About Episode 5×05 (MAC416)
Last week was the premiere of Episode 5×05 (Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO). It was written by Jim Adler and directed by Ericson Core; filmed with production number MAC416 (Jack + Kinematics + MgKNO3 + GTO) last year. They released 17 Official Stills and 2 Sneak Peeks beforehand.
Sadly, we didn’t get much more BtS material during and afterwards; not even by the official CBS accounts. On Monday, Tech Consultant Rhett Allain released his blog post about the MacGyverisms; e.g. the giant electromagnet or the flash bang.
To recap: Episode 5×04 had 5.173 million live-viewers and a 0.59 demo rating in the important demo group of 18-49 year olds. It’s the episode with the highest ratings so far. In the Live +7 Days Ratings, it added 0.22 in demo (+37.92%) and 1.210 million viewers (+23.37%); reaching a total of 6.39 million viewers and 0.81 in demo.
Episode 5×05 made 4.989 million live-viewers with a 0.55 in demo. Although having a smaller audience, it did better in demo than Magnum PI for once. Compared to the other CBS scripted shows (21 in total), it places Rank 10 in average demo and Rank 12 in average live-viewers per episode.
Several of the writers and producers joined the live-tweeting, but none of the main cast this time. With about 793 estimated tweets per hour, it wasn’t enough for the hashtag #MacGyver to trend US-wide.
Overall, the episode was very well-received on social media; with many fans praising writer Jim Adler and asking if guest star Nick E. Tarabay (Tibor, a Croatian version of Jack) will come back for another episode.
What you need to know about Episode 5×06 (MAC502)
Episode 5×06 (Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance) airing tonight is the second episode that has been filmed for Season 5. It was written by Stephanie Hicks and Andrew Karlsruher. The director is Andrew Ahn, who has worked with showrunner Monica Macer before on another TV show.
We got the Press Release and the First Official Still on January 4. Here’s the synopsis:
During COVID-19’s first stay-at-home order, as Mac, Bozer and Riley quarantine together, they try to stop a crime in progress at their neighbor’s house. Also, Russ’ romantic fling takes on a longer and more complicated turn when they quarantine together.
CBS already revealed in their Notes for Nerds Newsletter that MacGyver will write a song dedicated to his favorite immunologist. Last week, we got 10 Official Stills via the CBS Press Site. You can find 4 tagged ones on Getty Images and 5 untagged Stills on What2Vue.
For once, they were early with the Sneak Peeks; releasing two of them on Tuesday morning and an additional, exclusive Sneak Peek provided by TV Line in the evening. Understandably, fans were a bit confused due to the episode dealing with two different timelines.
Yesterday, we got yet another Sneak Peek that shows the chaos that is quarantining with Mac, Riley and Bozer in Mac’s house. They later uploaded two more videos to the official YouTube account. I think these may have been a mistake, because they spoil the ending (go watch at your own risk!) and were probably intended to being released as clips after the episode aired and not as Sneak Peeks.
What you need to know about Episode 5×07 (MAC417)
Episode 5×07 (Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage) will air in two weeks (on February 5). It was written by Joshua Brown and Andrew Karlsruher, who have been on the writing team for several years now. Filmed with production number MAC417 almost a year ago, it was directed by David Straiton.
We got the Press Release with a First Official Still on January 19; alongside the confirmation that we will see another guest appearance by Aly Michalka as Frankie. Here’s the synopsis:
The secret experimental cancer treatment Mac’s developing with a friend is discovered when culprits ransack their lab, kidnap Mac’s partner and plan to use the research to create a powerful new nerve agent.
Yesterday, CBS relased 17 Stills on their press site. Since there is a rerun scheduled for next week, we might have to wait a bit longer for a promo trailer for this episode.
Season 5 Overview
Here’s an overview of the upcoming Season 5 episodes. The infos were either provided by CBS, by the website for the Writers Guild of America West, by social media accounts or IMDb (cast and crew info), by SpoilerTV (press releases) and The Futon Critic (airdates).
- 5×06 (MAC502): Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance (January 22)
Written by Stephanie Hicks and Andrew Karlsruher, directed by Andrew Ahn
- 5×07 (MAC417): Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage (February 5)

- 5×08 (MAC418): SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini (February 12)

Guest appearances by Jorge Garcia and Robert Patrick. TV Line released a scoop article before the Press Release came out yesterday.
There is a rerun of Episode 4×04 (Windmill + Acetone + Celluloid + Firing Pin) scheduled for January 29.
Remember that episode titles and the episode order are not definite until an official Press Release by CBS. For now, I sorted the other episodes by production number:
- (MAC420): Rails + Pitons + Pipe + Salt
Written by Rob Pearlstein, directed by Christine Moore
- (MAC503): tba
Presumed guest appearances by David Dastmalchian and Joe Pantoliano
- (MAC504): tba
Presumably written by Teresa Huang
- (MAC505): tba
We don’t know much about these episodes yet, nor if they’re still on time with the filming schedule. Depending on the episode order, they still need to film about 5 more episodes.
Working on Episode MAC504 and beyond
It looks like last week, they worked on finishing up the episode with production number MAC420 – the episode that was in the middle of filming when production was shut down on March 13 last year. We got an exceptional amount of BtS material; e.g. by Lucas Till, by Tristin Mays and also by different crew members.
On January 14, Esther Elise Johnson posted that they had wrapped the episode. There was no material the next day, so I’m not sure if they had Friday off or not. Filming continued on Monday (January 18), but there was only a handful of BtS photos and stories and nothing at all for Tuesday.
Set Photographer Danielle Korman visited the stages on Wednesay. The same night, guest star Alexandra Grey arrived in Atlanta; filming her first scenes yesterday.
Cast, Crew and other MacGyver-related News
Extra Kevin Kedgley posted a few BtS photos of him as a cop on set of Episode 5×04. He had played a police officer in the scene that ended on the cutting room floor.
Yesterday, Levy Tran and François Chau (who guest starred on both OG MacGyver and Reboot Episode 1×19) attended a panel for The Song Collective, a series of free virtual discussions to celebrate Vietnamese creatives.
Levy revealed that the casting agency had actually been looking for a hispanic actor when she auditioned for the role. After she booked the part, they re-wrote the character and implemented Levy’s Vietnamese roots into Desi.
ICYMI: Lucas Till’s upcoming movie Son of the South will be available on demand and in selected theaters February 5.
