, the book project that has been in the works for the last couple of years, has now added new photos to the release date of September 17, 2019.

The updated version still has 208 pages, but appears to focus on the reboot series now, with “shout outs” to the original. It’s written by Tech Consultant Rhett Allain and contains high quality illustrations and images along with the explanations of the science behind the MacGyverisms.

MacGyver Reboot Update #80

The main cast wrapped Season 3 on March 21. Luckily, we still have 4 more episodes to enjoy on TV.

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episode 3×18
Since CBS had opted to pre-empt Episode 3×17 and because of the March Madness break, fans had to wait for a long time for this episode. On March 29, CBS released a 10-second-preview for Episode 3×18. Contrary to the Official Stills, we finally got an official glimpse of Michael Des Barres’ guest spot as Helman.

MDB had continued to post a few BtS photos every now and then. He uploaded a BtS photo with David Dastmalchian‘s Murdoc on March 31st. David uploaded a photo of him with Lucas Till and with his stunt double on April 2nd. Again, CBS didn’t bother with Sneak Peeks. At least, they posted a few BtS photos.

Let’s take a look at the recent ratings. To recap: Episode 3×17 had 5.623 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.6. In the +7 Days Ratings, it added another 1.655 million viewers (+29%), reaching a total of 7.295 million viewers with a demo of 0.98 (+54%).

About the Season 3 Ratings
At the moment, the MacGyver Reboot has an average of 6.214 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.71. Compared to the 24 scripted shows on CBS, the Reboot is at rank 21 in demo and at rank 14 in audience numbers. Comparing to last season, Season 3 lost about 14% in demo and about 0.61 million viewers or roughly 10% in live audience numbers.

Episode 3×19: Friends + Enemies + Border (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Let’s take a look at some other CBS crime-action shows. Magnum PI closed their first season at 5.992 million live-viewers per episode with a 0.89 demo-rating. They’ve been already confirmed for a 2nd season a while ago.

There still hasn’t been any official news yet about MacGyver, SEAL Team or SWAT being renewed. SEAL Team is at 5.241 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.79 on average. Compared to last year, they lost about 21% in both demo ratings and audience numbers. SEAL Team airs in a new timeslot after a 4-weeks-hiatus; losing quite a bit in the ratings departement lately. SWAT is at 5.337 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.79, ending the season on May 16. It lost about 16% in demo ratings and 9% in audience numbers compared to last year.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×20 to 3×22
The Season 3 Finale of MacGyver will air on May 10. Including today, we have 4 more episodes to enjoy. Let’s do a short recap of all the information we have gathered so far for the remaining episodes:

Episode 3×20: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (Official Still via CBS)

They continued filming some inserts and additional footage; closing the office on March 28. Interestingly, they had another Casting Call for a photo double for Justin Hires. Tristin May’s photo double Jordan has also been on set again. Executive Producer Peter Lenkov is still editing since Tristin did ADR in the studio for Episode 3×20 yesterday, so post-production is continuing for a few more weeks.

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
As Lucas Till revealed in a radio interview with the Canadian Todd Shapiro Show, Peter Weller will have a guest spot in an upcoming episode. Emerson Brooks (as Charlie Robinson), Lance Gross (as Billy Colton), Sheryl Lee Ralph (as Mama Colton) and Brendan Hines (as Matty’s ex-husband Ethan) have been on set for the upcoming episodes.

In other news, Lucas recently started filming a new movie in Montgomery, Alabama. Both his brother Nick and friend Michael Aaron Millegan visited him on set. Lucas cut his hair for the role, meaning MacGyver will have shorter hair next season.

MacGyver in France
French channel M6 started Season 3 on March 16. They changed the timeslot from Fridays (Seasons 1 and 2) to Saturdays; airing two episodes of Season 3 and then one or two episodes of S2 afterwards.

Sadly, the viewers still don’t appreciate the new timeslot and the ratings keep falling. Episodes 3×03 and 3×04 on March 23 had 1.70 and 1.47 million viewers. Episodes 3×05 and 3×06 on March 30 got 1.62 million and 1.34 million viewers.

In an old interview just released, Lucas Till talked about filming the 3rd season, the differences of filming Seasons 1 and 2 and being able to spend more time with his family.
