As with Season 1, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each Episode of Season 2; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. (Because I just can’t keep quiet, as you all know by now.)
If you missed Part 1 (Episodes 2×01 to 2×05), you can find the post here. For Part 2 (Episodes 2×06 to 2×10), you go there. Part 3 (Episodes 2×11 to 2×15) can be found here.
Starting with Episode 2×15, Still Photographer Annette Brown did most of the Still-photographing for the rest of the season. Interestingly, Matty hasn’t been featured in any of the Stills since Episode 2×14 (Mardi Gras Beads + Chair). She will only come back in two Official Stills for the Season 2 Finale. Bozer shares the same fate: After Episode 2×13 (CO2 Sensor + Tree Branch), he’s only featured in Stills for 2×16 and the Season 2 Finale.
Episode 2×16: Hammock + Balcony (Still Photographer: Guy D’Alema)
Due to the Olympics, this episode premiered after a month-long hiatus. For once, CBS cranked up the promo and delivered more Official Stills than usual – 12 in total. Even the guest-stars got to be in several of the photos.
MY FAVORITE: The group doing some kind of grape-crushing-contest. This looks like they seriously had fun filming this episode.
NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: So many Stills to choose from! It would have been nice to have some photos from other scenes in there (e.g. of the Opening Gambit), but I don’t really mind. Pretty people all dolled up, what’s not to like about that? Although it’s still weird for me to see Mac drinking alcohol.
Episode 2×17: Bear Trap + Mob Boss (Still Photographer: Annette Brown)
For this episode, we got 7 Stills via SpoilerTV. All of them feature Mac, Jack and Riley on their mission near Chernobyl.
MY FAVORITE: Mac, Jack and Riley trying to get information of a guy that’s not that willing to talk, leading to Jack sacrificing some of his most beloved possessions.
NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing, really. It’s also nice to see Mac wearing a different color for once. Looks good on him.
Episode 2×18: Riley + Airplane (Still Photographer: Annette Brown)
For Episode 2×18, SpoilerTV delivered 12 Official Stills again – after a 2-week-premiere-break due to March Madness Basketball. It looks like additional promo is the one positive thing about having a short hiatus every now and then.
MY FAVORITE: Having the Colton’s back is fine, but it’s definitely nice to have an Official Still of Mac only while doing some MacGyvering.
NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: The Colton’s are fun and I hope to see them again next season, but I wasn’t so fond of the Stills with them in it. Not sure why.
Episode 2×19: Benjamin Franklin + Grey Duffle (Still Photographer: Annette Brown)
We got 10 Stills for this Episode. Amy Smart coming back as Dawn even got to be in several of them. As always, the whole team is completely color-coordinated.
MY FAVORITE: Mac, Riley, Dawn and Jack on their mission.
NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: It’s nothing new, but the Stills are not that exciting – despite the team getting arrested in most of them. I preferred Guy D’Alema’s style of taking Stills, but he went on to work on other projects.
FUN NOTE: Amy Smart’s character Dawn in casual clothing reminds me of Mac’s “bad” ex-girlfriend (Nikki Carpenter).
Episode 2×20: Skyscraper – Power (Still Photographer unknown)
For this episode, there were 2 small pics with the Press Releases – but we didn’t get any full Official Stills or Sneak Peeks until 2 hours before the Premiere. At last, Seat42F provided some last-minute Stills.
MY FAVORITE: There’s some action going on! And who’s that kid in the middle? That definitely looks like it could have been an episode of the Original Show.
NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: The Stills came in so late, they didn’t even make it to SpoilerTV. What’s up with that? It’s possible many fans never got to see them. Some of them look rather like screenshots, and there’s not even a Still Photographer credited. Maybe they were screenshots and only added as an afterthought. Also, while they don’t have the SpoilerTV logo on them, they are of a lesser quality size.
It’s been a year now since I’ve started blogging about the MacGyver Reboot on this WordPress blog. Most people land here via Twitter, but some also by using search engines. The top 3 list of search terms is pretty unspectacular:
dashboard on fire wordpress
Some search engines don’t reveal search terms for privacy reasons. According to WordPress, search engines like Google have been encrypting the vast majority of search terms since 2013. Therefore, WordPress often can’t specify which search terms were used by visitors who found this blog using a search engine. That’s why the majority on my list – almost 2000 by now – are Unknown search terms.
Still, there’s a couple of search terms I want to comment on and throw in some additional education – and maybe help the unknown searching beings in finding an answer. I’m not sure people found exactly the answer they were looking for on here, though. So feel free to comment if I missed something.
Let me say this before we start, though: I’ve never seen so many different ways how you can write “MacGyver” before.
Yes, I write a lot about the MacGyver Cast. If you’re looking for the cast of a specific episode, you might be luckier if you head over to the official reboot page on IMDb.
Not only can you check for the entire cast and crew for the whole series (circled red at the bottom) or for every episode using the Episode Guide (circled left), but you can also rate the episodes and check which episodes are the highest rated. In case you’re interested: The highest-rated one at the moment is Episode 2×12 (Mac + Jack ).
macgyver fanfiction First, let me explain: FanFiction (FF) is when fans take either the story or characters (or both) of a certain piece of work (whether it be a novel, TV show, a movie) and write their own story based on it. Easy example: The infamous Fifty Shades of Grey movie series is based on books by the same name that were initially Twilight FanFiction. If you write a story about what would have happened if famous wizard Harry Potter had been sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, that’s FanFiction.
Yes, there’s MacGyver FanFiction as well. Not as much as for other fandoms, but the Reboot fandom is still growing and new stories are published or updated every day. If you’re looking for Original MacGyver FanFiction, you can hit the MacGyverOnline forum. For Reboot FF, I usually check on either Archive Of Our Own (AO3) or FanFiction.net. Many authors post on both archives and some use Tumblr or WattPad.
Many stories are so-called Episode Tags, meaning these are scenes we didn’t get to watch in an episode (e.g. what happened after MacGyver was shot in the Pilot Episode or a specific scene told using Jack’s or Thornton’s point of view).
what did sheryl lee ralph get paid for the macgyver episode
I have no clue what actors get paid in general, so I don’t know anything about TV show salaries either. Apparently, it was enough, otherwise she wouldn’t have come back for Season 2.
what episode of macgyver does jack use his sniper rifle who loves you baby
You’re referring to the Pilot Episode (1×01: The Rising). In a flashback to their military days, we see Jack sniping at bad guys while Mac is defusing a bomb. The scene was set up to be a nod to Peter Lenkov’s other show Hawaii Five-0 since Jack has history with H50 main character Steve McGarrett (played by Alex O’Loughlin). In a deleted shot of the episode, you can see the word ALOHA stenciled on Jack’s rifle.
The scene caused some controversy; especially with fans of the Original Show. If anyone’s interested about the reasons, I wrote a blog post about it.
macgyver cast 2018 who plays willy mardi
I have no clue who Willy Mardi is, but he sounds interesting. Unless you were looking for Episode 2×14 (Mardi Gras Beads + Chair), I can’t really help out here.
macgyver justine hires cries during agent test
In the first half of Season 2, Bozer (played by Justin Hires) goes to “spy school”. In Episode 2×09 (CD-ROM + Hoagie Foil), Bozer has to pass an interrogation test at the training center which needs him to confront a painful childhood memory. Justin got many compliments on the scene by fans, but also by cast and crew – though he stated on Instagram that this was the most difficult scene he’s filmed so far for the show.
FunFact: The memory is a nod to the Original Show (Episode 4×02: Blood Brothers) since a similar childhood drama involving a gun happened to Original MacGyver and his friends. The storyline of the episode is all about MacGyver returning to his hometown to find himself haunted by the memories of that fatal shooting accident.
what did the trampoline w ballons have to do w the beginning of mcguver
The scene you’re talking about is not only a nod to the animated movie UP, but also part of the so-called Opening Gambit for Episode 2×19 (Benjamin Franklin + Grey Duffle). The Opening Gambits were implemented in the Original Show and usually written and directed by another crew than the rest of the episode. They were longer than in the Reboot, so you had a mini MacGyver adventure within the episode that usually had no ties to the main storyline. Because of the high production costs and time issues, they dropped these kind of opening sequences pretty soon. Some of them have become pretty iconic, though and feature some of the most favorite MacGyverisms of the Original Show.
what episode of macgyver season 2 does jack wear chaps
The chaps make an appearance in the Opening Gambit of Episode 2×18 (Riley + Airplane). Crew member Kate Roberson posted a funny BtS video on Instagram; revealing what these chaps looked up close. As you can see, nobody had to freeze their buttocks off.
macgyver was tied up
Oh yes. That happens quite often, both in the Original Show and in the Reboot. Not that often in the Reboot, though since sometimes it’s Jack that gets tied up. Thinking about it without any kind of research, I can refer to Episodes 1×07 (Can Opener) and 2×04 (X-Ray + Penny) where Mac is the one getting tied up to a chair.
was latest macgyver episode filmed in purrto rico
This person is referring to Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water), written by MacGyver creator Lee Zlotoff. Though the episode is set in Puerto Rico, the cast filmed in Atlanta and Georgia Area. It is possible that the crew produced some recent aerial shots of Puerto Rico via drone, but it’s also possible they bought already existing material for the landscape sequences. As far as I know, the only time the main cast actually travelled to another country to film scenes was for Episode 1×18 (Flashlight), the crossover episode with Hawaii Five-0. It was only Lucas Till and George Eads filming in Hawaii, though – the rest of the scenes were filmed in Atlanta as well.
For Season 2, the crew and the stunt doubles for Lucas and George travelled to Cuba to film the Opening Gambit of Episode 2×01 (DIY or DIE). The scenes involving Lucas and George themselves were also filmed in Atlanta, in front of blue and green screens. A TV show simply doesn’t have the budget to do all the oversea travelling required for filming on location. To save money, many TV shows set in California are either filmed in Vancouver or in Atlanta.
what do i watch first hawaii 5 o bulletproof or macgyver flashlight?
Good question. Since the episode titles for Hawaii Five-0 are in Hawaiian, it wasn’t that easy to find out which episode this visitor was looking for. In fact, I still don’t know: Despite Wikipedia helping out by providing the English titles, I couldn’t find an episode named “Bulletproof”. In general, I’ll advise watching the episodes in the same order as they premiered on American TV. In this case, that means first MacGyver and then H50 plus following the airdates, so 1×17 (Ruler), 7×18 (Handle with Care), 1×18 (Flashlight), 7×19 (Exodus), 1×19 (Compass) and so on. I’ve watched the whole first Season of MacGyver before starting Season 7 of H50 (without having seen Seasons 2 to 6, actually) and although both shows are set in the same Universe, I was fine (besides probably missing some Easter Eggs).
Filming of Season 2 has officially wrapped. Including the Season 2 Finale on May 4, there’s 3 episodes left to enjoy – but there will be more this year, because the show got renewed for a 3rd Season!
(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about characters and storylines in Seasons 2 and 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)
What’s happening at the moment?
Despite wrapping up main production on March 24 and celebrating a small Wrap Party in Atlanta, some crew members and Stand-Ins continued filming additional scenes and inserts until the end of March.
Things got pretty quiet after that – at least until the “big news” hit on Wednesday. Some of the crew members have started working on other projects, others are enjoying a holiday. Besides Justin Hires, the main cast has more or less disappeared as well and only “pops” up every now and then.
George Eads posted two new photos on Instagram yesterday while Lucas has appeared on one or two Instagram Live Stories posted by friends. He came back from his “Social Media Hiatus” specifically for the premiere of last week’s episode 2×20 (Skyscraper – Power), posting a new BtS photo of the elevator stunt with Elisha Henig.
In the photo, you can recognize Prop Master Kate Guanci adjusting the “MacGyvered” lights. As Stunt Woman Juliana Potter revealed, it was her doubling Elisha in this scene, providing a nice picture of them looking like twins.
While it’s a wrap on the filming process, there’s of course still post-production stuff to do – ADR, editing, composing music and more. Also, it’s still not a wrap on the BtS pictures: Every time an episode airs, some of the guest-stars provide new photos of the filming process; often of some earlier episodes as well. Brooklyn Davis had let the crew film inside her house for Episode 2×19 (Benjamin Franklin + Duffle Bag). In her Instagram post, you can see how they hid the fake money behind the (fake) walls.
Since I’ve been on holiday for several weeks, I often stumble over pictures posted a while ago; e.g. of Mark Manos who directed today’s episode 2×21 (Wind + Water). Sometimes, it’s also pictures of the Unaired Pilot that shall not be talked about.
Season 3 News
Last year, there was a “mass-announcement” for the CBS renewals at the end of March, so of course fans were getting impatient to know the fate of their favorite shows. On Wednesday, the wait was finally over: The Reboot has been officially renewed for a 3rd Season!
So far, we have to wait for the definite CBS timetable until the Upfronts on May 16. But since both Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods have been renewed as well, there is a good chance that the “Trifecta” will stay untouched. Several websites are speculating about the possibility to move MacGyver to Mondays, especially since the fate of the struggling Monday comedy lineup is still unclear and Scorpion (that also airs on Monday) hasn’t been renewed yet.
There’s no information about the number of episodes, but I’m assuming it will be a direct Full Season Order of 22 episodes, with a Premiere date in September like last year.
Cast, crew and writers were very happy to announce and share the news. David Dastmalchian posted a new BtS photo of him with Lucas Till in Episode 2×15 (Murdoc + Handcuffs); promising to be back next season to finally take out the “blond boyscout” once and for all. Executive Producer Peter Lenkov already gave us a teaser of the new logo after the news hit – only to post another, refined version the next day. Looks like they changed their mind over night – similarly to Sesaon 2 when also two different versions of the logo floated around in the beginning (one provided by Craig O’Neill, the other by Lenkov).
Official Stills, Press Releases and other Promo Tonight’s Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water) was written by MacGyver-creator Lee David Zlotoff (who also wrote Episode 1×19: Compass). While we got the Press Release a while ago, Offical Stills were only added yesterday. Almost all of them feature the main hero on his own. Today, they added 3 Sneak Peeks as well.
On April 10, we got the Press Release for Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51). There’s not much info and only one Official Still so far, but hopefully, we get more photos soon.
The Season 2 Finale will air in two weeks, on May 4. As the Press Release confirmed on April 16, Episode 2×23 is titled “MacGyver + MacGyver”. In an interview back in January, Peter Lenkov had promised we’re going to meet MacGyver’s father by the end of the Season, so of course the cast list enforced the questions and the speculations about MacGyver Senior (more about that further down).
So far, Season 2 had an average demo-rating of 0.86 with 6.96 million live-viewers per episode. Compared to Season 1, that’s down by about 21% and 7%, but as TV Series Finale states:
Although it ranks 21st out of the 25 scripted CBS TV shows in the demo, it rises to 11th place, in terms of average total viewership.
Not so bad if you look at it like that, no? As Deadline states it in their renewal article:
While MacGyver has not necessarily been a critical darling, it has done respectable business on Friday and has done well internationally for CBS based on its recognizable title and popcorn, procedural nature. It draws a respectable 8.5 million viewers and has been able to reenergize CBS’ Friday drama lineup when it joined it last season.
Cast, Crew and Character News: Is that a Plot Twist I see? In tonight’s episode (2×21: Wind + Water), Diogo Morgado will guest-star as Mac’s friend Carlos. According to TV Insider, Kamar de los Reyes will act as a police officer trying to negotiate after Mac was taken hostage by robbers in a bank.
Because there were no news about the Season Finale when writing my last Update, I had combed through the Casting Calls again to see if I had maybe missed the casting for Stand-Ins or Photo Doubles for MacGyver senior. A Call for a Stand-In hinted at Joshua Childs having a part. He would have certainly fit age-wise, but as it turned out by April 10, he’s part of Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) as a member of the NASCAR pit crew.
The Press Release for the Season Finale (2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver) confirmed Billy Baldwin (Elwood, Riley’s father), Lance Gross (Billy Colton, Riley’s boyfriend) and Reign Edwards (Leanna, Bozer’s girlfriend) being back. Curiosly, there’s no one listed as MacGyver Senior in the cast list although the title indicates he will be in the episode.
The Press Release for the Season 1 Finale had been a bit spoilery, so there’s the possibility that Mac Senior is “hidden” behind a character’s name. So far, the best guess is that Mac’s father is Oversight, played by Tate Donovan. He fits age- and looks-wise and judging by BtS pictures, he’s also in the scene with Mac and Jack riding horses.
Oversight has been mentioned several times since Season 1. It would be nice to finally have a face to the faceless person(s) representing this ominous board that so far never dealt with their agents on a personal level.
The Season Finale Press Release lists Kate Bond’s character Jill as a recurring role (the first one for this show), which means we will probably see a lot more of Jill in Season 3. On the other hand, we also know that there will be a change in the crew personnel and maybe also in the action scenes: As Stunt Coordinator Jeff Wolfe revealed on Twitter, he has not been invited back, despite winning the show its only Emmy Nomination (so far).
Also, one cast member might be missing: As TV Line stated on April 10, a source told them that there are no plans for Isabel Lucas as Samantha Cage to return. While I wasn’t sold on her character’s introduction, I felt she could have been useful as another field agent in a recurring capacity. Cage’s fate seemed a bit hurried and unplanned and not like an exciting plot twist. Her absence therefore feels unresolved to me; especially since there are still some unanswered questions: What did Murdoc have against her personally and why did he know she had changed her name? I really hope she will have at least another guest-gig on an episode next season to get some answers.
MacGyver in Germany
On April 15, German channel Sat.1 aired Episode 1×11 (Scissors) for the first time on German FreeTV since they had skipped 3 episodes when airing Season 1 on primetime last year. The German FreeTV premiere of Episode 1×16 (Hook) will air on April 29.
There’s still no news about the German-speaking premiere of Season 2 or the DVD release for Season 1. Guess we’ll have to wait for a bit longer.
While cast and crew wrapped up filming last month, we still have 5 more episodes to enjoy – including the Season 2 Finale on May 4.
(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about Season 2 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)
What’s happening at the moment?
Cast and Crew wrapped up main production on March 24. The next day, the Atlanta crew and some cast members celebrated the Wrap Party at Club Rí Rá in Atlanta. Interestingly, of the main cast only Lucas Till and Justin Hires were present this year. Contrary to last year, there’s only a handful of pictures to find. Must have been a small and “secret” affair – or people were too tired to celebrate after filming for about 189 days within roughly 8 months.
Alaina Lewis – soon-to-be-wife of Kevin Marshall Pinkney, Justin Hires’ Stand-In – posted a nice picture with Lucas; joking that he took it pretty well when she told him she will be off the market soon.
Only hours after the first pictures of the Wrap Party popped up on Social Media, Tristin Mays posted pictures and videos revealing her being back in LA. She visited the Paramount Studio lot as well – it’s not clear yet what for (ADR sessions or contract discussions?)
For the Moment, I’m assuming they will have another Wrap Party in LA – one that Executive Producer Peter Lenkov (who’s just wrapped filming for the Magnum PI Pilot in Hawaii) and some of the guest-stars will attend as well. Maybe a combined one, together with people working on Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum?
It’s a Wrap. Or not?
Although main production had wrapped on March 24, some of the Casting Calls for Stand-Ins had been dated for March 27 and 28. Additionally, some Crew members revealed on Instagram that they were still shooting inserts at the end of the week.
During the last few weeks, the cast posted several group pictures. Some have started working on other projects together, so it’s not clear if they will be back in Summer if the show gets renewed.
While it’s a wrap on the filming process, there’s still post-production stuff to do – ADR, editing, composing music and more. It’s possible that since Peter Lenkov has to finish the Magnum Pilot in time before the Upfronts in May, there might be other people involved with editing the final episodes for the Reboot.
Official Stills, Press Releases and other Promo
On March 26, we got 9 additional Stills for Episode 2×19 (Benjamin Franklin + Grey Duffle). They all feature the same scene where it looks like Mac and Team get arrested once again. The preview features presumably the Opening Gambit with Mac, Jack and Riley doing their own version of the animated movie UP! In the Sneak Peek released on April 5, we got educated about “dirty money” – and a new section of “shippers” was born on social media (shipping MacGyver with Jill, one of the Phoenix Techs).
The title for Episode 2×20 is “Skyscraper – Power”. So far, this is the only title with a minus instead of a plus.
Additionally, we got some more scoop on Episode 2×21: It’s set in post-hurricane Puerto Rico where Mac and Team help Mac’s old friend Carlos re-building his home. Because that’s not adventure enough, there will be kidnappings. CBS released the synopsis yesterday, revealing that the kidnapping of Mac will happen in the bank Carlos works at. Fun Fact: This episode was written by MacGyver-creator Lee David Zlotoff (who also wrote Episode 1×19: Compass).
There was some “other” promo as well: CBS Watch! Magazine published a mini-interview of Tristin Mays talking about the 7 things that make her smile. On March 5, Meredith Eaton was on the talk show “The Talk” and revealed in this little clip that tonight’s episode is a big one for her character. Apparently, Matty will go back to her old stomping ground (the CIA) and put herself in danger; meaning Meredith got to do some stunt work of her own.
There’s still no official news about MacGyver being renewed for a 3rd season. Last year, there was a “mass-announcement” for renewed CBS-shows at the end of March, so fans are getting impatient to know the fate of their favorite shows.
Episode 2×18 managed 6.43 million live viewers with a demo rating of 0.8 – which is a bit disappointing, but not too bad for a Holiday Weekend. Ratings tend to fall in Spring and Summer and the show ends its Season roughly three weeks later than last year (the Season 1 Finale aired on Good Friday, April 14), but fans have been speculating if the long breaks between episodes might have had an additional negative effect on the ratings.
So far, Season 2 had an average demo-rating of 0.86 with 7.01 million live-viewers per episode. The averages per episode are lower than for Season 1, but it still has better viewer numbers than the two current 2017-rookie-shows on CBS (e.g. SEAL Team or SWAT). Interestingly, both of these shows already got renewed, so it should be a no-brainer that MacGyver (and the whole Friday night line-up) will be renewed as well.
Cast and Character News and Speculations In tonight’s Episode 2×19 (Benjamin Franklin + Grey Duffle), Amy Smart will return as Dawn. Edward Asner will guest-star in next week’s Episode 2×20, alongside Elisha Henig (Mr. Robot). Diogo Morgado will play Mac’s friend Carlos in Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water). According to TV Insider, Kamar de los Reyes will have a part in this episode as well; namely as a police officer trying to negotiate after Mac was taken hostage by robbers in a bank.
As always, Extras were needed as well during the last few weeks of filming. Some of the Casting Calls were looking for Stand-Ins for Billy Baldwin (Elwood, Riley’s father) and for Lance Gross (Billy Colton). Reign Edwards (Leanna, Bozer’s girlfriend) has been seen on set as well. So double date for Riley/Billy and Bozer/Leanna? A “heart-to-heart” between Elwood and Billy? Lots of possibilities for drama here.
In an interview back in January, Peter Lenkov had promised we’re going to meet MacGyver’s father by the end of the Season. Because there are no news about the Season Finale yet, I combed through the Casting Calls again last week. A Casting Call for a Stand-In hinted at Joshua Childs having a part. Funny thing: Joshua had a smaller part in Hannah Montana (the movie that made Lucas Till famous). Age- and look-wise, he would be a pretty good fit for MacGyver senior, but of course he could just play a “regular” bad guy.
One of the last Casting Calls was for a Stand-In for Arye Gross. He has Jewish roots – his character could have a connection to the concentration camp prisoner in the picture on the file Mac received in the package from his father.
(Author’s Note: As it turns out by April 10, both Joshua Childs and Arye Gross are in the Press Release for Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51). Since Arye Gross’ Stand-In Casting Call was set for the last few days of filming, it’s possible they had done some additional inserts.)
MacGyver in German
The Reboot still seems to do well enough in all the German-speaking countries: Austrian channel ORF1, German channel Sat.1 and Swiss channel 3+ are all re-airing the first Season at the moment. Some of the episodes that are being re-aired in Austria actually get better audience numbers than when they premiered in Autumn 2017.
On April 15, German channel Sat.1 will air Episode 1×11 (Scissors). This will be the actual premiere of this episode on German FreeTV since they had skipped 3 episodes when airing Season 1 on primetime last year.
While there’s no new episode to premiere until March 30, cast and crew are filming the Final Episode of Season 2.
(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about Season 2 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)
Mini-Hiatus on TV For the second time, fans have to endure a mini-hiatus: Because of the Winter Olympics, there was no premiere for 4 weeks. Due to March Madness, there won’t be a new episode until March 30.
At least my short Updates Hiatus is over for now – though I didn’t really had the time to sort through all the Reboot news yet and frankly, I’m not sure I will manage to catch up anytime soon *sigh*.
Alas, I’ll try to put the most important news regarding production on this post so I can go on with “business as usual” in my next post.
What’s happening at the moment?
A few months ago, CBS had ordered an additional episode for Season 2. As it is, cast and crew have been working on Episode 2×23 this week – and therefore on the Season 2 Finale.
Crew Member Brandon Smith mentioned on Wednesday that there are only 3 days left. Indeed, the most recent Casting Calls for Extras are dated for tomorrow, so it looks like main production will wrap this weekend.
They have been filming at the Georgia International Horse Park this week. Executive Producer Peter Lenkov is busy filming the pilot episode of the Magnum Reboot in Hawaii, but he uploaded a blurry picture of Lucas Till riding a horse with the simple description “Marlboro Mac Man”. I’ve been wondering if we ever get to see Lucas on a Horse. Years ago, Miley Cyrus had stated in an interview for Hannah Montana that despite Lucas learning to ride specifically for the movie, he had done better than her who has been riding for years. Original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson filmed several scenes with horses for the show and seemed always very comfortable around (or on) them, so this is a nice nod.
About that Season 1 DVD release
After waiting for so long, US-fans were finally able to get their hands onto the DVD of Season 1. They did get a nice carton-cover and a surprisingly generous price reduction – but sadly, there’s no DVD Extras at all and the menu looks different as well; using simply the Official Poster as background.
It’s understandable that many fans complained about it on social media because the Extras (specifically the Gag-Reel) were the main reason for fans to order the DVD in the first place. For now, the DVD adds no more value than buying it as a digital version. It might be a bargain for an occasional viewer that missed a few episodes and/or can’t get it via CBS All Access or iTunes – but for a fan, this is very disappointing and puzzling; considering the Extras are included in the versions available in other countries, not to mention that other countries (e.g. UK or Australia) got the DVD weeks or even months earlier than the US-fans.
Funny thing – or is it rather irony? – during the last few weeks, some cast and crew members did BtS interviews for the Season 2 DVD. For once, the Costume Departement with Sarah Downer did an interview about the Halloween Costumes in Episode 2×05. A few weeks earlier, both David Dastmalchian and Michael Des Barres had met up again on the Paramount Studio lot in LA for an interview with David Naylor.
Official Stills, Press Releases and other Promo
On March 2, Meredith Eaton took over the official social media accounts for some promo in advance of Episode 2×16 (Hammock + Balcony). She did a short interview with Sarah Downer at the Costume Departement and let her cast members answer some fan questions before she answered some questions as well. You can still find the interviews up on Instagram.
Justin Hires revealed that the interrogation scene between Bozer and Leanna had been the hardest scene to film so far. Tristin Mays stated that the Satellite Camera Balloon (Episode 1×09) is her favorite “MacHack” so far while George Eads said that Lucas Till is the funniest person on set. Lucas thinks Jill being the coolest character on set while Meredith wants Christopher Walken or Josh Duhamel guest-starring in an episode.
According to TV Times, the title for Episode 2×20 is “Skyscraper – Power”. Unless it’s a typo, this is the first title with a minus instead of a plus so far. Additionally, we already have some scoop on Episode 2×21: It’s set in post-hurricane Puerto Rico, there’s one of Mac’s old friends named Carlos, and there will be at least two kidnappings. Episode 2×22 is titled “UFO + Area 51”. Now that sounds interesting!
There’s still no official press release yet, but there has been talk weeks ago about MacGyver already being renewed for a 3rd season. While I have no doubt that CBS will eventually renew the show, I’m not sure how trusty these “insiders” are.
So far, Season 2 had an average demo-rating of 0.86 with 7.04 million live-viewers per episode. Overall, ratings are falling and the averages are lower than the ratings for Season 1, but what I stated in my last Update still helds up: The Reboot didn’t loose as many viewers compared to last season as other current CBS-Shows (e.g. Scorpion) or as other 2016-rookie-shows (e.g. Lethal Weapon on FOX). It also still has better viewer numbers than the current 2017-rookie-shows on CBS (e.g. SEAL Team or SWAT).
Nevertheless, fans have been speculating if the long breaks between episodes might hurt the ratings even further. Ratings tend to fall nearing Summer anyway, and the show ends its Season five weeks later than last year (the Season 1 Finale aired on Good Friday, April 14).
Cast and Character News While Samantha Cage has been listed on every Official Press Release delivered via SpoilerTV, Isabel Lucas has not been in another episode so far. Interestingly, Isabel was back in LA by Wednesday. It’s not clear yet if she will be heading over to Atlanta for the Season Finale or if she has been on set recently.
In next week’s Episode 2×18 (Riley + Airplane), we will encounter the Coltons again. Should be a fun Episode. Soap Opera star Joel Rush takes part in this Episode as well.
Diogo Morgado will play Mac’s friend Carlos in Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water). He posted a picture of him holding lots and lots of money. Ransom money? Maybe a hint at him being involved with the bad guys?
Some of the Casting Calls were looking for Stand-Ins for Billy Baldwin and for Lance Gross. So it looks like Elwood and Billy Colton might be back for the Season Finale. Some talk between Riley’s father and her boyfriend? That sure will go down well *lol*.
MacGyver in Europe
The German-speaking premiere of Episode 1×19 (Compass) managed to pull in a live audience of 98’000 people; Episode 1×20 (Hole Puncher) reached 110’000 live viewers.
Sadly, I don’t have the ratings for Episode 1×21 (Cigar Cutter), but on average, every Reboot Episode had about 83’000 live viewers in Austria.
In fact, the Reboot seems to do well in all the German-speaking countries. Austrian channel ORF1, German channel Sat.1 and Swiss channel 3+ are re-airing the first Season at the moment. There’s no German-speaking premiere date for Season 2 yet, but it might happen around June as with Season 1 last year.
Some episodes that are being re-aired on ORF1 at the moment actually get better numbers than when they premiered in September 2017:
Episode 1×01 (The Rising): 88’000 live viewers
Episode 1×02 (Metal Saw): 102’000 live viewers (premiere: 81’ooo)
Episode 1×03 (Awl): 86’000 live viewers (premiere: 51’ooo)
I’m not sure if the high numbers have to do with the fact the premiere happened when it was still pretty warm outside or if it has to do with the programme that precedes the episodes this time around; namely winter sports events like skiing that usually garner a lot of attention in Austria.
France grants the Reboot 3 hours every week; airing two episodes of Season 2 followed by an episode of Season 1 on Wednesdays. Italy just started re-airing Season 1 this week.
