MacGyver Reboot Update #29

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on May 12, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, additional pictures) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

With only two months left until filming for Season 2 starts, the writers are working on new scripts.

Crisis averted
Thankfully, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) managed to secure better working conditions for script writers during weeks of tense negotiations, therefore avoiding a strike that would have resulted in TV show productions coming to a grinding halt and being stopped for weeks, maybe even months.

Production should go on as planned. As David Slack tweeted on May 2nd, he’s already writing on a new episode for Season 2.

Reruns
There will be a rerun of Episode 13 (Large Blade) on May 26 and a rerun of Episode 14 (Fish Scaler) on June 2.

Season 2 News
As Executive Producer Peter Lenkov confirmed on May 10, Season 2 will start in September.

What are cast and crew up to?
Peter Lenkov is gearing up for the premiere of his CBS Summer Show “Salvation” in July. Justin Hires is busy polishing his career as a stand-up comedian. Tristin Mays and Meredith Eaton recently visited one of his shows.

Comedy Club (via Justin Hires)

Because of the DVD-Release of Monster Trucks, Lucas Till had been doing promo for this movie back in April. In a video interview with TVs Talking Pictures, Lucas also talked about filming MacGyver. He revealed that George Eads is one of his best friends, that he fell asleep several times while trying to memorize his lines and that he was stressed out 8 of 9 months while shooting because he put too much pressure on himself, trying to fill RDA’s big shoes by taking on such an iconic role.

What’s going to happen now?
Next Wednesday, CBS will present their 2017-2018 TV Schedule at the Upfronts in New York. Since both Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods have been renewed as well for another season, the reboot airtime schedule probably won’t change.

Both Peter Lenkov and Lucas Till will be at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in June. Lenkov is listed as a member of the festival’s jury while it is not clear yet in what capacity Lucas will be there.

Monster Trucks Promo (via Instagram)

There has been no word yet if there will be another promo event at Comic Con San Diego (July 20 to 23) this year.

MacGyver around the world
The Reboot is or has been airing in several countries by now; e.g. Australia, Turkey, the UK, the French speaking region of Switzerland, New Zealand or the Netherlands. The show is airing soon in Japan and in France. The premiere for Germany (on Sat.1) is set for June 19.

The German dubbing of rebooted MacGyver is done by Ozan Ünal who funnily also voiced Nicholas Hoult’s character of “Beast” in the X-Men movies with Lucas Till and David Dastmalchian in “CSI Cyber“. Ünal otherwise regularly dubbs Emile Hirsch, Logan Lerman (in the Percy Jackson Series) or Ian Somerhalder. On German TV, he’s probably best known for voicing Johnny Galecki in all episodes of “The Big Bang Theory“, so this is going to be weird and interesting for me.

The Vault: Unaired Pilot
A year ago, Meg London-Boche – Assistant of Director David Von Ancken – tweeted about the MacGyver Pilot being done. Little did we know back then that the pilot would be scrapped and reshot, earning the title of being an Unaired Reboot Pilot that got rebooted.

BtS of the Unaired Pilot (via Adam Michna)

The Unaired Pilot has more or less disappeared. The IMDb page was deleted rather quickly, along with every official material that had been posted by CBS on social media. It’s difficult to predict if we’ll ever get to see this Unaired Pilot that shall not be named. It’s probably futile to hope for it being released on the Season 1 DVD.

Original Author’s Note (May 12): This is my last Update for the MacGyver Reboot – for now. I will probably continue posting somewhere else, but I have to set it up first and I don’t know yet when it’s going to be ready. (I have been writing in German on my own blog for 11 years, but I don’t want to mix up blog posts in different languages.)

A big THANK YOU to Nicholas Sweedo for letting me write on his blog. I wouldn’t have dared to do it on my own. I never thought I would be able to write so many blog-posts in another language and I learnt A LOT while doing this.

A big THANK YOU for you readers as well. I never thought these blog-posts would get so many hits. Hopefully read you soon! If you need a quick fix of MacGyver Reboot News until my next Update, you can find me on Twitter.

Original Editor’s Note (May 12): A big thanks to Andrea (Dashboard) for all her great posts and for being really nice to work with! I decided that I wanted to distance this blog from the reboot since I don’t like it and am not watching it any more. But for fans of the reboot, Andrea really is the best person out there to follow for the latest news and information, and I’m sure that her new blog will be an awesome place to go for that!

MacGyver Reboot Update #28

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on April 28, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, additional pictures) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

The MacGyver Season 1 Finale has aired. Fans don’t have to be sad, though: Filming for Season 2 should start in July in Atlanta.

(SPOILER ALERT: You will get spoilered about the Season Finale and about storylines in Season 2 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

It’s a wrap! Again?
Although cast and crew had already celebrated the official wrap party in Atlanta back in March, there was another wrap party in LA on April 22. Together with some cast and crew members of Hawaii Five-0, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov took his people bowling.

They all seemed to have a good time. Justin Hires posted several Instagram Live videos (e.g. with Lucas Till, Tristin Mays or Meredith Eaton). In one of the videos, Lucas revealed that he had mostly caught up on sleep since last seeing Justin in Atlanta. David Dastmalchian shared selfies of him with Lucas and with Joe Dante who had directed Episode 4 (Wire Cutter). Meredith posted pictures of her posing with Lenkov and Henry Winkler and with Tristin. Tristin uploaded a video of Lucas preparing for his next strike. Lucas was seen shaking hands with Hollywood Legend Hal Holbrook.

Premiere of the Season Finale
The ratings for the last three episodes have also been the lowest of the season. Although they made an effort for some additional promo for the Season Finale, Episode 21 (Cigar Cutter) had the second lowest ratings of the season so far with 6.57 million viewers (along with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo group).

Interestingly, last week’s rerun of Episode 10 (Pliers) still managed to pull in 5.13 million viewers (with 0.7 in demo).

Nonetheless, the Season 1 ratings are good. All episodes included, the show had 7.73 million live-viewers per episode, along with a 1.08 rating in the 18-49-years demo group. The reruns (10 episodes so far) had 4.45 million live-viewers per episode (with 0.7 in demo).

Season 1 Premieres and Reruns Ratings so far (put together by DashboardOnFire)

(It’s worth noting that it wasn’t just “MacGyver” losing almost a million viewers on the most recent episodes, but other Friday shows like Hawaii Five-0 or Blue Bloods as well.)

Season Finale Promo
On Season Finale day, we got a lot of promo interviews and articles – so much that I didn’t manage to cover all of it in my last Update.

Tristin Mays did an appearance on Good Day LA. Lucas did a short Q&A on Instagram for AmazonVideo. Just before the Season Finale Premiere, CBS did a live-interview on Facebook with Tristin and David Dastmalchian; including another exclusive clip and their one word to describe the Finale (devastating by David, outrageous by Tristin).

Because of the DVD-Release of Monster Trucks, Lucas had additionally been doing promo for his movie that week. In a video interview with SideWalksTV, he also talked about MacGyver and the work load, how his fan encounters changed due to the show and what’s it like to work with the cast.

Season Finale Set visit pics (via Randall Goltzman)

A while ago, there was a Boy Scouts Sweepstakes with Jake Goltzman winning the grand prize. He was invited to visit the set during the filming process of the Season Finale. Back in March, his father Randall had already uploaded many pictures onto Facebook. (You can see some of the pictures in this blog post.) On premiere day, CBS Austin aired a segment of Jake talking about his experience.

Additionally, cast and crew shared some more pictures of Episode 21 on social media; e.g. David Dastmalchian of Murdoc and Matty or Justin Hires of Bozer and “Dr. Zito”. Stunt Coordinator Jeff Wolfe posted a picture of him with Mark Sheppard and a BtS pic of him having fun with Lucas while preparing to do a scene with “suffering” Bozer. Kirk Riley shared a BtS picture of the scene in Siberia.

Character and Storyline News
On April 8, Peter Lenkov tweeted that he and Producers Craig O’Neill and David Slack had discussed the story about how Jack met MacGyver – and teased that we’ll have to wait until next season for that.

As mentioned in the last Update, Peter Lenkov revealed that next season will see Riley and Bozer having relationships with other people. So we might be introduced to new recurring characters soon; maybe even in the Season 2 Premiere.

BtS of Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via Kirk Riley)

I’ve been wondering if they’ve already filmed the entire Cairo backstory for continuity and why they haven’t already done so while filming the pilot. Breaking down the Season Finale cliffhangers with Entertainment Weekly, Lenkov stated that “The idea is that next season we’ll get to see another piece of that story, how they got out of that part of Cairo.” He also revealed that we will discover at the end of the season who MacGyver’s father is. I’m really curious who they’re going to cast in this role.

What’s going to happen now?
Kevin Marshall (Stand-In for George Eads) was still shooting inserts on a Villa-with-Pool-Location on March 31. So far, we still don’t know what these scenes were for – unless the MacGyver Reboot has a crossover with CW’s new show “Dynasty”, it’s possible that the overworked crew used the wrong social media hashtags.

For now, most of the cast is probably enjoying some free time. Meanwhile, Lenkov is busy preparing for the Finale of Hawaii Five-0 and the crew in Atlanta is working on other TV show pilots.

via Randall Goltzman

Note that there is a strike of the Writers Guild of America looming on the horizon. It’s unclear yet how a strike would influence the production of the reboot. The last time this happened (in 2007/08), production ceased for all scripted television programming for months. Many TV shows had shortened seasons due to a lack of scripts, were postponed, cancelled or had to switch to non-union writers in order to resume production.

MacGyver Reboot Update #27

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on April 14, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, author’s note) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

It’s Season Finale Friday! Fans don’t have to be sad, though: The show will come back for a second season!

Season 1 Finale Friday (via Meredith Eaton)

(SPOILER ALERT: You will get spoilered about the Season Finale and storylines in Season 2 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

It’s a wrap! Well, kind of?
Cast and crew had celebrated the official wrap party on March 19, although shooting wasn’t done yet. 2nd Unit did some additional filming on March 21.

Interestingly, Kevin Marshall (Stand-In for George Eads) was still shooting inserts on March 31. The crew was apparently awed by the location and posted several pics of the mansion and the swimming pool. Since the location doesn’t fit very well with what we’ve already seen in the previews and sneak peeks, this could get interesting. Maybe something to do with MacGyver’s father?

(Author’s Note on May 20: It seems the location was used for the filming of CW’s pilot episode of “Dynasty”.)

MacGyver or Dynasty? (via Kevin Marshall)

As always, there was still post-production-work to do. While Tristin Mays had been doing ADR (Automatic Dialogue Recording) for Episode 20 (Hole Puncher), David Dastmalchian posted a picture of Lucas being in the studio with him to do the necessary ADR work for the Season Finale. Executive Producer Peter Lenkov shared short videos while editing the last episode (e.g. MacGyver fighting off a knife attack and Riley again being attacked from behind, but this time being prepared).

Now that filming was over, the main cast and crew engaged more often on social media to tease us for the premieres of the last two episodes of the season. We got several BtS pictures with David Dastmalchian as Murdoc (e.g. in the Season Finale, with Assistant Director Cornell Willis or with Meredith Eaton’s Stand-In Saundra Coller). Cornell Willis shared BtS pictures with Lucas Till and Meredith. Justin Hires posted a picture of his character Bozer lying on the floor with a bloody shirt, stating “I hope to God I survive this episode” (I don’t think we have to worry too much about that).

Lucas and Meredith (via Assistant Director Cornell Willis)

Some of the crew also shared BtS stuff from earlier episodes. Stunt Double Caine Sinclair shared a video of the window stunt scene in Episode 15 (Magnifying Glass) while Set Costumer Christopher Opopo posted the same stunt filmed from a different angle and a picture of that day.

Premieres of Episodes 19 and 20
Ratings have been falling again. Although the episode was written by Lee Zlotoff and well received by fans, Episode 19 (Compass) had the lowest ratings of the season so far with 6.56 million viewers (along with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo group). Last week’s Episode 20 (Hole Puncher) did slightly better and garnered 6.62 million viewers (with 0.9 in demo).

Nonetheless, the ratings are still pretty good. The Season Finale not included, the show had 7.79 million live-viewers per episode, along with a 1.09 rating in the 18-49-years demo group. The reruns (nine episodes so far) had 4.37 million viewers per episode (with 0.67 in demo).

I’m no expert, but I might look more closely into the ratings in another Update (just because I like to look at data, creating graphs and pretending to know what’ I’m talking about *lol*).

Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via SpoilerTV)

Stills, Previews and Sneak Peeks
After complaining about not getting an episode-related preview for Episode 19, we did get an official trailer for Episode 20. On the other hand, we didn’t get any sneak peeks at all. The only other time this happened was for Episode 3 (Awl).

Thankfully, we got a trailer for Episode 21 as the Season Finale and a First Look by Entertainment Weekly on Mark Sheppard. Today, we also got two Sneak Peeks. One of these Sneak Peeks mentions MacGyver’s father which didn’t happen for a while. I’m pretty sure he will either play a part in tonight’s plot twist or show up in person the next season.

In another Sneak Peek via Yahoo, we see MacGyver (plus robot) trying to save Bozer’s life. Yahoo looks back at the original Dr. Zito and talks with Lucas about the differences between the two halves of the first season episodes.

Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via Entertainment Weekly)

In an exclusive clip via Entertainment Weekly, we see MacGyver and Jack on that mission in Cairo they never want to talk about (and proof that Jack has no respect for Egyptian artifacts).

Interviews and Season Finale Promo
The impending Season Finale brought on another round of promo interviews and articles. An article by CGW (Computer Graphics World) about the sound editing of the reboot revealed one of the reason behind the constant background noise (music, sorry. it’s music, of course): Atlanta has some very loudly chirping cicadas that “could betray the show’s real location”.

I’ve dealt with snow in LA for Original MacGyver. I sure wouldn’t mind some cicadas. I would even prefer them, actually. (Alas, it’s not as if I know which countries shouldn’t have cicadas.)

In an interview with Matt Carter, David Dastmalchian talked about Murdoc and his appearance in the last two episodes of the season.

Season Finale Promo (via The Wrap)

On April 11, Henry Winkler talked about what makes (Original and rebooted) MacGyver so special.

Tristin Mays did a short video interview and a photoshoot with The Wrap. She revealed that the season finale will give her character a wake up call – meaning “more training, maybe some weapons” next season. Hm. Good to know that MacGyver will soon have TWO members in his team that can wield weapons around him *ahem*.

In another video interview with Young Hollywood, Tristin talked about her visit to Hawaii last week, the possibility of another crossover with Hawaii Five-0 and Riley’s wardrobe. In the interview with TooFab, Tristin calls the Season Finale “outrageous” and mentions that she has to get into shape for next season because there will be more action.

Meredith Eaton and the rest of the cast talked about Matty and why she’s the perfect boss for the Phoenix Foundation. They also talked about their favorite moments of this first season where George Eads revealed that a lot of the puns were added (and sometimes ad-libbed) by the cast.

Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via Entertainment Weekly)

Cast and Character News
We already know that we get Murdoc and Dr. Zito for tonight’s Season Finale, so probably no more surprises. Many fans hoped for an appearance by Patricia Thornton or Nikki Carpenter. Thornton seems unlikely, but Nikki was on the Cairo mission (as mentioned in the Pilot Episode). According to a recent interview, Tracy Spiridakos wouldn’t mind to do another episode.

Peter Lenkov revealed that Season 2 will see Riley and Bozer having relationships – with other people. So we might be introduced to new recurring characters soon. Let’s hope the writers keep the relationship drama at bay, though.

Sightings
Tristin Mays garnered some instagram attention on April 5 when Peter Lenkov posted a video of Tristin arriving in Hawaii with her brother. She enjoyed some well-earned vacation days, but also attended the Wrap Party of Hawaii Five-0 which raised questions of her appearing in the show as a guest star. Maybe it was Lenkov’s way of apologizing for not getting her to Hawaii for the crossover episode (in fact, all of her and Justin’s scenes had been shot in cold Atlanta).

Episode 1×15: Magnifying Glass (via Christopher Opopo)

What’s going to happen now?
As mentioned above, the Season 1 Finale airs tonight. On April 21, there will be a rerun of Episode 10 (Pliers). Now that The Amazing Race doesn’t air on Fridays as initially planned, they will probably air reruns of the other MacGyver episodes.

Although the reboot was one of the best sold shows at the upfronts last year, it is still waiting to be released in other countries. The season renewal might help with that, though. It will air in France soon and is set to premiere in Japan in June.

The premiere date of Season 2 is not set, but it’s safe to assume it will be a Fall Premiere again; airing on Fridays before Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods. In her AMA on reddit, Tristin Mays revealed that filming the new episodes will begin on July 6. She’s already mentally preparing for “Hotlanta”.

MacGyver Reboot Update #26

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on March 31, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, additional pictures) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

Filming of Season 1 has officially wrapped. Cast and crew members are moving back home or have started working on other projects. Some of them will come back to Atlanta, though: The show has been renewed for a second season!

Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

Working on the Season Finale
Due to March Madness, there were no premieres or reruns. Cast and crew continued to work on the last two episodes of Season 1. Most scenes were filmed inside, so we didn’t get to see much of the ongoing filming process.

Nearing the end of production, many crew members took the opportunity to thank the cast members (e.g. Guy D’Alema thanking George Eads) and to express their hope to see each other working on a second season. They also posted some BtS pictures of the Season Finale and their last day of filming (e.g. Brittany Lathan). Kait C. posted a picture of the crew wearing their MacGyver team jackets. If you remember, it was Anthony Kountz who had tweeted the emblem back in February.

AD Departement (via Kait C.)

Is that a plot twist I see?
On March 19, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov provided the “last shot of the season”. Interestingly, it reminds me of the deleted scene in the pilot episode with MacGyver being in Antarctica… Reading the pilot script, I always thought it was a neat little scene that showed an important character trait of MacGyver (which fits the original, but we never really got to experience in the reboot). It will be interesting to see if they actually reshot the deleted scene (which happens near the end of the pilot) as a flashback scene, reinvented it for the season finale or if it’s an entirely new scene as some sort of plot twist in form of a little teaser (since the episode was written before the season renewal).

It’s a wrap! Well, kind of.
Justin Hires hosted a “Wrap Party Comedy Show” on March 18. On the next evening, cast and crew celebrated the official wrap party at Terminal West. We got several pics of the crew posing with Lucas Till, Justin or Meredith Eaton; e.g. of Justin with his Stand-In Kevin Marshall Pinkney or of Lucas with one of his Stand-Ins Kirk Riley. They also had a caricaturist at the party who turned the caricatures into badges as a take-home-gift.

Wrap Party / Comedy Show Collage (via DashboardOnFire)

Both Tristin Mays and George Eads were absent for both events while Lucas wasn’t seen at Justin’s Comedy show. It’s possible that Lucas and George were still filming that day while Tristin visited her “Reboot Mom” (Michael Michele) in New York.

They did some additional filming after these events. Aden Stay posted a picture of the 2nd Unit on March 21. Also, the post-production work is not done yet. Peter Lenkov posted a short Instagram Live Video of the editing process for Episode 19 (Compass) that’s airing today. He also praised David Dastmalchian’s performance as Murdoc while editing Episode 20 (Hole Puncher).

Season Renewal and other Press Releases
On March 23, CBS released the news about a season renewal on CBS Express. It’s not clear yet if the show gets a full season order of 22 episodes right away (or an initial half-season-order like last year). The schedule should be revealed on the CBS Upfronts in May. Since both Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods have been renewed as well, it’s safe to say that the show will probably air on Fridays again as part of the successful “Trifecta”.

Season 2 Logo (via Craig O’Neill)

Both the writing team and Executive Producer Craig O’Neill posted a Season 2 logo. It’s not clear if one of these will turn out to be the official one. I guess they quickly put one together individually to share the news on social media. Co-Executive Producer David Slack did some paperclip art of his own for the occasion.

We also got the press releases for the remaining Season-1-Episodes: For tonight’s Episode 1×19 (Compass) that was written by Lee David Zlotoff, for 1×20 (Hole Puncher, airing April 7) and 1×21 (Cigar Cutter, airing April 14). There will be a rerun of Episode 1×10 (Pliers) on April 21.

Stills and Previews
We got stills for both Episodes 1×19 and 1×20 plus a first still for Episode 1×21 with the press release.

Episode 1×19: Compass (via SpoilerTV)

Sadly, we only got generic previews again for the premiere of Episode 19, but at least they both were new ones featuring scenes from different angles. On the other hand, we got a lot of clips for this one. On March 30, CBS granted 3 Sneak Peeks. I’m sensing some minor drama coming up because in Sneak Peek 2, Matty questions if “Mac and Jack” should continue to work together as a team. (It will be probably resolved as quickly as Matty questioning Mac’s MacGyvering.) George Eads will make some fun of his former hit-show CSI. Additionally, we got an exclusive clip by The Wrap (which weirdly consists of the whole opening gambit sequence).

Cast and Character News
Central Casting Georgia has been looking for a lot of Extras for the Season Finale. They reinforced their search for Extras several times. Additionally, they were looking for some photo doubles for March 22.

Episode 1×20: Hole Puncher (via CBS Express)

As noted in an earlier update, tonight’s Episode 1×19 has another Original MacGyver Alum (François Chau) in it. Episodes 20 and 21 might work as a two-parter because both will feature Murdoc. Additionally, Episode 21 will feature Dr. Zito. It is interesting to note that none other than Mark Sheppard – the son of the original Dr. Zito (William Morgan Sheppard) – will have a role in the season finale.

What’s going to happen now?
As mentioned above, there are 3 Episodes left for Season 1. There will be more promo before the Season Finale since CBS46 was on set and did interviews with the cast.

The premiere for Season 2 is not set. We can assume it will be a Fall Premiere again, so cast and crew should be back on set in Summer while the writers probably start working on new scripts soon.

MacGyver Reboot Update #25

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on March 17, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, additional pictures) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

Production of Season 1 has partially wrapped. There are 3 more episodes left for us to watch. We don’t know much what’s going to happen in these, so expectations are high.

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

It’s a wrap. I think?
Justin Hires has wrapped and will be hosting a “Wrap Party Comedy Show” tomorrow. Tristin Mays also seems to have finished her part while some of the actors were still filming the Season Finale today. Although there is a new casting call for a photo double for next week, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov just posted an instagram picture with the announcement of the end of Season 1.

Of course, the post-production work is not done yet. But since the next episode won’t air until March 31, Lenkov has a bit more time than usual to edit the remaining episodes.

End of Season 1 (via Peter Lenkov)

Working on the Season Finale
There was a lot of promo going on for the Crossover Episode with Hawaii Five-0. Otherwise, it’s been quiet again. Cast and crew have been working on the last two episodes of the season and started filming the season finale last week. The few times they found a minute or two to post on social media, it was mainly Instagram Live Stories (which disappear after 24 hours) or pictures that didn’t reveal very much (e.g. of the barbecue grill at MacGyver’s home).

One thing for sure: There will be a lot of fire power, action scenes (e.g. a car chasing scene) and blood. We’ve seen several pics of Matty pointing a gun. There is also a tac team and military guys. Lucas Till posted a picture of Lee David Zlotoff visiting the set and posing with the cast. The picture reveals that Bozer will probably get hurt (and Riley might get bloody in the process). Tristin Mays showed us the proper way to put fake blood on your chest (hint: you use a straw).

Lee Zlotoff visiting the set (via Lucas Till)

Also, Bozer’s robot will make a comeback. It cuddled with Stunt Coordinator Jeff Wolfe and took a ride in Jack Dalton’s car (as seen on Robert Ratner’s Instagram Live Story). I’m assuming Jack won’t like that very much.

Premiere of the Crossover Episode
The last episode (Ruler) had earned the lowest ratings of the entire season so far (6.93 million viewers). The crossover episode (Flashlight) did better (7.73 million viewers), but lost a bit in the 18-49 demo group (1.0 instead of Ruler‘s 1.1). Overall, the ratings were good – but not as good as the promo cycle promised. Nevertheless, the Hashtag #MacGyver trended very fast on Twitter and continued to trend hours after the episode had aired. It also trended again on the weekend and on Monday in other countries (e.g. New Zealand).

The cast had joined the crossover promotion; sharing the stills, trailers, clips and articles or posting an “expensive selfie” (via Lucas Till) or a picture of Meredith Eaton with Taylor Wily. Peter Lenkov went live on Facebook to answer fan questions. The writers of Hawaii Five-0 tweeted along with the MacGyver writers.

BtS of Episode 1×18: Flashlight (via MSN)

During and after the premiere, the extras shared some more BtS pictures. Simon Rhee provided a picture of the main cast with their stunt doubles. Nik Kash (who played the scientist hanging onto a window ledge until he got rescued by Jack Dalton) posted a BtS picture of that scene and one of him posing with George Eads. Rome Flynn (Bozer’s rival) posted a BtS picture of him with Tristin Mays. We also got an adorable picture of dog Mila posing on the crossover set at the beach.

Stills, Sneak Peeks and Crossover Interviews
A day before the crossover premiere, we got some exclusive pics by MSN. After 3 episodes without any trailer previews, we got a lot of material for the crossover; e.g. ET Canada asking Lucas Till and George Eads which Hawaii Five-0 star would be the best at macgyvering himself out of a situation (apparently Daniel Dae Kim). We also got to see an exclusive trailer by Entertainment Weekly, a sneak peek by Yahoo, an exclusive clip by Mashable, a sneak peek by TV Guide and another one by Entertainment Weekly. ET Online additionally aired a short BtS sequence just before the premiere.

BtS of Episode 1×18: Flashlight (via Lucas Till)

In an interview with TVLine, Peter Lenkov talked about the connection between Jack Dalton and Steve McGarrett and that he would love to do more crossovers. He talked about the difficulties of doing a crossover with ET Online (it’s the logistics) and why – to the disappointment of many Hawaii-Five-0-Fans – only a part of the H50-Team made it into the episode.

Lenkov also wrote an article for the Hollywood Reporter; explaining why TV loves a good crossover and about what crossovers he personally deems the best.

Cast and Character News
Central Casting Georgia has been looking for a lot of Extras the last few weeks; e.g. for Baseball Fans, Techs and Agents (young, attractive and smart-looking), men with real military or tactical experience, English Mercenaries and for Arab looking men to portray Egyptians (Cairo, anyone?). They put up a new casting call today for a photo double of a caucasian woman with light brown hair.

Episode 1×21: Cigar Cutter (via Randall Goltzman)

What’s going to happen now?
We don’t know much about the remaining episodes. We finally got the title for Episode 19 (Compass) and its airdate (March 31). There are no press releases or stills so far. They have been filming on a baseball field (probably for Episode 20: Hole Puncher) and inside the same building that was used for Episode 17 (Ruler) as the CIA headquarters in Amsterdam.

There will be more promo before the Season Finale since CBS46 was on set and did interviews with the cast.

We still don’t know yet if there will be another season, but most sites are still predicting a season renewal (e.g. Movie Pilot, SpoilerTV or TV Grim Reaper).

MacGyver Reboot Update #24

Only four Episodes left on Season 1. Are you sad about the impending Finale? Don’t be, because a great villain of the original show will make an appearance!

Gearing up for the Finale
Yesterday evening I’ve written following part as my introduction for this update:

It’s been oddly quiet on social media recently. It might just be the calm before the next cycle of promo (for the crossover episode with Hawaii Five-0) hits us like an earthquake.

(See what I did there? Haha.)

Well, it’s already started. Just a few hours ago, Entertainment Weekly released the first promo trailer for Episode 18 (Flashlight).

Otherwise, it IS more quiet than usual; probably because Cast and Crew are busy with scouting, filming and editing while Executive Producer Peter Lenkov is preparing to produce another TV show this Summer (does this man ever sleep?).

Production should wrap up around mid-March. Justin Hires already sent out his invitation for a MacGyver Wrap Party Comedy Show on March 18.

For the last four episodes, there seem to be good things (and characters) waiting on the horizon. Lenkov himself revealed some interesting tidbits; e.g. that the Finale will explain some more about Cairo. On another (and kinda disappointing) note, we’ll get an episode less than expected because Episode 21 (Cigar Cutter) will be the Season Finale. Fans of the original show can rejoyce, though because none other than Dr. Zito will show up! I’m really curious who they’ve cast for this role.

Working on Episodes 18, 19 and 20
We haven’t seen many pictures of the filming process of Episodes 19 (title still unknown) and 20 (Hole Puncher), despite production filming outside several times (e.g. at Grant Park, at Morehouse College posing for MIT and at East Lake Golf Club) during the last two weeks. The few pics of the main cast so far are of Lucas Till and George Eads; George rendering fans starstruck and posing on what looks like a hospital set. Justin Hires shared a short video of the Golf Set, both him and Tristin Mays wearing golf gear. Hopefully, they’re not looking for another Malaysian doctor to help with on-the-fly-surgery.

The fact that there will be a rerun of the Murdoc-Episode tonight (1×08: Corkscrew) gives Peter Lenkov some more time for the editing process on the crossover episode (1×18: Flashlight). Thanks to his Instagram Live Story on March 2, we finally know where that cute dog will show up.

Premieres of Episodes 16 and 17
Ratings have been falling. Episode 16 (Hook) had 7.24 million viewers (along with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo group). Last week’s episode (Ruler) even earned the lowest ratings of the entire season so far (6.93 million viewers), but did better in the very important 18-49 demo group (1.1).

Both times, the Hashtag #MacGyver has been trending again while the writers engaged in live tweetings. For the premiere of Episode 16, “Billy Colton” Lance Gross joined the writer’s office.

So far, we haven’t heard anything official about a possible season renewal, and while the crossover episode with Hawaii Five-0 will most likely get good ratings, it’s probably more important that the remaining three episodes manage to pull high numbers.

While many think a season renewal is a given, it’s interesting to note that both Lucas and George (who’s never on social media anymore) have urged people to watch the newest episodes to rise the numbers.

Lucas, Justin, the Stand-Ins and crew members along with the Colton-Cast posted many never-seen-before BtS pics (e.g. of the location scouting) and videos (e.g. of the blue-van-kaboom) to make us curious about the newest episodes. There was a LOT going on on social media during the premieres, so I was a bit surprised about the lower ratings.

Stills and Sneak Peeks
As for the last episodes, there was no new preview trailer for Episodes 16 or 17. We got stills and sneak peeks for Episode 17 (Ruler), though and stills and the above-mentioned preview trailer for Episode 18 (Flashlight).

Crossover Interviews and Other Promo
Several outlets have visited Lucas and George on set of the crossover episode. The Insider played lazy and let the two guys interview each other. ET Canada pretended to be disappointed about the set visit. No beaches, palm trees or guys with their shirts off – I guess they had a point.

On February 22, CBS Watch! Magazine released the BtS video of their photoshoot with Lucas and George. The interview with Justin Hires is also available to read on the website now.

Technical Advisor Rhett Allain posted some more learning videos; e.g. about “How to use Magnets like Mac“.

BtS of Poster Promo Shoot (via Nick Tortorici)

This week, some pictures have surfaced from the Poster Promo Shoot. In case you ever wondered why I’ve never posted a picture of the official poster (besides the wall painting on Hotel Figueroa) in any of my updates: I hate it. It’s so overly photoshopped and makes Lucas look like a snotty, smirking, bratty jerk. So it was a nice surprise to see a “real” BtS picture of Lucas hanging with that parachute (looks so much better!) and to know the crew also had a lot of fun doing this shoot.

aTVfest Appearance
As mentioned in my last update, Lucas, Tristin and Justin had made an appearance at aTVfest on February 4, attending a Q&A Panel along with Peter Lenkov and Jeff Downer. If you want to check it out, you can watch the full panel over here.

The most interesting part for me was Peter Lenkov talking about the role he had intended Richard Dean Anderson to play (starts at Minute 22). For fans of the original show, it’s not that much of a surprise (although it’s not the most obvious of the most likely choices, either).

Lenkov also revealed that the character of Bozer initially really had been planned as the comedic relief and unsuspecting roommate-slash-best friend, but talking to Justin Hires had made him revise the character and integrate him into the Phoenix Foundation.

Cast and Character News
Central Casting Georgia has been looking for a lot of Extras the last few weeks; e.g. for college students, business people, men with military or tactical experience, Asian golfers, reporters, LAPD, Baseball fans, agents, techs, a waiter and a waitress, patrons and for a “Caucasian looking Brunette woman” for a still photo shoot that will be playing the wife of an actor.

Interesting to note: Sandrine Holt was listed for Episode 19 on IMDb, but her credit has mysteriously disappeared. I really hope she’s coming back this season because her storyline has never been wrapped up to my satisfaction (and it probably never will as long as they keep her being a traitor). Her usual Stand-In (Briana Lamb) has been back on set, so I’m really hoping.

Episode 1×19: Compass (via Anthony Kountz)

Also, another Original MacGyver alumn has been seen on set: François Chau who played the character “Chi” in Episode 7×05 (The Coltons). I have to admit I don’t really remember his role, but I’ve seen him in several episodes of “Lost”.

As mentioned above, Dr. Zito will make an appearance in the Season Finale. Two villains for the finale seems a bit much, but there’s a chance we’ll get to see Murdoc an episode sooner because David Dastmalchian has been in Atlanta recently.

MacGyver Reboot Update #23

Disclaimer: My original guest-post was first published on The MacGyver Project on February 17, 2017. I made some minor changes (e.g. grammar or source corrections, link corrections, additional pictures) before re-posting it on my own blog for safe-keeping.

It’s official: MacGyver will have a crossover episode with Hawaii Five-0 next month!

MacGyver goes Hawaii
In my last guest-post (Update No. 22) two weeks ago, I speculated about an impending crossover between MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0. Executive Producer Peter Lenkov has said several times (e.g. at San Diego Comic Con) that he would love to do a crossover episode. He also talked about the connection between the two shows and the potential crossover he had written into the script for the pilot episode, namely a backstory of Jack Dalton sharing history with Steve McGarrett. (The scene had indeed been filmed, but the direct reference didn’t make it into the final cut.)

Pilot Episode: The Rising (via Peter Lenkov)

My speculations manifested due to Central Casting Georgia announcing a casting call on February 2 for Asian-looking Extras; in particular Hawaiians (certified in First Aid and CPR or having real life experience as EMTs, Paramedics, Doctors, Nurses or Rescue Workers).

Not even 20 hours later, Lucas Till spilled the beans by sharing a picture of Taylor Wily on the MacGyver set in Atlanta. It didn’t take long for press releases and articles to pop up with more information. According to TVLine, the Episode called “Flashlight” will air on March 10. The story will involve Mac and the team travelling to the big Island of Hawaii to aid in earthquake-relief efforts. There, MacGyver and Jack will team with Chin Ho and Kono to rescue a group of government scientists trapped in a building on the verge of collapse.

The Earthquake Episode
So far, not that many pictures have resurfaced from either sets in Atlanta or Hawaii. But we might get to see some special promo since they did cast interviews and B-Rolls on location.

Episode 18: Flashlight (via CBS Express)

On February 4, Taylor Wily posted a short video of the MacGyver home dressed up for Mac’s birthday. On February 9, Fred Andres granted us a first look at one of the sets – although back then, it was still unclear if the main cast would actually film scenes in Hawaii or if they would stay in Atlanta while 2nd Unit got the necessary outside film material on location.

On February 13, we finally got pictures of Lucas Till and George Eads on the earthquake set at Leahi Hospital. The crew was seen lifting heavy rocks around while the Stunt Team was already filming with Stunt Coordinator Jeff Wolfe. Casey Alicino revealed the director’s name (Jonathan Brown).

On Valentine’s Day, Daniel Dae Kim posted the first official picture of the crossover team. The Press Release on February 16 brought us the first official still. Seems there was a dress code to wear shades of blue!

Working on Episodes 18 and 19
While Lucas and George were in Hawaii, the rest of Team Phoenix filmed their scenes in Atlanta (e.g. on a jet or in the lab) with the crew working behind the scenes and the guest-stars finishing ADR (e.g. Jermaine Rivers for tonight’s Episode 16). It’s nice to see that despite the hard work, the cast still takes time to pose for pictures with the Extras or with fans.

Peter Lenkov posted some videos while editing; e.g. a video of editing Hawaii Five-0 that mentions Jack and the Phoenix Foundation. Interestingly, another (now deleted) video appeared to be a huge spoiler for the ending of next week’s episode 17 (Ruler).

As Anthony Kountz revealed today, they just started working on Episode 19. It’s nice to see it will be once again an episode directed by a woman (Christine Moore).

Premieres of Episodes 14 and 15
A few days before the premiere of Episode 15, Lucas and Justin and the crew had been teasing us with BtS pictures. Cast and crew seemed especially fascinated by the robot (that will make another appearance soon).

The Reboot continues to earn good ratings. Episode 14 (Fish Scaler) managed 7.5 million viewers while Episode 15 (Magnifying Glass) got a whopping 8.05 million viewers (along with a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demo group).

BtS of Episode 15: Magnifying Glass (via Gabriel Beristain)

Since the news about the crossover episode was officially announced only hours before the premiere of Episode 15, the Hashtag #MacGyver was already trending not even 10 minutes into the episode.

The writer’s crew continued their tradition of live tweeting. Craig O’Neill posted a picture of the “new” MacGyver writer’s office which brought up another round of speculations about a possible season renewal.

Stills, Sneak Peeks and Press Releases
On February 3, we got an additional Sneak Peek for Episode 14 (Fish Scaler) via ET Online. For the Sneak Peeks for Episode 15 (Magnifying Glass), we had to wait until Premiere Day again.

Episode 16: Hook (via SpoilerTV)

We got many official stills for tonight’s Episode 16 (Hook). Sadly, CBS still witholds the previews. As for last Friday’s episode, there was no “real” preview trailer but a video put together with scenes from old episodes (e.g. Chisel or Metal Saw). We got 3 Sneak Peeks, though and therefore got to meet Mama Colton and Billy Colton – and most important: Frog Dog! For now, he’s just an Easter Egg on a painting in the background, but who knows what will happen.

So far, we haven’t seen much for Episode 17 (Ruler) besides the press release and a few stills via Getty Images. The press release for the crossover Episode 18 (Flashlight) was made available on February 17.

Interestingly, in an article about the crossover by Star Advertiser, it’s stated that the show “already has been green-lighted for a second year“. So far it’s unclear if that really means a Second Season or if some information got mixed up (because initially only 13 episodes had been ordered before the Full Season Order back in October). Since all of CBS’s Friday Night Shows are doing very well ratings-wise, it would be a no-brainer to renew them. It’s possible we won’t know before the upfronts in May, though.

Episode 17: Ruler (via SpoilerTV)

According to Broadway World, there will be a rerun of Episode 8 (Corkscrew) on March 3.

aTVfest Appearance
On February 4, Lucas, Tristin and Justin made an appearance for SCAD aTVfest. After doing some interviews, they attended the Q&A for the screening of Episode 14 (Fish Scaler), along with Peter Lenkov and Jeff Downer. Since the event took place on a Saturday, the cast worked through another weekend but still took time to post pictures and videos.

In the interview with FanBolt, Lucas revealed that he was indeed heading to Hawaii for filming. He also acknowledged Richard Dean Anderson’s involvement in the Original Show; stating that he doesn’t know how RDA handled the workload being in every scene while not having an ensemble cast like they do for the Reboot.

Cast and Character News
Central Casting Georgia did several rush calls to get their extras for the crossover episode; e.g. for Tactical Guys and for a “real EMT with experience operating a gurney”. Other casting calls included Asian and Caucasian Men to portray National Guardsmen as well as calls for Agents and “Techies”, Airport Passengers and MIT Students.

As TV Guide Magazine revealed, we will get to know the backstory between Jack and Matty and see more scenes of the Phoenix director in the field.

Peter Lenkov promised weeks ago that Sandrine Holt will be back – and look, she’s listed for Episode 19 on IMDb. Interesting. Although I still think she will show up in the Season Finale along with Nikki and/or Murdoc; especially since Lenkov also revealed that Murdoc will come back this season (and there aren’t that many episodes left to film).
