MacGyver Reboot Update #131

After two weeks of reruns, we get new episodes for three consecutive weeks; starting today!

Episode 5×04: Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (via CBS)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about Season 5 storylines and characters by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion, you can find me on Twitter and on the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

What you need to know about Episode 5×04 (MAC419)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×04 (Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason). It was written by Justin Lisson and Sophia Lopez and directed by Peter Weller. This episode was filmed with production number MAC419 (Banh Bao + Drill + Burner + Mason) back in February and March last year.

We got the Press Release and a first Official Still on December 21. In case you need a refresher, here’s the synopsis again:

Mac’s meeting with Desi’s parents goes sideways when her brother finds himself in trouble and desperately needs their help. Also, Russ and Matty must ask an old nemesis for assistance when their new recruitment candidate is kidnapped.

This episode sees the return of Guest Star Peter Weller as Elliot Mason. Interestingly, this is also the first and only credit for guest star Ben Wang (who plays new recruitment candidate Eli).

CBS released 9 Official Stills on January 4; all about MacGyver and Desi getting into trouble again. You can find 7 tagged Stills on Getty Images and 8 untagged Stills on Seat42F. A day later, we got 3 Sneak Peeks; one of them the scene of MacGyver meeting Desi’s family. As expected, it’s not going too well.

There was barely any BtS material when they filmed the episode, so I hoped for more material coming in by the cast and the guest stars, but it wasn’t much. Co-Showrunner John Rogers (who had taken over from Terry Matalas for the back nine) gave us some insights via Twitter, though.

John Rogers about Episode 5×04: Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (via Twitter)

He revealed this to be his favorite episode and stated that he didn’t get to talk to Lucas Till very often, but that he is a “very fine Number One” (on the Call Sheet), and he would work with him anytime.

What you need to know about Episode 5×05 (MAC416)
Next Friday is the premiere of Episode 5×05 (Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO); the episode many fans have been waiting for. It was written by Jim Adler and directed by Ericson Core, who already directed Episodes 2×02, 2×22 and 4×11.

Script Title Page of Episode MAC416: Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO (via Anabelle Acosta)

This episode was filmed with production number MAC416 (Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO) back in January and February last year. It has been a topic often talked about within the fandom since the revelation of the script title page by Anabelle Acosta (who guest-starred in Episode 5×01).

Of course, fans discussed the possibility of “Jack” being another work tool and not a person, but George Eads’ former stunt double Reece Fleetwood being seen on set of Season 4 had fuelled the fire. Note that Fleetwood is credited on IMDb for this episode as stunt actor and not as stunt double. He’s also credited for Episodes 4×06 and 5×02.

Episode MAC416: Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO (via Lavonda Barineau Till)

Lucas Till’s stepmom had visited the set with her kids and revealed a few days later that Lucas’ dad has a guest role in it. Initially, she had stated on Facebook that we should look out for Episode 4×14 before she deleted the photos and locked her profile (after fans had flocked her page and started commenting on the post).

These photos were the reasons for the hubbubb about this episode, because it shows what looks like a military funeral scene with other BtS photos of what looks like a wake at Mac’s house. Sadly, we haven’t gotten a Press Release yet, so keep your eyes peeled for a trailer after tonight’s episode ends. It looks like the speculations will continue at least until the Press Release or the first Official Stills. (Note that this is the only CBS show with no Press Release and/or a First Still for next week.)

What you need to know about Episode 5×06 (MAC502)
While information about Episode 5×05 has been scarce, they already started the promotion for the “Quarantine Episode”; airing on January 22.

After a first spoiler-teaser via TVLine on December 29, we got the Press Release and the First Official Still on January 4. A day later, CBS revealed in their Notes for Nerds Newsletter that MacGyver will write a song dedicated to his favorite immunologist.

I get that the “new team” prefers advertizing the newly-filmed episodes, but it’s a bit disapppointing that they still keep the lid on BtS material for upcoming episodes in general. Ex-Showrunner Peter Lenkov might not post anymore about the show, but there should be a ton of BtS material sitting on these CBS servers. Also, it would help to get the fans excited for the newly-filmed episodes as well (since we’ll still have to wait until February or longer for these “new” episodes to air).

Season 5 Overview
Here’s an overview of the upcoming Season 5 episodes. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West, by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).

  • 5×04 (MAC419): Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (January 8)
Written by Justin Lisson and Sophia Lopez, directed by Peter Weller

Remember that episode titles and episode order are not definite until an official Press Release by CBS.

Episode 5×06: Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (via CBS)

We don’t know yet if all filmed episodes will be aired (e.g. episode MAC420 that was still in the middle of being filmed when production shut down). For now, I sorted the other episodes by production number:

  • (MAC417): Golden Lancehead + Venom + Blood + Baggage
Written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by David Straiton
Presumed guest appearance by Aly Michalka (Frankie)
  • (MAC418): SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini
Written by Cindy Appel, directed by Yangzom Brauen
Presumed guest appearances by Jorge Garcia and Robert Patrick
  • (MAC420): Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt (unfinished production)
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore
  • (MAC503): tba
Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano
  • (MAC504): tba
    Presumably written by Teresa Huang

Note that due to the recent Covid-19 surge, most of the LA productions have agreed to extend their Holiday Hiatus. Several talk shows went back to film on make-shift studios in the homes garages of the hosts. It’s not clear yet if the LA Unit for MacGyver (where Meredith Eaton films) has been affected as well.

Season 4 Reruns
To recap: The rerun of the Season 4 Premiere (Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix) on December 25 brought 3.108 million live-viewers with a 0.3 demo rating. A week later, the rerun of Episode 4×07 (Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey) got 3.056 million live-viewers; also with a 0.3 demo rating.

There is a rerun of Episode 4×04 (Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin) scheduled for January 29.

Working on Episode MAC504
To recap: Writer Teresa Huang had posted on December 11 that she’s remotely prepping her episode that will be filming in January (presumably MAC504).

Episode 5×04: Banh Bao + Sterno + Drill + Burner + Mason (via Gloria Tsai)

According to a post by Steven Serna, they were supposted to resume work on Wednesday, but I haven’t seen any indication that they started filming until today. Hussein Agamiri uploaded an Instagram Story with the crew set up for filming before a narrow, but high square – maybe an elevator shaft? – with a green screen on top.

Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
There have been no new (public) Casting Calls since November 12. I’m assuming they either switched casting agencies or stopped having open Casting Calls for unknown reasons (since Central Casting Georgia still has dozens of Casting Calls for “The Resident” every week).

MacGyver Season 5 Swag (via Dana Till)

ICYMI: The Reboot was on Rank 15 for the list of most popular shows of 2020 on SpoilerTV. TAlso, the poll about Episode 5×03 made Rank 4 on the list of most popular “What Did You Think Of” polls last year. The Press Release for Episode made Rank 22 of the most popular articles in December on SpoilerTV.

Mama Till showed us the the MacGyver swag she got for Christmas; e.g. three different masks. One of them has a clever logo of the Phoenix defeating Codex.

Additionally, the trailer for Lucas’ upcoming movie Son of the South got officially released on YouTube with dozens of different accounts posting it. Movie Trailers Source as the account with the most followers got about 47’000 views so far. So far, there has been nothing by the official US distributor (Clear Horizon Entertainment) or the official movie accounts. Let’s hope we get an official release date soon.

MacGyver Reboot Update #119

Cast, crew and the fans are still waiting for the production to start filming for Season 5. Meanwhile, most other CBS crime and drama shows got the green light.

updated cast portraits on the offiical CBS website (August 2020)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

All you need to know about Season 5
ICYMI: A few weeks ago, Deadline reported that Fall Season for scripted shows on CBS is aimed for November and later. Even though MacGyver has the advantage of having some “leftover” episodes from Season 4, CBS might still plan to premiere the entire Friday line-up together.

With the delay of Fall Season and not much footage being ready yet, CBS is not in any hurry to promote their upcoming shows. For MacGyver, they switched the IMDb title photo to the Season 4 poster (before, it had still been the Season 2 poster). They also added Levy Tran and Henry Ian Cusick to the cast list/portraits on the official website. Sadly, they didn’t bother to update the bios of the other regular cast members. Why waste those nice photoshoot portraits? They’re already using them on the press site…

BtS photo of Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via CBS)

Meanwhile, the writers keep teasing us without saying much. On Wednesday, they tweeted that one of the new episodes will center around one of the supporting leads. This isn’t very surprising; considering that we got several episodes centering around the supporting characters every season. For Season 4, we got to know more about Russ and Riley via flashbacks, so there’s a good chance it will be Desi this time (since despite being a regular for 22 episodes so far, she never got her own flashback storyline).

What’s going to happen now?
Several scripted CBS crime/drama shows have successfully started filming: SWAT, NCIS: LA (September 3) and NCIS (September 9).

Lucas Till in Son of the South (screenshot)

On August 28, Deadline reported that Magnum PI is set to start filming on September 14. The first casting call was posted on September 3; and there have been several new casting calls this week. Besides MacGyver and All Rise, most of the other crime/drama shows have already been greenlit for production: NCIS: New Orleans (September 21), Bull (September 25), Blood and Treasure (September), SEAL Team (September), Evil (September), FBI (October), Clarice (October), CSI: Vegas (October), FBI: Most Wanted (November) and Blue Bloods (tba).

Even if filming for Magnum and Blue Bloods works out with no filming hiatus in between, it would take them about two months to finish filming 5 or 6 episodes (not counting post-production) to get on par with MacGyver for a premiere. If all goes well, they can start airing mid-November as planned. If one of the shows is delayed, we might have to wait longer.

Season 4 Rerun Ratings
To recap: The rerun of Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) on August 21 got 3.145 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×06 (Right + Wrong + Both + Neither) on August 28 brought 2.84 million viewers; also with a demo of 0.3. The rerun of Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) beat the rerun of Blue Bloods, reaching 2.764 million live-viewers with the usual demo of 0.3.

Tonight will be a rerun of Episode 4×09 (Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis). September 18 will have a rerun of Episode 4×10 (Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac). Starting September 25, there will be at least 5 more episodes of “The Greatest AtHome Videos” in our favorite timeslot. It’s possible we’ll get more reruns afterwards; or at least a rerun of the Season 4 Finale before the new season starts.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
On August 16, Tristin Mays had posted a short video of her working on a script while being supported by bird-in-law Pine. While we had hoped it was a first script for Season 5, it apparently wasn’t. On August 29, Tristin geo-tagged herself in Colorado; standing in snow while wearing a Christmas sweater. The assistant seen in the background indicates that she was filming on another project and the snow was probably fake. As for the location, it’s not clear if she really was in Colorado or just on a set dressed as Colorado.

On Wednesday, she posted an Insta story of her geared up covid-proof inside an airplane – not revealing if she was travelling home after filming on this secret project or travelling to Atlanta to start the mandatory quarantine and prepping for MacGyver.

Tristin Mays working on an unknown project

Justin Hires is working on his music and his soon-to-be-released podcast episodes while Levy Tran pretty much disappeared from social media.

ICYMI: Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South screened on August 26 at the American Black Film Festival. According to IMDb, the cinematic premiere is still set for September 16; despite no trailer being available yet. There’s also no information if Lucas and/or some of his co-stars will be involved in anything regarding the promotion.

MacGyver in Germany
To Recap: Episode 4×06 (Right + Wrong + Both + Neither) had 1.20 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.3%. Episode 4×07 (Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey) made 1.16 million live-viewers with a market-share of 4.2%. Episode 4×08 (Father + Son + Father + Matriarch) didn’t do much better; reaching 1.17 million live-viewers and a market-share of 4.1%.

New Still of Lucas Till in “Son of the South” (via IMDb)

The Season 4 episodes are followed by an episode of Reef Break and Hawaii Five-0 each; with Reef Break getting the lowest ratings of all three shows and probably dragging the others down. Just yesterday, German channel Sat.1 announced that they will pull Reef Break off the schedule; doubling up MacGyver and finishing up the season two weeks earlier than initially intended.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 4×09: Kernschmelze (literal translation: Meltdown; Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis)
  • 4×10: Shiva (Shiva; Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac)
  • 4×11: Der Gesang der Vögel (The Singing of the Birds; Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds)
  • 4×12: Staatsfeind (Enemy of the State; Loyalty + Family + Rogue + Hellfire)
  • 4×13: Apokalypse (Apocalypse; Save + The + Dam + World)

Other MacGyver News
On September 3, Prince of Cats Literary Productions announced that they will release the first of at least three MacGyver novels in October. The first book is titled “MacGyver: Meltdown”, written by Original MacGyver Creator Lee David Zlotoff and Eric Kelley. There’s no synopsis or cover page yet.

Looking Back at Season 4 (II) – The Official Stills (Part 2)

As with the previous seasons, I’m looking back at the Official Stills for each episode of Season 4; picking my favorites and writing down some of my thoughts. Generally, Season 4 has been good regarding promo, but it was a bit of a nuisance to compile all the Stills unmarked and in HD quality.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (via KsiteTV)

If you missed Part 1 (Episodes 4×01 to 4×04), you can find the post here. For now, I’m keeping up the rhythm of writing bi-weekly Update posts, so these posts looking about the Official Stills will be peppered in between.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (Still Photographer: Mark Hill)
For this episode, we got 14 “real” Official Stills on the CBS press site; all of them featuring the main mission during the soccer game. Later, they added 6 screenshots featuring scenes inside the Phoenix Foundation (War Room, lab, interrogation room).

Getty Images has 10 (but watermarked) Stills taken by Still Photographer Mark Hill while SpoilerTV released 8. Service Note: If you want them for your collection, KsiteTV is the only site that has all 20 Stills (including the screenshots) available with no watermarks.

Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (via SpoilerTV)

MY FAVORITE: The one with Mac and Bozer. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the two working together in a field mission. Thinking about it, this might actually be the only “real” Official Still of Season 4 that features both of them.

BONUS STILL: MacGyver undercover as a paparazzo? I totally believe it. Give Lucas a movie role as photographer, paparazzo or photo journalist, please.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Pretty people in front of rich colors, so nothing major to complain about. A BtS group photo of the main mission cast would have been nice, though. Or one of the casino scene that was featured in the previews.

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (Jace Downs)
For Episode 4×06, we got 13 Stills on the press site; all of them featuring the main mission. They later added 4 screenshots of Matty being interrogated. 8 watermarked Stills are available via Getty Images while 5 are on What2Vue.

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (via What2Vue)

MY FAVORITE: The one person on the right is very happy. The one on the left isn’t.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing to complain here since Stills during the filming of the field missions are usually more interesting than ones from War Rooms and Interrogation Rooms.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (Mark Hill)
Episode 4×07 delivered 13 Official Stills; all of them featuring our heroes in the episode title – although one of them is actually a BtS photo of Lucas Till with the guest stars. Collecting them was a bit of a hassle: 10 of them are up on Getty Images; with KsiteTV having 8 unmarked Stills and SpoilerTV having 5. To get your hands on all of them, you had to also check the Twitter and Instagram feeds of the official MacGyverCBS accounts.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via KsiteTV)

MY FAVORITE: Pretty people having a nice time for once.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Riley and Aubrey have pivotal roles in this episode, yet Riley is only in one Still from behind with Aubrey already pushed out of focus; sealing his characters fate. Also, no Still for the MacRiley fans.

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (Nathan Bolster)
We got 16 Stills for this episode. Half of them feature Mac, James and Mason traipsing through the woods while the other half have the trio together with guest star Jeri Ryan within one of the hideouts for Codex. Getty Images has 15 Stills up, while SpoilerTV has 11 of them. Thankfully, KsiteTV has all 16. Later, CBS added 2 screenshots of Matty in the War Room, once alone and once with Team Phoenix.

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (via KsiteTV)

MY FAVORITE: A wild Mac appears in the woods. I really like the lights and the coloring.

NOW THAT’S DISAPPOINTING: Nothing to be disappointed about. I do wonder though if Meredith Eaton’s agent calls CBS every time after new Stills have been released since they keep adding screenshots of scenes with Matty as an afterthought. In fact, both Bozer and Matty barely got any Stills this season so I’m already curious about Season 5 and if that’s going to change.

(More coming soon.)

MacGyver Reboot Update #111

The Reboot has been renewed for Season 5 – and we will already get to watch new episodes in Fall, hopefully!

Schedule Announcement for Season 5 (via CBS)

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about Season 5 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided. For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

All you need to know about Season 5
On May 19, CBS revealed their new Fall Schedule in a virtual Upfronts presentation with a pleasant surprise for MacGyver fans: Contrary to some other networks, CBS plays it safe for advertizers with little changes in their schedule; going for stability. Also, the Reboot – who had been benched to midseason last year – will return with the other Fall shows, in its old timeslot (Fridays, 8pm).

CBS Schedule Overview for 2020/21 (via CBS)

Note that “Fall” can mean anything between end of September and November at the moment. As reported by Variety, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl didn’t rule out the possibility that there might be changes if some shows fail to restart production in Summer. Therefore, he stayed rather vague in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

There’s a lot we don’t know. We are certainly hopeful we can get into production this summer and we are hopeful that these shows will premiere in the fall. I don’t anticipate a traditional Premiere Week where 90 percent of our shows start the third week of September; I think that’s highly unlikely. At the same point, we are hopeful these shows will premiere at some point this fall. (…) The fall will not look like a traditional fall but that doesn’t mean we can’t have shows there.

(Kelly Kahl via Hollywood Reporter, May 19)

Thankfully, MacGyver is rather safe with already having 6 “leftover” episodes in the can and therefore it doesn’t require to start filming in July. With Magnum PI being filmed in Hawaii, they could still start airing in Fall on their own, even if Blue Bloods (that films in NY) might be delayed.

BtS photo of Episode 4×13: Save + The + Dam + World (via Scottie Thompson)

Of course, we’re all interested in the amount of episodes we’ll get for this season. There is no further information yet if the episodes filmed for Season 4 are part of the Season 5 episode order or not (e.g. if we get 6 already filmed + 13 new episodes or 13 episodes in total or a full season of 22 episodes in total). According to Kelly Kahl, he aims for full seasons:

(…) we may find that they simply run out of time and for some shows, it might mean 20 vs. 22, depending on when they start. Our hope is for full seasons of all of these shows. We’ve spoken to them and all understand there may be limitations to what can be accomplished this season.

(Kelly Kahl via Hollywood Reporter, May 19)

Guess all we can do for now is wait and see. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season (which isn’t much):

  • The rest of the episodes already filmed for Season 4 will be used for Season 5 (see further down for more information).
  • According to Justin Hires, there’s no filming date yet.
  • Teresa Huang revealed on May 8 that she joined the crew as Story Editor.
  • According to an Instagram post by Rain Management (that was later edited), Jim Adler joins the show as Co-Executive Producer while Monica Macer joins as Co-Showrunner.

What’s going to happen now?
May and June are usually the months when scripts get written, edited and approved. The writers plus Showrunner Peter Lenkov are pretty quiet, so there might already be virtual writers rooms going on in the background.

BtS photo of Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via Levy Tran)

Since production was shut down in the middle of Episode 4×20, it’s possible that the scripts for these last few episodes will get re-written a bit or shuffled to later in the season (depending on what story-arc they have planned for Season 5 overall).

There’s no key art nor a new production SAK logo yet for Season 5, but they might exchange the headers on the official social media accounts soon. For the schedule announcement, they used an Official Still of Episode 4×08. We can only hope that we get some more promo or BtS photos during hiatus. With 6 episodes already filmed, they’d have already enough material for Stills, posters and even a teaser trailer – but from past experience, CBS was never keen on putting out material too early; especially without a definite premiere date.

We did get some new material from the recently aired episodes; e.g. via Levy Tran’s IMDb page. Also, they released two more segments of the Main Cast Zoom Call; e.g. talking about how they’ve been handling the lockdown due to the pandemic and who would have most likely joined Codex.

BtS photo of Episode 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (via David Dastmalchian)

Starting today, there’s weekly reruns of Season 3 episodes scheduled for most Fridays; with additional reruns on two Saturdays so far. Despite Press Releases, CBS keeps cancelling some of the planned reruns (e.g. 3×16 on May 29) for other broadcasts. Here’s the current schedule for the upcoming reruns:

  • Friday, May 22: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (3×15)
  • Saturday, May 23: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (3×06)
  • Friday, June 5: Seeds + Permafrost + Feather (3×17)
  • Friday, June 12: Friends + Enemies + Border (3×19)
  • Friday, June 19: tba
  • Saturday, June 20: tba
  • Friday, July 3: tba

As mentioned before, it’s rather unusual for CBS to air reruns of older seasons. And even though the ratings of these reruns won’t matter as much, maybe talking about it on social media is not a bad idea. Also, some attention to these episodes might give us more reruns and some never-seen-before BtS material?

Episode 3×15: K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit (Official Still via What 2 Vue)

Also, this is a good way for new fans to catch up on some backstory stuff. Episode 3×15 is the introduction of Levy Tran as Desi, while Episode 3×06 has Mac’s ex-girlfriend Nasha (Sibongile Mlambo), Jack Dalton (George Eads) and Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) – who could all make another appearance in an upcoming episode, theoretically.

About the Season 4 Ratings
To recap: Episode 4×13 generated a live-audience of 5.766 million viewers with a demo of 0.6. In the Live +7 days ratings, it gained an additional 1.39 million viewers (+24%), reaching 7.16 million viewers in total with a demo of 0.94 (+52%) when including DVR ratings.

The Reboot ended Season 4 with an average of 6.081 millions live-viewers per episode with a demo-rating of 0.67. Episode 4×08 airing on April 3 had the highest audience number (of 7.073 million life-viewers), Episode 4×07 airing on March 27 had the biggest demo (of 0.80).

MacGyver Audience Numbers Overview (graph by DashboardOnFire)

Comparing the average ratings to last season, Season 4 lost about 4.84% in demo and only 0.43% in live-audience numbers; which is the lowest demo-loss compared to last year within all scripted CBS shows (26 in total). Not bad for a show that got benched to midseason, huh.

Upcoming Episodes Overview
The infos for the upcoming episodes were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West (episode titles), by people working on the show or taken from IMDb (cast and crew info), from SpoilerTV (press releases) and from The Futon Critic (airdates).

As long as there’s no further notice, I will use the initially intended episode number and title of the episode when referring to them in this blog.

Other MacGyver News
ICYMI: Here’s the overview of all the blog posts for the MacGyverisms in Season 4 by Tech Consultant Rhett Allain. We have some other MacGyver-related news as well:

  • There’s finally a release date for the Season 3 DVD in German-speaking countries (July 16) and there will be bonus material, yay! (Deleted Scenes for 8 episodes plus a Gag Reel)
  • Season 4 will premiere in the UK on May 31 (Sky)
  • The title sequence for Season 4 is nominated for the AICP Post Awards in the Category “Graphic Design & Animation”. The event will be held online on June 10.

In recent years, we used to have some events in June to look forward to; e.g. the Corus Entertainment Upfronts in Toronto or the start of the voting for the Teen Choice Awards.

There might be a digital Upfronts presentation by Corus this year, but the event in Toronto itself (that Lucas has attended twice so far) has been cancelled. The voting for the Teen Choice Awards might still happen. The show won one of the famous surfboards last year, so it would be nice if it entered the race again this year and could add another one to the collection.

MacGyver Reboot Update #106

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, TV shows and movies have stopped production a few weeks ago; some of them already running out of new episodes to air. Luckily, we still have a few episodes of MacGyver to enjoy.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 4 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided! For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can find me on Twitter and head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

About Episode 3×18
Because of March Madness being cancelled, CBS decided to air reruns of their current shows. Interestingly, they decided on a rerun of MacGyver Episode 3×18 that had premiered back in April 2019. (Usually, CBS only airs reruns of the current season. ) Due to people following the advice of staying in during the pandemic, the rerun ratings for the Friday line-up did better than the premieres of other shows.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via SpoilerTV)

The rerun of 3×18 garnered 5.344 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.7. This is the third-best rerun audience numbers the show ever had (after reruns for Episode 1×08 and the Pilot). For comparison: The last rerun had been a repeat of Episode 3×06 back in March 2019, with an audience of 4.39 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.4.

About Episode 4×07
The episode airing a week ago is titled “Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey”. It was written by Stephanie Hicks and directed by Brad Turner (who already directed Episodes 2×13 and 3×13). We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on March 17.

In total, CBS uploaded 13 Official Stills onto their press site. 10 of the Stills are available (watermarked) on Getty Images, while SpoilerTV uploaded 5 of them in good and untagged quality. On March 25, CBS released 6(!) Sneak Peeks; all of them either of Mac and Desi preparing for or already at the location of the double-date with Riley and Aubrey.

BtS photo of Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via Stephanie Hicks)

One upside of the pandemic is people having more time to post BtS photos before the episode; e.g. via Stephanie Hicks, Haley Porch or guest star Angela Zhou. We got some more BtS photos during and after the episode; e.g. via Sarah Downer, David Shae, John J Shim or Alexander Leaty. On Sunday, we got some interesting photos giving us a closer look at the props: The chocolate bar that Mac utilized to make an explosive timer, the periscope Mac used to “spy” into the kitchen or the chemotherapy bag used on the IV for James.

Note: The chemotherapy drug name on the bag is fake (for obvious reasons), but there is an antibody drug with a similar name that is used to treat e.g. non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and rheumatoid arthritis. In general, the drug destroys both normal and malignant B cells (with a specific marker on their surfaces) and is therefore used to treat diseases which are characterized by having too many B cells, overactive B cells or dysfunctional B cells.

As far as I know, they never revealed in Episode 3×17 what sort of cancer James is suffering from; only that it’s Stage 4 (which usually means metastatic and/or treatable for symptoms, but not curable). It’s not clear though if this is an indication on James’ disease or if the prop designer simply chose a drug with a name they liked.

There were a lot of people live-tweeting while the episode aired. The Hashtag #MacGyver trended for 3 hours US-wide; reaching Rank 29 and generating an estimated 3000 tweets per hour. The episode also made TV Line‘s “Quotes of the Week“.

To recap: Episode 4×06 had 5.835 million live-viewers and a demo rating of 0.7. In the Live +7 days ratings, it gained an additional 1.46 million viewers (+25%), reaching 7.303 million viewers with a demo of 0.95 in total (+43%) when including DVR ratings. Episode 4×07 had the best ratings of this season so far; generating a live-audience of 6.720 million viewers with a demo of 0.8.

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via KsiteTV)

When compared to the other CBS shows (24 in total) after the final ratings were published (this Monday), the Reboot was at Rank 14 for both average demo and audience numbers. The demo is below the CBS average demo (of 0.691), but it’s still higher than the demo of 4 of the 7 Rookie shows this season. Also, it has the lowest demo-loss of all shows when compared to last season. Despite being “demoted” to a midseason show, it has very stable ratings overall, which might put the show at risk for staying a midseason show, but also elevates its chances of being renewed.

On March 31, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded his blog post about the MacGyverisms used in the episode.

What you need to know about Episode 4×08
The episode airing tonight is titled “Father + Son + Father + Matriarch”. It was written by Travis Fickett and directed by David Straiton (who also directed Episodes 3×10 and 4×01).

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (via SpoilerTV)

We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on March 17. Here’s the synopsis:

After Oversight is almost killed in a bombing, he recruits Mac to help him find the suspected bomber, Mason (Peter Weller). However, when Mason reveals he didn’t plant the bomb, the three team up to track down Codex, the shadow organization that set them up. Also, Mac meets his aunt Gwendolyn (Jeri Ryan).

CBS uploaded 16 Official Stills onto their website on March 21; half of them of MacGyver with James and Mason kept prisoner by “Evil Auntie” Gwendolyn with the other half of Mac, James and Mason creeping through the woods. 15 of them are up on Getty Images (watermarked), 11 untagged Stills are available via SpoilerTV.

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (via SpoilerTV)

Guest Star Jeri Ryan was featured in TV Guide Magazine as “Pick of the Week” with a short interview about her story-arc. The teaser interview and 12 Stills in total were also posted on TV Insider.

“Gwendolyn Hayes is Mac’s aunt, his beloved mother’s sister, and an ex-DXS agent who was presumed dead,” executive producer Peter Lenkov teased. “Mac never knew she existed but Gwen was always keeping track of her nephew’s life in the shadows. She is now the presumed head of Codex, the organization that the Phoenix has been hunting this season.”

“[Gwen] reminds him of his mother, and her ideals and science have merit to them. But the way she goes about it goes against everything Mac thinks and is,” he added. “Gwen’s new relationship with Mac will pit his desire for family, his faith in science, and his loyalties to his friends against each other and will make our hero rethink everything. Because of her, we will see Mac like we’ve never seen him before.”

(via TV Insider)

Yesterday, we got 3 Sneak Peeks and also a few more BtS photos (e.g. via Christopher Jon Duddy). Guest star Amber Skye Noyes is listed for several episodes on IMDb, so she’s probably part of the Codex story-arc for the first half of the season.

What you need to know about Episode 4×09
The episode airing next Friday is titled “Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis”. It was written by Brandon Botta and Casey Tollett Botta and directed by Mike Martinez (who also directed Episodes 2×14 and 3×09). We got the Press Release with the first Still on March 19. Here’s the synopsis:

While Mac’s friends surround him during his time of grief, Los Angeles’ power grid is taken hostage in a ransomware attack resulting in a citywide blackout, and the team discovers the code used was written by Riley years ago.

As revealed in the Press Release, Tate Donovan returns as Oversight. Considering he’s announced specifically, this might be his last appearance.

On March 28, they released 9 additional Stills; all of Mac, Riley, Desi and Russ in a computer room staring at screens. Adding an additional photo, 11 watermarked Stills are up on Getty Images.

More Reruns, yay
CBS has several “holes” to fill in their schedule with so many sports events, reality TV shows and other programming cancelled. That means that we probably will get to enjoy more reruns in the coming weeks. For April 18 (Saturday), CBS will air a rerun of Episode 3×16 (Lidar + Rogues + Duty) before reruns of Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-0.

A little recap since my last blog post: For Episode 4×20, they filmed scenes in the War Room, inside the Phoenix jet and outside the stage in front of a big green screen. They also shot some scene in Stone Mountain Park and on real and fake horses. Sadly, the production was abruptly halted on Friday, March 13th.

Early Wrap on Season 4 – What’s going to happen now?
Due to the pandemic, movie and TV productions have been shut down worldwide. For MacGyver, production was halted on March 13, on Day 5 out of 8 of filming for Episode 4×20. Some of the prop people, set decorators and Stand-Ins have been back to the stage location the next week to shoot inserts (probably to finish post-production for as many episodes as possible) and to wrap up the trailers and the stage locations. As revealed by an Instagram Story by Executive Producer Peter Lenkov, he’s still working on finishing Episode 4×14. So although we will get a bunch of more episodes, it’s still possible that Episode 4×20 can’t be finished in post-production and won’t be aired – at least not anytime soon.

We don’t know yet what’s going to happen with the episodes that weren’t filmed. If the show is renewed, they could either film the episodes as intended and use them for Season 5, or they could rewrite the scripts or drop the episodes completely.

Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via Mark Hill/Getty Images)

Initially, we would know about the fate of the CBS shows a day before the Upfronts in May. Right now, networks are not able to film and sell their rookie shows and they can’t finalize the Fall Schedule yet. Some of the rookies filmed and/or planned for Pilot Season might be pushed to next year or scrapped.

CBS has a dozen of shows that won’t have a season finale to air in May as initially planned; being two or three episodes shorter than ordered. Some reality shows set for Summer are on hiatus; same as the Summer crime/drama Blood and Treasure. Therefore, it’s a safe assumption for MacGyver being renewed. They might air the first 13 episodes (with the midseason finale concluding the season for now) and hold back the rest of the episodes until needed. That way, it wouldn’t matter if filming for Season 5 starts on time in July or not.

MacGyver Reboot Update #105

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, TV shows and movies have stopped production for the season. Sadly, MacGyver was cut short in the middle of filming Episode 4×20.

About Episode 4×05
Episode 4×05 (Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan) aired on March 6. It was written by Cindy Appel and directed by Duane Clark (who also directed Episodes 2×03 and 3×02). For promo, CBS had released 14 Official Stills and 3 Sneak Peeks; later adding 6 more Stills and a few BtS photos.

BtS photo of Episode 4×05: Soccer + Desi + Merchant + Titan (via CBS)

Episode 4×05 attracted 5.648 million live-viewers and got a 0.6 demo rating in the important demo group (aged 18-49 years). In the Live +7 days ratings, it gained an additional 1.3 million viewers (+23%), reaching 6.95 million viewers with a demo of 0.87 in total when including DVR ratings. Generally, the episode was well-received on social media.

We got some more BtS photos after the episode had aired; e.g. of the costumes of the guest stars by Sarah Downer. On March 10, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded the blog post about the MacHacks in this episode.

About Episode 4×06
The episode airing a week ago is titled “Right + Wrong + Both + Neither”.  It was written by Andrew Klein and directed by Roderick Davis (who also directed Episode 3×18).

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (via What2Vue)

We got the Press Release and the first Official Still on February 21. In total, CBS uploaded 13 Official Stills; all of MacGyver, Riley, Desi and Russ on the mission to save Russ’ ex. Eight watermarked Stills are available on Getty Images. On March 10, CBS posted an unmarked Still of Desi via Twitter. They released 2 Sneak Peeks by Wednesday, added 4 screenshots as new Stills on Thursday and uploaded some BtS photos on Friday.

Episode 4×06 had 5.835 million live-viewers and a demo rating of 0.7. In the Live +3 days ratings, it gained an additional 1.26 million viewers (+21%), reaching 7.10 million viewers with a demo of 0.9 in total (+36%) when including DVR ratings. Due to the pandemic and people staying home, we can expect the ratings to rise a bit higher than they usually do around Spring time.

Episode 4×06: Right + Wrong + Both + Neither (via CBS)

When compared to all other CBS shows (24 in total) at the moment, the Reboot is at Rank 15 for both average demo and audience numbers. The demo is below the CBS average demo (of 0.683), but it’s still higher than the demo of 4 of the 7 Rookie shows this season.

On March 17, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain uploaded his blog post about the MacGyverisms used in the episode.

What you need to know about Episode 4×07
As every year, MacGyver fans were prepared to endure a short break for March Madness. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the sports event has been cancelled and the schedule for MacGyver has been adjusted. Tonight will be a rerun of Episode 3×18 (Murdoc + Helman + Hit).

Episode 4×07: Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey (via CBS)

Episode 4×07 is titled “Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey” and will air a week earlier than initially scheduled, so on March 27. It was written by Stephanie Hicks and directed by Brad Turner (who already directed Episodes 2×13 and 3×13). We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on March 17. Here’s the synopsis:

A double date descends into chaos when Mac and Desi witness a murder in the back of the restaurant, and as they work to find the killer, Riley tries to keep the secret about her and her friends’ “day jobs” from her new boyfriend, Aubrey (Leonardo Nam).

Besides Leonardo Nam, there will be guest appearances by Tate Donovan (as James MacGyver), Devon Sawa (as Donovan) and the comedians Impractical Jokers who have worked with Tristin Mays before.

On March 18, CBS uploaded 13 Official Stills onto their press site; 12 of them featuring the double date of Mac, Desi, Riley and Aubrey in a restaurant plus one BtS photo of Lucas Till with the comedic guest stars. They should release a preview tonight after the rerun of Episode 3×18.

BtS photo of Season 4 (via Justin Hires)

Writer Stephanie Hicks posted a blurry BtS photo of her with Lucas Till and Sparky in the War Room. We didn’t get many BtS photos for this episode during filming, but in an interview with ET Online back in February, Lucas Till said that this will be a hilarious episode.

What you need to know about Episode 4×08
The episode airing on April 3 is titled “Father + Son + Father + Matriarch”. It was written by Travis Fickett and directed by David Straiton (who has a whopping 84 directing credits and also directed Episodes 3×10 and 4×01).

Episode 4×08: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch (via CBS)

We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on March 1. Here’s the synopsis:

However, when Mason reveals he didn’t plant the bomb, the three team up to track down Codex, the shadow organization that set them up. Also, Mac meets his aunt Gwendolyn (Jeri Ryan).

CBS hasn’t uploaded any more Stills yet, but we probably won’t have to wait long.

  • 4×19: (title tba)
    Directed by Peter Weller
  • 4×20: Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt (tbd)
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore

A little recap since my last blog post: For Episode 4×18, they filmed in and around an abandoned hospital to be set in Slovania with guest stars Jorge Garcia and Robert Patrick and a fight scene in the kitchen. For Episode 4×19, they filmed scenes in a parking lot and in the woods for several days with rain pouring down.

Working on Episode 4×19
Generally, we haven’t seen much BtS material of this episode. Maybe director Peter Weller prefers it that way and advised the cast and crew not to reveal too much. Or he simply bribed them with Gelato (as seen on Instagram stories on March 9) to wait with posting until the episode has wrapped.

BtS photo of Season 4 (via Corey Jung)

Guest Star Gloria Tsai posted several BtS photos; e.g. with the actors playing her husband and her kid. The kid actor Corey Jung also uploaded photos; e.g. with set mom Gloria Tsai and Peter Weller or with Meredith Eaton.

Working on Episode 4×20
As revealed in an Instagram Story by Evan Marsh, Episode 4×20 is titled “Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt”. It was written by Executive Producer Rob Pearlstein and directed by Christine Moore (who already directed Episode 1×19). On March 10, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton and Henry Ian Cusick filmed some scenes in the War Room. Justin and Meredith did an Instagram Live Story together, but couldn’t reveal anything about ongoing storylines.

BtS photo of Season 4 (via Meredith Eaton)

The next day, they filmed scenes with Lucas Till inside the Phoenix jet and with Stand-Ins Jordan Heir, Amanda Mazonkey and Matthew Albright outside the stage in front of a big green screen. They also shot some scenes in what looks like a hazardous containment area.

On March 12, they moved production to Stone Mountain Park; filming on seemingly abandoned train tracks in the muddy woods and in front of Stone Mountain. There was a burning car, Lucas doing stunts to get away from the bad guys and Tristin Mays and Levy Tran driving a military vehicle.

The next day, filming continued outside. They had real horses and goats on set, but Levy got to ride the “fake” horse as well. Sadly, the production was abruptly halted – and isn’t it ironic that it happened on a Friday, the 13th.

Early Wrap on Season 4
Due to the pandemic, almost all movie and TV productions have already shut down. While it first looked like MacGyver gets to finish at least the episode and wrap up filming on Wednesday this week (according to crew member Dan Emo), production was halted on March 13 after filming for the day had wrapped.

After Episode 4×06 had finished its premiere on TV, Lucas Till posted a video on Instagram, announcing together with Levy Tran that Season 4 has wrapped unexpectedly; thanking all fans and the crew for their support. The next day, more crew members posted farewell messages and saying thanks for having a great season (e.g. Easton Harper, Jessica Sanchez, Jaric Czepiel, Todd Amateau, Christopher Jon Duddy, Stand-Ins Amanda Mazonkey and Katelyn).

Screenshot of the Wrap-Up-Message by Lucas Till and Levy Tran (via Lucas Till)

Cast and crew didn’t get to wrap properly and tell everyone goodbye, but some of the prop people and set decorators have been back to the stage location on Monday to wrap up tools and clean out the trailers, grab personal things, to hand out perishable food brought in by catering and to cover up the sets and closing down. Interestingly, some of the crew were back by Tuesday to film more inserts and the Stand-Ins (e.g. Matthew Albright) on Wednesday, but we don’t know for which episode. They probably try to do post-production for as many episodes as possible.

According to a call sheet by Evan Marsh (posted as Insta Story), production for Episode 4×20 was on Day 5 out of 8 when production (or at least principal filming) was halted. Therefore, it’s possible that this episode can’t be finished in post-production and won’t be aired – at least not any time soon.

Episode 4×09: Code + Artemis + Nuclear + N3mesis (via CBS)

So, what’s going to happen now? There are several possibilities.

  • Worst case scenario: The show is cancelled. They air the finished episodes and we might be stuck with a cliffhanger and unresolved storylines.
  • Good case scenario: The show is renewed. They will air the finished episodes. Once the hiatus due to the pandemic is over, they film new episodes for another season. The unproduced episodes of Season 4 will be either dropped or the scripts are re-written and used for the next season. For Season 5, we get the order for 13 episodes with a premiere in midseason.
  • Best case scenario: The show is renewed. They will air the initially 13 episodes with the midseason finale. Meanwhile, they film the rest of the unproduced episodes as soon as possible and start filming for Season 5 with a full season order. They will air the remaining 9 episodes either after a short break on TV (interluded with reruns) or as a Fall show.

At the moment, I’m expecting an outcome between the good and the best case scenario. Right now, the networks are not able to film and sell their rookie shows. Some of them might be pushed to next year or scrapped. CBS has a dozen of shows that won’t have a season finale to air in May as initially planned; being two or three episodes shorter than ordered. The reality shows set for Summer are on hiatus; same as the Summer crime/drama shows (e.g. Blood and Treasure).

BtS photo of Season 4 (via Amanda Mazonkey)

Depending on how disastrous Pilot Season ends and how soon they can continue filming for their “old” shows currently on hold, they don’t have enough new episodes to fill the Fall schedule with, either. Therefore, there’s a good possibility that they air the first 13 episodes (with the midseason finale concluding the season for now) and hold back the rest of the episodes until needed.

Cast and Character News
Central Casting Georgia has been looking for a Hispanic Marine, for Caucasian or Hispanic Mercs and for a Male Agent. They also had a Casting Call for a Photo Double for Marcus DeAnda this week. I’m not sure yet if they’re trying to finish up on Episode 4×20 or if they’re simply filming more inserts to finish post production on earlier episodes.

To recap my last blog post about the ongoing production: Filming for Episode 4×06 had started around September 3; with the cast filming in the War Room, in the Phoenix Interrogation Room, on the Phoenix Jet and on a set dressed up as a hospital. Also, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov came to visit for a few days.

Working on Episode 4×07
Filming for Episode 4×07 started around September 13. They filmed an Upscale Restaurant Scene before the cast went almost “dark” for several days.

We did get some photos and Instagram Stories, though. They filmed in the War Room, on a set dressed up as an upscale restaurant and in an appartement. As Lucas Till revealed, MacGyver will once again bring some fire into the kitchen. On September 20, Levy Tran posted a photo of Mac and Desi for Aloha Friday. Costumer Sarah Downer later added two more shots of Levy in the Hawaiian dress.

According to the blurry photo of the call sheet, the episode it titled “Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey”. So, who’s Aubrey? According to the call sheet, he’s played by Leonardo Nam. Leonardo is about the same age as the other three mentioned in the episode title, so he could be a love interest, a friend or a relative. The call sheet hints at Mac and Desi dating and Riley being involved with Aubrey, but I guess we have to wait and see. After all, blurry snippets can be deceiving. On Tuesday, Leonardo uploaded a nice BtS photo of him with Tristin Mays, Lucas and Levy; indicating that this day was a wrap for him.

Working on Episode 4×08 and beyond
Filming for Episode 4×08 started on September 24 and included shooting at Chattahoochee Hills and in the cabin at the lake used for one of the Avengers movies. Starting Wednesday, they filmed scenes at the Yanmar Evo Center in Acworth.

Sadly, there were barely any BtS materials uploaded in the last few days. Justin Hires hasn’t been on set since Tuesday and it seems like Tristin Mays has a few days off, as well. It’s possible the episode is centered around the MacGyvers (both Junior and Senior).

Interestingly, Camille Mana stated on September 20 that she did finish her ADR (Automatic Dialogue Recording) for Episode 4×01 the week before; meaning they still have been in post-production two months after the Season premiere was filmed. Apparently, they’re not too much in a hurry.

Episode 3×01: Improvise (via Lucas Till)

Lucas Till uploaded a bunch of old photos onto Instagram Stories last week; e.g. of Episodes 3×01 (Improvise) or 3×07 (Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly). Justin Hires also must have felt nostalgic this week; uploading BtS photos from Episodes 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) and 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family).

Costumer Sarah Downer and her costume department colleagues introduced the Halloween Dress Up Days schedule and invited the fans to join in on the fun.

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
Tate Donovan (who plays James MacGyver) will be back for Episode 4×07. There will also be a guest appearance by Devon Sawa. Interestingly, George Eads’ old Stunt Double from Seasons 1 and 2 (Reece Fleetwood) is listed on IMDb for stunt work in Episode 4×06.

In the last two weeks, Central Casting Georgia has been looking for Caucasian, Hispanic or Asian Tourists, for a Caucasian Female for a Make-Up Test, for a Passerby, for a Caucasian Female in her late 30s with brown hair for a photoshoot and for TAC Guards (on several occasions). They also had Casting Calls for Female Techs, for Agents, for Asian Guards, for Assistants, for Photo Doubles (e.g. for Henry Ian Cusick or for David E. Collier) and for Stand-Ins (e.g. for Tate Donovan or for Keith David).

ICYMI: CBS recently changed the header of the show website on CBS All Access to another promo photo made back in the Season 1 photoshoot. So far, no other official promo for Season 4 has been released.

MacGyver in Germany and Austria
In Germany, Episode 3×17 (Seeds + Permafrost + Feather) on September 17 had an audience of 1.63 million live-viewers with a demo of 8.3 in the target audience of 14-49-year-olds. This is the second-highest audience number this season so far; and for the first time this season, the following episode had a lower audience. Episode 3×18 (Murdoc + Helman + Hit) still managed 1.62 million live-viewers with a demo of 8.4.

Episode 3×19 (Friends + Enemies + Border) on September 24 had also 1.62 million live-viewers, but with a demo of 7.7 in the target audience of 14-49-year-olds. An hour later, Episode 3×20 (No-go + High-voltage + Rescue) got 1.55 million live-viewers with a demo of 7.5.

Overall, the ratings are doing better in Germany than the recent ratings for Hawaii Five-0 or Magnum PI (and pretty much all the other CBS shows but NCIS). The last upcoming German Episode Titles for Season 3:

  • 3×21: Hochverrat (literal translation: High Treason; original title: Treason + Heartbreak + Gum)
  • 3×22: Auge um Auge (Eye for an Eye, Mason + Cable + Choices)

The week after, Sat.1 will replace the Reboot with new episodes of NCIS.

In Austria, every episode of Season 1 had garnered about 82’000 live-viewers back in 2017. The ratings for Season 2 aren’t as good; probably due to both a more difficult timeslot (Saturdays around 4pm) and the long airing hiatus in between. Contrary to Germany, there doesn’t seem to be a predictability to the ratings.

To recap: Episode 2×03 (Roulette Wheel + Wire) got 88’000 live-viewers; probably profiting off the Formula 1 race that had aired before. Episode 2×04 (X-Ray + Penny) dropped down to 40’000 viewers.

On September 14, audience numbers dropped again, down to 24’000 live-viewers for Episode 2×05 (Skull + Electromagnet). Episode 2×06 (Jet Engine + Pickup Truck) had 28’000 live-viewers. A week later, the episodes aired after a Formula 1 race again: Episode 2×07 (Duct Tape + Jack) got 47’000 live-viewers and the second-highest audience number of the season so far. Episode 2×08 (Packing Peanuts + Fire) had 45’000 live-viewers.

Timeslot prediction for Season 4 (encore)
Back in May and June, I listed the possibilities in what timeslot the Reboot could end up in. Here’s the recap:

  • The Reboot takes over the 1-hour-timeslot of a rookie/crime show that didn’t get a full season order, so probably premiering in January 2020. Potential slots are Mondays 9pm (in place of All Rise), Thursdays 10pm (Evil) or Sundays 10pm (Madam Secretary). This is the most likely option, but CBS has 8 midseason replacement this year; 3 of them being crime-shows. Finding a slot might be difficult if none of the rookies fails.
  • The Reboot takes over the timeslot of a show with a full season order of 22 episodes after the season finale, so probably premiering in April or May 2020. If they can’t find an open slot in Spring, it will be shoved to Summer. Both Spring shows this year were cancelled, so CBS is definitely in need of more material.
  • The Reboot takes over the 1-hour-timeslot of a show that got pulled early. This seems rather unlikely at the moment, but anything can happen in TV-Land and this has happened before (e.g. for Justin Hires’ Rush Hour in 2015).

Now that Fall Season has started, lets revisit the schedule and take a look at the premiere ratings; especially the ratings of the hour-long rookie/crime shows.

Episode 3×07: Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly (via Lucas Till)

Of course, it’s still too early to make accurate predictions, but it’s still fun to speculate and compare to other prediction sites.

  • All Rise (Monday 9pm): Premiered with a demo of 0.7 and a live-audience of 6.03 million viewers. That’s not as high as Magnum back in 2018 in the same timeslot (1.2/8.12), but people might start tuning in later into the season. On the other hand, it’s rather disappointing for a rookie show – the ratings are already lower than what MacGyver had on average per episode last season. If the show can’t get higher ratings (especially in demo), it’s probably done – and there’s a good chance they will put an established show into the slot instead of another rookie. Both MacGyver and Criminal Minds are good candidates for this slot.
  • Bull (Monday 10pm): The new season started with a demo of 0.7 and a live-audience of 6.42 million viewers. That’s about as high as expected. If the ratings don’t drop too much, it will stay on this slot. They could switch it to 9pm, though instead of having to cancel All Rise.
  • NCIS (Tuesday 8pm): The new season started very well with a demo of 1.3 and a live-audience of 12.57 million viewers.
  • FBI (Tuesday 9pm): The second season premiere had a demo of 0.9 with an audience of 8.83 million live-viewers. Even if the ratings drop, it should be safe since there’s also a spin-off in the works for midseason.
  • NCIS: New Orleans (Tuesday 10pm) did lower than expected; managing a demo of 0.7 and a live-audience of 6.66 million viewers. Its reruns could get replaced with the FBI spin-off in Spring.
  • The Season Premieres of SEAL Team (Wednesday 9pm) and SWAT (Wednesday 10pm) are next week, so there’s no ratings available yet. Both shows had a lower audience than MacGyver last season, and SEAL Team just lost its second Executive Producer while being in the middle of filming Season 3. It will be interesting to see where this goes. It seems they still might want to hold onto it.
  • Evil (Thursday 10pm) has a preliminary demo-rating of 0.7 and 4.62 million live-viewers. That is a lot less then I expected since this show had a lot of buzz and got good promo. If the show doesn’t get higher ratings (especially in demo) within the next few episodes, it’s probably done. Nevertheless, MacGyver isn’t a good candidate for this slot since it should be an 8pm show. (Even with a 9pm slot, it will be difficult to get decent ratings.) It’s more suitable for Criminal Minds or the rookie shows FBI: Most Wanted or Tommy. Since the entire Thursday didn’t as well now that The Big Bang Theory as lead-in is gone, they might even completely change the entire line-up if all the ratings keep dropping.

Other MacGyver Promo
ICYMI: “The Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day” was released on September 17. Make sure to get a copy and tell all your friends about it!

Sadly, neither the publisher nor CBS is doing any promo for it, so I guess it’s on us fans again. At least Peter Lenkov posted about it this week; also uploading screenshots of his foreword onto Instagram Stories.
