MacGyver Reboot Update #88

Filming for Season 4 has been going on for almost a month now. We already got a lot of good BtS material to help us wait until we finally get to see the episodes.

Season 4 Overview
Before we delve further into the shooting days during the last two weeks, here’s an overview of the upcoming episodes so far:

Information about cast and crew is still scarce on IMDb. They seem more careful this season not to reveal any script title pages or storylines. Also, with more than a few crew personnel changes, I’m still in the process to find the people working on the Reboot.

Working on Episodes 4×01 and 4×02
Filming for Episode 4×01 had started on Monday, July 8. While the title is still a secret, Guy D’Alema revealed that the episode is directed by Alexandra La Roche (who had already directed Episode 3×17). She only posted two photos of the episode so far – one of herself with Tristin Mays and Lucas Till and one with Henry Ian Cusick.

The cast filmed scenes in the Phoenix lab and in the War Room, on the Arcade set with the “Pizza Paradise” and inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium dressed as Cheyenne Mountain.

Episode 4×02 is titled Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix. On July 19, Lucas Till and the crew filmed scenes at Emory University, mainly at Candler School of Theology posing as venue for a Film Festival. People working nearby were pretty impressed about the scenes and also about the equipment needed. Many watched the action for quite a bit and posted photos or videos. Some were even lucky to get a photo with cast members.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov uploaded several photos while editing: One of the team in the War Room (that he deleted a few days later but then re-uploaded), one of Mac and Bozer, one of Mac while teaching a chemistry class and another one of Bozer at the Film Festival, presumably undercover as the director and presenting a movie that reads like an episode title for Season 3. Lenkov later also uploaded an additional photo of Desi pointing a gun.

On July 22, filming continued in Mac’s house as a headquarter. Meredith Eaton posted a nice photo of herself with Henry Ian Cusick. The next day had the 2nd team filming outdoors with the occasional visit by a snake. Co-Producer Terry Matalas – who had been oddly quiet since they started production – finally uploaded a First Look photo as well.

BtS photo of Season 4 (via Terry Matalas)

On July 25 and 26, cast and crew filmed a party scene in a mansion. Lucas Till sported a new haircut and a suit, looking like a weapon’s dealer at a bad guy convention. The crew celebrated a colorful “Romper Day”. Levy Tran uploaded several photos of scenes filmed at Mac’s house a few days ago and some Insta stories, revealing that Desi will be part of the undercover mission that deals with weapons and bad guys. Peter Lenkov posted a photo of Mac and Desi sitting on the stairs, labelling it with “King and Queen”.

Levy Tran had uploaded a few Instagram stories; one of them involving her stunt double wearing the same dress and tattoos. Cast and crew filmed until early Saturday morning. Some were lucky to get off work at 3am while others didn’t get to start the weekend before 6am.

BtS photo of Episode 4×02: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (via Peter Lenkov)

On July 29, filming resumed. According to Tristin Mays, she filmed several takes of running in intense heat. The crew had set up near the sewer, so many of them commented about the smell. They had a helicopter on set and filmed a stunt person hanging on a rope underneath it. On Tuesday, they continued filming stunt scenes – but this time, with Lucas Till hanging onto the rope. Apparently, he also got to crawl through and swim in the sewer.

On July 31, director Terri J Vaughn uploaded several nice group photos onto Instagram. Apparently, she attended the filming experience to learn more about her craft. It’s not clear yet if she will direct an episode soon. That day, they filmed at Fulton County Airport with Justin trying out how comfortable the seats in the pilot cabin are. They continued filming yesterday, but there’s been almost no BtS photos or videos in the last two days.

Working on Episode 4×03 and beyond
Interestingly, they seem to be allowed to use more filming days per episode compared to last season. According to director Lily Mariye, she started pre-production on the Reboot on July 19, presumably for Episode 4×03.

In other News, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain added another blog post for the MacHacks; this time for Episode 2×16 (Hammock + Balcony).

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
As mentioned before, Henry Ian Cusick will play the new regular character of Russ Taylor, a wealthy Oxford-educated ex-military. He hasn’t been sighted that often yet. For now, it’s unclear how much screentime “Russ” will have or if Ian is just keeping out of the Instagram spotlight. Interestingly, Tate Donovan (who plays James MacGyver) hasn’t been back on set so far.

In the last two weeks, Central Casting Georgia has been looking for Club Goers and Club Patrons, for employees and customers, for Upscale Cars, for people for a Mansion Party, for First Responders, Police, Generals, for Women Soccer Teams, for Cub Scouts and for a Featured Mob. They also had Casting Calls for Hispanic Wait Staff, for Bad Guys, for a Gate Agent, for Airport Background people, for Agents, for Photo Doubles (e.g. for Christopher Convery) and for Stand-Ins (e.g. for Fernando Martinez).

MacGyver in Germany
The 3rd Season premiered in Germany on July 23rd. German channel Sat.1 airs two episodes every Tuesday starting 8.15pm, followed by a new episode of Lethal Weapon. Swiss channel 3+ started airing Season 3 on a Wednesday, then airing two episodes on Fridays, followed by a rerun of Season 2.

While the 1st season had been received quite well, Austrian channel ORF1 apparently doesn’t have any plans of airing the 2nd or 3rd season any time soon.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Meredith Eaton)

Sat.1 has been struggling with ratings on Tuesdays since they changed Crime Mondays to Crime Tuesdays. Both Whiskey Cavalier and Lethal Weapon haven’t been doing as well as expected. And while Season 3 of MacGyver didn’t reach as high ratings as Seasons 1 and 2, the premiere started quite well.

Episode 3×01 (Improvise) on July 23 had an audience of 1.3 million live-viewers (3 years and older) with a demo of 8.9 in the target audience of 14-49-year-olds. An hour later, Episode 3×02 (Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship) managed 1.4 million live-viewers and a demo of 9.0. As a lead-in for Lethal Weapon airing at 10.15pm, it also elevated its ratings, reaching the best demo of the current season.

BtS photo of Episode 4×02: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix (via Lucas Till)

Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back To School) on July 30 had a live-audience of 1.2 million viewers and a demo of 7.4. An hour later, Episode 3×04 (Guts + Fuel + Hope) got 1.4 million live-viewers and a demo of 8.6.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 3×05: Tag der Toten (literal translation: Day of the Dead; original title: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family)
  • 3×06: Murdocs Rosenkrieg (Murdoc’s War of Roses; Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc)
  • 3×07: Mattys Geheimnis (Matty’s Secret; Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly)
  • 3×08: Späte Rache (Late Revenge; Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome)
  • 3×09: Probe 234 (Specimen 234; Specimen 234 + PAPR+ Outbreak)
  • 3×10: Ein neues Leben (A Neaw Life; Matty + Ethan + Fidelity)
  • 3×11: Einer lebt, einer stirbt (One Lives, One Dies; Mac + Fallout + Jack)
  • 3×12: Die Meisterdiebin (The Master Thief; Fence + Suitcase + Americium-241)
  • 3×13: Überleben in der Wildnis (Surviving in the Wilderness; Wilderness + Training + Survival)
  • 3×14: Die Hochzeitsfeier (The Wedding Party, Father + Bride + Betrayal)
  • 3×15: Cody gegen die Schmuggler (Cody against the Smugglers, K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit)

Besides TV adverts, there’s not much promo going on. The competition is bigger this year, so I’m not sure why Sat.1 doesn’t invest more time for advertizing at least on social media.

Other MacGyver Promo
The Season 2 DVD was released in France on July 24. There’s still no news about the release of the Season 3 DVD, but here’s a recap of the other upcoming MacGyver-related promo stuff:

  • August 11: Teen Choice Awards (nominations in the categories Choice Action TV Show and Choice Action TV Actor)
  • August 15: Season 2 DVD released in German-speaking regions
  • September 17: book release of “The Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day”

According to Variety, there are plans to launch a MacGyver-themed VR escape room called “MacGyverWorld” next year. More information should be coming soon.

MacGyver Reboot Update #87

Filming for Season 4 has started. We already got some good BtS material to tie us over until we finally get to see the episodes.

(Minor Spoiler Alert: You might get spoilered about characters and storylines in Season 4 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided! For daily news and to join the discussion and/or speculate away, you can head over to the MacGyverOnline Forums.)

Season 4 Overview
Filming started on Monday, July 8. For now, Season 4 will have 13 episodes with filming expected to wrap in November (unless CBS orders more episodes).

Here’s an overview of all the information about the upcoming episodes so far:

At the moment, information about cast and crew is still scarce on IMDb, but that will hopefully change soon. They seem more careful this season not to reveal any script title pages or storylines. Also, with a few personnel changes, I’m still in the process to find the new crew people working on the Reboot.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Kjaay)

In other news, both the stunt doubles for the main characters in Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI have been seen filming scenes together in Hawaii last week. It’s not clear yet if they’re doing a “full” crossover this season. But even if they are, MacGyver probably won’t be part of it – despite Lenkov and the rest of the cast talking about a crossover of all Lenkov-shows back at Paley Fest LA in March this year.

Working on Episodes 4×01 and 4×02
Filming for Episode 4×01 started on Monday, July 8. As expected, we didn’t have to wait for long for the first BtS material: Justin Hires showed us his new trailer first thing in the morning, followed by several Instagram short stories. The cast filmed scenes in the Phoenix lab and in the War Room. Henry Ian Cusick, who plays the new regular character of Russ Taylor, posted a group photo on Twitter.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Henry Ian Cusick)

Levy Tran uploaded Part 2 of “Who Stole the Bran Muffin?” via Instagram Short Stories. According to Still Photographer Guy D’Alema, it’s certainly not necessary for cast and crew to steal any food from each other since there is a lot of sweets available on the crafty table.

Guest star Emmanuelle Vaugier teased us with a glimpse of the Episode Title Page by hiding all the important info on it. While the title still remained a secret, Guy D’Alema revealed that the episode is directed by Alexandra La Roche (who had already directed Episode 3×17). We did get a title for Episode 4×02 though: Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix.

Script Title Page for Episode 4×02 (via Christopher Jon Duddy)

On July 11, Justin Hires posted another group photo taken in the War Room. They filmed scenes in Tac Gear that day. While Levy and Lucas posted Insta stories, Peter Lenkov uploaded a photo of Lucas, Levy and Ian filming, followed by a few more photos (e.g. of Mac and Russ dragging Desi away or of Mac and Russ sitting in the War Room) soon after. As it later turned out, they had their first night shoot for the season thad day.

On July 12, Lucas Till posted a BtS photo of what looks like Mac and Desi trying to steal a computer chip. Several of the cast uploaded Insta stories, while Meredith Eaton posted a photo of her with Justin. For once, we even got a clear group photo of all the current regulars which hasn’t happened since the filming of the Season 2 Finale.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Lucas Till)

On July 15, filming continued on the Arcade set with the “Pizza Paradise” we’ve already seen in several episodes. Both Tristin and Lucas uploaded several Insta stories of them having fun during the breaks. Interestingly, Lucas’ Stand-In Matthew was still sporting Mac’s long hair from Season 3. He just cut it yesterday, so it’s not clear if they filmed a flashback scene or if it hadn’t been relevant until now.

The next day, the crew set up inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Lucas Till uploaded many Insta stories, joking about storming Area 51 and revealing the set do be dressed as Cheyenne Mountain. He also might have to crawl through some poisonous gas in this episode.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Levy Tran)

Wednesday and yesterday, they filmed scenes in the War Room and in MacGyver’s house. Levy Tran posted a photo of herself with her stunt double Danya Bateman who has a copy of Levy’s tattoos on her chest and her arms.

It seems the long days have already caught up with some of the crew and cast that loves to post stories of their co-workers taking a nap on set. According to director Lily Mariye, she started pre-production on the Reboot today, presumably for Episode 4×03.

In other News, Technical Consultant Rhett Allain continued writing science notes about the MacHacks; adding a blog post for Episode 2×14 (Mardi Gras Beads + Chair) and for Episode 2×15 (Murdoc + Handcuffs).

Other Cast, Crew and Character News
As mentioned before, Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) replaced Craig O’Neill as Co-Showrunner. They also added two new female writers to the team while former writer Nancy Kiu started working on CW’s Batwoman.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Meredith Eaton)

Levy Tran has been promoted to Series Regular. Henry Ian Cusick will play the new regular character of Russ Taylor, a wealthy Oxford-educated ex-military who is a master manipulator and salesman — skilled in propaganda and lie detection with an extremely high emotional intelligence. Interestingly, he hasn’t been sighted that often. For now, it’s unclear how much screentime “Russ” will have or if Ian is just keeping out of the Instagram spotlight.

Most of the Stand-Ins are back as well. Interestingly, former Stand-In of George Eads (Michael Doggett) has been on set, too (seen in an Insta story by friend Matthew Albright). It’s possible he’s standing in for Ian which would be kinda ironic.

According to TV Line, Emmanuelle Vaugier is set to guest-star as Major Frost, a general’s assistant who appears dutiful but may in fact be committed to a nefarious cause.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Guy D’Alema)

In the last two weeks, Central Casting Georgia has been looking for Bar and Coffee Patrons (with or without car), for a Featured Bartender, for Military People, for Asian, Middle Eastern and Caucasian Bad Guys and for a Featured Soldier being unconscious and in his undergarments only.

They also had Casting Calls for Arcade Players, for Film Festival Patrons, for Guards, a Mariachi Band, for Students with Bikes and for Stand-Ins (e.g. for Levy Tran, Todd Stashwick or for Jean Elie).

MacGyver in Switzerland and Germany
The 3rd Season is starting in Germany on July 23rd. German channel Sat.1 will air two episodes every Tuesday, followed by a new episode of Lethal Weapon. As expected, Swiss channel 3+ just started airing the episodes on short notice this Wednesday, trying to lure in the Swiss viewers. They will also air reruns of Season 2 in between.

Pity that the Season 2 DVD isn’t out before mid-August. Also, Sat.1 has been struggling with ratings on Tuesdays since they changed Crime Mondays to Crime Tuesdays. Both Whiskey Cavalier and Lethal Weapon haven’t been doing as well as expected.

BtS photo of Episode 4×01 (via Peter Lenkov)

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 3×01: 50 Millionen Diamanten (literal translation: 50 Million Diamonds, original title: Improvise)
  • 3×02: Daltons Helden (Dalton’s Heroes, Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship)
  • 3×03: Zurück aufs College (Back to School, Bozer + Booze + Back To School)
  • 3×04: Atemnot (Respiratory Distress, Guts + Fuel + Hope)
  • 3×05: Tag der Toten (Day of the Dead, Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family)
  • 3×06: Murdocs Rosenkrieg (Murdoc’s War of Roses, Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc)
  • 3×07: Mattys Geheimnis (Matty’s Secret, Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly)

There have been TV adverts so far, but otherwise there’s not much promo going on. Even the official website by Sat.1 still seems to be in the process of being updated. Before, they still had “Patricia Thornton” listed as a regular character.

Other MacGyver Promo
ICYMI: Greenlight Hollywood released a second MacGyver collectible: Jack Dalton’s 67 Pontiac GTO convertible. Check out the photos and description here.

Here’s a recap of the other upcoming MacGyver-related promo stuff:

  • July 24: Season 2 DVD released in France
  • August 11: Teen Choice Awards (nominations in the categories Choice Action TV Show and Choice Action TV Actor)
  • August 15: Season 2 DVD released in German-speaking regions
  • September 17: book release of “The Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day”

According to an article from June 3, CBS has announced new licensees for its TV properties; MacGyver being one of them. Almost all crime shows shops for CBS are still down at the moment, so they might be already in the process of updating the shop pages with new fan articles.

MacGyver Reboot Update #86

Filming for Season 4 will start in 4 days. Let’s hope we get some good BtS material to tie us over until we finally get to see the episodes.

What are Cast and Crew up to?
The main cast was pretty busy in recent weeks; finishing up old projects and preparing for another 5 months of filming:

  • Lucas Till enjoyed a well-deserved holiday with friends and celebrated July 4 with family
  • Justin Hires finished his Stand-Up comedy show tour. A photo of him during one of his shows even made it into an article by The Hollywood Reporter.
  • Tristin Mays attended several fundraising events and did some talk show appearances for the RuJohn Foundation in Jamaica
  • Besides working out, Levy Tran has been taking shooting lessons to prepare for Season 4. She just finished her road trip across the States.
  • Like last year, David Dastmalchian auctioned off a visit to the MacGyver set for a good cause. It was sold for 17’000 USD. The set-visit last year was auctioned off for 12’000 USD, so that’s pretty cool.
  • George Eads’ Korean War movie “The Battle of Jangsari” has been picked up for international distribution and is supposed to be released in Korea this month.
  • Amazon Studios has picked up “The Wilds”, the series that Reign Edwards filmed the pilot for in New Zealand last year. There’s no filming dates yet.

Costume Designer Sarah Downer had revealed on June 18 that she had started on costume prepping. After that, it stayed quiet on social media for a while, despite the production office already being open since June 3rd.

Justin Hires at The Comedy Store (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Of course, there’s still been a lot of preparation going on behind the scenes. As Steven Serna stated, the grips are already in full preparation mode. On Tuesday, both Justin and Levy had been on the studio lot for fittings.

On June 25, Peter Lenkov revealed part of the production logo for Season 4. He also uploaded a few throwback photos (e.g. of him and Lucas at the Monte Carlo Television Festival back in 2017). Every now and then, a new/old BtS photo (e.g. of Episode 3×08) or BtS video (e.g. of Episode 3×19) pops up. Meredith Eaton shared a photo of her with Lucas.

Technical Consultant Rhett Allain continued writing science notes about the MacHacks; adding a blog post for Episode 2×12 (Mac + Jack) and for Episode 2×13 (CO2 sensor + Tree Branch).

Ratings prediction for Season 4 (encore)
TV show ratings tend to drop each year. On average, every non-rookie CBS Fall show lost about 17.61% in demo ratings and 12.94% in audience numbers in the 2018/19 TV season. When looking at the renewed action and crime shows only, the loss was even higher (about 18.77% in demo ratings and 15.29% in audience numbers).

The ratings loss for MacGyver was actually a bit lower than the average (with a loss of 15.79% in demo and 11.01% in audience numbers compared to Season 2). If the Reboot would have been allowed to air in the same timeslot this Fall, Season 4 could have ended up with an average demo-rating of 0.59 and a live-audience of 5.43 million viewers. That’s… not really great. But how will the ratings for the other CBS shows look like; especially the Friday shows?

Lucas Till enjoying a vacation in Alaska (via Jason Trost)

In case you’re interested in some CBS Friday predictions:

  • If Hawaii Five-0 has the same ratings drop as it did this season, it will end up with an average demo of 0.62 (-18.9%) and 6.27 million live-viewers (-13.05%) per episode.
  • If Blue Bloods has the same ratings drop as it did this season, it will end up with an average demo of 0.69 (-13.09%) and 7.83 million live-viewers (-7.15%) per episode.

Both shows still have good DVR ratings and do very well internationally, so they will probably get renewed for another season. They could still go on for more seasons if one the lead actors quits.

Tristin Mays doing interviews (via RuJohn Foujndation)

There’s no losses for Magnum PI yet. Because of the timeslot move, it’s a bit difficult to predict how the ratings will do. Let’s say it will drop the same amount as all the other renewed action- and crime-shows did this year. It would end up with an average demo of 0.72 (-18.77%) and 5.08 million live-viewers (-15.29%) per episode. Let’s be generous and say the timeslot actually helps the show and the loss will only be 10%. That way, it would end up with an average demo of 0.80 and 5.40 million live-viewers per episode.

While a demo of 0.8 for Magnum would be acceptable, the audience numbers aren’t good enough for a show in its 2nd season. It’s even lower than what MacGyver could have gotten this season if it stayed a Fall show. It will be interesting to see how much the time slot switch will influence the Friday ratings. It’s very likely that while the move will help to keep the ratings-loss marginal for Magnum PI, it’s going to accelerate the ratings drop for both H50 and BB.

BtS photo of Episode 3×08: Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome (via Justin Hires)

As mentioned before, midseason shows aren’t very famous for their ratings in general. This is how the CBS rookie Spring and Summer shows have been doing this year:

  • The Red Line ended its run of 8 episodes with 3.85 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.36 per episode and was cancelled.
  • After 9 episodes, The Code (Mondays 9pm) is at 4.98 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.55 on average. The show has been pulled off schedule temporarily; replacing it with reruns of Magnum PI. The break didn’t do it any good; dropping half a million live-viewers when it came back this week. There’s 3 more episodes to go, but since the show has already been cancelled, the ratings might drop even lower.

Summer Show Blood & Treasure (Tuesdays 10pm) aired 8 episodes so far. The average at the moment is 4.24 million live-viewers with a demo of 0.48 per episode. Interestingly, it’s been renewed for a 2nd season. That gives us hope for MacGyver since it should be able to beat these ratings and is already a well-known franchise internationally.

All you need to know about Season 4
There’s still no midseason premiere date yet, but here’s an overview of what we know so far:

  • Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) replaced Craig O’Neill as Co-Showrunner
  • Season 4 will have 13 episodes for now
  • filming starts July 8 in Georgia and is expected to wrap in November (unless they add more episodes to film)
  • as expected, Levy Tran has been promoted to Series Regular
  • According to TV Line, there was a new regular role to be cast; specifically the character “of a former Army guy, trained in psy-ops, who has parlayed his particular set of skills into a successful career as the owner of an elite military contractor”. As Deadline revealed on June 28, the role has been appointed to LOST alum Henry Ian Cusick.

Henry Ian Cusick will play Russ, a lead opposite Lucas Till’s MacGyver. Russ is handsome and quick-witted Oxford-educated ex-military who is a master manipulator and salesman — skilled in propaganda and lie detection with an extremely high emotional intelligence. A very wealthy man, he’s used to getting his way and not beyond enjoying the spoils of war: expensive suits, fast cars, private jets, house in Monte Carlo.

Henry Ian Cusick (via IMDb)

There’s no further information if he’s friend or foe. The news flooded social media very fast; even ending up as one of the top posts on SpoilerTV last week. Judging by the info of all the news sites, he sounds like a mixture of the characters of Jack Dalton and Samantha Cage. Some fans are worried that him being another regular might push both Riley and Desi a bit into the background.

The first Casting Calls came out on Tuesday. Central Casting Georgia has been looking for Bar and Coffee Patrons and for a Featured Bartender.

Costume Fitting Break (via Sarah Downer)

Timeslot prediction for Season 4 (encore)
Although they start filming in just 4 days, it could take another half a year until we get official news about the premiere date and the timeslot. Many have speculated about a start in January 2020. But the only potential one-hour-timeslots for MacGyver to start in January are Mondays 9pm (in place of All Rise), Thursdays 10pm (Evil) or Sundays 10pm (Madam Secretary). Additionally, there are also 3 other crime shows needing a one-hour-slot during midseason: Tommy, FBI: Most Wanted and the last season of Criminal Minds. So it’s going to be a tight schedule if they still insist on all the mini-breaks and reruns during the season.

CBS might have already planned on where and when to fit which show into the ongoing schedule, but it all hinges on how well the rookie shows will do. As you can guess, a 10pm slot for the show would be pretty bad. And if both All Rise and Evil get a back-up order for a full season, there’s only Sundays 10pm left in January; meaning the show might have to wait until Spring for a free 8pm or 9pm slot.

MacGyver in Germany
German-speaking fans finally got a premiere date for Season 3 on German channel Sat.1 (July 23rd). As expected, they will air two episodes every Tuesday. Pity that the Season 2 DVD isn’t out before mid-August *sigh*.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:

  • 3×01: 50 Millionen Diamanten (50 Million Diamonds, Improvise)
  • 3×02: Daltons Helden (Dalton’s Heroes, Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship)
  • 3×03: Zurück aufs College (Back to School, Bozer + Booze + Back To School)
  • 3×04: Atemnot (Respiratory Distress, Guts + Fuel + Hope)

Additionally, Germany had another MacGyver-related event last week: Original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson visited Comic Con Germany in Stuttgart; attending two panels, posing for photos and writing countless of autographs.

Other MacGyver Promo
ICYMI: Both the Reboot and Lucas Till have been nominated in the 1st wave of nominees for the Teen Choice Awards. Voting for the 1st wave was open until June 25; voting for the 2nd wave of nominees starts on July 8. The Awards will take place on August 11.

Also, Greenlight Hollywood has just released a second MacGyver collectible: Jack Dalton’s 67 Pontiac GTO convertible. Check out the photos and description here.

MacGyver Collectible (via Greenlight Hollywood)

It’s still months until we get to see new episodes, so here’s what we know so far about other upcoming MacGyver-related promo stuff:

  • The French DVD for Season 2 will be released on July 24
  • The German DVD for Season 2 will be released on August 15
  • The “Official MacGyver Survival Manual: 155 Ways to Save the Day” will be released on September 17

According to an article from June 3, CBS has announced new licensees for its TV properties. MacGyver is one of them, doing collaborations with “Just Funky” and “Skybrand”. I’m assuming it will be similar items that CBS usually has in their shop for other shows (e.g. mugs, mousepads or beanies), so most likely nothing too exciting unless they add standees like for H50. It’s worth noting that almost all crime shows shops for CBS are down at the moment. They’re probably already in the process of updating the shop pages, so new articles might be available soon.

MacGyver Reboot Update #68

Episode 3×04 premieres today and we also already got a glimpse at Episodes 3×05, 3×06 and 3×07! Sadly, still no Sneak Peeks for tonight’s episode.

Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About Episodes 3×02 and 3×03
Shortly before the episodes aired, some of the cast and crew posted “old” photos and videos taken when filming the episodes back in July and August; e.g. Jesse C. Boyd with Team Delta, Jessejames Locorriere with Team Phoenix at College or Tessa Blake (director of Episode 3×03) with Meredith Eaton and with George Eads.

BtS photo of Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (via Jessejames Locorriere)

For Episode 3×03, CBS added more Stills on October 9; making it 14 Stills in total. Interestingly, they were all photos of the Team Phoenix College Kids, so no Jack or Matty at all. Maybe they wanted to make up for the delay on the Sneak Peeks for Episode 3×02, so they added more Stills and uploaded the 3 Sneak Peeks earlier than usual.

To recap: Episode 3×01 had attracted an audience of 5.771 million live-viewers with a 0.7 rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. Compared to the Season 2 Premiere, they lost 0.1 in demo and about 920’000 viewers, which is less than most of the other CBS action drama shows. In the Live +7 days ratings, it gained another 1.8 million viewers, making it 7.60 million viewers in total when including DVR ratings.

Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

The Ratings for Episode 3×02 (Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship) were almost the same with 5.734 million viewers and a demo of 0.7. Thankfully, Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) did a bit better, reaching 6.155 milllion live-viewers and the same demo (0.8) as Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods.

While the ratings aren’t as good as for H50 or BB, the Reboot still holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 6.48 millions / 0.98 demo (Monday) after airing four episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.29 / 0.83 (Wednesday, 3 episodes) and SWAT at 5.18 / 0.73 (Thursday, 4 episodes).

What you need to know about Episode 3×04
The episode airing tonight is titled “Guts + Fuel + Hope”. It’s the first episode written by Rob Pearlstein (who had previously worked on Scorpion) and was directed by Peter Weller. In case you missed the Synopsis:

MacGyver and Riley, with the help of Vasil (C. Thomas Howell), a distraught father, must find a way to drive a tanker filled with liquid oxygen through a region occupied by rebels and deliver it to a children’s hospital before they run out. Also, Riley helps MacGyver decide whether or not to allow his father back into his life.

For this episode, Tate Donovan as Oversight is listed in the recurring cast. They added additional Stills on October 9, but even though they uploaded several Sneak Peeks for both Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods yesterday, there are still no Sneak Peeks for MacGyver as I’m finishing up this blog post.

Episode 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

At least Tristin Mays was nice enough to upload a little BtS video of her doing an action scene; driving the truck and fending off bad guys at the same time.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov has been quiet regarding MacGyver as well (in fact, his last Instagram post related to the MacGyver Reboot is from October 5, so 2 weeks ago while there was no shortage of postings for Magnum and H50).

Maybe there are mixed feelings regarding this episode since there’s still an ongoing investigation of the accident with Stunt Coordinator Justin Sundquist, but since they’ve decided to finish and air the episode, it should also get proper promotion.

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×05 to 3×09
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (October 26)
Halloween Episode, directed by Eagle Egilsson. Guest appearances by Tate Donovan (as Oversight) and Sibongile Mlambo (Nasha). They added Official Stills on Tuesday. You can check them out here.
  • 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (November 2)
Directed by Stephen Herek. Guest appearances by Sibongile Mlambo (Nasha), David Dastmalchian (Murdoc) and Brady Bond (Cassian). See the Press Release here.
  • 3×07: Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly (November 9)
    Guest appearance by Joy Sunday.
  • 3×08: tba (November 16)
Guest appearances by Holland Roden and Emerson Brooks (Charlie Robinson).
  • 3×09: Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak (tbd)
Directed by Michael Martinez. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (Billy Colton).

It looks like the fans get at least 8 weeks of uninterrupted fun. There might be no episode on November 23rd, though (due to Thanksgiving).

Working on Episodes 3×09 and 3×10
On October 4, production had started on Episode 3×09. It’s titled “Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak”, written by Lindsey Allen and directed by Michael Martinez. Lance Gross was back on set as Billy Colton; uploading a few BtS videos as Short Stories on Instagram.

There’s almost no BtS photos being uploaded now; but mainly temporary videos. They filmed an upscale event at a mansion and put Lucas Till in a Hazmat Suit. Though not listed in the credits so far, Lucas’ brother Nick was on set as well. They also filmed several days inside the War Room Set or outside. Last night, they filmed stunt scenes on a prison set and there should be another overnight shoot today. They’ve also decorated some streets to look like it’s already Christmas time.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Meanwhile, Justin Hires keeps on giving us BtS photos from already filmed episodes; e.g. of 3×08 with Holland Roden and of the Team in their Sunday Attire.

Peter Lenkov promised to post more photos of George Eads, but so far he hasn’t delivered. Since George had deleted his Instagram account recently and hasn’t been seen on set very often in the last few weeks, fans still keep asking about him. Justin Hires was nice enough to make sure to include him in his recent Snapchat videos.

Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards wrapped the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand. Just a few days after arriving back in LA, she was on set again to film scenes for Episode 3×09.

Episode 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Amaris Merlin and for Sendhil Ramamurthy. Additionally, they had several Calls for Photo Doubles and for Small European Cars. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for Lab Techs, Scientists, Guards, European Police, Hazmat Men, a Phoenix Driver, for people attending an Upscale Event, Airport Security, or for Prison Inmates and for Prison Guards.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • Tomorrow (8pm), there will be a rerun of the Michael Jackson Halloween Special on CBS with the voices of Lucas Till and George Eads.
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver is still set to be released on BluRay on October 30. CBS even started doing promo for it, although we still have no information if there will be Extras or not.

While Cast and Crew work 15-hours-days and more, they still find some time for other projects. Tristin Mays did a photoshoot last month. She will be on the cover of the Fall Issue for NYSFE Magazine, released on October 27. According to online posts, there should also be an interview where she talks about the MacGyver Reboot. You can pre-order the magazine here.

MacGyver in Germany
On average, every Season 2 episode had about 1.73 milllion live-viewers and a demo-rating of 8.62. This is less than Season 1 (1.79 million live-viewers, demo 10.0), but enough to make the network happy. Also, they still air reruns of Season 1 on Monday night.

MacGyver Reboot Update #67

Episode 3×02 premieres today! While Cast and Crew work on Episode 3×09, the famous social media game “Where’s George?” is going into another round.

Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

About the Season 3 Premiere
CBS took its sweet time to start promoting Season 3. A day before Premiere Day, they finally released 3 Sneak Peek videos. On Friday, ET Online added another, Exclusive Sneak Peek of Mac and Oversight parachuting through crossfire. A few hours later, CBS released an additional Sneak Peek as well, making it 5 Sneak Peeks in total.

Some of the stunt and guest actors started posting “old” photos and videos from the filming process done back in July; e.g. Richie Stephens or Matthew Albright. Sibongile Mlambo uploaded a photo of her character’s different costumes.

BtS photo of Episode 3×01: Improvise (via Carl A Nespoli)

According to aerial stunt coordinator Carl Anthony Nespoli on Facebook, the parachuting scenes have been done for real. Yan Dron and Troy Hartman did the main jumps; also lighting the canopy on fire. I hope we see more of this as a Season 3 Featurette soon.

Sadly, the ratings weren’t as high as I hoped. Episode 3×01 attracted 5.77 million viewers and got a 0.7 rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. It’s the episode with the lowest audience numbers so far, but it got a better demo than the Season 2 Finale. (For comparison: Episode 2×01 premiered with 6.69 / 0.8 and Episode 2×23 ended the Season with 6.10 / 0.6.)

Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

It also holds up pretty well against some of the other CBS action dramas that got a lot more promo in recent weeks and have a lot more ad-value simply due being a non-Friday-show. For comparison: Magnum PI is at 7.08 millions / 1.05 demo (Monday) after airing two episodes so far, SEAL Team at 5.02 / 0.8 (Wednesday, 1 episode) and SWAT at 4.95 / 0.75 (Thursday, 2 episodes).

What you need to know about Episode 3×02
The episode airing tonight is titled “Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship”; written by Brian Durkin and directed by Duane Clark. In case you missed the Synopsis:

When Jack receives an emergency distress signal from one of his old Delta buddies who is falsely accused of terrorism in a foreign country, MacGyver and Jack quickly recruit the rest of Jack’s old Delta team and stage an unsanctioned rescue op.

For this episode, Reign Edwards as Leanna is listed in the recurring cast. To be honest, I don’t know anyone of the guest cast.

BtS photo of Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (via Han Soto)

On September 27, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov had uploaded a short video; stating that one of his favorite artists will provide a song in the Episode. (The scene is MacGyver and Jack talking with Mac apologizing while fetching a few beers in MacGyver’s kitchen; later being joined by Matty.) As Kristin Diable revealed, the song hasn’t been released so far, marking this episodes as its world premiere.

CBS had uploaded some Sneak Peeks onto their YouTube account. Sadly, they put up the Sneak Peeks for last week’s episode 3×01 again. They have released 4 Sneak Peeks in total, but as I’m typing this post, they still haven’t corrected their error 16 hours later. Bit of a pity that of all the CBS shows it seems to be MacGyver that gets either a wonky form of promo or no promo at all.

Episode 3×02: Bozer+ Booze + Back to School (Official Still via SpoilerTV)

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×03 to 3×07
It’s easy to loose track of the upcoming episodes. So let’s do a short recap of all the important information for the next weeks:

  • 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (October 12)
Directed by Tessa Blake; following the storyline of Team Phoenix going undercover on a college campus. Guest appearance by Lance Gross (as Billy Colton).
  • 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (October 19)
Directed by Peter Weller, this episode has Riley and Mac driving a tanker filled with liquid oxygen through a war-torn region to deliver it to a children’s hospital. For the first Official Still released on Monday, you can check the Press Release here.
  • 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (October 26)
Halloween Episode, directed by Eagle Egilsson.
  • 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (November 2)
Directed by Stephen Herek. Guest appearances by David Dastmalchian (Murdoc) and Brady Bond (Cassian).
  • 3×07: tba (November 9)
  • 3×08: tba (November 16)

It looks like the fans get at least 8 weeks of uninterrupted fun. There might be no episode on November 23rd, though (due to Thanksgiving).

Working on Episodes 3×08 and 3×09
On September 24, production started on Episode 3×08, directed by Lily Mariye (Emergency Room). They filmed in “Paris” and in “Afghanistan”, joined by Emerson Brooks (as Mac’s EOD friend Charlie Robinson) and Holland Roden (known for her work in the TV-Show Teen Wolf).

The cast posted a ton of Instagram Live Stories; making up for lost time and promoting the Season 3 Premiere. On Friday, they’ve filmed scenes for a Foundation Dinner with Military Vets; some of them sitting in a wheelchair. The cast got to wear tuxes and dresses.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

On Monday, production continued in Atlanta. As revealed by dozens of Instagram Short Stories, the filming was a “smelly” adventure. The crew had to MacGyver their own nose-plugs  with tissues or ear-plugs to keep the smell away.

On Wednesday, Lucas Till gave a shout-out to the wardrobe crew; announcing it was going to be a “dirty day”. On the photo uploaded by Justin Hires, his clothes looked still clean, though. Holland Roden posted a photo of herself in a pretty black dress, indicating she might be part of that Foundation Dinner scene.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Yesterday, Justin Hires uploaded a photo of Mac, Bozer, Charlie and Riley around Mac’s fireplace. Because Jack is missing in the photo with everyone looking pensive and because George Eads hasn’t been seen on set for Episode 3×08 yet, fans keep asking the cast, the writers and the producers if George has left the show. Indeed, Peter Lenkov promised to make sure we’ll get to see more photos with Jack in it.

With showing us the script title page, Tristin Mays revealed on Wednesday that Episode 3×09 is titled “Specimen 234 + PAPR + Outbreak”, written by Lindsey Allen and directed by Michael Martinez. Sounds dangerous. PAPR could be a Powered, Air-Purifying Respirator, so the perfect tool for a MacGyverism.

Lance Gross was back on set as Billy Colton yesterday and early morning today; uploading a few BtS videos as Short Stories on Instagram.

Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards wrapped the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand and arrived back in LA a few days ago. Theoretically, it’s possible for her character Leanna Martin to be back on the show by Episode 3×09, but we don’t have any further information yet.

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for a bald actor and for some of the main actors. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for a Diner Patron, Background Actors for an European Airport, for Police and for Guards. Overall, not many Casting Calls lately.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • The Season 2 DVD of the Reboot was released in the US on September 18, and there’s even loads of bonus material on it this time!
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver is still set to be released on BluRay on October 30. CBS even started doing promo for it.
  • Original MacGyver fans keep posting about both the MacGyver Funko Pop and the Escape Room Board Game; appreciating to finally have some “Mac Swag” after all these years.

MacGyver in Germany
To recap: Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) managed 1.79 million live-viewers, followed by the Season Finale Episode 2×23 (MacGyver + MacGyver) with 1.68 million live-viewers. Both episodes got a demo-rating of 7.4.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Overall, Season 2 had about 1.73 milllion live-viewers on average per episode and a demo-rating of 8.62. This is less than Season 1 reached (1.79 million live-viewers, demo 10.0), but enough to make the network happy. Also, the demo-ratings were better than Season 2 of Lethal Weapon airing in the same time-slot just before and better than SEAL Team episodes airing on the same day at 10pm.

The Original S1 BluRay is listed now on Amazon for preordering (release date: November 8). Weirdly, they put an FSK16 rating (16 years and older) on it – although the initial release on DVD is FSK12. Guess MacGyver in HD is too much to handle for some people *lol*.

MacGyver Reboot Update #66

Tonight’s the Night – it’s the Season 3 Premiere! After months of waiting, fans finally get to find out about the consequences of MacGyver quitting Phoenix in the Season 2 Finale.

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

What you need to know about the Season 3 Premiere
CBS took its sweet time to start promoting Season 3. Last Friday, we finally got a Season 3 Premiere Teaser Trailer; posted on Instagram just before the rerun of the Season 2 Finale. Considering all the other CBS shows got previews weeks ago and Sneak Peeks days ago, it’s no wonder fans had started complaining about the lack of promo so shortly before the start of the new Season.

Official Season 3 Poster (via SpoilerTV)

Yet, CBS still left it upon the cast, the crew and the fans to promote the upcoming Season and the DVD release of Season 2. There was no promo for the DVD at all. They aired a slightly longer preview after the rerun of Episode 2×23, but it wasn’t posted on the other social media sites until Monday. On the same day, they released the Official Season 3 poster – it’s the one of MacGyver hanging upside down; safety pin ready while Jack angry-stares into the void. It’s sure memorable and fun, but again feels overly photoshopped to me.

In case you missed the Press Release and the Official Stills for tonight’s Episode 3×01 (Improvise), here’s the synopsis:

Three months after quitting the Phoenix Foundation and moving to Nigeria, Mac puts aside his differences with his father and returns when he hears Jack is the target of a murderous dictator he double-crossed.

Screenshot of Episode 3×01: Improvise (Sneak Peek via ET Online)

Yesterday, CBS finally released 3 Sneak Peek videos. One is of MacGyver and Oversight on a plane, the second one of Bozer and Leanna undercover in military uniforms with Riley helping out from home. The third one is of Oversight arriving in Nigeria in a helicopter, telling Mac that Jack is in trouble and needs help.

Today, ET Online added an another, Exclusive Sneak Peek of Mac and Oversight parachuting through crossfire. Since they’re listing real aerial stunt coordinators on IMDb, it’s possible the stunt people did a real jump for the footage. Maybe we’ll get to know more in upcoming interviews or BtS material.

Nearing the Season Premiere, some of the guest and background actors started posting “old” photos from the filming process done back in July; e.g. Richie Stephens with Lucas Till and with Justin Hires.

BtS photo of Episode 3×01: Improvise (via Richie Stephens)

Season 3 Overview: Episodes 3×02 to 3×06
It’s easy to loose track about the production process and what’s been going on since July. So let’s do a short recap about the episodes we can look forward to:

  • 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (airdate October 5)
Directed by Duane Clark; centering around Jack and his old Delta Buddies. For Official Stills, see here.
  • 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (October 12)
Directed by Tessa Blake; following the storyline of Team Phoenix going undercover on a college campus.
  • 3×04: Guts + Fuel + Hope (October 19)
    Directed by Peter Weller.
  • 3×05: Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family (October 26)
Halloween Episode, directed by Eagle Egilsson.
  • 3×06: Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc (November 2)
    Directed by Stephen Herek.

BtS photo of Episode 3×01: Improvise (via Richie Stephens)

Working on Episode 3×07
For Episode 3×07, production filmed in “Ghana”. Locations were a banka street market and a restaurant. They also filmed several days on a set dressed as a junk yard, a location set up as a car accident scene and nearby a lake. After making friends with snakes, filming continued in the War Room on September 21.

The posts by crew and extras revealed that the heavy schedule was starting to take its toll – after almost 60 days into production, many complained about being tired; posting photos of their colleagues taking a nap whenever and wherever possible during breaks. Of course, the heat in Atlanta didn’t help.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Meredith Eaton)

Luckily, they actually got the weekend off for once. Justin Hires continued to post a few BtS photos from set – e.g. of Bozer under a car (or rather, a truck) for once or of him with Lucas Till and Joy Sunday, listening to the director’s explanations.

Working on Episode 3×08
On Monday, production started on Episode 3×08, directed by Lily Mariye (Emergency Room). They filmed in “Paris” and did scenes with costumes including a tac vest; revealing that Mac’s EOD friend Charlie will be in this episode. We don’t know yet for sure if “The Ghost” will be back as well, but it seems reasonable since he never got caught.

On Wednesday, the cast started posting new BtS photos. Meredith Eaton uploaded a photo of her with Lucas Till. Lucas posted one of MacGyver waiting for security in Chechnya and one of him standing next to a Stunt Double and a Stand-In; pointing out that he was the one wearing a vest.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Lucas Till)

Yesterday, they filmed scenes with Lucas in MacGyver’s EOD soldier gear, so it looks like they’re doing another episode with flashbacks to Mac’s and Charlie’s time in the Army – so maybe we finally get to know how they first heard about and started chasing The Ghost?

The cast posted a ton of Instagram Live Stories; making up for lost time and promoting the Season 3 Premiere. Tristin made the cast do a funny catwalk routine (sadly, George Eads was not on set yesterday to join in on the fun). Justin Hires finally got a Stand-In that looks like him. He also provided some photos of older episodes; e.g. of his favorite Episode 3×03.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Lucas Till)

Today, they’re filming a scene for a Foundation Dinner with Military Vets; some of them sitting in a wheelchair. Again, the cast has to wear tuxes and dresses for an episode, which they don’t seem to mind after running around in tac gear and uniforms out in the rain yesterday.

Just a few hours before, Lucas posted another BtS video of him getting dressed in that weird prisoner jumpsuit diver costume.

Cast, Crew and Character News
Reign Edwards started filming the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand, so it’s not clear if and when her character Leanna Martin will be back on the show. For now, Episode 3×03 will be most likely her last appearance. Sibongile Mlambo had been in Atlanta again recently, and since she’s listed on Episode 3×06 on IMDb together with David Dastmalchian and Brady Bond (as Cassian), I’m assuming she might not be back again, either.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Justin Hires joked about Joy Sunday playing Bozer’s sister, but since he also jokes about MacGyver (or everyone) dying in the episode they’re filming at the moment, I’m not sure if this is true or not. What we know is that Emerson Brooks (who plays Charlie Robinson) plus Holland Roden (Teen Wolf) were on set this week.

Central Casting Georgia had posted Casting Calls for Stand-Ins for Emerson Brooks and Holland Roden and a Photo Double for Sarah Sokolovic. They’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for European Background Actors, a female Stand-In with red hair, Female Techs, an Attractive Male for a Photoshoot, a Caucasian Male to portray a Dead Soldier, for someone to portray a Politician in a Photoshoot, for Female Military, for Bartenders and Wait Staff, people attending a Foundation Dinner, for someone with access to a wheelchair to use as a prop, for Police and for Military Vets.

Rerun Ratings
There was a rerun of the Season 2 Finale Episode 2×23 (MacGyver + MacGyver) in the usual timeslot last Friday – the only rerun during hiatus, in fact.

The episode pulled in 3.71 million live-viewers with a demo-rating of 0.4. This is not as much as the reruns of Season 1 garnered last year, but fits in with other reruns on Fridays – especially when considering that this was the only rerun and there was no promo surrounding it.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • The Season 2 DVD of the Reboot was released in the US on September 18, and there’s even bonus material on it this time!
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver is still set to be released on BluRay on October 30.
  • Original MacGyver fans keep posting about both the MacGyver Funko Pop and the Escape Room Board Game

Other countries had been gearing up for the Season 3 premiere as well. Since they didn’t have any material of Season 3 yet, they resorted to old material. AXN Asia used Season 2 footage for their teaser trailer; adding the Official Poster in an an altered, pink color design.

MacGyver in Germany
To recap: Episode 2×20 (Skyscraper – Power) had reached 1.8 milllion live-viewers in total (3 years and older), while Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water) had 1.71 million live-viewers. Both episodes garnered a demo-rating of 8.6 in the targeted age-group (14-49 years old).

Episode 2×22 (UFO + Area 51) managed 1.79 million live-viewers, followed by the Season Finale Episode 2×23 (MacGyver + MacGyver) with 1.68 million live-viewers. Both episodes got a demo-rating of 7.4.

Screenshot of Episode 3×01: Improvise (Sneak Peek 3 via CBS)

Overall, Season 2 had about 1.73 milllion live-viewers on average per episode and a demo-rating of 8.62. This is less than Season 1 reached (1.79 million live-viewers, demo 10.0), but enough to make the network happy. Also, the demo-ratings were better than Season 2 of Lethal Weapon airing in the same time-slot just before and better than SEAL Team episodes airing on the same day at 10pm.

After airing the Season 2 Finale last Monday, Sat.1 started airing reruns of S1 (Monday night, around 1am). I’m confident that they will also air Season 3 next Summer.

MacGyver Reboot Update #65

There’s still a serious and concerning lack of promo… but on the other hand, only 7 days left until the Season 3 Premiere!

BtS Photo of Season 3 (via Peter Lenkov)

(Spoiler Alert: You will get spoilered about main characters and storylines in Season 3 by reading this post and its comments or by clicking on the links provided!)

What you need to know about the Season 3 Premiere
It’s gotten pretty quiet during the last few weeks. There was almost no BtS stuff to find for a while as if the production had gone undercover, and fans started complaining about the lack of promo so shortly before the Season Premiere. Sadly, CBS left it upon the cast, the crew and the fans to promote the upcoming Season 3 and the DVD release of Season 2 on social media.

We do have Press Releases for the first three episodes, though. On August 23, we got the Synopsis plus 6 Official Stills for Episode 3×01 (Improvise) via SpoilerTV.

Season 3 preview by TV Guide (via Peter Lenkov)

On September 11, Executive Producer Peter Lenkov posted a snippet from TV Guide that left us a few hints about the upcoming season. Other sites had Fall TV previews as well; e.g. E!Online or Entertainment Weekly.

News about Episodes 3×02 to 3×05
Episode 3×02 (Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship) was directed by Duane Clark. CBS released a first Official Still along with the Press Release on September 13. As expected, it centers around Jack and his old Delta Buddies. On September 17, SpoilerTV added 7 more Stills. The photos were all taken when Lucas Till and George Eads filmed at an airport, so the other Team Phoenix members are absent.

Episode 3×02: Bravo Lead + Loyalty + Friendship (Official Still via CBS)

Justin Hires’ favorite Episode 3×03 (Bozer + Booze + Back to School) was directed by Tessa Blake and follows the storyline of Team Phoenix going undercover on a college campus. Justin upladed more photos from the episode; showing us the “weekend whip“. Yesterday, CBS revealed the Synopsis along with a first Official Still.

Episode 3×04 was directed by Peter Weller, but there’s still no title or an entry on IMDb. I was concerned that the episode gets dropped due to the accident that happened during production, but it looks like they were back at filming a few extra scenes or inserts on September 16.

Episode 3×03: Bozer + Booze + Back to School (via CBS Press Express)

The Halloween Episode 3×05 (Dia de Muertos + Sicarios + Family) is set in Mexico and was directed by Eagle Egilsson. Cast and Crew filmed scenes for a “Day of the Dead” Festival for several days.

Working on Episode 3×06
After Labor Day weekend, Cast and Crew continued working on Episode 3×06. They filmed at an airport and in the streets of Atlanta. The Casting Calls imply that one of the locations is a bank in Bogota, Colombia.

On September 11, Meredith Eaton uploaded a new photo of Matty with MacGyver and Murdoc – in the interrogation room at Phoenix. Looks like Murdoc got caught again – or he let himself get caught, who knows. Meredith also revealed that Matty wears bracelets handcrafted by Lucas’ mother Dana Till.

BtS photo of Season 3 (via Justin Hires)

Justin uploaded a photo of Bozer with a gun on his right and arm candy (George Eads aka Jack Dalton) on his left.

According to SpoilerTV, the episode is titled “Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc” and as Allen Theosky Rowe revealed, it is directed by Stephen Herek. Rowe posted a photo with his villainy friends in a car and labelled an earlier photo with “The Cleaner”. Sounds like an interesting enemy for Murdoc and/or the Phoenix Team.

Working on Episode 3×07
On September 12, production turned the streets of Atlanta into Ghana; filming in front of a bank again and recreating a street market. On the next day, they set up shop at a restaurant.

Steven Serna posted photos of a truck in front of green screens. The Stand-Ins suffered in “Hotlanta”; encountering bugs and butterflies while waiting under the canopy.

Justin Hires posted several photos of himself with cars – Bozer sitting on a car, Bozer sitting on the same car in a different position or Bozer leaning on a car. He also uploaded many Instagram Live Stories featuring the Stand-Ins; joking about his own Stand-In (Kevin Marshall Pinkney) looking nothing like him; contrary to Lucas’ Stand-In (Matthew Albright).

Meredith Eaton posted a photo of her with Lucas and George in the War Room. Peter Lenkov finally had found some time to post another team photo during a short break from filming in a junk yard.

They also filmed what looked like a car accident and nearby a lake. Cast and Crew were enamored with the location; posting lots and lots of photos of the lake or the blue sky with the fluffy white clouds. Meanwhile, Lucas Till made new friends of the animal kind. While this is reminiscent of the Original Show, I doubt the snake is part of the storyline – they regularly have a snake wrangler on set when filming in “grassy” and “foresty” locations. Interestingly, Justin Hires didn’t seem so fond of the snakes in the bucket.

This morning, the crew started filming in the War Room location; for once safe from the hot weather they filmed in all week. The posts by crew and extras reveal that the heavy schedule is starting to take its toll – after almost 60 days into production, many complain about being tired and post photos of their colleagues taking a nap whenever and wherever possible during breaks.

Cast, Crew and Character News
In case you missed it: The Press Release for Episode 3×01 (Improvise) lists 4 official recurring characters for Season 3: Kate Bond (as Jill), Reign Edwards (Leanna), Tate Donovan (Oversight) and David Dastmalchian (Murdoc). Looking at the Press Releases for single episodes, both Episodes 3×02 and 3×03 only list Reign Edwards as recurring, though.

Reign started filming the pilot for “The Wilds” in New Zealand, so it’s not clear if and when she will be back on the show.

Justin Hires joked about Joy Sunday playing Bozer’s sister, but since he also jokes about MacGyver (or everyone) dying in the episode they’re filming at the moment, I’m not sure if this is true or not.

Central Casting Georgia had Casting Calls for a Stand-In for Sarah Sokolovic, a Stand-In for Ric Reitz and a Photo Double for David Dastmalchian. As for every episode, they’ve also been looking for Extras; e.g. for Ghana Patrons (with or without Japanese brand cars), for Ghana Men with tactical experience, for Upscale Business people, Fancy Background Actors, European Background Actors and for Techs and Agents.

Other MacGyver-related News
In case you missed it:

  • The Season 2 DVD of the Reboot was released in the US on September 18, and there’s even bonus material on it this time! Sadly, CBS didn’t do any promo for it.
  • There will be a rerun of the Season 2 Finale today (Episode 2×23: MacGyver + MacGyver)
  • Season 1 of Original MacGyver will be released on BluRay on October 30. (There still no info if there’s any Extras or Special Features.)
  • Original MacGyver fans post a lot on social media about both the MacGyver Funko Pop and the Escape Room Board Game
  • Executive Producer and Writer David Slack revealed that one of the CBS Executives had wanted MacGyver to carry a gun. Apparently, they had to fight to prevent that because they knew it would betray the core of the character.

As mentioned before, there was a severe accident on set on August 20; ending with Stunt Coordinator Justin Sundquist being injured and hospitalized. Latest news was that he’s doing better, but we haven’t heard anything further about Sundquist’s condition or the pending investigation.

Season 3 International Promo (via FOX España)

Other countries are gearing up for the Season 3 premiere as well. Since they don’t have any material of Season 3 yet, they resorted to old material. Fox España used “new” international poster photoshoot material of Season 1; with MacGyver and Jack both tied up plus MacGyver hanging upside down. AXN Asia used Season 2 footage for their teaser trailer; adding the same poster in a pink color scheme instead.

MacGyver in Germany
The ratings in Germany are still pretty stable. They had been dropping slightly, but then started to rise again. I’m already curious how well the Season Finale will do.

To recap: Episode 2×17 (Bear Trap + Mob Boss) garnered 1.62 million live-viewers in total (3 years and older) and a rating of 7.6 in the targeted age-group (14-49 years old).

Episode 2×18 (Riley + Airplane) had 1.86 million live viewers with a demo of 8.4, followed by Episode 2×19 (Benjamin Franklin + Grey Duffle) with 1.92 million live viewers (marking the second-highest audience for Season 2 so far) and a demo of 9.3.

A week later, Episode 2×20 (Skyscraper – Power) reached 1.8 milllion live-viewers, while Episode 2×21 (Wind + Water) had 1.71 million live-viewers. Both episodes garnered a demo-rating of 8.6.

The upcoming German Episode Titles:
2×22: Area 51 (UFO + Area 51)
2×23: Das Wiedersehen (literally translated: The Reunion, MacGyver + MacGyver)

After airing the Season 2 Finale, Sat.1 will start airing reruns of S1 (Monday night, around 1am). Weirdly, they’ll skip the first two episodes, but I guess at least some reruns are better than nothing, right?

On August 11, German Channel RTL Nitro started airing Original MacGyver again; two episodes each on Saturday and Sunday mornings with reruns of the same episodes in the afternoons. Sadly, I don’t have any access to the ratings. Since the Original Show is rated FSK12 (meaning 12 years and older) here, they cut some scenes that were deemed too violent. (FSK12 movies/shows in Germany are only allowed to air uncut after 8pm while FSK16 is only allowed uncut after 10pm.)
