What are Cast and Crew up to?
Lucas Till had been on promo tour in Europe for his movie Son of the South, but some interviews are just being released now. Watch a 20-minute-interview done in Berlin here.

After his return to the US, Lucas sort of disappeared again. We did get a new sighting in Atlanta on September 25, thanks to Stefano Smith (who had been a set medic on MacGyver for several seasons). On Wednesday, he visited a football game (of the team that is coached by his cousin Bryan).

Levy Tran has been cast in Expendables 4. We don’t know yet how big her part will be, but the Expendables franchise is a big international success and might get her cast in other action-heavy movie roles. She already arrived in London; posting several photos of visiting the British Museum and doing some sightseeing.

ICYMI: Tristin Mays has been filming a production with pirates, dancing and singing. The production is called “Master of the House”, but there’s not much information about it.

Otherwise, there’s no casting news to write about. Justin Hires keeps doing stand-up-comedy-shows; e.g. in Hollywood. Henry Ian Cusick will visit Comic Con Liverpool next month.

CBS Fall TV Season Ratings
Fall Season on CBS started on September 20. So far, 15 shows have premiered. Since last Friday, MacGyver‘s previous time slot is occupied by SWAT.

Lets take a look at the average ratings of the Friday Line-Up. Why is this of interest for us? Simply put: A network cares about money. The better MacGyver looks in comparison to the current schedule, in streaming numbers and in syndication, the more appealing the show looks to CBS; even in hindsight. They might try to squeeze out a few more bucks by selling the rights.

Lucas Till and Bryan Till (via Richmond Raiders)

Of course, they only aired one episode each so far, but the Friday schedule on CBS has a tendency to achieve stable ratings over the season so there won’t be many ups and downs over the next few months.

  • SWAT (Friday, 8pm) has moved from Wednesdays 10pm to make room for the revival of CSI: Vegas. The show premiered with a demo of 0.42 in the important demo group of 18 to 49 year olds and 4.859 million live-viewers.

Verdict: Last year, SWAT premiered in November with a demo of 0.44 and only 2.75 million live-viewers. Its fate will depend on the co-producing network. But considering it had an average of 3 million live-viewers per episode last season and therefore a whopping gain of 53% in audience with the premiere this season, it might end up being the winner of the Friday line-up if the show manages to keep these numbers steady.

  • Magnum PI (Friday, 9pm) premiered with a series low; reaching a demo of 0.39 (-25% compared to last year) and a live-audience of 5.226 million live-viewers.

Verdict: While the demo in premiere week was the lowest of all CBS shows, it still managed a rather good audience number.

Till Family Outing (via Richmond Raiders)

Since it’s a co-production, it might depend on how long NBCU is willing to pay for it. Even if renewed, it could lose its time slot next season.

  • Veteran show Blue Bloods (Friday, 10pm) premiered with a demo of 0.45 (-15%) and a live-audience of 6.297 million viewers. Like lasth year, it does meh for demo, but good in audience numbers.

Verdict: The live-audience loss compared to last season is marginal. Blue Bloods is old and expensive, but it has international and syndication deals in place.

The live-viewers numbers probably aren’t as important anymore since it’s still bringing in a lot of money.

The Reboot is in syndication now; airing double reruns on CW26 (Chicago area) on Saturdays (5-7pm local time) or on CBS (WGCL) Atlanta (12-2am).

Son of the South won an audience award (Prix du public long métrage) at the “Festival International du Film de Fiction Historique” in Toulouse, France. The DVD was released last month in German-speaking regions. Contrary to the US version, the DVD contains about 45 minutes of bonus material; including an interview with Lucas done remotely a few months ago.

ICYMI: Ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov participated in Episode 14 of the Podcast The Working Writer. About 38 minutes in, he talks about the MacGyver Reboot; mainly about the Unaired Pilot.

The Houston premiere for the second production of the MacGyver The Musical has been set for February 2022. You can check the dates and book tickets here.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
ICYMI: Lucas Till has been on promo tour in Europe for his movie Son of the South. He attended the German premiere in Berlin plus the screening and Q&A in Munich. On September 8, he attended the Deauville Film Festival (Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville). They did a photoshoot plus interviews on the next day. One interview with Lucas and co-star Sharonne Lanier has been uploaded on YouTube last weekend.

As far as I know, there are no other events planned in Europe. According to AlloCiné, the cinematic premiere in France has been pushed to December 1st. Therefore, it might be a while until we get to hear, see and/or read the rest these interviews.

Tristin Mays has been filming a production with pirates, dancing and singing; serving beer mugs and sailing a ship. The production is called “Master of the House”, but there’s not much information about it. Maybe a short movie? There are several of Tristin’s friends attached that have worked on short movies and parodies before.

Ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov participated in Episode 14 of the Podcast The Working Writer. About 38 minutes in, he talks about the MacGyver Reboot. He states that he had already set his mind on doing Magnum PI next and that CBS called him to look at the Unaired Pilot and give his opinion about it because they were worried about sending it to then-CEO Les Moonves for approval.

He states that CBS gave him the option of firing the entire cast if he wanted, but that he kept Lucas Till and George Eads because he saw the potential big-brother-little-brother dynamic that had worked so well on Hawaii Five-0. (Though it also sounds a bit like he kept Lucas based on his potential looks, the way he mentions his long hair several times.)

He says that he didn’t think the pilot was bad writing, but that it didn’t feel like MacGyver. And that he got the series (aka a 13 episode order) greenlit based on him putting together a 5-minute sizzle reel of what he show could be like; stating that this was “sort of insane”.

The #SaveMacGyver Movement
The panels for the MacGyver Con were up until yesterday. The panels had covered a lot of interesting topics. I don’t know if they will later be uploaded somewhere else.

Since September 9, there was a new set of digital billboards out (nearby headquarters of streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon); running until September 17.

Yesterday, fans celebrated the 5-year-anniversary of the premiere of the MacGyver Reboot; posting old BtS material and remembering how they met new friends online due to the show. It was fun going through my vault, reminiscing about a time when CBS still had money for decent promo *ahem*.

What’s going to happen now?
The first Fall shows on CBS premiered on September 20. Starting October 1, MacGyver‘s Friday slot will be occupied by SWAT – which should have made room for reality competition show The Activist on October 22. After a lot of backlash, The Activist was pulled (without giving a new premiere date). The show will be retooled as a documentary.

Initially, it had been planned for SWAT to take over the slot of SEAL Team as soon as ST has been moved to Paramount Plus. For now, it looks like SWAT will stay on Fridays 8pm until further notice.

Maybe CBS tries a “wait and see” approach. As mentioned before, they sit on two returning shows that haven’t found a timeslot yet: Amazing Race and Blood + Treasure. Also, CSI Vegas is supposed to be a limited series of 10 episodes, but that might change if it turns out to be a ratings hit. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how the Friday shows will fare in ratings this year.

Apparently, the Reboot has been good enough for syndication; airing double reruns on CW26 (Chicago area) on Saturdays (5-7pm).

MacGyver Reboot Update #155

The panels for the virtual MacGyver Convention are still available to watch! Also, Lucas Till is promoting the release of Son of the South in Europe.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
ICYMI: Lucas Till is on promo tour in Europe for his movie Son of the South. On August 25, he attended the German premiere in Berlin alongside fellow actress Nicole Ansari-Cox and director Barry Alexander Brown. Four days later, he joined Barry and Nicole for the screening and a Q&A in München.

The movie had its French Premiere on September 8 at the Deauville Film Festival (Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville). Lucas attended the event in France alongside fellow actors Sharonne Lanier, Matt William Knowles and director Barry Brown. Matt and Barry attended screenings of other films as well.

They did the usual “festival press cycle” (meaning a photoshoot plus interviews) on the next day. There was another screening yesterday afternoon, but I don’t think the cast attended.

While the “big” festival activities with the A-List stars are mostly happening in Venice right now, Deauville still attracts a crowd of photographers and journalists for the European market. As far as I know, there are no other events planned in France (or Europe). According to AlloCiné, the cinematic premiere in France has been pushed to December 1st. Therefore, it might be a while until we get to hear, see and/or read these interviews.

Justin Hires has packed up his “Atlanta crib” last week, so he’s apparently not planning on working on another Atlanta project in the near future. The film Levy Tran was working on has wrapped filming on September 2. Otherwise, there haven’t been any official news about new projects for the cast. I’m still hoping on one of them popping up as a guest star on one of the upcoming Fall shows.

On September 8, Monica Macer joined WeScreenplay for “Cocktails & Conversation”, a podcast talking about the industry and the writing process.

The panels cover a lot of interesting topics. Tristin Mays talked about what it was like to film scenes with Billy Baldwin as Riley Davis’ biological father.

Season 5 Writers for the MacGyver Con (Screenshot via SaveMacGyverHQ)

Henry Ian Cusick revealed that due to covid circumstances and shutdowns, some of his lines in scripts were given to Tristin while he was in quarantine. Another time, he had to speak some of the lines that had been initially intended for Meredith Eaton. Kate Bond talked about where she could have seen her character going in the show if she hadn’t been written out.

For the Writer’s Panel, some of the writers are wearing the striped pajamas that were handed out by Bozer on the Season 5 Finale Episode. For additional info about the MacGyver Convention, check here.

The official SaveMacGyver website also gets updated regularly; so check here to keep up with news. Yesterday, the team announced that there’s a new set of digital billboards out there (nearby headquarters of streaming sites like Netflix); running until September 17.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 5×14 (H2O + Orthophosphates + Mission City + Corrosion + Origins) got 0.9 million live-viewers, followed by Episode 5×15 (Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal) with 0.84 million live-viewers. Both episodes had a market-share of 3.5%.

Episode 5×15: Abduction + Memory + Time + Fireworks + Dispersal (via Tristin Mays)

On average, a Season 5 episode had a German audience of about 0.83 million live-viewers, which is quite a bit lower than the 1.30 million viewers for Season 4. As mentioned before, the lack of promotion by the network this year certainly didn’t help.

What’s going to happen now?
CBS continues airing a mix of reality shows on Fridays; dropping the Magnum PI reruns on Saturdays in favor of SWAT reruns.

The first Fall shows will start airing in about two weeks. The trailers had been released yesterday. MacGyver‘s Friday slot will be occupied by SWAT which will make room for The Activist on October 22, a Global Citizen competition series that will run for 5 weeks.

There has been quite the backlash after the announcement; with statements that activism shouldn’t be a competition that falls on being popular on social media and the like. Of course, the SWAT and Magnum PI fans aren’t happy either (either dreading the potential hiatus or the dropping ratings).

As always, the schedule could still change midseason. CBS sits on two returning shows that haven’t found a timeslot yet: Amazing Race and Blood + Treasure. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how the other Friday shows will fare in ratings this year.
