About Episode 5×07 (MAC417)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×07 (Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage). CBS released 17 Official Stills and 4 Sneak Peeks beforehand.
We got new BtS photos and videos before and while the episode aired; e.g. a group photo and several videos of Lucas getting to know Victor the Bull Snake (by guest star Aly Michalka aka Frankie) plus many BtS photos and videos while filming in the “snake lab” (via snake handler Blake Welch who brought Mimosa to set).
Writer Josh Brown tweeted snake facts, a BtS photo of the screen test with Victor and some insights to the episode; e.g. the backstory they wrote up for Frankie (and what she’s been up to in the last 4 years). Stunt Double Alex Hill revealed that it hadn’t just been archive footage, but that they did milk venom from a few timber rattlesnakes for the necessary shot.
On February 8, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyverisms.
To recap: Episode 5×06 had 4.994 million live-viewers and a demo of 0.57 in the group of 18-49 year olds. In the Live +3 Days Ratings, it added 0.982 million viewers (+19.66%) and 0.186 in demo (+32.90%); reaching a total of 5.976 million viewers and 0.75 in demo.
Episode 5×07 did a bit better; reaching an audience of 5.163 million live-viewers. While the demo was lower with 0.52, it was slightly better than the demo for both Magnum PI and Blue Bloods. Compared to the other scripted CBS shows (22 in total at the moment), it places Rank 14 in average live-viewers per episode and Rank 12 in average demo.
Several of the writers plus Showrunner Monica Macer joined the live-tweeting. With about 664 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide, but we had more tweets than for #MagnumPI (about 209 estimated tweets per hour) or for #BlueBloods (about 215). Overall, the episode was well-received on social media.
What you need to know about Episode 5×08 (MAC418)
Tonight is the premiere of Episode 5×08 (SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini). It was written by Cindy Appel and directed by Yangzom Brauen. This is the episode filmed with production number MAC418 (SOS + Hazmat + Frequency + Malihini) back in February last yar.
Mac and team rush to help when Matty’s former mentor, Ian Cain (Robert Patrick), and his embassy staff come down with a deadly, mysterious illness. Also, Taylor and Bozer work with Jerry Ortega (“Hawaii Five-0’s” Jorge Garcia) to infiltrate a Codex cell.
On February 2, we got 16 Official Stills via the CBS Press Site. 10 of them are tagged, but available on Getty Images. You can find all untagged Stills on Seat42F.
On February 9, they released an exclusive Sneak Peek on Entertainment Weekly; followed by two Sneak Peeks via the CBS Press Site. The next day, we got another exclusive Sneak Peek via TV Insider; followed by another Sneak Peek via the official YouTube account.
What you need to know about Episode 5×09 (MAC420)
Next week is the premiere of Episode 5×09 (Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt). It was partially filmed with production number MAC420 last year since they were in the middle of filming when they were shut down due to the pandemic. They finished filming the remaining scenes last month. We don’t know if they took the opportunity to add script revisions.
We got a Press Release on February 8. Here’s the synopsis:
When Mac and the team are unable to prevent Department of Defense intel from falling into Codex’s hands, Mac must scale a vertical cliff using only gear he can cobble together himself to prevent the info’s transmission.
Sadly, we didn’t get any Official Stills with the Press Release yet.
Season 5 Overview
Here’s an overview of the upcoming Season 5 episodes. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West, by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).
- 5×08 (MAC418): SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (February 12)
Written by Cindy Appel, directed by Yangzom Brauen
- 5×09 (MAC420/504): Rails + Pitons + Pulley + Pipe + Salt (February 19)
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore
- 5×10 (MAC503): Diamond + Quake + Carbon + Comms + Tower (March 5)
Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano
There is a rerun of Episode 4×11 (Psy-Op + Cell + Merchant + Birds) scheduled for February 26.
Remember that episode titles and their order are not definite until an official Press Release. I sorted the upcoming, newly filmed episodes by production number. Because the filming schedule seems to be all over the place (more about that further down), it’s very likely that there are several mistakes and errors:
- 5×11 (MAC505): tba
Written by Josh Brown, directed by David Straiton
- 5×12 (MAC506): tba
Presumably written by Teresa Huang, presumed guest appearance by Camilla Arfwedson
- 5×13 (MAC507): presumably titled Barn Find + Oil Slick + La Punzonatura + Lab Rats + Tachometer
- 5×14 (MAC508): tba
- 5×15 (MAC509): tba
We don’t know much about these episodes or if they’re still on time with the schedule. As far as we know, filming was planned to be wrapped by March, but that could still change.
Working on Episode MAC505 and beyond
To Recap: It’s been harder to follow what’s going on behind the scenes. For now, I’m assuming they have been filming MAC505 to 507 in parallel. Filming locations in the last few weeks included the Phoenix Jet, Sweetwater Creek State Park, a church and the Hindu Temple of Atlanta. As guest stars, we had Alexandra Grey, Camilla Arfwedson (Sofia) and a few lab rats on set. We also got to see Lucas Till as the plague doctor and Levy Tran dressed as a nun.
Adding a new Friday routine (to make up for Tie Friday, maybe?), Lucas continued dressing up last week (this time as the Mandalorian). It seems that as soon as Sarah Downer has left (for a well-deserved rest during the last weeks of her pregnancy), they already lost partial control of the costume departement.
They had another night shoot at the Hindu Temple on February 5; the BtS material hinting at filming an Indian Wedding scene with dancing. Filming on Monday (February 8) started once again very early; with crew posting the first photos around 3am. They set up a scene involving a helicopter and green screen. The next day, Showrunner Monica Macer posted a photo of her on set with Meredith Eaton (presumably back in LA).
Posts for Wednesday hinted at cast and crew having a “dark” day on set; with some of the crew members visiting the High Art Museum in Atlanta. It’s not clear yet if having the day off was a planned or unplanned event. For all I know, there’s no BtS material for either Wednesday nor Thursday.
Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
Last Friday, we got a new Casting Call via Central Casting Georgia for Non-American Cars. Additionally, Beth Stein Agency congratulated their client Melanie Minichino for booking a guest spot in an upcoming episode.
This week, CBS announced that they will hold a virtual Upfronts event on May 19. We should know before that date if the show will be renewed.
Lucas Till’s movie Son of the South is available on demand and in selected theaters. On the official movie website, you can find a list of theatres and VOD and Digital Platforms. Last week, Lucas did several short interviews together with co-star Lex Scott Davis (e.g. for AM FM Magazine, EurWeb or BackstageOL).
Reviews are varied. The weighted IMDb-Rating plummeted from 7.9 down to a 4.3 just a day after the release, but is back up to 5.0; holding an arithmetic mean of 6.7 and a median of 8 (meaning that 50% of the voters rated the movie 8 and higher).
