What you need to know about Episode 5×10 (MAC503)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×10 (Diamond + Quake + Carbon + Comms + Tower). It was written by the two Andrews (Andrew Karlsruher and Andrew Klein) and directed by Michael Martinez. We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on February 16.

In case you need a refresher, here’s the synopsis:

While on a mission to hunt down a Codex lead, Mac and the team discover Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) hacked their comms and has recorded them for months. Now, Mac and the team must stop Murdoc, who is working with Andrews (Joe Pantoliano), as they plot to kill thousands and reveal each Phoenix member’s most-guarded secrets.

We got 16 Official Stills on February 25; all of them featuring the guest stars alongside Mac, Riley and Desi. You can find 14 tagged Stills on Getty Images. Yesterday, they added 3 Sneak Peeks while TV Insider provided an exclusive, additional Sneak Peek today.

Justin Hires hinted at him being on set tonight, so we don’t know yet if any cast members will join in on the live-tweeting.

What you need to know about Episode 5×11 (MAC505)
Next week is the premiere of Episode 5×11 (C8H7ClO + Nano-Trackers + Resistance + Maldives + Mind Games). The episode was written by Josh Brown and Teresa Huang and directed by David Straiton. We got the Press Release with the first Official Still on February 18. Here’s the synopsis:

Mac and Riley head overseas together to prevent a governmental collapse and inadvertently inhale new deadly microscopic technology.

In this episode, we’ll see the first appearance of Alexandra Grey as a recurring Phoenix engineer named Parker. CBS realeased 5 Official Stills yesterday; all of them featuring Mac and Riley in the woods. Sadly, they’re not available in good quality yet.

Episode 5×11: C8H7ClO + Nano-Trackers + Resistance + Maldives + Mind Games (via CBS)

After this episode, there’s a break due to March Madness; followed by a rerun of Episode 4×03 (Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck) on March 26.

About the Rerun of Episode 4×11
Last Friday, we got a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds). It had 3.356 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.34, which is the third-highest audience number of all Season 4 Reruns so far. Contrary to the rerun of Episode 4×04, I didn’t see any writers joining in on the live-tweeting or posting new BtS material.

BtS photo of Episode 4×11: Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds (via Meredith Eaton)

After the rerun of Episode 4×03, they might start with Reruns of Season 5 episodes unless they put a Summer Show on the Friday 8pm schedule. CBS has two drama shows left without a premiere date yet (Evil and Blood + Treasure), but they’ve never aired on Fridays so far.

Season 5 Overview
I sorted the rest of the upcoming episodes by production number. The infos were either provided by CBS, by a little birdie and the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

Script Title Page of Episode 5×13 (via Fabio Massimo Bonini)

Remember that episode titles and the episode order are not definite until an official Press Release by CBS.

  • 5×12 (MAC506): Royalty + Marriage + Vivaah Sanskar + Zinc + Henna (April 2)
Directed by Anne Renton, presumed guest appearance by Camilla Arfwedson
  • 5×13 (MAC507): Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer (tbd)
Written by Alessia Costantini and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by Katie Eastridge
  • 5×14 (MAC508): H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (tbd)
Directed by Christine Swanson, guest appearances by Ernie Hudson and Wendy Raquel Robinson
  • 5×15 (MAC509): Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (tbd)

They seem to be a bit behind with the schedule. As far as we know, they started filming the Season Finale Episode today, so they will probably wrap up the season in about two or three weeks.

Working on Episode MAC508 and beyond
To Recap: Production for Episode 5×08 started around February 18. In the last few weeks, they filmed at a construction factory and at the cabin near the lake. Tristin Mays showed us her outfit as Artemis37. Sarah Downer confirmed in a tweet that we’ll get to see Henry Ian Cusick in a kilt.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Ernie Hudson)

On February 26, Justin Hires posted a BtS photo with “his” parents. Bozer’s “father” Ernie Hudson tweeted an additional group photo two days later. Filming continued on March 1, but we didn’t get much BtS material this week. On March 2nd, Levy Tran posted an Instagram Story of her and Lucas Till dancing outside in construction workers gear.

Yesterday, Tristin posted a BtS video of the crew cleaning up after filming inside a church. This is probably footage from an earlier episode; maybe even the one airing tonight (judging by her hairstyle). Guest Star Fabio Massimo Bonini revealed that he will play an Italian thug named Franco Scuro.

For Costume Fridays, Lucas dressed up as a gold digger.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
On March 3, the Brevard Talent Group posted congratulations to Tom Nowicki for booking a recurring guest role. We don’t have any information yet which character he will be playing or in what capacity. There were no casting calls last week.

In February, the MacGyver Reboot made Rank 14 on the list of most popular shows on SpoilerTV; one rank lower than in January.

Lucas Till will take part in a virtual relay to New Orleans for Shirts Across America on March 27. If you want to join, you can find all important info here.

ICYMI, here’s a short overview of recent news:

  • On February 24, Gula Tech Adventures released a video interview with Lucas Till, Tristin Mays and director/producer David Straiton recarding cyber security.
  • The official CBS Store for the Reboot has finally been “re-opened”.
  • Production Designer John Mott posted new/old Stills of the Unaired MacGyver Pilot; filmed back in April 2016.
  • Lucas’ movie Son of the South is still available on demand and in selected theaters. Check the official website for more info. On Amazon US, the DVD and BluRay are listed with a release date of April 6.

MacGyver Reboot Update #137

No new episode tonight. But hey, better a rerun than no episode, right? Especially if we already know the next one has so much potential to become a fan favorite.

About Episode 5×09 (MAC420/504)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×09 (Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt). CBS released 17 Official Stills and 4 Sneak Peeks beforehand.

We got a new BtS photo of Lucas Till before the episode aired. Afterwards, Production Designer Danny Davila posted more BtS material; e.g. a screenshot of the storyboard or a video of building the mine shaft. The next day, we got several BtS photos by Tristin Mays’ Stand-In Jordan Heir and a short video clip of the window stunt by Courtney Chen (stunt double for Levy Tran).

Episode 5×09: Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (via CBS)

Remember that this was the “Frankenstein” episode; partially filmed almost a year apart. Danny Davila revealed that the script has been adjusted during the filming break; adding the mine shaft mainly that Lucas didn’t have to film cliff scenes for two days out in freezing temperatures. Additionally, you can find some scenes done by Storyboard Artist Jasmine Alexia here.

On February 23, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyverisms.

Storyboard Excerpt for Episode 5×09 (via Jasmine Alexia)

To recap: Episode 5×08 got an audience of 4.728 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.50; making it the episode with the lowest audience numbers this season so far. Episode 5×09 had 4.958 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.57; beating Magnum PI in the demo-group of 18-49-year-olds.

Compared to the other scripted CBS shows (23 in total at the moment), it places Rank 14 in average live-viewers per episode and Rank 12 in average demo.

Episode 5×09: Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (via Jordan Heir)

Several of the writers plus Showrunner Monica Macer had joined the live-tweeting. With about 578 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide. We had more tweets than for #MagnumPI (about 184 estimated tweets per hour) or for #BlueBloods (about 34 only due to the episode being a repeat). Overall, the episode was well-received on social media.

What you need to know about Episode 5×10 (MAC503)
Tonight is a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds). Next week, we’ll get the premiere of Episode 5×10 (Diamond + Quake + Carbon + Comms + Tower). It was written by the two Andrews (Andrew Karlsruher and Andrew Klein) and directed by Michael Martinez.

CBS posted the Press Release with a First Official Still on February 16. ICYMI, here’s the synopsis:

While on a mission to hunt down a Codex lead, Mac and the team discover Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) hacked their comms and has recorded them for months. Now, Mac and the team must stop Murdoc, who is working with Andrews (Joe Pantoliano), as they plot to kill thousands and reveal each Phoenix member’s most-guarded secrets.

We got 16 Official Stills yesterday; all of them featuring the guest stars alongside Mac, Riley and Desi. The Stills haven been released in HD quality yet, but we should get a preview tonight (after the rerun of 4×11).

What you need to know about Episode 5×11 (MAC505)
On March 12 is the premiere of Episode 5×11 (C8H7ClO + Nano-Trackers + Resistance + Maldives + Mind Games). It was written by Josh Brown and Teresa Huang and directed by David Straiton.

We got the Press Release with the first Official Still on February 18. Here’s the synopsis:

Mac and Riley head overseas together to prevent a governmental collapse and inadvertently inhale new deadly microscopic technology.

After Episode 5×11, there’s a break due to March Madness. We should get Episode 5×12 on March 26.

Season 5 Overview
I sorted the rest of the upcoming episodes without an official press release yet by production number. The infos were either provided by CBS, by a little birdie and the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

Episode 5×09: Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (via CBS)

Because the filming schedule seems to be all over the place, it’s likely that there are some mistakes in my overview:

  • 5×12 (MAC506): presumably titled Royalty + Marriage + Vivaah Sanskar + Zinc + Henna (tbd)
Directed by Anne Renton, presumed guest appearance by Camilla Arfwedson
  • 5×13 (MAC507): presumably titled Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer (tbd)
  • 5×14 (MAC508): presumably titled H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins (tbd)
  • 5×15 (MAC509): presumably titled Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (tbd)

We don’t know if they’re still on time with the schedule. As far as we know, filming is planned to be wrapped next month.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Meredith Eaton)

Working on Episode MAC508 and beyond
To Recap: It’s been harder to follow what’s going on behind the scenes. I’m assuming they have been filming MAC505 to 507 in parallel. I didn’t see any new BtS material between February 9 and February 21 (besides location scouting).

Production for Episode 5×08 supposedly started around February 18. They filmed at a construction factory which houses a Transformer and at the cabin near the lake (seen in Episode 4×08). Tristin Mays showed us her outfit as Artemis37. For Dress-Up-Friday, Lucas appeared in a Watchmen costume today.

Tristin Mays on set of Season 5

Sarah Downer confirmed in a tweet that the photo of Henry Ian Cusick in a kilt was taken during a fitting for the show; stating that we would see two kilt outfits.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
We got several Casting Calls via Central Casting Georgia in the last few weeks. They’ve been looking for a 9-year-old blonde boy to play a young Mac (presumably for the Mission City Episode 5×14), for a female with some form of arm or hand prosthesis (who looks as though they might be an ex soldier), for Physical Therapists, for High End Security Guards , for Scientists and Lab Techs (who look like they work for a very high end pharmaceutical company), for City Pedestrians, for Male Loading Dock Workers, for Italian Police Officers and for Forensic Techs.

Tristin Mays for Gula Tech Adventures (Screenshot)

On February 19, TVLine revealed that Bozer’s parents have been cast, also revealing parts of the storyline for Episode 5×14:

(…) Ernie Hudson and Wendy Raquel Robinson will guest-star as the aforementioned Milton and Lauretta Bozer, parents of Justin Hires’ Wilt. In the episode, Mac and Desi go with Bozer back home when his mother’s best friend dies in a tragic accident. But soon after arriving there, they realize that the woman’s death may have been murder, and the city’s contaminated water supply holds the key to finding the killer.

(via TVLine)

ICYMI: Deadline confirmed on February 18 that Alexandra Grey will have a recurring role. Starting with Episode 5×11, she will play Parker, a transgender female Phoenix engineer.

Lucas Till for Gula Tech Adventures (Screenshot)

On February 24, Gula Tech Adventures released an video interview with Lucas Till, Tristin Mays and director/producer David Straiton. They talked about cyber security, about Tristin pulling a Riley and finding the boys hacking her social media accounts and how modern technology helped filming during the pandemic.

ICYMI: The official CBS Store for the Reboot has finally been “re-opened” on February 21; adding new merch items available to order. Production Designer John Mott posted new/old Stills of the Unaired MacGyver Pilot; filmed back in April 2016.

New Reboot Merch available (via CBS)

Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South is still available on demand and in selected theaters and was put onto the list of 366 movies eligible for a Best Picture Nomination for the Academy Awards (aka Oscars). Check the official website for a list of theatres and digital platforms. On Amazon US, the DVD and BluRay are listed with a release date of April 6.

MacGyver Reboot Update #136

A new episode airs tonight – the last of the “old” episodes. It’s some sort of a Frankenstein episode; partially filmed about a year ago for Season 4.

About Episode 5×08 (MAC418)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×08 (SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini). CBS released 16 Official Stills and 5 Sneak Peeks beforehand. There was also an interview with Henry Ian Cusick for Parade Magazine.

We got some new BtS photos before and while the episode aired; e.g. by guest star Jordan Trovillion, by Henry Ian Cusick (with co-star Jorge Garcia) or director Yangzom Brauen.

Episode 5×08: SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (via Henry Ian Cusick)

On February 13, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyver Science. We got some additional BtS photos later; e.g. by Guest Star Sunny Mabrey with Jorge Garcia or by Daniel O’Callaghan with Levy Tran.

To recap: Episode 5×07 had 5.163 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.52 in the group of 18-49 year olds. Episode 5×08 got an audience of 4.728 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.50; making it the episode with the lowest audience numbers this season so far.

Compared to the other scripted CBS shows (23 in total at the moment), it places Rank 14 in average live-viewers per episode and Rank 13 in average demo. (Note that recently cancelled NCIS: New Orleans is at Rank 15 for both categories.)

Several of the writers, Showrunner Monica Macer and Lucas Till had joined the live-tweeting. With about 618 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide, but we had more tweets than for #MagnumPI (about 189 estimated tweets per hour) or for #BlueBloods (about 523). Overall, the episode was well-received on social media.

What you need to know about Episode 5×09 (MAC420/504)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×09 (Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt); written by Rob Pearlstein and directed by Christine Moore (who also directed Episode 1×19: Compass).

This episode was partially filmed with production number MAC420 last year. They were in the middle of filming when being shut down due to the pandemic on March 13. They finished shooting the remaining scenes this January. Since it got a new production number (MAC504), it’s possible they added some script revisions.

It will be interesting to try guessing which scenes have been filmed pre- or post-pandemic hiatus.

Episode 5×09: Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (via What2Vue)

We got a Press Release on February 8. In case you need a refresher, here’s the synopsis:

When Mac and the team are unable to prevent Department of Defense intel from falling into Codex’s hands, Mac must scale a vertical cliff using only gear he can cobble together himself to prevent the info’s transmission.

We got 8 Official Stills last Friday, all of them featuring MacGyver on and inside a rock formation. They added an additional batch of 9 Stills yesterday; featuring MacGyver, Riley and Desi. You can find all 8 untagged Stills from the first batch on Seat42F.

Episode 5×08: SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (via Daniel O’Callaghan)

What you need to know about Episode 5×10 (MAC503)
Next week, there’s a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds). On March 5, we’ll get the premiere of Episode 5×10 (Diamond + Quake + Carbon + Comms + Tower). CBS posted the Press Release with a First Official Still on February 16. Here’s the synopsis:

Now, Mac and the team must stop Murdoc, who is working with Andrews (Joe Pantoliano), as they plot to kill thousands and reveal each Phoenix member’s most-guarded secrets.

Fans were elated to hear about Murdoc finally coming back after waiting longer than intended – remember the disappointment of Murdoc having been written out of Episode 5×03 (MAC501); presumably due to pandemic-related issues?

  • 5×15 (MAC509): tba

We don’t know if they’re still on time with the schedule. As far as we know, filming was planned to be wrapped by March, but that could still change.

Working on Episode MAC506 and beyond
To Recap: It’s been harder to follow what’s going on behind the scenes. I’m assuming they have been filming MAC505 to 507 in parallel. Filming locations in the last few weeks included the Hindu Temple of Atlanta to film an Indian wedding. As guest stars, we had Alexandra Grey, Camilla Arfwedson (Sofia) and Chris Lindsay.

Filming on February 8 involved a helicopter and green screen. Posts on February 10 hinted at cast and crew having a “dark” day. In fact, I haven’t seen any new BtS material since February 9 (although some of the crew posted photos from earlier filming days). Although there has been no official news about production being shut down or put on hiatus, this might have been the case.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
On Tuesday, we got two new Casting Calls via Central Casting Georgia: One for a 9-year-old blonde boy that resembles one of the actors and one for a person with some form of a prosthesis (e.g. arm, hand, leg or foot).

Beth Stein Agency congratulated their client Melanie Minichino for booking a guest spot in an upcoming episode. Also, Deadline confirmed my suspicion that Alexandra Grey will have a recurring role. According to the article, she plays Parker, a transgender female Phoenix engineer providing critical assistance to Team Phoenix. Her episodes will start airing on March 12 (meaning Episode 5×11).

Alexandra Grey on MacGyver (CBS via Deadline)

I noticed that the MacGyver Writers Twitter Account started following OG Murdoc Michael Des Barres just a few weeks ago, so it’s possible there might be something in the works as well.

ICYMI: CBS announced that they will hold a virtual Upfronts event on May 19. We should know before that date if the show is renewed for another season or cancelled. Although NCIS: New Orleans was just cancelled despite having similar ratings, MacGyver has the advantage of not being as expensive yet as the veteran shows. Of course, there’s also the possibility of the Reboot being pushed to midseason again despite getting renewed to make room for one of the new shows in development (e.g. CSI: Vegas or NCIS: Hawaii).

Official Still for Son of the South (via Vertical Entertainment)

Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South is still available on demand and in selected theaters. On the official website, you can find a list of theatres and digital platforms. On Amazon US, the DVD and BluRay are listed with a release date of April 6.

The weighted IMDb-Rating is back up to 5.3; holding an arithmetic mean of 6.7 and a median of 7 (meaning that 50% of the voters rated the movie 7 and higher). On Rotten Tomatoes, the Audience Score is at 88% (despite the Tomatometer being at 45%). If you liked the movie, leave a review. A little positive buzz around the lead actor on MacGyver can’t hurt; especially when waiting on a Season 6 renewal.

MacGyver Reboot Update #135

A new episode airs tonight – the second-last of the “old” episodes filmed for Season 4. Who’s ready for a mini-crossover?

About Episode 5×07 (MAC417)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×07 (Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage). CBS released 17 Official Stills and 4 Sneak Peeks beforehand.

We got new BtS photos and videos before and while the episode aired; e.g. a group photo and several videos of Lucas getting to know Victor the Bull Snake (by guest star Aly Michalka aka Frankie) plus many BtS photos and videos while filming in the “snake lab” (via snake handler Blake Welch who brought Mimosa to set).

Episode 5×07: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (via Aly Michalka)

Writer Josh Brown tweeted snake facts, a BtS photo of the screen test with Victor and some insights to the episode; e.g. the backstory they wrote up for Frankie (and what she’s been up to in the last 4 years). Stunt Double Alex Hill revealed that it hadn’t just been archive footage, but that they did milk venom from a few timber rattlesnakes for the necessary shot.

On February 8, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyverisms.

To recap: Episode 5×06 had 4.994 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.57 in the group of 18-49 year olds. In the Live +3 Days Ratings, it added 0.982 million viewers (+19.66%) and 0.186 in demo (+32.90%); reaching a total of 5.976 million viewers and 0.75 in demo.

Episode 5×07: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (via Blake Welch)

Episode 5×07 did a bit better; reaching an audience of 5.163 million live-viewers. While the demo was lower with 0.52, it was slightly better than the demo for both Magnum PI and Blue Bloods. Compared to the other scripted CBS shows (22 in total at the moment), it places Rank 14 in average live-viewers per episode and Rank 12 in average demo.

Several of the writers plus Showrunner Monica Macer joined the live-tweeting. With about 664 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide, but we had more tweets than for #MagnumPI (about 209 estimated tweets per hour) or for #BlueBloods (about 215). Overall, the episode was well-received on social media.

What you need to know about Episode 5×08 (MAC418)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×08 (SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini). It was written by Cindy Appel and directed by Yangzom Brauen. This is the episode filmed with production number MAC418 (SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini) back in February last yar.

We got the Press Release on January 21 plus a little snippet in the current issue of TV Guide Magazine about a week later. ICYMI, Here’s the synopsis:

Mac and team rush to help when Matty’s former mentor, Ian Cain (Robert Patrick), and his embassy staff come down with a deadly, mysterious illness. Also, Taylor and Bozer work with Jerry Ortega (“Hawaii Five-0’s” Jorge Garcia) to infiltrate a Codex cell.

On February 2, we got 16 Official Stills via the CBS Press Site. 10 of them are tagged, but available on Getty Images. You can find all untagged Stills on Seat42F.

Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano

There is a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds) scheduled for February 26.

Remember that episode titles and their order are not definite until an official Press Release. I sorted the upcoming, newly filmed episodes by production number. Because the filming schedule seems to be all over the place (more about that further down), it’s very likely that there are several mistakes and errors:

  • 5×11 (MAC505): tba
Written by Josh Brown, directed by David Straiton
  • 5×12 (MAC506): tba
Presumably written by Teresa Huang, presumed guest appearance by Camilla Arfwedson
  • 5×13 (MAC507): presumably titled Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer
  • 5×14 (MAC508): tba
  • 5×15 (MAC509): tba

We don’t know much about these episodes or if they’re still on time with the schedule. As far as we know, filming was planned to be wrapped by March, but that could still change.

Working on Episode MAC505 and beyond
To Recap: It’s been harder to follow what’s going on behind the scenes. For now, I’m assuming they have been filming MAC505 to 507 in parallel. Filming locations in the last few weeks included the Phoenix Jet, Sweetwater Creek State Park, a church and the Hindu Temple of Atlanta. As guest stars, we had Alexandra Grey, Camilla Arfwedson (Sofia) and a few lab rats on set. We also got to see Lucas Till as the plague doctor and Levy Tran dressed as a nun.

Adding a new Friday routine (to make up for Tie Friday, maybe?), Lucas continued dressing up last week (this time as the Mandalorian). It seems that as soon as Sarah Downer has left (for a well-deserved rest during the last weeks of her pregnancy), they already lost partial control of the costume departement.

The Mandalorian Shenanigans during a break of filming for Season 5 (via Marina Coria)

They had another night shoot at the Hindu Temple on February 5; the BtS material hinting at filming an Indian Wedding scene with dancing. Filming on Monday (February 8) started once again very early; with crew posting the first photos around 3am. They set up a scene involving a helicopter and green screen. The next day, Showrunner Monica Macer posted a photo of her on set with Meredith Eaton (presumably back in LA).

Posts for Wednesday hinted at cast and crew having a “dark” day on set; with some of the crew members visiting the High Art Museum in Atlanta. It’s not clear yet if having the day off was a planned or unplanned event. For all I know, there’s no BtS material for either Wednesday nor Thursday.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
Last Friday, we got a new Casting Call via Central Casting Georgia for Non-American Cars. Additionally, Beth Stein Agency congratulated their client Melanie Minichino for booking a guest spot in an upcoming episode.

This week, CBS announced that they will hold a virtual Upfronts event on May 19. We should know before that date if the show will be renewed.

Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South is available on demand and in selected theaters. On the official movie website, you can find a list of theatres and VOD and Digital Platforms. Last week, Lucas did several short interviews together with co-star Lex Scott Davis (e.g. for AM FM Magazine, EurWeb or BackstageOL).

Official Still for Son of the South (via Vertical Entertainment)

Reviews are varied. The weighted IMDb-Rating plummeted from 7.9 down to a 4.3 just a day after the release, but is back up to 5.0; holding an arithmetic mean of 6.7 and a median of 8 (meaning that 50% of the voters rated the movie 8 and higher).

MacGyver Reboot Update #134

A new episode airs tonight – another one of the “old” episodes filmed for Season 4. Who’s also happy to see Frankie again?

About Episode 5×06 (MAC502)
Two weeks ago was the premiere of Episode 5×06 (Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance). During the premiere, writer Stephanie Hicks tweeted that it had been very cathartic to write out their frustrations and fears surrounding quarantine and that she had been in the middle of re-planning her wedding when writing the script.

CBS released 10 Official Stills and a whopping number of 5 Sneak Peeks beforehand – plus the two clips that should have been uploaded after the episode aired (that they deleted half a day later after realizing their mistake).

Episode 5×06: Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (CBS via TV Insider)

The exclusive Sneak Peek article provided by TV Insider included a short interview with Henry Ian Cusick. He talked a bit about the sword-fighting scene:

(…) Because of COVID, it just takes up a lot more time [to shoot]. You’re testing and cleaning and resetting and everything just takes a lot of time with filming. They wrote it and the director said, “We’re going to cut it because it’s just going to take up too much.” We kind of fought for it and I’m so glad that that sword fight was back in. It just makes it a little bit more sexy, and Camilla’s character is aristocratic so it brings that element to it.

(via TV Insider)

We got a few BtS videos by Stephanie Hicks when the episode aired. Extra Brandon Bell stated on Facebook that he had fun working with he cast. On January 24, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyverisms. A day later, Joshua Romeo posted a BtS video of the escalator stunt in the mall.

Episode 5×06: Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (Nathan Bolster/CBS via Seat42F)

To recap: Episode 5×05 made 4.989 million live-viewers with a 0.55 in demo. Episode 5×06 had similar, but slightly better ratings with 4.994 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.57 in the group of 18-49 year olds. In the Live +3 Days Ratings, it added 0.982 million viewers (+19.66%) and 0.186 in demo (+32.90%); reaching a total of 5.976 million viewers and 0.75 in demo.

Compared to the other scripted CBS shows (21 in total at the moment), it places Rank 13 in average live-viewers per episode and Rank 11 in average demo.

Episode 5×07: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (Mark Hill/CBS via What2Vue)

Several of the writers plus Lucas Till joined the live-tweeting. According to Henry Ian Cusick, he was still filming when the episode aired. With about 2200 estimated tweets per hour, it still wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide, but it was a lot more tweets than for #MagnumPI (about 300 estimated tweets per hour) or for #BlueBloods (about 819). Overall, the episode was very well-received on social media.

About the Rerun of Episode 4×04
Last Friday, we got a rerun of Episode 4×04 (Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin). It was nice to see that the writers joined in on the live-tweeting; even posting new BtS material (e.g. a closer look at the egg drop apparatus or the bomb, renderings for scenes and a video of the prop crew testing the “plank walk”).

Closer look at the egg drop apparatus used in Episode 4×04 (via MacGyver Writers)

The episode had 3.552 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3, which is the highest live-audience number for all Season 4 reruns so far.

What you need to know about Episode 5×07 (MAC417)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×07 (Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage). It was written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher. It was directed by David Straiton; filmed with production number MAC417 in February last year.

We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on January 19; alongside the confirmation that we will see another guest appearance by Aly Michalka as Frankie.

Episode 5×07: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (Mark Hill/CBS via Getty Images)

ICYMI, here’s the synopsis:

The secret experimental cancer treatment Mac’s developing with a friend is discovered when culprits ransack their lab, kidnap Mac’s partner and plan to use the research to create a powerful new nerve agent.

On January 21, CBS relased 17 Stills on their press site. 11 tagged Stills are up on Getty Images; 16 untagged Stills are available on What2Vue. For once, we didn’t have to wait long for the Sneak Peeks since CBS was nice enough to release four of them by Monday already.

What you need to know about Episode 5×08 (MAC418)
Next week is the premiere of Episode 5×08 (SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini). It was written by Cindy Appel and directed by Yangzom Brauen (who already directed Episode 4×10). This is the episode filmed with production number MAC418 (SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini) back in February last yar.

Episode 5×08: SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (via Jorge Garcia)

We got the Press Release on January 21. Here’s the synopsis:

Mac and team rush to help when Matty’s former mentor, Ian Cain (Robert Patrick), and his embassy staff come down with a deadly, mysterious illness. Also, Taylor and Bozer work with Jerry Ortega (“Hawaii Five-0’s” Jorge Garcia) to infiltrate a Codex cell.

On Tuesday, we got 16 Official Stills via the CBS Press Site; all of them featuring MacGyver and Desi during a shoot-out and meeting some Hazmat Guys. No untagged Stills have been released yet, but the episode got a little snippet in the current issue of TV Guide Magazine.

Season 5 Overview
Here’s an overview of the upcoming Season 5 episodes. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West, by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

  • 5×07 (MAC417): Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (February 5)
Written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by David Straiton
  • 5×08 (MAC418): SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (February 12)
Written by Cindy Appel, directed by Yangzom Brauen
  • 5×09 (MAC420/504): Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (February 19)
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore

There is a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds) scheduled for February 26.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Robert Maxfield)

Remember that episode titles and the episode order are not definite until an official Press Release by CBS. I sorted the upcoming, newly filmed episodes by production number:

  • 5×10 (MAC503): tba
Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano
  • 5×11 (MAC505): tba
    Presumably written by Teresa Huang
  • 5×12 (MAC506): tba
Presumed guest appearance by Camilla Arfwedson

We don’t know much about these episodes or if they’re still on time with the schedule. There have been filming restrictions in California and LA recently, so it’s safe to assume that the schedule for the LA Unit (where Meredith Eaton has been filming) was affected as well.

A little birdie told me that one of the upcoming episodes is titled “barn find + oil slick + la punzonatura + lab rats + tachometer”. Because the filming schedule seems to be all over the place (more about that further down), I can’t yet determine the definite episode number, though.

Working on Episode MAC505 and beyond
To Recap: On January 14, Esther Elise Johnson posted that they had wrapped the episode with production number MAC504. Guest star Alexandra Grey arrived in Atlanta on January 20, filming her first scenes for the episode with production number MAC505 the day after.

During the premiere of Episode 5×06, the writers had revealed that Russ Taylors love interest Sofia will return. Filming resumed January 25 with Camilla Arfwedson posting a photo from inside her trailer. They had white lab rats in a maze on set on January 27. The next day, they filmed inside the Phoenix Jet.

Plague Doctor Shenanigans during a break of filming for Season 5 (via Lucas Till)

On January 24 and 27, Christopher Jon Duddy uploaded a few photos while location scouting (the Hindu Temple of Atlanta and an abandoned church). Note that back in the promo videos for Season 4, there was a bleeped out spoiler video teasing us about people dying and someone getting married. Filming inside the church continued on January 29. We got to see Lucas Till as the plague doctor and Levy Tran dressed as a nun, so I’m already curious what the episode is about.

Filming resumed very early on Monday morning (February 1st), with crew members posting the first Instagram photos at 3.30am. The crew set up at Sweetwater Creek State Park; filming scenes with bad guys on trucks and a stunt person on a bike. Both Lucas Till and Tristin Mays were seen on set; freezing with temperatures of 35°F. According to First Assistant Director Esther Elise Johnson, it was the last day of filming for MAC505.

BtS Photo of Season 5 (via Robert Maxfield)

Filming on February 2nd took place at the Hindu Tempel of Atlanta and continued at the same location for two days; including a night shoot. Camilla Arfwedson posted a photo of her on set today; and it looks like her character Sofia is dressed perfectly for a gala event; matching Lucas Till wearing the Pilot Episode suit yesterday. So, who’s getting married?

Judging by clothes and hairstyles plus the change in filming days and the long hours lately, I’ve been wondering if they’ve been filming episodes in parallel. It’s been harder to follow what’s going on behind the scenes; with filming of MAC505 taking a lot longer than the earlier episodes they filmed so far this year. For now, I’m assuming they have been filming 505 and 506 in parallel and maybe even scenes for 507 already.

Filming at the Hindu Temple of Atlanta (via David Allen)

But judging by BtS material, cast and crew are still enjoying themselves. After several months, Justin Hires uploaded another BtS photo of Bozer inside Phoenix. Tristin Mays uploaded two longer videos this week; one of them showing how she transforms herself into Riley Davis in the early morning (including doing her own hair and make-up plus getting a nasal swab) and another one featuring the Junebug Challenge Dance Off.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
The writers already teased us about it, but TV Line confirmed that we will see Riley’s hacker persona back in an upcoming episode; exploring an opportunity to groom young female hackers in similar situations as Riley in the Pilot Episode.

Official Still for Son of the South (via Vertical Entertainment)

Starting todady, Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South is available on demand and in selected theaters. Lucas did several short interviews together with Lex Scott Davis (e.g. for AM FM Magazine, ScreenRant or BackstageOL) on the weekend to promote the premiere. On the official movie website, you can find a list of theatres and of VOD and Digital Platforms (with a direct link).

Reviews are ranging from scathing to praising (e.g. Variety) and everything in between (e.g. Chicago Sun Time). The IMDb-Rating has plummeted from 7.9 this morning to a 4.4 as I’m writing up this blog post, but it’s still early (with only 106 votes) and it actually holds a median of 9.5. (Note: the median is the value separating the higher half from the lower half; meaning that 50% of the voters rated the movie 9.5 and higher).

Lucas Till doing interviews for Son of the South (Screenshot via AM FM Magazine)

According to IssueWire, the movie has qualified for an Official Oscars submission and is “in consideration”. There’s a dozen of award circuit nominations announced within the next few months, so lets hope Son of the South gets some love by the industry.

For German speaking fans: There’s a German distributor (Busch Media Group), but no release date for German-speaking regions yet.

MacGyver Reboot Update #132

A new episode airs tonight – the one that fans have been looking for for almost a year, but are dreading at the same time.

Episode 5×05: Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (via CBS)

About Episode 5×04 (MAC419)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×04 (Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason). It was written by Justin Lisson and Sophia Lopez and directed by Peter Weller; filmed with production number MAC419 (Banh Bao + Drill + Burner + Mason). They released 9 Official Stills and 3 Sneak Peeks beforehand.

We got several new/old BtS photos and Instagram stories just before and during the episode aired; e.g. by Corey Jung (with Ben Wang), by Gloria Tsai or by the official MacGyverCBS account.

Episode 5×04: Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (via Corey Jung)

Corey Jung added a few more BtS photos and videos the next day. On January 12, Matthew Albright uploaded a BtS video of the window stunt. Tech Consultant Rhett Allain typed up a blog post about the MacGyverisms; adding several videos.

Episode 5×04 had 5.173 million live-viewers and a 0.6 demo rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. This episode had the best ratings of all Season 5 episodes so far. Compared to the other CBS scripted shows (21 in total), it places Rank 12 in average demo and Rank 13 in average live-viewers per episode.

Episode 5×04: Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (via CBS)

Several of the writers joined the live-tweeting, but again none of the main cast besides Henry Ian Cusick. With about 380 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend; unlike #BlueBloods with about 2300 tweets per hour (trending Ranks 13 and 14 US-wide for about two hours). For comparison: #MagnumPI had about 84 tweets per hour.

Overall, the episode was well-received on social media. A lot of fans liked Ben Wang’s first ever TV appearence as Eli; asking if he will come back in a recurring role. It’s also the best-rated episode on IMDb at the moment.

Episode 5×05: Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (Nathan Bolster/CBS via Seat42F)

What you need to know about Episode 5×05 (MAC416)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×05 (Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO); the episode many fans have been waiting for. It was written by Jim Adler and directed by Ericson Core (who already directed Episodes 2×02, 2×22 and 4×11).

This episode was filmed with production number MAC416 (Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO) back in January and February last year. As mentioned last week, the title of this episode has been a topic often talked about within the fandom since the revelation of the script title page and the emergence of BtS photos of a military funeral and a wake in Mac’s home.

Episode 5×05: Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (via Henry Ian Cusick)

After being very patient, we finally got the Press Release and a First Still on January 11. Here’s the synopsis:

Using a cryptic postcard as their only clue, Mac and the team must solve a fallen friend’s final case and bring him justice.

Many fans still secretly hoped for a guest appearance by George Eads until the guest stars were revealed in the Press Release. CBS later released 17 Official Stills. All but two feature Mac, Desi and Russ outside; presumably chasing someone down an alley. You can find 14 tagged Stills on Getty Images and all untagged Stills on Seat42F.

Episode 5×05: Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (via Lavonda Till)

We only got the two Sneak Peeks last night; again fuelling the discussions among fans about Jack’s potential demise. As mentioned before, Lucas Till’s stepmom Lavonda Till had visited the set to watch Lucas’ dad John Mark Till filming some scenes as a background actor. She had uploaded several photos onto Facebook before she deleted the photos and locked her profile (due to fans commenting on the post).

It must have been a very special day (although both Lavonda and John already have been on set of the Lake Como scene for a guest appearance in the Pilot).

Episode 5×05: Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (via Kelita Deeter Miller)

We got some more BtS material this week; e.g. by Kelita Deeter Miller or by Henry Ian Cusick.

What you need to know about Episode 5×06 (MAC502)
While information about Episode 5×05 has been scarce, they were quick with promotion for the “Quarantine Episode” that airs next week. This is the second episode that has been filmed for Season 5.

After a first spoiler-teaser via TVLine on December 29, we got the Press Release and the First Official Still on January 4. A day later, CBS revealed in their Notes for Nerds Newsletter that MacGyver will write a song dedicated to his favorite immunologist. Yesterday, we got 10 Official Stills via the CBS Press Site.

Episode 5×06: Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (via Danielle Korman)

Some fans have been disappointed that the Official Stills didn’t show the trio doing mundane things in quarantine, but the trio plus Desi out and about tackling bad guys. We’ve only seen about a handful of BtS photos for this episode, so everyone’s very curious.

Keep in mind that due to the pandemic, it’s possible that Still Photographers (like Danielle Korman for this episode) will usually come on set when they film scenes either outside or in big, airy spaces. They might later add some screenshots as Stills. Also, as with the other “new” episode 5×03, we might get some exclusive extra material next week.

Episode 5×06: Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (via Lucas Till)

Here’s the synopsis:

During COVID-19’s first stay-at-home order, as Mac, Bozer and Riley quarantine together, they try to stop a crime in progress at their neighbor’s house. Also, Russ’ romantic fling takes on a longer and more complicated turn when they quarantine together.

  • 5×05 (MAC416): Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO (January 15)
Written by Jim Adler, directed by Ericson Core
  • 5×06 (MAC502): Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (January 22)
Written by Stephanie Hicks and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by Andrew Ahn
  • 5×07 (MAC417): Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (February 5)
Written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by David Straiton
Presumed guest appearance by Aly Michalka (Frankie)

There is a rerun of Episode 4×04 (Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin) scheduled for January 29.

BtS photo of Episode 4×04: Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin (via CBS)

Remember that episode titles and the episode order are not definite until an official Press Release by CBS. For now, I sorted the other episodes by production number:

  • (MAC418): SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini
Written by Cindy Appel, directed by Yangzom Brauen
Presumed guest appearances by Jorge Garcia and Robert Patrick
  • (MAC420): Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore
  • (MAC503): tba
Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano
  • (MAC504): tba
    Presumably written by Teresa Huang

Due to the recent Covid-19 surge, most of the LA productions extended their Holiday Hiatus. We don’t know if the LA Unit for MacGyver (where Meredith Eaton films) had been affected as well and/or if they’re still on time with the filming schedule.

BtS photo of Season 5 (via Steven Serna)

Working on Episode MAC504 and beyond
Filming for the episode with production number 504 started last Friday. At least that’s what I thought until Lucas Till posted several Insta Stories on January 11. It looks like they’re working on finishing up the episode with production number MAC420 that was in the middle of filming when production was shut down on March 13 last year.

To recap: Last week, Hussein Agamiri uploaded an Instagram Story with the crew set up for filming before a narrow, but high square with a green screen on top. This Monday, Lucas posted videos of him climbing up a fake mountain (or rather, hanging on ropes while getting instructions for another take). He’s wearing the same clothes as back for Episode MAC420. It’s not clear yet if they’re finishing up what was left or if they resorted to re-film the entire episode.

Episode MAC420: Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt (via Robert Maxfield)

Tristin Mays also posted Insta Stories from set and inside her trailer; admiring the boots and jacket she got to wear for filming. Grip Steven Serna provided a BtS photo to show us the “fly swatters” installed on the set. During the next days, they continued filming on outside locations and inside the warehouse they have been filming in and around several times before.

It was a nice surprise but also rather strange that after weeks of “radio silence”, they chose to post so much BtS material again. But I’m not going to complain; who knows when this lucky streak is over. Generally, they seem more secretive about the newly filmed episodes than the “old” ones.

On set of Season 5 (via Tristin Mays)

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
Surprisingly, we finally got a new Casting Call – the only one since November 12: Central Casting Georgia has been looking for Guards (preferably with tactical experience).

We got some prop BtS photos for Episode 5×02 as well; e.g. of the laser cutter, of the toxin vial or options for Desi’s burglar gear bag. Guest Star Mei Ritchart (Young Desi) also added a few new BtS photos for the same episode this week.

ICYMI: The trailer for Lucas’ upcoming movie Son of the South got officially released on YouTube last week. Both Movie Coverage and Movie Trailers Source as two of the accounts with the most followers have over 110’000 views so far.

Son of the South Twitter Header

It looks like Vertical Entertainment took over from Clear Horizon Entertainment to start on the promotion. On January 13, they created new accounts for Twitter and Instagram (though the old ones are still up) plus one for Facebook; presenting a new poster for the US. The movie will be available on demand and in selected theaters February 5.

So far, I haven’t heard anything about upcoming promo appearances. In a non-pandemic year, this movie would have probably hit the Film Festival circuit for several months. Sadly, we can’t expect many interviews and certainly no red carpet events, but we know from BtS material that they had done some interviews on set during filming days.

MacGyver Reboot Update #127

We finally reached another important Friday this year – the Premiere of Season 5!

Episode 5×01: Resort + Desi + Riley + Window Cleaner + Witness (via Jessie T Usher)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about Season 5 storylines by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

About the Season 5 Premiere Promo
There hasn’t been as much promo as for Season 4 – until today. Here’s an overview of what we got as promo for Season 5:

While they had used material from the first four episodes for the Season 4 Preview, they mostly used material from Episode 5×02 this time. Also, many fans weren’t too happy that the promo focused a lot on Desi, but not on the long-time-regulars like Bozer and Matty. Not to mention that it was too short anyway.

Season 5 Promo (via MacGyverCBS)

GlobalTV (Canada) also put a Season Teaser Trailer out on November 26. It only used scenes from Season 4, but focused on MacGyver instead which in my opinion worked better.

  • Character Teasers: Later, there were several teaser videos of the characters announcing countdowns. We got a teaser of Russ Taylor (2 Weeks left), a teaser of Desi (1 Week), one of Matty (5 Days), one of Bozer (3 Days), one of Riley (2 Days) and one of MacGyver (Tomorrow).

It was nice to get a few additional teasers with material from the “real” Season 5. Besides Russ, they all looked way too serious though.

Season 5 Promo (via MacGyverCBS)

While they posted the videos on Instagram, they often posted a screenshot photo on Facebook.

  • Character Posters: We got a character poster of Russ (put together with a shot from Episode 4×01), of Desi (Episode 4×07), of Matty, (taken from the portrait photoshoot they did during Season 4), of Bozer, of Riley and… none of MacGyver (at least not when writing up this post).

To me, these character posters weren’t all that interesting since they were put together with material used more than half a year ago.

  • Sneak Peeks: On Wednesday, we got 3 Sneak Peeks and the Opening Scene as an exlusive clip by ET Online. They chose a variety of clips featuring all the regular characters.

Back when I still thought they would air the “leftover” episodes of Season 4 first, I speculated in several blog posts that they might add another time jump for easier transition.

Lucas Till in a Zoom Call Interview for Good Day Sacramento

As ET Online reveals with the Opening Scene, we will indeed get another time jump – just not how I expected it. More about that further down.

  • On-Set-Interviews: Yesterday, Lucas Till did a short Zoom Call Interview on Good Day Sacramento. He was also part in the CBS Friday-Line-Up Preview; revealing that we will see even more depth of character this season. Today, local station CBS58 (Milwaukee) aired another interview; with Lucas stating that MacGyver fans are the best. There was also a short segment for CBS LA where he talked about the covid safety protocols a bit.

For the interview with CBS58, Lucas revealed that brother Nick is still his assistant; driving him to set every day and taking a daily covid test like the rest of the cast and crew.

Lucas Till in a Zoom Call Interview for The Talk

Of course, the live-video quality over Zoom Calls is not the same that we’re used to, but it’s nice that they still get a promo cycle on so many local TV stations.

  • Off-Set-Interviews: Lucas Till had an interview with Matt Weiss for CBS62 (Detroit); stating that Season 5 is the best season he ever had. He also did a longer interview with Parade that was released today. A few hours ago, Lucas did an appearance on The Talk; alongside Magnum PI lead actor Jay Hernandez.

They touched again upon a potential crossover between the two shows; with Lucas repeating that he’d really like to drive that Ferrari.

All you need to know about Episode 5×01 (MAC415)
Episode 5×01 (Resort + Desi + Riley + Window Cleaner + Witness) airing tonight is the “leftover” episode that was initially filmed with production number 415. It was written by Stephanie Hicks and directed by Avi Youabian. We got 16 Official Stills in total and 4 Sneak Peeks.

Season 5 Promo (via MacGyverCBS)

If you need a refresher, here’s the synopsis for the Season Premiere:

Mac and the team infiltrate a glamorous hotel used as an international hideout for criminals to find a woman with vital information on Codex. However, their target has a new secret identity, including a completely new face.

Lucas Till talked about the episode in his promo interviews; mentioning that it is a nod to John Wick and that he had a lot of fun filming it.

Guest Star Jean Brassard posted several new BtS photos; e.g. one photo with director Avi Youabian and one with co-star Jessie T Usher. He added some old BtS photos as well, but added statements about the actors he worked with. Jessie also posted old and new BtS photos; e.g. a group photo with Tristin Mays, Lucas Till and Henry Ian Cusick.

Director Avi Youabian posted a BtS photo of Levy Tran waiting all suited up, one of Lucas on screen, and a new/old one with Lucas, Meredith, Justin and Ian in the War Room.

Today, he added more BtS photos of Tristin with Jessie plus a few great ones of Levy in front of the bullet-riddled car; alongside a bunch of new/old Instagram Story photos.

Guest Star Eugenie Bondurant also added a few BtS photos via Instagram. Meanwhile, CBS mostly re-posted material seen before. Hopefully, we’ll see some additional BtS stuff while the episode airs. It’s nice to see everyone getting excited about watching an episode filmed almost a year ago.

What you need to know about Episode 5×02 (MAC414)
Next week, we’ll get Episode 5×02 (Thief + Painting + Auction + Viro-486 + Justice). This is the “leftover” episode that was filmed first when production restarted in January; using production number 414. It was written by Peter Lenkov and Andrew Klein and directed by Duane Clark. Here’s the synopsis:

When Taylor’s former protégé is killed while preventing a bio-weapon from falling into the wrong hands, Mac and the team must find the weapon so Desi can pull off the ultimate heist before it’s sold to a terrorist cell.

CBS released 16 Official Stills. On Getty Images, you can find 6 (tagged) Stills since the untagged Stills apparently still haven’t been released yet.

Production during a Pandemic: The LA Unit
The producers decided to slide the newly-filmed episodes between the old ones. As mentioned in my latest blog post, one reason could be that some of the main or recurring cast members can sit out for an episode without making it too obvious. I also mentioned to note that even after two weeks of production, we still didn’t know if Meredith Eaton has been back on set.

On December 1, CBS posted a BtS photo of Meredith holding the slate for the episode with production number 501; dated for November 30. Interestingly, the slate says “LA Unit”; confirming that Meredith stayed back in LA. Considering that filming for Episode 501 in Atlanta finished on November 20, I’m assuming that director David Straiton finished up in Atlanta first before travelling back to LA to direct Meredith’s scenes.

We will see if they cut the scenes together (by re-building a duplicate of the War Room and some clever editing) or if they have Matty call in via screen. It’s worth noting that they could have gone the easy way and written Matty temporarily out if they had aired the “leftover” episodes first. They could have let her film a few scenes now to explain her absence for the rest of the season (e.g. prolonged mission-absence or beaurocracy stuff in Washington) or simply explain her absence as narration.

Production during a Pandemic: The Time Jump
According to the Opening Scene clip by ET Online, 10 months and a pandemic have passed since the Season 4 Finale events. As I wrote in my Update Posts No. 101 and No. 102 back in January and February, time jumps are not a rarity in TV-Show-Land. With a time jump, the writers and producers usually get a “blank slate” to change and shape the show into whatever they wanted from the beginning.

BtS photo of Season 5 (via Justin Hires)

It’s possible that with the depart of co-showrunner Terry Matalas, now-ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov put in a short time jump of one or two months to get things “back on track” the way he wanted. But I doubt he had planned for such a big one.

The switch of showrunners in the middle of a season is difficult enough, but adding a season cut short, 6 months in between filming plus the pandemic is not easy to handle. Granted, since Episode 5×01 is set in Zurich anyway, the climate back then isn’t as different as it is now. And with the leftover episodes in between, they couldn’t do such an extensive time jump as for Season 4. But they might use the time jump to set up upcoming storylines in advance that haven’t been thought about when writing the “leftover” scripts a year ago.

Episode 5×01: Resort + Desi + Riley + Window Cleaner + Witness (via Avi Youabian)

For example, they might use the new episodes to pretend that the pandemic is almost over. Therefore, they don’t have to explain when people aren’t wearing masks in the old episodes. (Depending on where the mission is set, the pandemic might already be over in the country of the week.) Otherwise, they are again able to tweak the history of the characters and the relationships between them to get where new showrunner Monica Macer wants. They can just tell us it happened off-screen with a few flashbacks and we have to accept it.

For now, I expect some adjustements to the relationship between MacGyver and Desi and to the living situation in Mac’s house. I guess we’ll know soon if Riley moved out or not. (With so much promo material out today, I can’t cover it all, but will probably adress it in next week’s post.)

Season 5 Overview
Here’s an overview of all the information about the upcoming episodes so far. Remember that the episode titles and their order is not definite until an official Press Release by CBS. It’s difficult to predict where the new episodes will be filed in between.

Lucas Till in a Zoom Call Interview for CBS LA

For now, the order of the other upcoming episodes is just an assumption; so I sorted them by production number:

  • (filmed with production number MAC416): Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO
Written by Jim Adler, directed by Ericson Core
  • (MAC417): Golden Lancehead + Venom + Blood + Baggage

We still don’t know yet how many episodes we’ll get. According to SpoilerTV, production dates are November to March.

Working on Episode 502
(Note: Since we don’t know the order of the episodes yet, I will continue to refer to the to-be-filmed-episodes by their production number.)

Filming for the episode with production number 502 started on November 23. According to the MacGyver Writers, the episode was written by Stephanie Hicks and Andrew Karlsruher and is directed by Andrew Ahn. Due to Thanksgiving, cast and crew got to enjoy a long weekend in the middle of production.

On December 1, we got a BtS photo of Meredith Eaton with Alessia Costantini (presumably back in LA). With Atlanta getting snowfall, Meredith sure has the better weather conditions for filming at the moment. There was no new BtS material from set until today, when Tristin posted a few Instagram stories. As Lucas told CBS LA, they filmed a stunt scene with a garbage truck. Ian also just posted a story from set while sitting in a car; joined by Levy, Tristin and Lucas.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
There have been no new (public) Casting Calls.

The first MacGyver Novel (MacGyver: Meltdown) was released on November 27. Both the book and the kindle version can be ordered here.

On Tuesday, we finally got a first Trailer for Lucas Till’s upcoming movie Son of the South. It’s by the Australian distributor Heritage Films, so I hope that the US distributor also will release a trailer soon. There’s a release date for March 21 in France, but depending on the pandemic, the movie might not be released in theatres.

MacGyver Reboot Update #123

A collective, happy sigh in the fandom last week – we have a filming date for Season 5!

Premiere Date Speculations (encore)
On October 13 and 21, CBS announced premiere dates for 10 plus 5 of their shows. Sadly, MacGyver was not part of these lists. It seems that CBS wants to set a premiere date for the entire Friday line-up.

Considering that Blue Bloods just started filming around October 5, they probably don’t have any episodes ready to air yet. Also, CBS might have waited to announce their midseason shows in case another production has to be put on a short hiatus and is delayed (or worse, benched for the season). That way, they can quickly readjust the schedule in case one of the other weekday line-ups collapses.

According to a tweet by the Magnum PI Writers, the premiere was planned to happen before the end of the year. All we can do is be patient and wait for news, but it looks more and more likely we won’t get any new episodes before next year and that MacGyver stays a midseason show for now.

All you need to know about Season 5
Most important thing first: We finally have a filming date! On October 31, new crew member Susie Flower revealed in a Facebook comment that the filming date had been pushed because “the “stages” were so disastrously unhealthy” and that they now have a shooting date for Wednesday, November 11.

BtS photo of Season 4 turned Season 5 (via Justin Hires)

On October 27, several news outlets like Variety reported that CBS shortened its series orders for the 2020-21 Season. This is not very surprising; and I speculated the same back in Spring. Interestingly, we don’t have any information about the episode count for MacGyver yet. The official episode count for Magnum PI is 16 (instead of 20), the same as for Blue Bloods (instead of 22). There’s a good chance they will do the same episode count for the entire Friday line-up, so they can have their premieres and season finales together.

I have to admit that I’m wondering how Blue Bloods will manage even 16 episodes if they just started filming at the beginning of October. For MacGyver, the fact that they haven’t started filming yet confirms my suspicion that they will take the already filmed episodes into account; meaning they have to film about 10 more episodes.

CBS All Access promoting their available Halloween episodes

In recent weeks, we got at least quite a bit of information about upcoming storylines. Here’s a recap of all we know so far:

  • According to TV Guide Magazine and their article about the Season 5 Opener, Codex kidnaps Russ Taylor; demanding a prisoner exchange for Murdoc. (Note: This is most likely about the episode written with production number 501 that has yet to be filmed, titled “Telescope + S-218 + Amplifier + Frenemies + Fog”.)

There’s also the prospect of Mac having to navigate a potential love triangle with Desi and Riley.

  • In an article published by The Washington Post, we got some more teasers. For one, we will finally meet Bozers family: In an upcoming episode, MacGyver will talk about racial justice, police defunding and the long-standing contradictions of being a Black police officer in America with Bozer’s father. The show may also explore the tensions between the elder Bozer and his wife, active in city politics, over the defund-the-police debate.

While TV Guide Magazine usually does exclusives on the Fall Season Openers, it’s not clear yet if they will indeed air this episode first or not. Considering the long hiatus (with the leftover Season 4 episodes filmed almost a year ago by the time Season 5 will premiere) plus the change in showrunners, it would make more sense to air the “leftover” episodes first and start a new story-arc.

Lucas Till celebrating Halloween with friends (via Mike Milligan)

Additionally, the MacGyver Writers gave us 3 spoiler-teasers after reaching 8000 followers on Twitter:

  1. Mac & Riley become linked in an unexpected way
  2. We’ll meet the parents of TWO characters
  3. Russ gets a love interest

Of course, these teaser-spoilers led to a lot of fan chatter and speculations on social media; also staking the fires between Team MacRiley and Team MacDesi. There’s a good chance that we will meet the parents of Desi, though.

There have been whisperings that NCIS cast member Sean Murray will do a guest appearance on an upcoming episode. It’s been added to the Wikipedia page in the crossover section before being deleted again, but so far I haven’t seen any official news about this.

What’s going to happen now?
As mentioned above, filming for about 10 more episodes should start on November 11. I had been wondering if one of the regular cast is a high risk person, but it looks like the main problem had been the stages being in bad shape. It’s unclear if the problem was something like water damage due to the storms or if the stages had just not been made “pandemic-ready” yet. It’s also unclear if it will affect the choice of filming locations.

BtS photo of Season 4 turned Season 5 (via Robert Maxfield)

Also, filming won’t be easier now that we’re entering the colder season and the storylines for outdoor locations are more limited. Like in Vancouver, there’s also the possibility of covid test lab results being delayed, now that the big blockbuster productions have re-started filming in Atlanta Area as well. Most productions have 3-4 tests per person every week, so there’s thousands of additional tests being done.

CBS has scheduled more reruns of MacGyver starting next week. Here’s the upcoming reruns schedule:

  • Friday, November 13: Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire (4×12)
  • Friday, November 20: Save + The + Dam + World (4×13)
  • Friday, December 4: tba
  • Friday, December 11: tba
  • Friday, December 18: tba

In case you wondered, the rerun on November 27 was dropped due to “Frosty the Snowman” reruns.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
ICYMI: On October 15, CBS celebrated Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth. Alongside the cast of several CBS shows, Levy Tran, Lucas Till and Meredith Eaton took selfies while wearing the purple shirts.

On October 28, Lucas Till encouraged people to vote via Shirts Across America. The connection to this organization might have been coming together because Bob Zellner (author of the book that Lucas’ movie Son of the South is based on) will speak at a workshop on December 5.

We now have more information about the project Tristin Mays worked a few months ago in Colorado. She filmed a movie called “The Christmas Sitters” that will air on the ion TV channel in December. A fan site of Tristin’s co-star Nathan Owens posted a First Look Photo.

On November 3, Henry Ian Cusick revealed in an Instagram Story he’s travelling to Atlanta that day – to get a haircut. After a quick home visit, Justin Hires returned to Atlanta yesterday. Tristin Mays had to get a covid test done on November 4. While the cast is getting ready for filming, we haven’t seen much indication of the crew yet. It might also take a while to find out who’s on the crew this season. For one, the new showrunner will bring in people she already worked with before. Second, some of the crew that worked on previous seasons have already started on other projects.

MacGyver Reboot Update #122

There’s still no filming date for Season 5, but we have some information about upcoming storylines.

Premiere Date Speculations
On October 13, CBS announced premiere dates for 10 of their shows; followed by some new key art, press releases and teaser trailers. Sadly, MacGyver was not on the list. On October 21, CBS announced the return of an additional 5 of their shows. Again, MacGyver was not on the list.

I speculated a few months ago that CBS might want to set a premiere date for the entire Friday lineup, and now it seems that this is indeed their plan. Considering that Blue Bloods just started filming around October 5, they don’t have any episodes ready to air yet. It’s also possible that they wait in case another production has to be put on hiatus or is benched for the rest of the season, so they can quickly readjust the schedule (though it’s more likely they will put in reruns instead).

BtS photo of Season 4 turned Season 5 (via Henry Ian Cusick)

Initially, CBS had scheduled more episodes of The Greatest AtHome Videos and Undercover Boss on Fridays; followed by Blue Bloods Reruns up to November 20. They later replaced the timeslots with reruns of MacGyver and Magnum up until mid-December. The schedule is not set in stone, however. Since CBS usually has special programming set for Thanksgiving weekend, it doesn’t look very likely for MacGyver to premiere before December, though – which would mean 3 episodes at most until Christmas Break.

According to a tweet by the Magnum PI Writers, the premiere was planned to happen before the end of the year. Apparently, cast member Amy Hill also mentioned on social media that the Magnum premiere is planned for December. Guess all we can do is wait and see. If it was a pandemic-free year, MacGyver might have been benched for midseason anyway, despite the cancellation of Hawaii Five-0.

New Logo Teaser for CBS (via MacGyverCBS)

All you need to know about Season 5
CBS has upgraded its logo a bit and posted new “title cards” for their shows, but used an Official Still of Episode 4×08 for MacGyver. It’s understandable that they’re now busy promoting the shows that have a premiere in November, but it’s still disappointing for fans of the reboot. After all, they have material of 6 ready-to-air-episodes to choose from – episodes that have been filmed half a year ago.

We did get news about upcoming storylines, though. TV Guide Magazine has a tradition for Fall Preview Teasers by providing information about the season openers. While they did use an Official Still of Episode 4×02, new Showrunner Monica Macer warned that Codex is still a threat. According to the article about the Season 5 Opener, Codex kidnaps Russ Taylor; demanding a prisoner exchange for Murdoc. (Note: This is most likely about the episode written with production number 501 that has yet to be filmed, titled “Telescope + S-218 + Amplifier + Frenemies + Fog”.) The fans weren’t very excited about the prospect of a love triangle between Mac, Desi and Riley, however.

TV Guide Magazine Fall Preview (via PattiAnn Prinzivalli)

On October 14, The Washington Post published an article about CBS shows remaking its police shows for the Black Lives Matter era. In short interview snippets with Monica Macer, we got a few teasers about an upcoming storyline. As Macer states, the writing team has no agenda to abolish or diminish police departments.

“We’re a fun show about stopping the threat of the day with some witty banter,” she said. But, she added, “as a society, we’re also at an inflection point, and I’m not afraid to lean into that.”

(Monica Macer for The Washington Post, October 2020)

According to the article, MacGyver will hash out questions of racial justice, police defunding and the long-standing contradictions of being a Black police officer in America with a friend.

Levy Tran for Spirit Day (via MacGyverCBS)

Presumably, this friend will be Wilt Bozer. And here’s an additional Spoiler Alert: We’re finally meeting Bozers family!

Macer says she has drawn on her own experience as a woman of color. In an upcoming episode, MacGyver (…) will talk with the father of his friend Wilt Bozer, who also plays a paternal role for him, about the elder Bozer’s inner conflict as a Black police officer. The show may also explore the tensions between the elder Bozer and his wife, active in city politics, over the defund-the-police debate.

(The Washington Post, October 2020)

ICYMI: Back in July, the writers promised us a “real teaser” when reaching 8000 followers on Twitter. They reached that goal on October 16. This Monday, the writers gave us 3 Spoilers for our efforts:

  1. Mac & Riley become linked in an unexpected way
  2. We’ll meet the parents of TWO characters
  3. Russ gets a love interest

Of course, these teaser-spoiler led to a lot of fan activity and speculations on social media.

A Wild Tristin Mays Appears (via Danielle Lyn)

What’s going to happen now?
Most scripted CBS crime/drama shows and some of the CBS comedies have successfully started filming. On October 12, Justin Hires travelled to LA. In an Instagram Live Video, he revealed that they have gotten a filming date and will start up pretty soon.

Tristin Mays had visited Houston before her arrival in Atlanta and it looks like she settled in until they start production. Justin arrived in Atlanta on Monday. The location of Levy Tran’s workout videos has changed, so she might be back already as well. There’s still no Casting Calls yet, and the stage hasn’t been opened up yet, but it looks like the cast and crew is gathering to prep for production.

On October 20, Heather R. Kritzer posted via Facebook that she’s travelling to Atlanta for MacGyver Season 5. Her main credits on IMDb are for Second Unit Director, Assistant Director and Producer; so she might either direct the first episode or stay on the show for the season.

Here’s the upcoming reruns schedule:

  • Friday, November 13: Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire (4×12)
  • Friday, November 20: tba
  • Friday, November 27: tba
  • Friday, December 4: tba
  • Friday, December 11: tba
  • Friday, December 18: tba

Note that this schedule is not definite until an official Press Release by CBS. And sometimes, not even after the Press Release of an episode *lol*. But it can’t hurt to tune in live for these reruns and/or talk about it on social media and make some noise; letting CBS know that we’re eager for new material.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
On October 15, CBS celebrated Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth. Last year, the cast took a photo in the War Room. This year, alongside the cast and crew of several CBS shows, Levy Tran, Lucas Till and Meredith Eaton took selfies while wearing the purple shirts.

There’s no release date yet for Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South in the US. Interestingly, both Allociné and Cineday Orange list the release date for France as March 10, 2021.

ICYMI: A few weeks ago, Lucas did a very interesting, hour-long video podcast with actor Billy Gallo (presumably recorded in September), talking about his career and acting in general, but also about filming MacGvyer under Ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov.

Best of TV Awards: Nomination Phase
The Reboot is soon competing again in the “Best of TV Awards” held by Canada Graphs. As usual, the automatic nominees list includes eligible finalists and semi-finalists from the 2019 awards; as well as eligible winners from prior years. Therefore, the regular cast is already listed in most of the categories. The nomination thread is still open.

MacGyver Reboot Update #121

We know the title for the episode written as production number 501, but there’s still no filming date for Season 5 *sigh*

Zoom Call with the writing team (via MacGyver Writers)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

All you need to know about Season 5
Some networks already released posters or teasers about their upcoming shows. Sadly, CBS is not one of them.

Generally, we still don’t know much about Season 5. There’s no information about the episode count order or about the members of the writing and producing team.

A few weeks ago, Justin Hires revealed the script title page for the episode written as production number 501 (Telescope + S-218 + Amplifier + Frenemies + Fog). Additionally, the writers keep teasing us without saying too much. On October 1st, they tweeted a line of dialogue from an upcoming script as a reward for reaching 7800 followers.

Out of Context dialogue of an upcoming script (via MacGyver Writers)

(They promised us a bigger tease when reaching 8000 Followers, so you know what you gotta do.) On October 5, the writers team met up with Lucas Till via Zoom to pitch Season 5 to him. Lucas seemed very excited about what’s coming; stating that this will probably be the best television he may ever be a part of.

Upcoming Episodes Overview
This overview I put together is probably not fully accurate. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), from SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

  • production number 414 / presumably aired as 5×01: Thief + Painting + Viro-486 + Justice

  • 417 / 5×04: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Blood + Baggage
Written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by David Straiton
  • 418 / 5×05: SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini

Note that the episode titles and their order is not definite until an official Press Release by CBS.

Quote from Lucas Till for a podcast (via Billy Gallo)

What’s going to happen now?
Most scripted CBS crime/drama shows have successfully started filming (e.g. SWAT, NCIS: LA, NCIS, Magnum PI, NCIS: New Orleans, All Rise, FBI, FBI: Most Wanted and SEAL Team). It’s not clear if they are able to move along in the same tempo as before the pandemic. Depending on the status of production and the episodes ready to air, it’s possible they won’t premiere all the shows yet, despite having planned to air them in Fall.

There’s still no filming date yet for veteran show Blue Bloods, for example. If CBS wants to air new episodes of some of their shows alongside other networks like ABC and NBC, they might have to either re-organize their schedule or put in reruns for some shows.

Tristin Mays for Melted Fit (via MeltedFit Website)

What are Cast and Crew up to?
There’s still no information about what project Tristin Mays has been working on. Two weeks ago, she visited Houston, Texas. Last weekend, she was in Atlanta. Considering that the rest of the regular cast is still being home in Hawaii (Henry Ian Cusick) and California (Levy Tran, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton) and that there’s no Casting Calls being out yet, it doesn’t look like they’re gearing up for filming in the next few weeks.

There’s no release date yet for Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South and also no information if Lucas and/or some of his co-stars will be involved in any promo. He did a very interesting, hour-long video podcast with actor Billy Gallo (presumably recorded in September), talking about his career and acting in general, but also about what cast and crew had to endure while filming MacGvyer under Ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds) had 1.25 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.4%, followed by Episode 4×12 (Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire) with 1.22 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.6%.

The Season Finale Episode 4×13 (Save + The + Dam + World) reached 1.31 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.2%. On average, every episode of Season 4 had about 1.3 million viewers on German channel Sat.1. That’s less than for the other seasons – but considering the lack of promo and the episodes being available to watch online for free for a week beforehand and a month after airing, it’s not that bad.

Therefore, the regular cast is already listed in most of the categories.

The nomination thread will be open for 3-4 weeks, so you can still nominate the new regular actors (Levy Tran and Henry Ian Cusick), guest stars, best episodes and directors.
