MacGyver Reboot Update #120

There’s still no filming date for Season 5. But we got the title for the episode written as production number 501!

All you need to know about Season 5
Despite the delay of Fall Season, some networks already released posters or teaser tweets about their upcoming shows. Sadly, CBS doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to promote any of their shows yet. Maybe they’re still waiting a bit to set definite premiere dates, unlike some other networks that already have premiere dates set in place and are moving them up and down depending how filming is going.

BtS photo of Season 4 turned Season 5 (via Lucas Till)

We did get some exciting news though, delivered by Justin Hires. On Wednesday, he uploaded the script title page for the episode written as production number 501. It’s titled “Telescope + S-218 + Amplifier + Frenemies + Fog”; indicating that David Dastmalchian will make another guest appearance as our favorite villain Murdoc (he was introduced as “Suspect 218” in Episode 1×08).

Several writers (e.g. Cindy Appel) and producers (e.g. Terry Matalas) moved on to other productions. At the moment, we don’t know exactly who’s on the writing and producing team. Back in July, Jim Adler tweeted that he was fired by Lenkov. Therefore, it’s very likely that this was one of the scripts with production number 421 or 422 that has been updated to fit better into new showrunner Monica Macer’s vision for Season 5.

It will be interesting to see how they will handle the difference in appearance between the seasons. Considering that Russ had his leg broken in the Season 4 Finale and has probably been out of commission for a few months, it’s very likely that they will add another, but smaller time jump for the start of Season 5.

Upcoming Episodes Overview
This overview I put together is probably not fully accurate. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), from SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

  • production number 414 / presumably aired as 5×01: Thief + Painting + Viro-486 + Justice
Written by Peter M. Lenkov and Andrew Klein
  • 415 / 5×02: Resort + Desi + Riley + Witness
Written by Stephanie Hicks, directed by Avi Youabian
  • 416 / 5×03: Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO
Written by Jim Adler, directed by Ericson Core
  • 417 / 5×04: Golden Lancehead + Venom + Blood + Baggage
Written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by David Straiton
  • 418 / 5×05: SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini
Written by Cindy Appel, directed by Yangzom Brauen
  • 419 / 5×06: Banh Bao + Drill + Burner + Mason
Written by Justin Lisson and Sophia Lopez, directed by Peter Weller
  • 420 / 5×07: Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt (unfinished production)
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore
  • 501 / 5x??: Telescope + S-218 + Amplifier + Frenemies + Fog
Written by Jim Adler and Stephanie Hicks

Note that the episode titles and their order is not definite until an official Press Release by CBS.

Sadly, they wiped the IMDb listings after the announcement that 4×13 would be the season finale, so I can’t access all the information about the guest stars anymore. It’s possible that the episodes initially filmed for Season 4 will be re-named and/or re-ordered for Season 5.

What’s going to happen now?
Several scripted CBS crime/drama shows have successfully started filming: SWAT, NCIS: LA, NCIS, Magnum PI (September 16), NCIS: New Orleans (September 21) and All Rise (September 23). The official accounts and cast members are not very forthcoming with posting BtS material. Therefore, it’s difficult to say if they are able to move along in the same tempo as before the pandemic or if production is going slower than usual.

Most of the other crime/drama shows have already been greenlit for production: Bull (September 25), Blood and Treasure (September), SEAL Team (September), Evil (September), FBI (October 6), FBI: Most Wanted (October 6), Rookie Clarice (October), Rookie CSI: Vegas (October) and Veteran Blue Bloods (tba).

The writers keep teasing us without saying too much. This Monday, they tweeted a GIF of a bear and a cabin in the woods. We did get a new BtS goodie for Episode 4×13 (Save + The + Dam + World), posted by Sarah Downer.

Season 4 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) beat the rerun of Blue Bloods in audience numbers, reaching 2.764 million live-viewers with a demo rating of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×09 (Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis) won over Blue Bloods in both audience numbers and demo ratings; entertaining 2.918 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.4. The rerun of Episode 4×10 (Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac) got 2.711 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3, again reaching more live-viewers than Blue Bloods.

Starting tonight, there will be at least 5 more episodes of “The Greatest AtHome Videos” in our favorite timeslot; followed by “Undercover Boss” starting October 2. In between, there’s also episodes of “Big Brother”. If CBS plans on airing MacGyver and Magnum PI together, they won’t start before November 6.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
There were several hints that Tristin Mays filmed a project in Colorado, but so far there’s no information on what she’s been working on. A few weeks ago, Justin Hires released his first podcast episode while both Lucas Till and Levy Tran pretty much disappeared from social media.

Lucas’ movie Son of the South was set for a premiere on September 16. With no trailer or reviews being released beforehand, it was no surprise when the premiere date got taken off IMDb again. There’s no new release date yet and also no information if Lucas and/or some of his co-stars will be involved in any promo.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) had 1.17 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.1%. Until a few weeks ago, there was an episode of Reef Break sandwiched between MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0. Its ratings dragged down both shows airing before and after, so German channel Sat.1 unceremoniously pulled Reef Break off the primetime schedule; replacing it with a second episode of MacGyver.

Apparently, it paid off: Episode 4×09 (Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis) had 1.24 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.4%. Episode 4×10 (Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac) got 1.32 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.9%. Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds) had 1.25 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.4%, followed by Episode 4×12 (Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire) with 1.22 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.6%.

BtS photo of Episode 4×12: Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire (via CBS)

There’s only one episode left: The Season 4 midseason finale-turned finale 4×13 with the German title “Apokalypse” (Save + The + Dam + World). A week later, they’ll start airing new episodes of NCIS and Bull.

Other MacGyver News
ICYMI: Prince of Cats Literary Productions announced that they will release the first of at least three OG MacGyver novels in October. The first book is titled “MacGyver: Meltdown”, written by Original MacGyver Creator Lee David Zlotoff and Eric Kelley.

There are a few fan-voting “contests” going on pretty soon. Voting for the People Choice Awards will start on October 1. The Canadagraphs Awards should also announce their categories and nominees by next week. There’s no news about the Teen Choice Awards yet (that usually takes place in August). A 2nd surfboard trophy would be nice, don’t you think? I’ll keep you posted.

MacGyver Reboot Update #119

Cast, crew and the fans are still waiting for the production to start filming for Season 5. Meanwhile, most other CBS crime and drama shows got the green light.

updated cast portraits on the offiical CBS website (August 2020)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

All you need to know about Season 5
ICYMI: A few weeks ago, Deadline reported that Fall Season for scripted shows on CBS is aimed for November and later. Even though MacGyver has the advantage of having some “leftover” episodes from Season 4, CBS might still plan to premiere the entire Friday line-up together.

With the delay of Fall Season and not much footage being ready yet, CBS is not in any hurry to promote their upcoming shows. For MacGyver, they switched the IMDb title photo to the Season 4 poster (before, it had still been the Season 2 poster). They also added Levy Tran and Henry Ian Cusick to the cast list/portraits on the official website. Sadly, they didn’t bother to update the bios of the other regular cast members. Why waste those nice photoshoot portraits? They’re already using them on the press site…

BtS photo of Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via CBS)

Meanwhile, the writers keep teasing us without saying much. On Wednesday, they tweeted that one of the new episodes will center around one of the supporting leads. This isn’t very surprising; considering that we got several episodes centering around the supporting characters every season. For Season 4, we got to know more about Russ and Riley via flashbacks, so there’s a good chance it will be Desi this time (since despite being a regular for 22 episodes so far, she never got her own flashback storyline).

What’s going to happen now?
Several scripted CBS crime/drama shows have successfully started filming: SWAT, NCIS: LA (September 3) and NCIS (September 9).

Lucas Till in Son of the South (screenshot)

On August 28, Deadline reported that Magnum PI is set to start filming on September 14. The first casting call was posted on September 3; and there have been several new casting calls this week. Besides MacGyver and All Rise, most of the other crime/drama shows have already been greenlit for production: NCIS: New Orleans (September 21), Bull (September 25), Blood and Treasure (September), SEAL Team (September), Evil (September), FBI (October), Clarice (October), CSI: Vegas (October), FBI: Most Wanted (November) and Blue Bloods (tba).

Even if filming for Magnum and Blue Bloods works out with no filming hiatus in between, it would take them about two months to finish filming 5 or 6 episodes (not counting post-production) to get on par with MacGyver for a premiere. If all goes well, they can start airing mid-November as planned. If one of the shows is delayed, we might have to wait longer.

Season 4 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) on August 21 got 3.145 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×06 (Right + Wrong + Both + Neither) on August 28 brought 2.84 million viewers; also with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) beat the rerun of Blue Bloods, reaching 2.764 million live-viewers with the usual demo of 0.3.

Tonight will be a rerun of Episode 4×09 (Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis). September 18 will have a rerun of Episode 4×10 (Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac). Starting September 25, there will be at least 5 more episodes of “The Greatest AtHome Videos” in our favorite timeslot. It’s possible we’ll get more reruns afterwards; or at least a rerun of the Season 4 Finale before the new season starts.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
On August 16, Tristin Mays had posted a short video of her working on a script while being supported by bird-in-law Pine. While we had hoped it was a first script for Season 5, it apparently wasn’t. On August 29, Tristin geo-tagged herself in Colorado; standing in snow while wearing a Christmas sweater. The assistant seen in the background indicates that she was filming on another project and the snow was probably fake. As for the location, it’s not clear if she really was in Colorado or just on a set dressed as Colorado.

On Wednesday, she posted an Insta story of her geared up covid-proof inside an airplane – not revealing if she was travelling home after filming on this secret project or travelling to Atlanta to start the mandatory quarantine and prepping for MacGyver.

Justin Hires is working on his music and his soon-to-be-released podcast episodes while Levy Tran pretty much disappeared from social media.

ICYMI: Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South screened on August 26 at the American Black Film Festival. According to IMDb, the cinematic premiere is still set for September 16; despite no trailer being available yet. There’s also no information if Lucas and/or some of his co-stars will be involved in anything regarding the promotion.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×06 (Right + Wrong + Both + Neither) had 1.20 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.3%. Episode 4×07 (Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey) made 1.16 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.2%. Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) didn’t do much better; reaching 1.17 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.1%.

New Still of Lucas Till in “Son of the South” (via IMDb)

The Season 4 episodes are followed by an episode of Reef Break and Hawaii Five-0 each; with Reef Break getting the lowest ratings of all three shows and probably dragging the others down. Just yesterday, German channel Sat.1 announced that they will pull Reef Break off the schedule; doubling up MacGyver and finishing up the season two weeks earlier than initially intended.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 4×09: Kernschmelze (literal translation: Meltdown; Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis)
  • 4×10: Shiva (Shiva; Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac)
  • 4×11: Der Gesang der Vögel (The Singing of the Birds; Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds)
  • 4×12: Staatsfeind (Enemy of the State; Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire)
  • 4×13: Apokalypse (Apocalypse; Save + The + Dam + World)

Other MacGyver News
On September 3, Prince of Cats Literary Productions announced that they will release the first of at least three MacGyver novels in October. The first book is titled “MacGyver: Meltdown”, written by Original MacGyver Creator Lee David Zlotoff and Eric Kelley. There’s no synopsis or cover page yet.

MacGyver Reboot Update #118

Cast and Crew are still waiting for the green light to start filming for Season 5. The fans are waiting for news, too.

All you need to know about Season 5
Due to the lack of any news regarding filming or a premiere date, the MacGyverWriters keep being active on Twitter; liking and sharing posts and posting their ambiguous GIF teases every Monday.

On August 5, Deadline reported that SWAT successfully finished their first day of filming. Magnum PI was supposed to start filming in August as well. That didn’t happen after a surge of new daily Covid cases in Hawaii, but they have been given the greenlight to return to production. At the moment, SpoilerTV lists a start date of October.

According to a recent article by Deadline, the NCIS franchise is gearing up as well; with NCIS: LA planning to start on September 3 while NCIS is poised for a start on September 9. The number of episodes ordered is still unclear. SpoilerTV lists the filming date for FBI: Most Wanted as November to February, indicating they only got a short season order.

While MacGyver has the advantage of having some “leftover” episodes from Season 4, CBS might still plan to premiere at least two of their Friday shows on the same day. Interestingly, the Magnum PI writers tweeted on Tuesday they’ll probably shoot 6 episodes before the first one airs – hinting at them trying to air in parallel with MacGyver. Even if they start filming at the beginning of October with no filming hiatus in between, it would take them about two months to finish filming those 6 episodes (not counting post-production).

I have expected for a while that most networks might wait with premieres until after the election. On Wednesday, Deadline reported that Fall Season for scripted shows on CBS is definitely aimed for November or later; with CBS filling the schedule with non-scripted material or older shows initially produced for All Access (e.g. Star Trek: Discovery).

Season 4 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 4×02 (Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed) on July 17 brought 3.437 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) on August 21 got 3.145 million live-viewers; also with a demo of 0.3.

Here’s the upcoming reruns schedule:

  • Friday, August 28: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (4×06)
  • Friday, September 4: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (4×08)
  • Friday, September 11: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (4×09)
  • Friday, September 18: Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac (4×10)

Starting September 25, there will be at least 5 more episodes of “The Greatest AtHome Videos” in our favorite timeslot; meaning it might be a while until we get more reruns. For now, there won’t be any reruns in October.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
Justin Hires is still in the studio; producing his third mixtape. He invited some MacGyver crew members (e.g. Jordan Heir); presumably for some additional voices in the background. Tristin Mays has been helping advertizing both her brother’s and her sister in law’s webstores; with new photos popping up every now and then.

ICYMI: Lucas Till took a short hiatus from his road trip across the country to do some ADR for his upcoming movie Son of the South. The movie screened on August 26 at the American Black Film Festival; followed by an IG Live talkback with director Barry Alexander Brown.

Lucas Till in Son of the South (screenshot)

At the moment, the cinematic premiere is set for September 16 (IMDb) resp. September 19 (Producer Eve Pomerance via Facebook), but there’s no information if Lucas will be involved in anything regarding the promotion. Even if he’s set for some interviews, it’s possible he can’t or won’t talk about MacGyver because there’s not much to say yet.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) had 1.25 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.9%. Episode 4×06 (Right + Wrong + Both + Neither) got the smallest audience for this season; reaching 1.20 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.3%. Sadly, German channel Sat.1 didn’t bother with advertizing the episode at all; focusing on their reality shows.

MacGyver Reboot Update #117

All you need to know about Season 5
The MacGyverWriters have been back in the (virtual) office since June 12. They are quite active on Twitter; liking and sharing posts. They also tease us a lot – but so far, they haven’t revealed anything significant about the upcoming season. In fact, there’s barely any news about Season 5 for now – but behind the scenes, they must be preparing as much as they can so they’re ready to start filming when they get the green light.

According to this Facebook post, they are in the process of scouting potential filming locations; e.g. at the New Covenant Church. It’s probably weird to scout locations when you’re not sure in what season and weather condition you’ll start filming, tough. It’s possible that they’ll have a very different climate that they had initially planned for when writing the scripts.

Tristin Mays for Paradise Earth Survival

ICYMI: On July 20, an article by Vanity Fair revealed the extent of the toxicity and abuse surounding cast and crew when working on a show run by Peter Lenkov. Since the article came out, they added an audio version (with a runtime of 37 minutes). The author of the article also got promoted as contributing editor on Vanity Fair, which hints at the success (and also the truthfulness) of this well-investigated article.

What’s going to happen now?
Several CBS shows were listed with production dates for August and September. On August 5, Deadline reported that SWAT successfully finished their first day of filming for the new season. Although Magnum PI was supposed to start filming in August as well, Hawaii just went into another 3-week-lockdown. Interestingly, most shows with an official filming start date listed are not produced in-house, but are co-studio productions – which hints at other studios wanting to go ahead faster than CBS.

According to an article by Deadline just released yesterday, the shows of the NCIS franchise are planning to start in September while the FBI franchise is going for October.

While MacGyver has the advantage of having some finished “leftover” episodes from Season 4, we haven’t seen any official promo yet. CBS is probably still figuring out what to air in Fall. While some networks relied on buying Canadian TV productions and delaying their Fall Season to January next year, others like CBS relied on being able to air new episodes of their own shows in the next few months. At the moment, it’s not looking good.

BtS photo of Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via Digital Ignition)

We did get some new/old material in recent weeks; e.g. a few BtS photos from filming Episode 4×09 (Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis) with a nice group photo intitially posted by Joanne Sanders back in February. Sarah Downer took pity on the fans suffering from a lack of new content and posted a BtS photo collage of Lucas Till in his Halloween costume for Episode 2×05 (Skull + Electromagnet).

While browsing the IMDb crew list, I also managed to find some new/old concept renderings and props illustrations and set photos of Season 4. On this Phoenix Offices plan, you can see that both Russ and Matty are supposed to have offices. Maybe we’ll finally get to see them in Season 5.

Here’s the upcoming reruns schedule:

  • Friday, August 21: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (4×05)
  • Friday, August 28: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (4×06)
  • Friday, September 4: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (4×08)
  • Friday, September 11: tba
  • Friday, September 18: tba

What are Cast and Crew up to?
A few weeks ago, Levy Tran was looking at new apartments in Atlanta. According to her realtor, Levy is a proud homeowner now. Justin Hires is back in the studio; producing his third mixtape. Tristin Mays has been helping advertizing both her brother’s and her sister in law’s webstores. Lucas Till took a short hiatus from his road trip across the country to do some ADR for his upcoming movie Son of the South. Since the days leading up to his 30th birthday, there hasn’t been any new photos or videos about his whereabouts or how he spent his big day.

Story Editor Teresa Huang attended a screenwriter panel for WeScreenplay. She revelead that she attended MIT and got a degree in chemistry, so it will be interesting to see if the show turns a bit more scientific over time.

Sad news for Leanna fans: According to this article, Reign Edwards will head back to her former job at CBS soap The Bold and the Beautiful, so more appearances on MacGyver seem rather unlikely. Interestingly, the post has been deleted.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×03 (Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck) did very well in Germany with 1.53 million live-viewers and a market-share of 5.8%. Episode 4×04 (Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin) is set in Germany. As expected, there were quite a few comments about it on social media (especially due to the episode being set in Karlsruhe, but using footage of Heidelberg). The episode had 1.42 million live-viewers and a market-share of 5.4%.

Lucas Till in the studio for “Son of the South” (via Abbey West Recording)

On contrary, Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) got the smallest audience for this season; reaching 1.25 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.9%. In my opinion, this is not very surprising since the TV channel has been gearing up for their new season of Promi Big Brother; completely neglecting to promote MacGyver on their social media accounts since Episode 4×02.

The lack of promo combined with hot weather and the possibility to watch the new episodes a week beforehand on their own media library seems a weird strategy to me; especially when considering that the first few episodes of Season 4 had very good ratings.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 4×06: Deal mit dem Teufel (literal translation: Deal with the Devil; Right + Wrong + Both + Neither)
  • 4×07: Mörderisches Date (Murderous Date; Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey)
  • 4×08: Akte 47 (File 47; Father + Son + Father + Matriarch)
  • 4×09: Kernschmelze (Meltdown; Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis)
  • 4×10: Shiva (Shiva; Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac)

MacGyver Reboot Update #116

After the bombshell news of Peter Lenkov being fired and Lucas Till speaking up about a work environment of abuse, everything quieted down again. Cast and Crew are waiting for the green light to start filming for Season 5.

Roadtrip Day 23 (via Mike Milligan)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

A new Showrunner for Season 5 (encore)
The MacGyverWriters have been back in the (virtual) office since June 12. They are a lot more active on Twitter than in recent years – maybe also to gloss over the upsetting reports surrounding the show in recent weeks.

ICYMI: (Former) Showrunner Peter Lenkov was fired by CBS; dismissed despite having a year left on his overall deal. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news; stating that the dismissal happened after an investigation into multiple claims that Lenkov created a toxic work environment. On July 20, an article by Vanity Fair revealed how toxic this work environement really was and how appalling and abusive Lenkov’s behavior towards cast and crew.

Roadtrip Day 18 (via Mike Milligan)

According to Vanity Fair, Lucas Till had already complained about Lenkov’s behavior to HR in 2017 with no results. After another complaint in May this year, CBS finally decided to look into it. Sources told writer Maureen Ryan that Lucas paved the way to finally put an end to Lenkov’s tyranny. It’s rare for people to speak up on record and even more rare for the lead of an ongoing show to do so. Lucas put his career on the line to stand up for what is right, and it’s probably due to his name attached that this article has been making waves for several days on social media and news sites.

What’s going to happen now?
During the investigation, CBS had already set the wheels in motion to remove Peter Lenkov as quickly as possibly if needed. The timing is interesting, since several former writers of Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver hinted at a revealing article being in the works just after the news broke that Lenkov had been fired. It’s very likely that this article and Lucas speaking up (instead of being an anonymous source) triggered the cascade of Lenkov being fired instead of being reprimanded.

New/Old Season 1 Costume Design Illustration (via Daniel Wheeler)

It’s not clear what incident led Lucas to reach out to HR again in May. But more people and companies have reached out to the author of the article willing to talk, so there might be some follow-up articles and reveals coming. And there might be more personnel changes for Season 5. According to Vanity Fair, Co-Executive Producer Jeffrey Downer is no longer with the show. Several crew members who had ties to Lenkov or spoke up about him; dismissing the claims as lies on social media, have been let go. It’s possible there might be “collateral damage” and an overhaul of entire crew departements (e.g. Jeff Downer’s daughter Sarah who has been working as a costumer on the show since 2017).

So far, every new Co-EP and Co-Showrunner brought in new people they’ve already worked with in the past. New Showrunner Monica Macer will probably also bring in new directors, producers and crew. Additionally, CBS has committed to bring more diversity to the network.

Both SWAT and Magnum PI are listed with production dates for August. On July 24, Henry Ian Cusick attended an online panel for “Comic Con at Home” (since San Diego Comic Con had to be cancelled); hosted by Entertainment Weekly under the title “Brave Warriors”. He mentioned that filming for MacGyver is planned to resume in August as well, but at the moment, it doesn’t seem very likely.

While MacGyver has the advantage of having a few finished “leftover” episodes from Season 4, they might have to retool the show again to adapt to the pandemic safety guidelines. The focus might be more on character development than on stunts or relationships. Therefore, the “break” between the already filmed Season 4 episodes and Season 5 might be still noticeable; especially with an additional showrunner change.

Pre-Roadtrip excursion in May (via Nick Till)

It will be interesting to see how they’ll manage the gap. They might just re-write the previously intended Season 4 finale and make the actors carry the same hairstyle to ease the shift between the seasons (which means both Lucas and Tristin would have to go back to their Season 4 looks). The easiest way would probably be another time-jump (which is not what I wish for). With Lenkov gone, they could try to reverse some of the storylines and bring old characters back, but that’s maybe too much of a hassle. Let’s wait and see, I guess.

Some fans are still worried that CBS might drop the leftover episodes, but if CBS intends to hold onto any kind of a limited Fall schedule, they don’t have much of a choice. Even with Lenkov’s name attached and Lenkov probably preparing for a lawsuit, the material already belongs to CBS.

Season 4 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of the Season 3 Finale Episode 3×22 (Mason + Cable + Choices) had 3.480 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×02 (Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed) on July 17 brought 3.437 million live-viewers, also with a demo of 0.3.

BtS photo of Episode 4×02: Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed (via Lucas Till)

There’s no reruns listed until August 21. There might be some more schedule changes, but at the moment, it will be a rerun of Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan).

What are Cast and Crew up to?
A few weeks ago, Levy Tran was looking at new apartments in Atlanta, so I guess she’s preparing to move back to the area as soon as they get notice on a filming start date. Lucas Till is still on his road trip across the country with brother Nick, roommate Mike, manager Tom and some friends they pick up along the way. Justin Hires has been working on some more music and just announced he’s starting a podcast.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: The Free-TV-Premiere of Season 4 in Germany (4×01: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix) had 1.43 million live-viewers and a market-share of 5.2%. A week later, Episode 4×02 (Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed) managed 1.30 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.9%.

Episode 4×03 (Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck) did very well with 1.53 million live-viewers and a market-share of 5.8%. It did better than Reef Break and even Hawaii Five-0 (which almost tanked with a new episode at 10pm, which is very unusual). The channel might tweak the schedule a bit, but MacGyver should be safe.

Episode 4×03: Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck (via SpoilerTV)

Contrary to the other seasons, they only air one episode instead of two; probably to stretch out the weeks with new episodes. The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 4×04: Wettlauf mit der Zeit (literal translation: Race against Time; Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin)
  • 4×05: Der Kaufmann (The Merchant; Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan)
  • 4×06: Deal mit dem Teufel (Deal with the Devil; Right + Wrong + Both + Neither)
  • 4×07: Mörderisches Date (Murderous Date, Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey)
  • 4×08: tba (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch)

There’s also reruns of Seasons 2 and 3 on both Swiss and Austrian TV channels, so the reboot is apparently doing well enough to keep it on the evening and night schedule.

MacGyver around the World
The Season 3 DVD was released in several countries outside the US recently. The international versions contain a Gag Reel and Deleted Scenes. Season 4 had its premiere in the UK on July 26 (on Sky One).

Looking Back at Season 4 (III) – The Official Stills (Part 3)

As with the previous seasons, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each episode of Season 4; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. Generally, Season 4 has been good regarding promo, but it was a bit of a nuisance to compile all the Stills unmarked and in HD quality.

Episode 4×12: Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire (via KsiteTV)

If you missed Part 1 (Episodes 4×01 to 4×04), you can find it here. For Part 2 (Episodes 4×05 to 4×08), you can go there.

Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (Still Photographer: Mark Hill)
For this episode, we got 10 “real” Official Stills on the CBS press site; all of them featuring the main mission team in the control room of a power plant. Interestingly, Getty Images has actually 11 (but watermarked) Stills taken by Still Photographer Mark Hill while SpoilerTV released 5 and KsiteTV released 10.

Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via Mark Hill/Getty Images)

MY FAVORITE: The one with MacGyver. It’s an important scene for character development.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: While this episode has a big impact on MacGyver and his mental health; it’s actually a Riley background story episode. Yet, Riley didn’t get her own Still. She’s just part of the group staring at a computer screen.

Episode 4×10: Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac (Mark Hill)
For Episode 4×10, we got 9 Stills on the press site; all of them featuring the main mission. Only 4 watermarked Stills are available via Getty Images while 5 are on SpoilerTV. You can find them all on KsiteTV.

Episode 4×10: Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac (via SpoilerTV)

MY FAVORITE: The one with MacGyver and Tesla. Sadly, also the only one that has Mac in it.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: This is my favorite episode of the season and there’s only one Still of MacGyver (that’s not even up on Getty Images). And no other Still of the guest stars? It’s the craziest episode so far in the Reboot and they didn’t do anything with it promo-wise. I guess they didn’t want to spoiler too much with the Stills, but it was already stated in the press release that it will be a “dreamland” episode and that Mac will meet his mother.

Episode 4×11: Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds (Erika Doss)
Episode 4×11 delivered 12 Official Stills; all of them featuring our lead hero and the Merchant in a fake Chinese prison. 6 watermarked Stills are up on Getty Images; with What2Vue having 7 and KsiteTV having all of them in unmarked glory.

Episode 4×11: Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds (via CBS)

MY FAVORITE: Who doesn’t like a dirtied up Mac sitting in a prison cell? Who cares if it’s fake, right?

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Everything is so dark and dirty and depressing in here… also, all the Stills are in the same setting, so some fans might find this a bit boring.

Episode 4×12: Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire (Mark Hill)
We got 11 Official Stills for this episode. About half of them feature Mac on a run and meeting Auntie Gwen and her friends in the woods. The others have Mac and Riley with Shiva at another Codex hideout with Gwen and the Codex head of security. Getty Images has 8 Stills up, while SpoilerTV has 6 of them and KsiteTV has 10.

Episode 4×13: Save + The + Dam + World (via Jeri Ryan News)

MY FAVORITE: MacRiley and Auntie.

BONUS STILL: MacGyver in the woods. It’s seems like such a simple photo, but it isn’t. Also, I like the colors.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing to be disappointed about. There’s MacRiley and the guest stars and some Stills taken while filming an important scene.

Episode 4×13: Save + The + Dam + World (Nathan Bolster)
We got a set of whopping 34 Stills in total for this episode. Fittingly, 13 of them are “real” Stills while the rest consists of screenshots. The “real” Stills have the mission team out in the woods. Getty Images has 9 Stills up, while SpoilerTV has only 5 of them. Thankfully, KsiteTV saves the day again by having them all up on their site.

Episode 4×13: Save + The + Dam + World (by Nathan Bolster/CBS)

MY FAVORITE: Desi’s expression is exactly how I feel about the writers deconstructing the character of Desi in Season 4 (from kick-ass Phoenix agent to moody ex-girlfriend-now-again-girlfriend who complains about everything and doesn’t trust MacGyver).

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Stills taken out there in the woods are always nice, so nothing to complain about the “real” Stills. It’s also nice to provide Stills with the guest stars. I’m not too fond of adding too many screenshots of the same scene, though. The lighting isn’t getting any better just because you add five screenshots instead of one or two.

Looking Back at Season 4 (II) – The Official Stills (Part 2)

As with the previous seasons, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each episode of Season 4; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. Generally, Season 4 has been good regarding promo, but it was a bit of a nuisance to compile all the Stills unmarked and in HD quality.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (via KsiteTV)

If you missed Part 1 (Episodes 4×01 to 4×04), you can find the post here. For now, I’m keeping up the rhythm of writing bi-weekly Update posts, so these posts looking about the Official Stills will be peppered in between.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (Still Photographer: Mark Hill)
For this episode, we got 14 “real” Official Stills on the CBS press site; all of them featuring the main mission during the soccer game. Later, they added 6 screenshots featuring scenes inside the Phoenix Foundation (War Room, lab, interrogation room).

Getty Images has 10 (but watermarked) Stills taken by Still Photographer Mark Hill while SpoilerTV released 8. Service Note: If you want them for your collection, KsiteTV is the only site that has all 20 Stills (including the screenshots) available with no watermarks.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (via SpoilerTV)

MY FAVORITE: The one with Mac and Bozer. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the two working together in a field mission. Thinking about it, this might actually be the only “real” Official Still of Season 4 that features both of them.

BONUS STILL: MacGyver undercover as a paparazzo? I totally believe it. Give Lucas a movie role as photographer, paparazzo or photo journalist, please.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Pretty people in front of rich colors, so nothing major to complain about. A BtS group photo of the main mission cast would have been nice, though. Or one of the casino scene that was featured in the previews.

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (Jace Downs)
For Episode 4×06, we got 13 Stills on the press site; all of them featuring the main mission. They later added 4 screenshots of Matty being interrogated. 8 watermarked Stills are available via Getty Images while 5 are on What2Vue.

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (via What2Vue)

MY FAVORITE: The one person on the right is very happy. The one on the left isn’t.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing to complain here since Stills during the filming of the field missions are usually more interesting than ones from War Rooms and Interrogation Rooms.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (Mark Hill)
Episode 4×07 delivered 13 Official Stills; all of them featuring our heroes in the episode title – although one of them is actually a BtS photo of Lucas Till with the guest stars. Collecting them was a bit of a hassle: 10 of them are up on Getty Images; with KsiteTV having 8 unmarked Stills and SpoilerTV having 5. To get your hands on all of them, you had to also check the Twitter and Instagram feeds of the official MacGyverCBS accounts.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via KsiteTV)

MY FAVORITE: Pretty people having a nice time for once.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Riley and Aubrey have pivotal roles in this episode, yet Riley is only in one Still from behind with Aubrey already pushed out of focus; sealing his characters fate. Also, no Still for the MacRiley fans.

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (Nathan Bolster)
We got 16 Stills for this episode. Half of them feature Mac, James and Mason traipsing through the woods while the other half have the trio together with guest star Jeri Ryan within one of the hideouts for Codex. Getty Images has 15 Stills up, while SpoilerTV has 11 of them. Thankfully, KsiteTV has all 16. Later, CBS added 2 screenshots of Matty in the War Room, once alone and once with Team Phoenix.

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (via KsiteTV)

MY FAVORITE: A wild Mac appears in the woods. I really like the lights and the coloring.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing to be disappointed about. I do wonder though if Meredith Eaton’s agent calls CBS every time after new Stills have been released since they keep adding screenshots of scenes with Matty as an afterthought. In fact, both Bozer and Matty barely got any Stills this season so I’m already curious about Season 5 and if that’s going to change.

(More coming soon.)

MacGyver Reboot Update #112

The Reboot has been renewed for Season 5. So far, there’s not much to report on.

BtS photo of Episode 4×02: Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed (via Levy Tran)

On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall Schedule in a virtual Upfronts presentation. MacGyver will return with the other Fall shows, in its usual timeslot (Fridays, 8pm). There is no premiere date yet because “Fall” can mean any date between the end of September and November. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season (which isn’t much):

  • The rest of the episodes already filmed for Season 4 will be used for Season 5.
  • There is no further information yet about the number of episodes being ordered.
  • According to Justin Hires, there’s no filming date yet.
  • Teresa Huang revealed on May 8 that she joined the crew as Story Editor.
  • According to an Instagram post by Rain Management (that was later edited), Jim Adler joins the show as Co-Executive Producer while Monica Macer joins as Co-Showrunner.
  • There’s no new key art nor a new production SAK logo yet.

Some unfinished movies and TV shows (mostly outside the US) have resumed filming, but most of the blockbuster projects won’t go back into production before September.

How the pandemic could affect Season 5
This week, Hollywood submitted a COVID-19 Reopening Plan from studios, unions and producers to the NY and CA governors; with CBS Studios being a participant. They’re very similar to the Georgia safety measures released in May and might lead to changes not only in production, but also in storylines, guest stars, settings and locations.

Depending on the current protocols, it won’t be as easy to fly in guest stars and/or directors from abroad (e.g. if they worked on another project just before). The guidelines recommend to reduce the number of Extras and of scenes being filmed in public locations (since those are not as easily controlled).

Episode 3×17: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

While not specifically adressed in the Georgia guidelines, they might reduce the number of fighting scenes and/or intimate scenes, because if one of the main cast gets sick or needs to be in quarantine, production would need to go on hiatus for at least 10 days – unless they can rewrite the script and “eliminate” the character from the episode, which is unlikely.

The pandemic might also reduce the numbers of episodes ordered for TV shows in general – not just because of delayed filming for some shows, but mainly because the safety measures include a lot of protective gear (e.g. masks) being used while sharing of crew equipment as well as costumes should be eliminated.

The guidelines also ask for periodic and regular temperature checks and testing plus enforced physical distancing between both cast and crew (e.g. by limiting the number of passengers in transportation vehicles to two). This will not just increase the cost of production and post-production, but might also slow it down.

Episode 3×17: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (Official Still via CBS)

What’s going to happen now?
I’m assuming that a virtual writers rooms is already in progress and that CBS is planning safety protocols for their TV shows getting ready to film. Yet, all the planning only helps so much in a pandemic; not to forget that the guidelines were set up before the protests (and the potential surge in corona cases).

For now, it’s all a waiting game. We did get some new material from the recently aired episodes; e.g. via Levy Tran’s IMDb page. CBS also released another segment of the Main Cast Zoom Call; e.g. talking about being locked in a room with Murdoc, Helman and Mason and if they’d rather film a steamy scene or a stunt scene.

Episode 3×19: Friends + Enemies + Border (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

At the moment, there’s reruns of Season 3 episodes scheduled for most Fridays; with occasional reruns on Saturdays. Here’s the current schedule:

  • Friday, June 5: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (3×17)
  • Friday, June 12: Friends + Enemies + Border (3×19)
  • Friday, June 19: No Go + High Voltage + Rescue (3×20)
  • Saturday, June 27: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum (3×21)
  • Friday, July 3: tba

So far, there’s no information about a Summer show airing Fridays in our favorite timeslot, but some networks (e.g. CW) have bought Canadian productions to air new material between reruns.

BtS photo of Episode 3×15: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (via CBS)

Season 3 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 3×18 on March 20 generated a live-audience of 5.34 million viewers with a demo of 0.7, which was unusually high (probably due to the pandemic). The rerun of Episode 3×15 (K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit) on Friday, May 22 got 4.31 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.4.

A day later, the rerun of Episode 3×06 (Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc) had 1.79 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.1. These audience numbers weren’t all that great, but Saturday ratings are rarely impressive, and the amount of live-viewers was still higher than for 2 out of the 3 other broadcast networks.

BtS photo of Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (via David Dastmalchian)

What are Cast and Crew up to?
In recent years, we used to have some events in May and June to look forward to; e.g. the Monte Carlo Television Festival (2017), the Corus Entertainment Upfronts in Toronto (2017 and 2019) or the voting for the Teen Choice Awards. This year, there’s not much to report on. With the pandemic and the lockdowns in many US cities, cast and crew mostly stayed home in the last few months.

Therefore, there’s not many sightings and news about upcoming projects. Justin Hires currently releases a new song every Monday and just finished the script for a movie. For Lucas Till, a few new/old BtS photos plus two unofficial Stills for his upcoming movie “Son of the South” have surfaced. He’s also been protesting in the streets of Atlanta and using his social media accounts to speak up about human rights – very fitting, considering the movie is about the Civil Rights Movement.

Official Still for “Son of the South” (via Austin Prince)

Other MacGyver News
ICYMI: The title sequence for Season 4 is nominated for the AICP Post Awards in the Category “Graphic Design & Animation”. The event will be held online on June 10. We have some other MacGyver-related news as well:

  • With 7.5 million viewers per episode according to Nielsen ratings, the Reboot made Rank 32 on the list of most-watched TV shows in the US in the 2019/20 season.
  • No prestigious award, but the Reboot was the most popular show on SpoilerTV in May.
  • The Season 4 Premiere in the UK (on Sky) was postponed to June 7, then to June 14.
  • The Season 3 DVD in German-speaking countries will be released on July 16 – and there will be bonus material!

Looking Back at Season 4 (I) – The Official Stills (Part 1)

Promo-wise, Season 4 was very good to MacGyver fans. Besides interviews and featurettes for the premiere, we got all the episode titles in advance and a new photoshoot in the middle of the season. Also, there were more Official Stills than for previous seasons and a preview plus several Sneak Peeks for every episode.

Episode 4×01: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (via SpoilerTV)

As with the previous seasons, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each episode of Season 4; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. (Because I just can’t keep quiet, as you all know by now.)

Episode 4×01: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (Still Photographer: Mark Hill)
For the Premiere of Season 4, we got 26 Official Stills on the press site. A lot of them were actually screenshots. Getty Images has 8 (but watermarked) Stills taken by Still Photographer Mark Hill while What2Vue released 20.

Episode 4×01: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (Mark Hill/CBS via Getty Images)

MY FAVORITE: The one with Mac and Desi. There’s an urgency in Mac handling the shovel, while Desi seems unsure but wanting to help.

BONUS STILL: The one with Mac and Russ on top of the post was the first Official Still we got for Season 4. Part of our introduction into the new season we waited so long for.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: A few more Stills instead of screenshots for the Season Premiere would have been nice, but we got like 6 Stills for the Season 3 Premiere back then, so no reason to keep complaining.

Episode 4×02: Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed (Guy D’Alema/Mark Hill)
It’s rather unusual to have 2 Still Photographers on set, but this was the first episode they filmed for Season 4, so they probably wanted to catch the excitement during the first days of filming.

For Episode 4×02, we got 15 Stills on the press site. 14 are available via Getty Images while 11 are on What2Vue. Interestingly, they later added 3 screenshots of Meredith Eaton as Matty.

Episode 4×02: Red Cell + Quantum + Cold + Committed (via CBS)

MY FAVORITE: It’s art, no? Also, the only Still not available on Getty Images, probably because it was used for a First Look preview in the TV Guide magazine.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Pretty looking people in various locations. Nothing to complain here.

Episode 4×03: Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck (Mark Hill)
The third episode only delivered 9 Official Stills (which is still more than we got on average for previous seasons). SpoilerTV granted us 8 unmarked Stills. Surprisingly, none of them are available on Getty Images.

Episode 4×03: Kid + Plane + Cable + Truck (via SpoilerTV)

MY FAVORITE: Mac in a plane. We all know how he feels about heights, right?

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: The young guest star has a pivotal role on the episode. He would have deserved to be in one of the Stills without having his face half-hidden behind Desi.

Episode 4×04: Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin (Mark Hill)
We got 12 Stills for this episode. Most of them feature Mac and/or Riley on the mission in Germany, with Desi joining them in 2 of the Stills. Getty Images has 7 Stills up, while What2Vue has 6 of them. Interestingly, KsiteTV has 19 since they added the photos and screenshots posted on the official social media accounts the day the episode aired.

Episode 4×04: Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin (via What2Vue)

MY FAVORITE: MacGyverisms are hard work.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: So much MacRiley. Not disappointing at all.

(More coming soon.)

MacGyver Reboot Update #111

The Reboot has been renewed for Season 5 – and we will already get to watch new episodes in Fall, hopefully!

Schedule Announcement for Season 5 (via CBS)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

All you need to know about Season 5
On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall Schedule in a virtual Upfronts presentation with a pleasant surprise for MacGyver fans: Contrary to some other networks, CBS plays it safe for advertizers with little changes in their schedule; going for stability. Also, the Reboot – who had been benched to midseason last year – will return with the other Fall shows, in its old timeslot (Fridays, 8pm).

CBS Schedule Overview for 2020/21 (via CBS)

Note that “Fall” can mean anything between end of September and November at the moment. As reported by Variety, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl didn’t rule out the possibility that there might be changes if some shows fail to restart production in Summer. Therefore, he stayed rather vague in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

There’s a lot we don’t know. We are certainly hopeful we can get into production this summer and we are hopeful that these shows will premiere in the fall. I don’t anticipate a traditional Premiere Week where 90 percent of our shows start the third week of September; I think that’s highly unlikely. At the same point, we are hopeful these shows will premiere at some point this fall. (…) The fall will not look like a traditional fall but that doesn’t mean we can’t have shows there.

(Kelly Kahl via Hollywood Reporter, May 19)

Thankfully, MacGyver is rather safe with already having 6 “leftover” episodes in the can and therefore it doesn’t require to start filming in July. With Magnum PI being filmed in Hawaii, they could still start airing in Fall on their own, even if Blue Bloods (that films in NY) might be delayed.

BtS photo of Episode 4×13: Save + The + Dam + World (via Scottie Thompson)

Of course, we’re all interested in the amount of episodes we’ll get for this season. There is no further information yet if the episodes filmed for Season 4 are part of the Season 5 episode order or not (e.g. if we get 6 already filmed + 13 new episodes or 13 episodes in total or a full season of 22 episodes in total). According to Kelly Kahl, he aims for full seasons:

(…) we may find that they simply run out of time and for some shows, it might mean 20 vs. 22, depending on when they start. Our hope is for full seasons of all of these shows. We’ve spoken to them and all understand there may be limitations to what can be accomplished this season.

(Kelly Kahl via Hollywood Reporter, May 19)

Guess all we can do for now is wait and see. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season (which isn’t much):

  • The rest of the episodes already filmed for Season 4 will be used for Season 5 (see further down for more information).

What’s going to happen now?
May and June are usually the months when scripts get written, edited and approved. The writers plus Showrunner Peter Lenkov are pretty quiet, so there might already be virtual writers rooms going on in the background.

BtS photo of Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via Levy Tran)

Since production was shut down in the middle of Episode 4×20, it’s possible that the scripts for these last few episodes will get re-written a bit or shuffled to later in the season (depending on what story-arc they have planned for Season 5 overall).

There’s no key art nor a new production SAK logo yet for Season 5, but they might exchange the headers on the official social media accounts soon. For the schedule announcement, they used an Official Still of Episode 4×08. We can only hope that we get some more promo or BtS photos during hiatus. With 6 episodes already filmed, they’d have already enough material for Stills, posters and even a teaser trailer – but from past experience, CBS was never keen on putting out material too early; especially without a definite premiere date.

We did get some new material from the recently aired episodes; e.g. via Levy Tran’s IMDb page. Also, they released two more segments of the Main Cast Zoom Call; e.g. talking about how they’ve been handling the lockdown due to the pandemic and who would have most likely joined Codex.

BtS photo of Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (via David Dastmalchian)

Starting today, there’s weekly reruns of Season 3 episodes scheduled for most Fridays; with additional reruns on two Saturdays so far. Despite Press Releases, CBS keeps cancelling some of the planned reruns (e.g. 3×16 on May 29) for other broadcasts. Here’s the current schedule for the upcoming reruns:

  • Friday, May 22: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (3×15)
  • Saturday, May 23: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (3×06)
  • Friday, June 5: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (3×17)
  • Friday, June 12: Friends + Enemies + Border (3×19)
  • Friday, June 19: tba
  • Saturday, June 20: tba
  • Friday, July 3: tba

As mentioned before, it’s rather unusual for CBS to air reruns of older seasons. And even though the ratings of these reruns won’t matter as much, maybe talking about it on social media is not a bad idea. Also, some attention to these episodes might give us more reruns and some never-seen-before BtS material?

Episode 3×15: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (Official Still via What 2 Vue)

Also, this is a good way for new fans to catch up on some backstory stuff. Episode 3×15 is the introduction of Levy Tran as Desi, while Episode 3×06 has Mac’s ex-girlfriend Nasha (Sibongile Mlambo), Jack Dalton (George Eads) and Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) – who could all make another appearance in an upcoming episode, theoretically.

MacGyver Audience Numbers Overview (graph by DashboardOnFire)

Comparing the average ratings to last season, Season 4 lost about 4.84% in demo and only 0.43% in live-audience numbers; which is the lowest demo-loss compared to last year within all scripted CBS shows (26 in total). Not bad for a show that got benched to midseason, huh.

The infos for the upcoming episodes were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by people working on the show or taken from IMDb (cast and crew info), from SpoilerTV (press releases) and from The Futon Critic (airdates).

Other MacGyver News
ICYMI: Here’s the overview of all the blog posts for the MacGyverisms in Season 4 by Tech Consultant Rhett Allain. We have some other MacGyver-related news as well:

  • There’s finally a release date for the Season 3 DVD in German-speaking countries (July 16) and there will be bonus material, yay! (Deleted Scenes for 8 episodes plus a Gag Reel)
  • Season 4 will premiere in the UK on May 31 (Sky)
  • The title sequence for Season 4 is nominated for the AICP Post Awards in the Category “Graphic Design & Animation”. The event will be held online on June 10.

In recent years, we used to have some events in June to look forward to; e.g. the Corus Entertainment Upfronts in Toronto or the start of the voting for the Teen Choice Awards.

There might be a digital Upfronts presentation by Corus this year, but the event in Toronto itself (that Lucas has attended twice so far) has been cancelled. The voting for the Teen Choice Awards might still happen. The show won one of the famous surfboards last year, so it would be nice if it entered the race again this year and could add another one to the collection.
